Another question... I see a lot of nuts and non-knowledgable people label these guys as black metal. WTF, R U SERIOUS? Like immortal, Emperor, Early Mayhem, and Gorgoroth? I don't think so.
My personal diagnosis is Power Metal with Harsh vocals. They use entirely power metal song structures and extras, but jjust don't use clean vocals. I can live with people calling em Melodic Death Metal as well.
I know what you mean. I know people who think they are black/death metal. The black metal elements are there, but barely. They're definately a power metal band, with death metal style vocals.

I think if you get a non LTD one, it sounds decent. All the LTD ones sound like utter crap, though a kid in my jazz band had a LTD one that sounded decent. Yet that one had EMGs in it.

What the hell does musical theory have to do with blowing a shoulder/wrist/elbow out?
That has to do with your picking technique NOT what scales/cords and such you know.
Can you not read right or are trying too look stupid on purpose?
When you take lessons learning theory and techinque go hand in hand.
Metal rythms are some of the most complex rythms in music. with out knowing some theory you won;t know create your own music. You have to know what you are doing first before you can seperate your self from the pack. Sure you can memorize and regurgitate, but that means nothing.
With as fast metal goes, if you do it for long hours at a time using the wrong techinique you around bound to injure yourself.
BTW. My picking technique is just fine.
So you know this with out any knowledge of proper technique.

True, in fact Dave didn't even know what a Pentatonic pattern truely was, until recently recovering from his arm injury, his instructor laughed and told him he has been using them in his own songs and didn't even realize it. Hanger 18, and Holy Wars... the Punishments Due are two great songs for rythm/lead. At least in my opinion. Although, Dave's newest album didn't prove much to me, the old ones certainly did.

A lot of that is innate because you grow up listening to the samethings over and over. When some one strums chords with no knowledeg of theory The usually play the typical I IV V I chord progression, just because its what they have heard for their whole life.

Deny what? I'm telling you how it is. You play what you have heard your whole life. The Pentatonic scale is the most played scale in modern rock history. Of course it will come out in his playing with out hime even knowing what it is.
In no way have I taken a dig at his skill.

But you said you have to know theory to be original, I think he's pretty original in his riffing, i.e Holy Wars, Tornado of Souls. He uses alot of major harmonies too in minor keys so it sounds pdd but cool. I don't think it'd be natural for a theory knower to do that because they'll be thinking, this isn't diatonic, I'll make it. At least, that's how my brain works.

How do you make a connection between tonality and steps?
Major harmonies exist within minor keys and vice versa.

Well what I tabbed would be implying AMaj, AbMaj and GMaj. If he was in Emin, the AMaj and AbMaj aren't diatonic, so if it was me, I wouldn't do anything like that naturally because I think very diatonically because I know theory, which is why I think Dave is original and creative because he does do things like this.

Theory helps but you can be original and write great music without theory.
I've jammed out for great sounding riffs without debating theory for hours on what to play before hand.

Thats not how things work bud. No one debates theory before they play, When you know theory you can tweak what you naturally want to play. There are exceptions but they are few and far between.
Why cant you actually back what you say. BTW I was trying to help you out.
Playing guitar is like everything you do that is physical: singing, exercising, Lift heavy objects. You can get away with doing it the wrong way for awhile but you'll eventually you'll injure yourself. Its no skin off my nose if you have to learn it the hard way.

It's needed and helps greatly if you want to do something like Alexi.
Writing intricit solo's and lead.
I and most people play what sounds good.
If it sounds good to the ear... No matter what notes it is... It is good.

In the end.... I don't care what some dip**** like you says.

Whoa, this threads changed a bit from when I was last in it. I think theory knowledge is important in writing music but many people, like Mustaine (I don't think Hetfield knows any music theory either) can write great songs without it. If it sounds good to the ear it's good, theory is important but what sounds good to you doesn't need to obey theory rules.

I don't play guitar to debate the musicial version of "truth and reason".
I'm more concerned about if it sounds good, then why.
I'll prolly work on some theory in the future.
I just don't see it as key.

The thing I love about Arch Enemy is they've managed to keep the same sound throughout the years. Doomsday Machine I think is a great release, Nemisis is my favorite song by them. I think Angela has a great voice, it's not ridiculously low like most death metal singers.
On the topic of Bodom, what do you think their next single is going to be? I know Headbanger's Ball loves to play In Your Face, you think Living Dead Beat might have a video coming out?

There are rumors going around that the title track is next, which is fine with me. Me first choices would either be Bastards of Bodom or If You Want Peace... Prepare for War though.

Lemme help with Myspace for what it's worth.
Go to, http://www.filelodge.com I believe it is.
It's a free hosting thing, up to 50 MB per file, 500 (I think) per account.
It's free.
Upload your mp3 to it. Change the title from.
"Chokehold(Cocked n' loaded".mp3 to 1.mp3 .
Some reason if you leave the whole title it can act up.
Then go to that, mygen.uk site or w/e it is.
Grab the html for "video and music".
Copy your file lodge link for the song,
paste it in.
Click generate. cut n paste your code into "about me" as it says.
BTW, select "embeded". (It forces your music on others, no stopping it:thumb:

I got it back from the shop yesterday.
2 weeks not playing+ 2 weeks in the shop= a month out of practice.
Sixpounder, I was doing fine. I started that after I got it back.
Needled 24/7, the intro solo and main lead riff I could play just fine.
Everything else though, mostly Raining Blood, really pointed out but bad and rusty my timing has gotten with stuff I played before.
I can play the rest of Raining Blood fine but,
The intro walkdown, My fingers are either wayyy ahead of my picking or the other way... I'm completly off on "Pull Harder"..
The part of Nightwish's Planet Hell, I had learned right before the neck warped over.
The quiet place, is fairly off on timing as well.
I could play all that stuff pretty much perfect before and I don't see the point in basically re-learning all that stuff.
I love playing Raining Blood most of all. BTW. I had played Raining Blood for a year.
end of story.... I don't feel like re-learning all that stuff. No point in playing it if the timings are so ****ed up.

It wasn't just bad... It was plain awful.
I had played everyone .. perfect/almost perfect before.
I just don't seem the point in learning all the songs over.
Cuz I have the complete wrong timings in my head, because I havn't played in a month.
I'd have to learn each song over to get it right.
It's not just,
My picking is rusty or something minor that I can fix in a week.

I'm learning Paginni's 5th Caprice at the moment. So I've taken a break from all the bodom stuff I've been learning. I'm gona use it as my main showpiece. I'm trying to get into a music school. (It's a highschool for arts in S.A) I can play the first thirty bars perfectly....but there are like 180 total...it took me a whole week to get the timimg and all the stretching right. But it's already pating off. My lead guitarist started playing tool and when he was done I played what I know of the Caprice and everyone was saying stuff like "Oh that takes real skill"...so my lead player was pissed.
I learnt some of that too but I've never heard anyone in the world play it cleanly at all apart from Becker, Vai and some classical guitarists, I'd be interested in how clean you could play it.

Are you learning it by ear? I'm fairly sure that in one issue of Guitar World Yngwie Malmsteen shows you how to play it. You may want to look it up.

I have that but it's an octave lower than I like it. Becker's version is better imo.
And
Yes, I've seen the Becker video, I've seen pretty much all Becker videos on the net.

Hatecrew Deathroll and Follow The Reaper are my favorites. Although they are all awesome, I like these best. Hatebreeder was really awesome, but I don't care for his vocals as much on that album. They seem sloppy or something.

Hatebreeder is by far my favorite album. Go listen to some Black Metal and those vocals will sound like Britney Spears
I don't usually pay much attention to harsh vocals unless they are unusually good, like Wintersun's or Arch Enemy's.

I do love most of the songs off FtR but there's a few on there that are a bit meh for me to LOVE it.
I recently went through a "OMGILOVEHATEBREEDERSOOMUCH" phase where i learnt all the songs so I ended up liking them all, but now they're getting a bit boring.
HCDR was the first album I actually bought, plus I loved Bodom Beach Terror, Needled and Sixpounder beforehand and the rest of it was just as brilliant.
AYDY I love too but not as much as HCDR.
Btw I love Hate Crew Deathroll.

Back then, Alexi had the perfect black metal voice. All he would've needed was reverb on his voice and an answering machine to record on.
It's really hard for me to pinpoint which album is my favorite. Right now I'm going through a Hate Crew Deathroll phase. The album is like brutal power metal; completely unique. I love the balance of soloing and riffing. I've been meaning to learn Lil' Bloodred Ridin' Hood, but I haven't finished tabbing it yet thanks to my homosexual school. Hopefully I can get it tonight and start getting the rhythm parts down.

HCDR almost seems like Groove/Power, just because it is such heavy thrash combined with power metal melodicness and leads.

I bought a Transkriber. It can slow music down remove vocals, remove channels to tab one guitar at a time, transpose into different keys, alter pitch, and do all kinds of stuff. It takes a few tries to get the hang of, but once you do it's easy. It gives me peace of mind knowing that it's always completely correct. It was expensive though, so I'm not sure it's entirely worth it, unless you're always tabbing difficult songs.

I detect some death metal too. It mixes a lot of metal into one album, and it's pretty unique.

Has anyone here ever watched that Young Guitar video of Jani from Sonata Arctica? If you havn't, and you have p2p, you should download it. Sorry, it is too big for me to take time for uploading. But anyway, the tab is on Mysongbook.com like most other songs, and it is an amazing thing to practice. At least if anyone needs something good to practice legato runs and sweeping. It's not just a practice tool though, it sounds damn good. Sorry if anyone thinks this is spam, but I just can't get over it. I absolutely cherish Reap 'n Roll licks, Passage to the Reaper, and now that Jani demonstration... oh so cool...
