I would suggest Hate Crew Deathroll.
Hate Crew Deathroll is awesome, but I don't think it shows the best that Bodom can be. For me, that album would be either Follow the Reaper or Hatebreeder; those are just unbelieveably masterful. Something Wild would be a good choice too.

For a first impression get Trashed, Lost, And Strung-out. That way if you dont like em you didnt spend a whole lot of money :p

I know it's not their best, but it's the most accessable. Vocals aren't as harsh, keyboards aren't used as much, etc.

Just get FTR. If you don't like FTR, don't get Something Wild or Hatebreeder Either. If you still want to try 'em out, get Trashed, Lost, and Strung Out. If you like that you'll like Hate Crew Deathroll.
Yeah, get FTR because that seems to be the album that everyone talks about. After that I would suggest Something Wild, then Hatebreeder, then Hatecrew Deathroll. I thoroughly enjoy all of their albums, so you won't go wrong with any one you get.

Hatebreeder is my favorite, and each album really offers something different. Follow the Reaper is less agressive, but less powermetal based than Hatebreeder. HCDR is really influenced by punk, and Something Wild is a bit more atmospheric.

Hatebreeder > all
It has a cool classical feel to it
I prefer Something Wild just because it has some of Cob's most badass songs on them. These would be Deadnight Warrior, Red Light In My Eyes 1 and 2 , and Lake Bodom. All of those are great songs.

RLNME 2's intro is badass. I love how Alexi Laiho used one of Mozart's riffs.
Yeah, that part is what makes the song truly awesome.

Children of Bodom I think is a really underrated song, I think it may even be the best example of their work. The song really has that "Bodom" sound. Lil' Bloodred Riding Hood and You're Better Off Dead are slightly underrated. I think the other ones you listed aren't. Kissing the Shadows is probably their most highly rated song, but I think it's fair because I think it is their best, but unlike Children of Bodom it doesn't sound much like their other stuff, so I wouldn't tell someone to listen to that to see what they really sound like.

I did make it, yeah. There is a program that I have (that is actually probably illegal...I never thought about it) call All Sound Recorder XP. I stuck some random Bodom cds in my computer, hit record, and recorded the little bits that I wanted to use for the sounds. You can do the same if you have the program. You can change the wallpapers, icons, whatever. That's why I put all those wallpapers on there, so that you could customize it.

Haha, I figured it would be cool for us to have our own Hatecrew based forum. We all could set it up however we wanted basically.
I think that would be a great idea, that way the HateCrew isn't spamming up this thread or anything with random stuff. Either a new forum or we can just make a thread for the HateCrew somewhere here. The Pit?

Yeah I know the vocals aren't harsh enough to be Black but if you had to pin a genre on them I'd say Black would fit best.

Does anyone ever get tired of trying to put labels on bands? I don't know, but I find that it can get a little annoying. I've been told that Children of Bodom are black metal, death metal and melodic metal. Personally, I don't care. You like what you like. Labeling things just makes music more complicated sometimes. Without labels though, a Bodom fan could say oh if you like Bodom then you'd love Cradle of Filth, when in fact they aren't the same thing at all and I hate Cradle of Filth. With labels though, bands like Bodom and Norther are labeled as the same thing, and are in fact very similar.

Thoughts on this....
IheartSP
07-04-2005, 10:33 PM
Fact: HCDR was a style change
Fiction: HCDR is a sellout nu-metal album
It was nowhere close to nu-metal, it had a lot of metalcore influence though. Alexi said he wanted to focus more on rythym, which had taken a backseat on the last 3 albums. He certainly did a good job having more rythym, and the vocals and lyrics have a much bigger punk influence. Plus the music got a little heavier and a lot less melodic. Nonetheless, it is still CoB and it is a great album, but it pales in comparison to the 2 previous ones.

A few reasons...it was my third time seeing them for supporting Hatecrew Deathroll, and we got up front and had a giant Finnish flag! Alexi dedicated "sixpounder" to us and after the show i threw it up to Alexi and he high fived us. My friends and i didnt care about fear factory and lamb of god so we left and hung out by COB's tour bus, Alexi waved and was drinking and Roope came out and talked to us for awhil. He said "thanks for the flag guys" and pointed toward the bus and it was hanging in the bus! Which was preety metal, we had stapled on a cloth that said "Missouri Hatecrew" with our names on it and we talked to Roope about Finland, concerts he saw in the 80's, etc...he was extremley nice and happy to chat so we were thankful and got a photo with him.

For the Kissing the Shadows solo, is it just Alexi soloing or is Roope soling as well, because at certain points it sounds like one guitar stops soloing and begins playing the riff, while the other does the opposite. The two sections of the solo have different tones, too.
Kissing The Shadows was when they still had Alexander as rhythm guitarist...
And no, i think Alexi did all the leads.

Kissing the Shadows is just a duel between Alexi and the keyboard player.
At a couple of parts theres harmonising, but thats just over dub.

What if Alexi collaborated with Tarja from Nightwish though? THAT would be a group to put money down for.
I would pay big money for that. On the scythes of bodom board, someone said that there was a rumor going around about a collaboration; Children of Bodom with Amy Lee? Everyone was so pissed off about it.

Uh-oh, looks like big money is going to bastardize another great great band...
I hope that's not true. I mean, Amy has a decent voice, but the music is just so different...it would clash horribly.

Yep. I love Amy Lee's voice; I think she's really talented. But her and Children of Bodom just do NOT mix. At ALL.

Drums: Nile's drummer
Bass: ?
Keyboards: Janne and Nightwish's keyboardist

Why ?
Sinergy use the same style of vocals as Amy, yet that works. I despise that band, but it works.
So why is CoB with that whale acceptable, but iwth Amy, not ?

I think Kim Goss different than Amy Lee though. Amy Lee is more...mainstream...I guess. She's awesome, but judging from the kind of music she plays, I can't see her doing something with Children of Bodom. Kim Goss...on the other hand....used to play keyboards for Dimmu Borgir.
I don't know, maybe I just can't picture it. Who knows how it would work?

Yea, Amy is more of the "traditional" gothic rock sense, ie Lacuna Coil.
I STILL have no Sinergy mp3s...anybody care to upload some, or direct me to a site where i can download them from.

Bed of Razors: *ahem* Ok. Best Bodom song ever. The melody is amazing and will have you humming it in no time. The guitars are perfect and clearly show the Bodom trademark style. Janne's keyboard intro and everything else he does just emphasizes an already amazing track. And I don't know about you, but personally I love the lyrics. I think that its the best lyrics that Alexi has written yet.
Speaking of, how is the cover coming Danny? You should enter it in the metal comp or something

I'll post them here.
BED OF RAZORS:
I see the candle light burning in your eyes
Flaring up my eyes in flames
On this pitch black summer night
of passion and pain
chorus:
The razor caressed my flesh and my arms turned read
I feel a vast desire
Years of pain are flowing down my arms
sweet, red, warm stream you drink, to make me released
Give me your arm, let me make you feel the ease
in the Bed of Razors we bleed together
I feel the fire burning in my heart
I see it sparkling in your eyes
The blaze you're feeling more and more
chorus:
The razor caressed your flesh and your arms turned red
I feel your vast desire
Tearing pain is flowing down your arms
sweet, red, warm stream I drink, to make you released
Holding your arms, cherish this composure
in the Bed of Razors we sleep together forever...
........Ok, so maybe I am morbid.

I don't know. Mainly I think some Bodom lyrics can be a little lame, but I really liked these. They have some other good ones too. I love the first verse to You're Better Off Dead;
"Hey, whats the matter with you?
what are you trying to do?
I'm wrecking my brain; I'll never get it!
Did I ever hurt you in any way?
If I did then hear my apology: **** you!"
and the chorus is good too:
"...you're better off dead then ****ing with me!"

I think so too. Alexi never puts the lyrics to all of their songs in the cd booklets because he doesn't like them. He doesn't think of himself as much of a lyricist.
