Guys, this thread is still bound by the rules that govern R&M. If you can't talk about the band in a sensible manner, then just take it to an AIM chat room or something.

Yeah... I have been practicing Angels Don't Kill a bit lately. Although, some of the tabs seem way off at certain parts. Especially what's on "MySongBook.com"... anyone know where to get somewhat correct tabs for it? I made the mistake of not watching Alexi play it live when I saw him.

Me too... I can usually deal with wrong parts that sound right... but ever since I have seen "Rock 'n Roll Licks" video for some odd reason I need correct tabs... I am weird. Even if I do figure stuff out myself I usually need to see Alexi do it too for me to know I am right... I have even had a dream where I begged him to teach me all of the other songs off of HCDR hahaha.

No no no, I have tried. Actually, some of what I know of it are from myself, and just that small short lick he does in Reap 'n Roll licks. I just wish he made a new video showing the entire thing because the keyboards are so powerful in the song that it can be hard to tell what's right and what's wrong...

Oh haha. I am stuck on... well... everything after the main intro keyboard parts... where everything starts to slow down a bit, and the two guitars are playing the same line somewhat slowly... uh... I think it's only about 5 notes. Sorry this isn't too helpful, my sound is dead on my computer so I can't check...

I know what bit you mean. The tabs I've seen of that part are correct but I think in a different tuning. None of them are in CGCFAD.
How do you record?
OK. Because my pc is slow, it can't run Cool Edit Pro properly without lagging so instead I play over a Guitar Pro file or a backing track and use All Sound Recorder to record everything it hears. After one "track" has been done, I play it back in Windows Media Player and then record over the top again and record that, which means if I fukk up near the end, I have to start again. Pain in the arse I tell you.

Most people will tell you Follow the Reaper, which is classed as their classic.
Then Hatebreeder which has alot of neo-classical elements, such as their first album Something Wild. Hate Crew Deathroll is more of a new sound and sounds a bit darker and more angry overall. I doubt anyone would reccoment Are You Dead Yet? for a first album since it's going more mainstream but still rules hard imo.

It's a great song.
I think I know basically nothing for playing a couple years.
Only whole song I still know is Raining Blood from Slayer.
I've know so many whole songs and parts of songs(that i was going to learn all of it)...then just forgot they existed.
I knew significant parts of every time i die, bodom beach terror and needled 24 7 and in your face. I was "going to learn the whole thing". That lasted quick.
Same with Nemisis and Pull Harder....
Beast and the harlot as well.
I think it's pretty pathetic for playing a couple years...only knowing one whole song...
I learn half a song and then want to learn another. Forget about the one I learned half of and onto the next. Repeat cycle...alot.. I wind up forgotting everything and knowing nothing. :thumb:

EDIT:
I could name the whole songs I knew but that would be even more sad.

The Light That Blinds isn't a very fun song to learn or play. A lot of the riffs and leads are performed sloppily on the recording, and it's hard to duplicate that sloppiness.
On the topic of learning songs, if you get into a band and start covering songs it totally motivates you. Not only do you want to learn songs to play with your band, but you want to learn them perfectly to make your band sound better.

Yeah.
Btw, saying "there is a version where you play arpeggios, i play the other version; without arpeggios" doesn't actually make sense.
An arpeggio is just playing notes of a chord individually which is what this intro is, mainly Amin with other notes from the Amin scale, so I think you must mean string skipping instead of sweeping.

I like the new one anyway. The riffs sound great, if only it wasn't for the horendous vocalist. Nothing beats WoC though.
I dunno, i've listened to WoC for years so its wearing thin.
The Negation is my favorite and has been for a bit now.
The new album sucks except for about 2 riffs and 2 leads.

Yeah.
Btw, saying "there is a version where you play arpeggios, i play the other version; without arpeggios" doesn't actually make sense.
An arpeggio is just playing notes of a chord individually which is what this intro is, mainly Amin with other notes from the Amin scale, so I think you must mean string skipping instead of sweeping.
ähm... yes... i'm not the best in theory. my mistake... you're right, i meant string skipping instead of sweeping

i tell ya what... Alexi Laiho may be good, prolly one of the best shred metal players in this modern era.... but i want to say that COB's synth player (Janne Warman) is awesome. i dont think ive seen a keyboard player go so fast man im tellin ya.... that band has so much talent its not even funny... when you got alexi shreddin` and the keyboard player playing the same thing i would have to say that... wow thas crazy stuff... i would think keys are a lot harder to play at those kinds of speeds

I usually play in standard tuning. I have a guitar with thick strings that I pretty much tune to whatever I feel like playing, but it feels so wrong to do that on my main guitar, for some reason. I mainly dislike the looser feel and poor intonation that comes with tuning down while using light strings.

02-09-2006, 07:37 PM
I've never really experienced any of the regular problems that most people get with tuning down or getting a guitar with a floating bridge.
Plus, I can't play LoG riffs as easy on .11's, I use very small pick movement to clear the string.

My .10's are pretty much elastic bands if I tune down to F.
And yeah, but to Meshuggah that was only down a half step.. they used 7 strings at that time. I can't comfortably tune down to their current F, so I stick with the Bb.

Agreed. Don't waste your time with '' Are You Dead Yet? ''. Start with Follow the Reaper, Hatebreeder. Every song on those albums is very very good. and memorable too. No matter what their new fans say, these two albums defined the good old COB sound.
Hatecrew Deathroll was good, but in a way began their journey towards loosing originality.

oh and Something Wild (1st one) is just about as good as Hatebreeder or Follow the Reaper, but its got less songs on it... so i'd get it after.
Originallity? Really?
You want to find me an album or band that sounds like HCDR and AYDY?
I'm waiting.
AYDY grows on you alot over time. Living Dead Beat, AYDY, Bastards Of Bodom and We're not gonna fall are some of Bodom's greats. I count TL&S as off the EP, BTW.
Hate Crew Deathroll has some of their best and worst.
Sixpounder, Chokehold, Bodom Beach Terror, Angels Don't Kill, Triple Corpse Hammerblow all top notch.
Lil Bloodred Ridin Hood and Your Better Off Dead are good but not great.
Needled 24-7 despite the great soloing in it, both keys and guitar. It's over played, over whored, and get's old after a while.
HCDR title track is somewhat boring, except it's great live.

I didn't care to learn the solo's but playing through em...The first was easier by a mile. The second was really hard.
What kind of guitar and amp did you play that on?
I'm working on Dream Theater's "This Dying Soul", hopefully I can have the solo at the beginning down within a week or two...If I get enough time in on it.
Then start on the rest of the song.

Yer that first is way easier.
Guitar is an Rg770 (pink may I add!)
And I'm playing through a KORG Toneworks PX4, plugged directly into the back of my pc.
I'm not actually familiar with that song but I'll give it a listen. It's good to hear that you've started guitar back up again. :thumb:

Yeah I decided to just drop The Black Dahlia Murder song "A Vulgar Picture", not because of difficulty though. Funny though, after quiting the song, I can play the part I couldn't get down perfect, perfectly now. Go Figure.
I learned Sixpounder but skipped the pinch harmonics and solos. I can't do pinch harmonics for ****.
I'll learn the solo backing some time so I know the whole thing.
Your Sixpounder > Mine

I still need to try the passage to the reaper tab, that Ben sent out.

Yeah it's pretty wierd.
I'll try passage to the reaper tonight since the tab is really short. If I have an easy time, it won't be much to learn.
What's everyones favorite stupid moment of themself playing?
I have to go with learning Raining Blood from Slayer...When I was first learning guitar and finally being able to play a lil.
I tried to only downpick the fast riff after the beginning walkdown.
That didn't work well. It resulted in sore hand/wrist/arm. Alot of them.
:p
I then learned to down/up-up/down pick.
haha...I can double pick for ages and don't have dead arms hahahaha.

WOW! That Sixpounder cover is... well... lets simply say a lot better than me... I can play all the parts you did, but in this video I tried to sum some of it up really quick because of the lack of recording time I have. I can sort of play the second solo, but I need to warm up for like 2 hours haha. Anyway, I will put myself to shame by putting this up. This is a corney video of me kinda like an 80's wanna be Alexi...

Standing when practising is pretty important to me, especially if you play live, you should be able to play solos the same sitting and standing. Saying that, I don't do it near enough but still, I have my guitar pretty high anyway.

I just took a shot at recording with audacity and nearly threw my wireless mouse out the window....
I could play raining blood just fine before i tried to record...then the momemt i start... i manage to **** it up at every possible point. mostly starting badly and getting worse.
Main reason I kept ****ing up with how distracted I was.
I think really worse though was that I couldn't hear what I was playing.
Not on the amp or audacity.
We all know electric guitars are quiet as hell with no amp. So I'd think I have good timing and then play it back and I'd be like WTF was that.

Eh, thanks people. Yeah, audio in a digital camera sucks a lot. I am trying to improve on it a bit. It sounds so much better when I am sitting down and focused. I am working on Angels Don't Kill, but that song is so hard for some reason... I can play Sixpounder just fine, but the one song I want to learn most is ADK... I think I just need better backing track for it because Guitar Pro 5 isn't sounding any better... the keyboards sound pretty dumb.

I always play standing up.
Of course a few minutes ago when I tried to record I was sitting and ****ed up a ton.
I actually play much better standing up, prolly because I always play
standing.
Any tips for recording with audacity?
My problem was I couldn't hear what I was playing. Not on the computer nor the amp.
Then I play it back when I stop and I have wrong timing...almost as if it's a different song wrong...bad notes... and w/e because I can't hear what I'm playing. Therefor no way to gauge what I'm doing.
I play fine with the volume on....I of course also played perfect before I tried recording and after I stopped. Go Figure.
I looked for some way to turn the volume on when playing so I could hear what I'm doing. I didn't see a way though.

While the topic of "help" is on... uh... does anyone know of any free recording software that's decent? All I am looking for is something to download which will let me record things WHILE it's mixing with another file... like for example... I open up a backing track, and as the backing track plays, it lets me record over it. If anyone knows of anything like that and could tell me I would greatly appreciate it.

Garageband.
Mac users only though. :p
You can do that with Audacity as well though. Just import what you want, and click record. You'll start recording with whatever's imported playing in the background.
Garageband has horrid amp emulators though. I got mad pissed at it.
Now, we had to send our preamp box back too, so I don't get to test out our shiny new M-Audio Solaris condenser mic.

I like standing up better, but not for long periods of time. I have a Jackson V so it's always a challenge to play when sitting down, but I find I can usually play the solo's better standing down but I'm more comfortable overall standing up.

Whats easier to do to play solos standing up is to have ur foot leaning on the chair and its makes ur hand more relaxed. A lot of guiarist such as Petrucci use this technique.

By rushed I meant tempo. It seems that way to me at least.
I couldn't really hear what I was playing when recording it, which didn't help.
