Punk to me would be "**** the goverment, anarchy is the way to go". Besides, metal is about the music. Alexi says himself that he's a terrible lyricist, and I certainly don't listen to them because I like his lyrics. As long as the music stays metal, which it is, they'll be a metal band.

Sleepy

They seem extremely punk to me, the entire goal is to say I'm rebelling and you can't control me, that is one of the most punk concepts there is.

First metal band - Black Sabbath (to my knowledge). Debut hit North America in 1970, a few years earlier back in jolly ole' England. If Warpigs isn't a song about rebellion (against the government, too), then I'll be damned. Looks like punk was influenced by metal, not the other way around.

Rebellion and a general distaste for mainstream society is one of the core values in metal (and punk). However, metal introduced it first, and with much more musical prowess, to boot.

Not all punk is political you know.

It's not all about the lyrics either it's about the attitude, and Alexi has the same attitude with his music. He's always all like well this is what we make and were going to do it, it used to be much more about focusing on composition and melody, it was much more in touch with the classical roots.

The Arsis lyrics were very metal and many people will tell you those Bodom lyrics are certainly not even close.
You seem to have this idea that Metal lyrics have to talk about fantasy, or at least talk about the theme in a fantasy style.

I don't think all the genres of metal have a common lyrical style. It differs alot.

I think we've had this discussion before, Sabbath was the first band to introduce metal but they werent the first 100% metal band, they were as much rock as they were metal. I think Maiden was the first band to be truley metal.

Iron Maiden - Run To The Hills

That's a song that gives a big, happy middle finger to the American government for exploiting and inditing Native American Indians. More rebellion against the government there.

wow. you must not really know what heavy means.

for me, bad production ads to the heaviness. as does the intensity of the music, how strongly they believe in it and how passionate the artists are.
not just drop tunings and heavy riffs.

for example, i find black metal the heaviest because theyre so crazy about what they do.

but obviously low growling vocals etc like cannibal corpse contributes to heaviness as well... i guess it all depends how you look at it.

Just because Bodom doesn't tune down to Drop A or Drop B as Slipknot does to make up for lack or talent/creativity doesn't make Slipknot heavier.

There are more factors than just how heavy riffs sound.

You have to consider,

The feel of the music
Mood
Vocals
Bass
Drumming
Lyrical/musicial/overall song theme
and many more factors...

IMO, Neither Slipknot nor Bodom are near the heaviest out there.

Nile, Meshuggah, Arsis(quite brutal), Cannibal Corpse, Necrophagist, Opeth(some very heavy songs), Behemoth, Hypocrisy(the virus album is downright brutal&intense), Green Day(insane blast beats).... Those are all much heavier.

ohshi, i sense an argument between manda and dylan

CoB just doesn't have the heavy sort of feel for me, but I will still try to check out some of thier older stuff.

It is true that crappy production adds to heaviness, but only sometimes. Six Feet Under is a crappily produced version of Cannibal Corpse, but I think CC is better.

I really don't think that My liking of Gothenburg obligates me to like CoB, but in any way, I never said CoB were bad, I simply don't listen to them on a routine basis......just not my style for some reason.

Lacuna Coil's new album is awful. The first three songs are neat. Then it just goes south. Very south.

The guitars and bass dominate the songs. Neither is a strong point for LC. The vocals fall back in the shadows. The drumming is different and improved. All in all... The first three songs are neat, rest is crap.

The guitars sound downtuned from the already heavy BEADGBE. It really sounds like Korn, but not as good.(ouch).

I'm still waiting for a real reason as to why it's bad.

The cut shots to Alexi screaming and playing guitar were great, with the distorted effect and shifting angles. The lit banner behind the band made the stage look very epic while they were playing. The theme stuff (cops/chicks) only took up half of the video, but I'm neutral on that. It wasn't really relevant to anything but it wasn't bad. It's almost identical to Sixpounder when the woman was beaten and kidnapped for no reason - a cop tracks a guy down and takes him away, but no one knows why.

The cop/chick theme is very immature. The distorted scenes were cool, I did like those. They don't save it though. As said, it doesn't show Alexi playing the cool parts. It has nothing to do with the song.

Reasons enough?

TOTSE looks pretty good. Why don't you like the computer forums at LWS? Some of the best i've found.

OC Club is the best.

The questions & threads were rather basic from looking at a couple pages worth.

TOTSE is pretty sweet. SG & Half Baked are just idiots if you didn't notice. Bad Ideas is rather similar in terms of the posters IQ's.

There are some interesting text files in the archives but plenty of junk.

I ordered Something Wild the other night, should be here in abou a week, that'll mean I'll then own all CoB albums, excep Tokyo Warhearts, which I will get once I have some more money.

CoB is filled with fantastic musicians, sadly the music itself rarely does anything for me. When I feel like moshing for no particular reason I might put some Bodom on, but no, it's not something I can't live without.

What CoB albums do you have?

If all you have is Are You Dead Yet or Hatecrew Deathroll...you might be gravely mistaken in your opinion. I recommend Hatebreeder and Something Wild over ANY of their newest stuff.

It's not. It's an Indian symbol representing good luck.

I'm pretty sure the intro was lifted from another song or piece.

The direction of the legs is the determining factor.

It will always be that symbol though. People have a negative connotation of it but that doesn't change the meaning.

You shouldn't let a made up idea cloud the real meaning behind something.

I don't like nazis either, but I'm not going to fear something because I think it may be remotely related to them.

We've been through this debate before when Josh had this avatar. I'm going to look on almighty wikipedia and find the answer!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swastica

I still find it rather questionable to have that be your avatar. Considering what it's KNOWN as. Even though it has a non-nazi meaning. 99% of people associate it with nazism.

The worst CoB song is easily Knuckleduster. Luckily the sweet solos redeem it.

I like In the Shadows though. Even the band hates it.

I'm Jewish, and even I have the sense to actually look before I rush to get offended......

My band went through this whole thing of having a Pentacle as our band symbol (with the baphomet goat head in the middle), and people automatically assumed we were satanic (not knowing the true Pagan and Jewish meanings behind the symbol)......I had to do a lot of explaining to people about that one......

MRDuCran

Your whole family are skinheads?

Seriously. If you can't understand why someone would say something against displaying swastikas like this, then you have a mental problem.

I read the wikipedia artical. I understand it has constructive meaning and was used in that sense long before hitler came along. I get that.

It's just when you display that, anyones first thought is SKINHEAD! They assume your a white surprimisist. It's logical to think that though. Since the only time I ever hear/see that used, is with "white power" groups.

I listen to one or two Bodom albums, put them down and listen to a couple others for a while. Repeat and Recycle through all their albums.

Right now I'm addicted to HCDR and HateBreeder. Just got done with Follow The Reaper and Something Wild.
