I like playing Bodom rhythms, as well as Lamb of God, some of theirs are tricky.

The verse riff for Silent Night, Bodom Night is harder than most people think. It's triplets, most people I've seen play it just pick as fast as they can.

I like I too.. definitely not as much as I used to though. I can see where people might not like Meshuggah. What is wrong with it exactly?

Well.

Jackson JS-30 with FR and floating bridge.

I didn't realize when I got it last year, that FR was impossible.

Lately I've been having problems with it staying in tune. With FR locked and all... It'd go outta tune in 10 minutes. So I tried without the FR, same result it just took much less time to re-tune.

I also was having major problems with when I'd lock down the nut (I did it the same way I'd always done it, so I know it wasn't me). It would throw the tuning into a new world, too much to fix with the fine tuners.

Anyway. I got pissed. Took off the strings, put it in the case and tonight I decided I'd put strings on it and see what happens.

I can't string it, it's literally to big a hassle. Whether it takes ages putting the string into the bridge or I can't tie it at the top.
It's impossible. lol.

the laughing emoticon was directed at the contradictory terms, as in they are good but boring. I was trying picture a band i liked, that was boring, and i was having trouble is all.

Kurrpt

guitar solos really sell a band for me too. That HAS to be weird as sh!t. Not being able to come up with a interesting rhythm section, but as soon as its "solo time", like the light bulb goes off.

Im picturing some dead looking person sniffing too much glue/gasoline/paint playing some redundant rhythm section, someone kicking him in the pants as if to remind him "YOU'RE ON!" , him snappin out of a comatose state to play some ridiculous solo, only to return to the zombified state to finish out the track.

Now im intrigued

Squirrel

I suppose theyre interesting, being technical death, they go all over the place, but whereas most tech DM keeps my attention, Muhammeds monotone vocals and rather bland riffs tend to bore me. His lead playing is out of this world though.

Necrophagist musically are one of the most amazing bands that I've ever come across. It's just those damn awful vocals that make them a band that I just can't listen to.

...and Dream Theater is a band that I have a love-hate relationship. I really want to like them just because I'm a big prog metal fan, but their music just seems uninspired and trite. Sure they're great at all of their instruments but their songwriting abilities just plain suck. I really like the songs "Metropolis" and "This Dying Soul" though. Those are a few occasions where they really got it right.

for great technical metal I listen to Death. :)

I don't like new COB at all, Alexander composed a lot of their old material, which was the better stuff in my opinion. Now Alexi tries to be some "Badass Rockstar", which is lame. Alexander was a huge part, now they suck. Later Inearthed stuff was very good, too

Shadows

Alexander didn't compose anything. The band's material has always been written nearly 100% by Alexi alone. It's just a coincidence that Alexander left as the band started to take a new route.

exactly :thumb:

no, not always. i like for example sentenced and other bands who doesn't growl. i doesn't have anything about clean singing, but the problem in power metal is that most of them sing very very high! rhapsody f.e. is power metal but the vocals are great i like them. the vocals of sentenced (though its goth-metal not power) are one of my favourites!! when the singer in power metal bands would sing "normally" i would listen to them, but most of them sing far too high.

no, i definitely wouldnt call it anything special. Now granted, my voice totally sucks for something like that, but you have to figure, growls are monotone in nature. Its not like they warm up by growling scales, or what have you, nor do they raise octaves in the same manner.

I have to practice for at least a half hour every day to keep the tone in my growl. It's DEFINITELY not a monotone...have you heard Mikael Akerfeldt do a wordless growl? He can go from octave to octave to octave to octave without even drawing a breath. I really do see where you're coming from in saying that it is a talentless art, but I think that opinion is naive and ill-informed. Just TRY to do sing along to an Opeth song and tell me growling takes no talent.

The rhythm riffs are extremely power metal, as well as the percussion. I realize that there are plenty non-power metal bands with keyboards *cough* Emperor, Dark Tranquillity, Coprofago *cough*

Well the drums do sound strange for ''In Your Face''. during the verse, they reminded me of the St.Anger drums.

Personally, I think the album isnt good because of the guitar sound, the vocals (older ones were much better). Also, I dont like where they're going with the sloppiness of the bass. Example: in If You Want Peace Prepare for War and Bastards of Bodom.

It's definately hard, I mean the tab to me looks playable during that first ascending run. It's just bits where there's position shifts all on one string but doesn't really make sense in any pattern is what confuses me. I guess it's just down to how you'd rather play it if you're learning it. Just sit there with your guitar and the tab and go through it note by note, finding all the possible positions for each note and just keep the one you like best, I'm sure that'll give you the best results.

I second this but it seems unlikely that anyone will...

Maybe I'll have to fork out $10 and get it myself.

Metalcore? Are you ****ing stupid?

Do you know what "metalcore" even is?

Metalcore is, Converge, As I Lay Dying and Atreyu for some examples.

It's a really good album.

CoB has been and always will be power metal with harsh vocals.

Please huff raid and die.

I thought Atreyu was screamo? Meh, I don't listen to them anyway. Whatever...

I know that you are an absolutely ginormously massive Bodomite, Charming, but this thread isn't meant to be a CoB circle jerk. All opinions are welcome, savvy and n00bish, well-informed and misinformed, pro-CoB or anti-CoB, so long as they are presented in a calm and mature manner.

He doesn't have to huff raid and die just because he doesn't like Bodom, or because he's under the impression that AYDY is metalcore. That's not saying you can't prove him wrong, just don't break out the nubhammer quite yet, and let the guy speak without smashing him into the ground right after he finishes a sentence.

The new album is hardly Power Metal though.

I strongly agree (not a fan of AYDY).

What kind of crack does a person have to be on to think Atreyu is metalcore?

so i should try to re-write the part with all the position shifts on one string, but play the same notes?

i tried it yesterday and i haven't found a better way to play the last two bars

Re-write what ever parts you feel are hard to play, of course everyone is different so the way Laiho plays will differ to Latvala etc and they will both differ to you and me, I tryed the first 2 bars yesterday quickly and didn't really come up with anything.

the first two bars aren't hard, the end of the 3rd and the 4th bars are difficult because of the finger stretching, and i can't imagine how to play it different because its on the last string... i tried to come up with something, but i failed; i only changed the A# from the 8th e-string to the 13th B-string in the end of the 3rd bar. (well, i have to try it today once more -> the only possible thing will be to try it with string skipping)

wow, that stretch is hard for you

id hate to see what happens when you'd try some nevermore solos. My hands are small as hell, and i do it on my 27" baritone 7 string.

its a stretch between 13-20, with insane string skipping too. If you want some hints on getting your stretches better, id be more than happy to help

äh... well, the stretching won't be difficult when playing it slow... but i can't imagine to play it at 200bpm, the speed it should be.

Kurrpt
04-05-2006, 12:47 PM
in all honestly man....

once you have a stretch down, theres really no difference between speeds what so ever. Is a matter of making a stretch that seems BIG, comfortable. Im making it seem easy, but when you think about it, thats all you are doing. Getting you hands aclimated to something that seems foreign at first

my baritone has been a god send for me in that department. Going back to PRS is ridiculous. That 2 inches makes a huge difference

instead of setting your hand up like 1234 ( like you are doing chromatics) set it up in a postion like 1 34 6

its really weird at first, but what you want to focus on is comfort, or lack of tension. You dont want to strain for that stretch. Obviously, the more you perform the stretch, the easier it will be

About the solos, I'll try and work them out myself, that's why I asked that you upload them, I couldn't get hold of a download and my media player won't rip the song in anything less than an hour.

But I'll let you know if i come up with anything different.
