tuning to D and C is so stupid. guitars sound so much worse when they're tuned down that low. i dont care how "heavy" you think it sounds, it's retarted.
Master of Puppets, one of the best metal albums of all time was played compltely in standard... and look at St. Anger... in Drop C.
You can really hear the difference in sound quality if you play the low E string tuned to E, and then to D or C.

I disagree. My band downtunes because it sounds good to us......it creates darker chords and sounds really good for metal if used properly.
However, when all a band does is downtune and play really fast, simple riffs, that's when it's overkill...........
It's all in how something is used (or abused).

It depends on what guitar you use.
Some guitars necks can't have that much "nonstress" and it sounds like ****.
My BC Rich takes it like a champ! My Jackson can't do it.

I <3 my Jackson.
I've never liked any BC Rich guitars, I've always felt I could get a far better guitar for a lot less. It seems that an "ehh" Jackson played leagues above a nice BC Rich.
Just my observations and opinion though.

Pardon, good sir?
Wintersun HARDLY sounds like Children of Bodom...I hope you took the time to listen to their album the entire way through - Jari's vocals are much, much different (and more dynamic). The entire Wintersun is more keyboard-dominated and the leads are nowhere near the shredding Alexi Laiho style, but are rather extremely power metal. The drumming is obviosuly far superior as well. In final addition, Jari's songwriting is much, MUCH better than Alexi's - no song sounds the same on their Self-Titled and there is serious poetry in his lyrics.

Hmm. Perhaps Melo death. The drumming is nothing like Death Metal.
Alexi could write his lyrics about baboons and it would be just as good. No one listens to CoB for the lyrics. It's all about the guitar/keyboard counterplay.

Except hip-hop? :p
I must disagree with your point, however, and I'm not even a drummer.
My band and I are a prime example of the fact that there is no music without the drums - while we were practicing Warheart we were constantly being shuffled around and thrown of time seemingly without end. We decided that we had to recruit a drummer IMMEDIATELY. Drummers are extremely important to a band's sound - without them it's nigh impossible to keep time. They are extremely essential and can add so much.

I didn't mean that drums aren't importent, I meant that they don't contribute to the aspects people really remember about a band. Drums carry no melody, and therefore are a very minor factor in determining what genre a band is.

My drummer side is going to have to somewhat disagree.... without blast beats and sickass double bass, metal would not sound like metal.... there might not be a huge differnce between drums in different kinds of metal, but there is between metal and jazz or even metal and rock...

What about bands like Opeth for example? No blast beats, double bass is used very sparingly, yet still blatantly metal, thanks to the heavy riffs and growled vocals. Some of their heaviest songs are built with jazz-like drum patterns.

Ok, point well taken, drums are not allways an important factor in determining what genre a song/band is, but, there are many cases where they are... Alot of bands use the drums to drive their sound... Arsis, from what I have heard, are very much driven by their drums... Also alot of Amon Amarths sound can be contributed to the drums... I'm not saying that they are what make the band... but they can add alot....

Oh definitely, bands like Arsis and Cryptopsy wouldn't be half as good without the level of extreme drumming, and that's very common in metal. I
was just pointing out that there can be exceptions.
Mr. Squiggles
03-29-2006, 10:05 PM
Yeah, I agree... There are pleanty of exceptions, you don't have to be an all out double bass, super fast, insane drummer to play metal.. I was just saying that they do factor into the sound... but mainly... I just like to give credit to the drums... since I stared playing them, I've realized how much of the music is because of them...

You're saying Kai Haito's drumming isn't very Death Metal influenced? I think he has very big similarities to Flo of Cryptopsy...listen to Winter Madness (Wintersun) and then Crown of Horns (Cryptopsy) and I think you might see some similarities :thumb:
A bit late but I meant Jaska. Not Kai.

lol. I just play w/e until I get it right. For ages I just stayed with easy stuff and in time got very bored. I was playing Static X, Lacuna Coil, Trivium and In Flames' The Quiet Place....It just got really boring. It was too easy and never challenged me. oh yeah. I used to play Hold Back The Day by Devildriver.
(I'd always played Raining Blood and Bloodline) (Not counting those since I still enjoy them and of course play them).
I started working with some CoB riffs and stuff. Just kicked my arse into gear and started learning harder riffs/songs. Then I learned Sixpounder, minus the solos. I'm going to sit down and nail the first solo once I have time.
Currently I'm working on nailing Lashed To The Slave Stick. I think it'll be a couple months before I have that down perfect. I can play all but two riffs of it. I havn't gotten to working on the last two. They will be easy though. I'm kinda sloppy on the chorus and a tad on the string skipping.
Meh.
Moral of the story: If it's easy, don't play it. Push yourself!

Hmm. I've never learned Chokehold. I've played through it and it seemed fairly easy in most parts.
I've played a tad over 2 years, but I do play 3-5 hours everyday. That helps.
I don't work on random techniques, I mostly work on w/e I have to for the song I'm currently learning. Then I practice it to death and nail it. As right now, I'm practicing string skipping non stop, since Lashed To The Slave Stick has so much of it.
I finally forced myself to nail down Pinch Harmonics, because of their being used in Lashed To The Slave Stick.

man.. im ****ing done with this guitar.
I want a guitar without floyd rose.
When it behaves it's great. KEY ****ING WORD.
I tune it, Lock down the floyd rose... wahh laaa. It's a whole nother note. Take the top string for example,
I tune to a perfect D. When I lock down the tremelo. It's a flat as **** E.
All the strings are doing it.
I've had that problem since I got it though. I got good at tuning flat and when locked down it would be perfect. that of course doesn't work.
It's not the guitarist nor the tuner nor my ears.
The strings aren't ancient either.

Only time I've ever used it was on some CoB stuff, messed around with some Slayer solos(boring). That's it really.
The guitar has a great feel and excellent action. It sounds great too.
The funny thing is, I was almost dead set on a string through Schecter. Then I found the Jackson which was a lot nicer. It sounded and played so much better.

Yeah something like that. I wouldn't trade it in, keeping it for a paper weight would net more than that.
The problems I was refering to about Paypal were,
Pathetic customer service. If you do get ripped off, your screwed basically. Unless it's something majorly illegal were you could get the cops on your side. They don't have a clue about computers/cyber crime though and just make a report, file it and let it sit.
Second, Someone can get into your email account (childs play) and then get onto your ebay and Paypal accounts with ease. Thus your personal information at great risk. "Security Questions" are like underhanding A-Rod a pitch.

Wow, thanks very much for turning me on to this book, everyone. I never even knew it existed.. I'm definitely getting it and it's death metal counterpart.

Excellent, excellent book. Really interesting quotations in it.

My strategy to counter this:
Step 1) Get caught, either purposefully or by accident.
Step 2) Bring an mp3 player to Church.
Step 3) Blast Nordic Black Metal and show your mom how cool it is.
Step 4) There is no Step 4. She'll probably never let you within a half mile of a Church again.

Actually, she'd just take away his mp3 player and metal music. That's what would happen.
My family is non religous. Only time I've ever been in a church was for a funeral. That's it.
I'm fairly anti christ though. (not satanic).
My personal opinion on religous people is the following,
They are mentally ill. It's just a friend they made it to feel better. If someone did that without calling it "god", they'd land themselves a "5150".
They are deceiving themselves and helping deceiving others by being part of it all.
Religion brings out the worst in people,
example, All this "In the name of Muhammud" stuff over in the middle east, the radicals who blow up abortion clinics. We all know that bombing and wrecking havoc upon people is the way to set the moral high ground.
It's also just a form of mind control and another way for insecure men to control women stupid enough to following this crap.
I could go on for ages. I'll stop here. :thumb:

its the same case in my situation. i only have to go to church 2x a year.
i will call myself not satanic but anti-christian. last christmas i wished to get the "satanic bible" by anton lavey ... hm ... i think you can imagine what my parents said. we had a looooong discussion about what satanism is, am i satanist and what metal in general is... yeah, they even thought that metal is evil :smash: i had to explain them the whole way-of-life and philosophy of metal, though my dad listened to led zeppelin and black sabbath when he was young.
i listen to metal for years now and after such a long time, my parents realized that i listen to this kind of music and thats bad... or that thats the reason i am interested in satanism; but only cause i am interested in satanism doesn't mean that i AM satanistic. i only want to know more about it, than the general ppl outside the world.
they should accept me who i am! the best thing is that since they look at my angrily when i dress black (they don't want me to buy black clothes anymore), that i listen to agressive music and so on  they wanna change me: no metal, no black clothes, no anti-christians philosophy cause thats bad... muahaha... nietzsche, lavey... lol
i needed about 1-2months after i enlightened them what metal is... blabla. now they accept me the way i am, but still don't like it.... well they tolerate it, but don't accept it... yeah, thats the better way to describe it
the only good thing is that, i don't see my parents that often... i live in vienna, my parents don't. i visit them once a month... the next time i will see them on easter.

I don't think my parents object to me listening to metal too much. If they did I guess it'd also just make listening to aggressive stuff better. So yeah...:smash:

I'll gladly explain.
In my theory, "God" is nothing more than an imaginery friend. A person or theme to throw as a blanket over a persons problems/issues/troubles.
Since we're going to consider that an imaginary friend. Lets talk about that.
If a "rational" person had belived in this higher power yet didn't call it "God" or hail towards a mainstream religion. This person would be on a 5150 faster than you can say, BAM!.
They would say the person has auditory and visual halucinations. Plus an imagary friend.
There is no difference between both situations.
Just dressing it up with this lovely word, "God".
It's just a way to control people by means of fear and another way for insecure males to control women.

I'd like to add.
Religion is used in many ways to justify evil.
Look at the middle east. All the terrorism, bombings, killing and such are done "in the name of...".
Look at the abortion clinic bombings, which are done "in the name of morals...".
I'm personally anti abortion, however....
Terror and violence is no way to set a "Moral Highground".
For anyone who doesn't know what a "5150" is,
It's an "involuntary hold" for 72 hours at a mental hospital. If your deemed sane, they release within that 72 hours. If your insane, a danger to yourself or others or just really damn loony. They keep you.

Correct me if I'm wrong,
I've always understood Asian culture to be very much geared towards respecting and learning from ones, family, past, country and ancestors. I've always understood religion and spirituality to be a tool used in guiding such.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
For the record.
I reject all religions including Satanism.
Another issue I have is,
Each religon claims to be the "true & real one".
If you ask a christian, they would say their church is wrong and "jewish faith followers will go to hell since they don't believe in the right god". Muslems would say, they have the right answers and christians are wrong.
If they all claim to the be the right one, how do I know who's lying and for real?
They can't "all be the right one".

I believe being a good person is something you became over time. You really grow and learn you whole life.
Values are beliefs you gain through experiances and how they impacted you as a human being.
I don't see it as something you can "ask for and be granted'.
I see it as continued self growth over time and something that's shaped.

Alright. I've never met you, your friends nor your church so I can't speak to that exactly.
It's been told to me many a time by people I've known. From different religions that if you were "fill in the blank" you're the same as a "heathen" since you didn't "take jesus as your savoir and ask for your sins to be forgiven" in their context.

It's p2p in a sense, though a tad different. To answer what your parents would ask, yes you're pirating copyrighted music, games, movies etc etc.
AYDY is CoB's weakest effort, though it's good.
Bed Of Razors is on Hatebreeder. Which is their second best album.
Needled 24/7 is on Hate Crew Deathroll.
HCDR has some of their heaviest and best works on it.
Hatebreeder is much lighter and more lead guitar oriented. Not that HCDR isn't by any means. :p
CoB's best album would be Follow The Reaper. It has an incredle amount of great guitar leads/solos and keyboard work. It's the album that combines guitar and keys the best.

On a completely different note...my parents aren't letting me go out and do stuff with friends and stay at some chick's house whom I admittedly don't know but all my friends do. So they're not letting me go because they don't know her parents and presume I'm going to get knifed/raped by them.

That I am. I'm IMO the number 1 CoB fanboy on these boards. Mitch (MrDuCran) would be second. Ben (ShadowsFallen) third. Though we'd all fight to the death for that title.
Get Follow The Reaper since it's a blend of Hatebreeder and HCDR. It was inbetween those releases.

one of the main reasons i don't like religions at all is the fact that in the name of god a lot of war were fought -> in the middle ages: christians; now: moslems; even jews aren't better. every religion has/had it war!
the only religion i have deep respect of is the (well its more a philosophy than religion) philosophy of buddhism. i read a lot about it and i believe in reincarnation.
btw. back to the topic of hell... do you really think hell is a bad place? imagine who you will meet there? Alexi Laiho, Robert Plant, Marilyn Manson, etc. :chug:
