A bit of a scuffle in the Power Metal thread...
First a few days ago I brought up my point about how Iced Earth is considered Power Metal a little too easily, and I thought that they were closer to melodic thrash stuff like Metallica in their prime. Everyone acted like I just said the dumbest thing ever yet I had a well thought out point that was backed up with as much evidence as I could, yet still people just flamed the hell out of me.
Then today we were talking about Iron Maiden in there and Riva said this is the Power Metal thread why are we talking about Maiden. Most people agreed that they were a big influence on Power Metal and that they should be allowed to be talked about in there, and I said they are about as Power Metal as Iced Earth. Riva then goes into this completely BS argument about how Maiden is closer to Melodic Death than they are Power Metal. I said Maiden sounds A LOT closer to Dragonforce than Arch Enemy, and first thing he says is suttin like Arch Enemy is garabge, I thought that was especially rude. Then he goes into this completely overgeneralized analysis on how Maiden is more like melodeath.
Strange. I didn't even know Riva knew much about metal. It sounds like he blew up over absolutely nothing. Some people around here are just like that, and I'm surprised it was Riva. He's usually much more reasonable then that.
As for Maiden being closer to melodic death then power metal, that's obviously false. It only takes a quick glimpse of each genre to realize that.
Ever notice how almost all arguments arise over what genre a band is, not how good their music is?
Yes, it's all quite pointless. I', somewhat of a genre nazi myself, but even I get tired of all of it when it gets extreme.

lol well most of us here would agree that Bodom could do a bit better with their lyrics. Some of them are okay but in general it's just a lot of screw you screw everyone I hate stuff (to be general about it).

I think you need to reconsider your responsibilities as a mod, you can't just go around saying whatever you want anymore. The mods that have been here for a long time are usually the most objective posters on the board, I think you need to work on that a little.

During your tour through Hollenthon's Vienna, you may feel the need to quench your thirst in one of Vienna's finest and most frequented hangout of certain black metal celebrities. One night a week, a few to a bunch get together at the Zeitstop. Come by to join Ali (your host) and toast among the hundreds of clocks that make up the Zeitstop's decor.
The Zeitstop is located in Vienna's 7th district, in the Neustiftgasse (Cafe Zeitstop, Fa. Sarkhosh, Neustiftgasse 6-8, A-1070 Vienna, Tel: 5264 770). This quaint establishment is open from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., 7 days a week. To say hello to Ali and other unexpected guests, take the U3 to Volkstheater. It is only a short stroll away to where time stands still.

I'd say save your money more, and buy an actual Gibson Les Paul (or Heritage Les Paul. It'll last you for life, and it's perfect for any kind of music.
If I would get a 7 string guitar, I'd probably go for one of those Ernie Ball 7 string John Petrucci styled ones, aside from the fact they cost a riduculous amount.

True, some of them are riduculously overpriced, but you do get what you pay for. The guitar has a terrific feel to it, you can use it to play many, MANY different styles of music (I use mine for metal, jazz, other stuff), and it really does sound amazing.

Yeah true. I choose a Fender Strat, 'cause I am yet another guitarist who started out on a Fender Squier Strat and still uses it to this day... (4 years only). I think Les Pauls are beautiful but I enjoy a strat sound more though... it's just my preference. I think Les Pauls sound absolutely sick with EMG's built in...

Oh, and for for some string skipping, try Scarified bt Gilberto if you haven't already.
The new version he plays on his own is better since it's got 2 bar s.k lick at the beginning, then the Bach part has s.k, and right at the end which is the hardest part.

Well I can't play it at the same speed at Paul but I can play it as clean because I choose not to play it as fast as possible or play along with the CD or whatever. There's no harm in learning the solos, the problem occurs when you ignore note definition and try and play it fast to impress people like some other people on here.
You could just use them as exercises that you practise everyday with a metronome, which is definately what I should be doing instead of sitting on here. :upset:

yea man, thats really fukking good to hear.
as far as playing a metronome goes, i always seem to WANT to use it with weird licks that dont fit into 4/4 that easily
like the intro to universal mind - liquid tension experiment...
the intro is played at 155 bpm, 16th notes, but the weird thing is the pattern only repeats after 4 measures, so the down beats dont match up like you would want them to ya know

Haha, yeah I know how that feels big time. Damn mall kids. Metalcore isn't too big, it's all hardcore. There is a difference between them, and when I thought the kids at the mall couldn't get worse, they got worse. The emo kids are either too cared to talk to me, or the try to whore all of the social world that surrounds them. All the kids that claim what I listen to is "cool" has never heard 90% of the bands I listen to, and/or only listen to bands they hear on the radio, or from the "popular kids" they like.

There's so much drama about bands near me right now, it's unbelieveable. Lineup changes and drummer wars, it's really frustrating and extremely depressing. I used to have a great band but it turned out that my drummer was a complete dick (although he was an awesome drummer), and our bassist/singer had a control-freak personality. In fact today there was a really big incident involving our old guitarist and a singer I know.

That can be bad, but as musician, it could be worth it. If you live in an area with plenty of bands and musical opportunities around you, that is definitely going to push you forward and make you a better musician. If you're like me and there's very little available, you end up sitting around doing nothing and wondering why everyone else is better then you. I've never been in a band and at the rate things are going, I most likely never will be before I leave for college next year. I suck too much to be in a band I think. I have strong expectations of myself and others, but I always feel the need to be the best over all player and song writter in the group. I would never fuss or be a "control freak" like some, but I would over work myself. Right now, since I don't know anyone I just practice for an hour or two a day (which is sadly all I seem to be able to handle). Since I don't know anyone, than I see myself as better than most kids around here (I am not trying to sound cocky or conceted). I can't seem to get better, 'cause I don't have the ability to practice for hours and hours like most people. Maybe I am just not practicing right...

I've been working on jazz for a while. I'm still a beginner at it, but I like it. It throws you very heavily into music theory. Unfortunately, due to limited practice time and repeated cancellations of lessons, I've been progressing very slowly.

I tried jazz once, and my teacher was pressing me to undo all the work I had done on picking. I'm a pretty solid alternate picker, but for some reason he thought it would have more "soul" if I memorized how I pick for certain lines. For example, if I were to play any scale he'd make up these stupid, pointless patterns (up, up, down, up, down, down, up, etc.) that would take a long time to learn, but wouldn't help me in the least. I already know my music theory, so I've given up jazz.

That sounds like a colossal waste of time. There's no sense in trying to re-learn pointlessly difficult picking patterns because it supposedly has more "soul".

I just get a tab and play. Listen to the song if I need to figure w/e out.
I did have to correct my picking a while into playing guitar though.
Forever I only downpicked and it slowed me down alot. Not to mention it was wicked on my hand/forearm.
It took me about a week of solid practice and then I realized how much better it is.
Long time ago. But... Only picking thing that ever meant anything.

It's a shame that so many people associate private lessons with bad experiences. I've heard about some truly awful people "teaching" others how to play, and it's almost sad that aspiring musicians should be stuck with such a horrible instructor. I've been taking lessons for well over two years and I have no regrests at all. My teacher is an incredible guitarist, knows more about all kinds of music thenI could ever hope to, and has taught me things that I know I would not have learned on my own. A bad teacher can be an extreme hindrance, but a good one can be the most valuable resource a musician will ever have.

Being a studio musician would be great, but as it stands I would need to build myself up a lot. It's not an easy thing. You have to be able to read music like a virtuoso.
That's not entirely true.. I'd bet that 90% of band members out there know very little theory, if any at all. A studio musician is obviously a different story.
I'd bet differently.
I know a bit theory right now, but I'm always ready to learn more. To me, being able to play things is only half of really being a musician. The other half comes from knowing how and why things work. And theory also seems like another way to put yourself further above non-musicians. Then again, I'm going to be a music major, so I'll be doing a hell of a lot of theory as time goes on.

I actually think that music theory can hinder your creativity. If you know the "rules" too well, you start to think only in those terms, and your own writing can become stagnant and uninspired. I've heard many, many songs that don't follow conventional rules associated with theory at all, but they find their own feel and convey something that someone well-educated in music theory could not. That's partly why I think that very few successful artists know theory.

I don't think this happens often. Theory teaches you how music works, but I'd be willing to bet that 90% of all guitarists who have mastered theory still write whatever they want, not thinking in terms of theory. Limiting yourself within those boundaries can do that, but only a very poor musician would do that to him/herself.

No way, man. People who I think should be kicked off vocal job are people like Fred Durst. As you can see, Bodom has many fans, who all LOVE Alexi like a god. So, don't bust out anything about the members. We love Alexi at vocals, even when others think he sucks.

Worst song on FTR...
I actually DO think it might be Hate Me. I really can't stand that song...
Edit: Sorry about the double posts. Is there any way to add a quote into an already written post?
The little button with the speech bubble is the quote button. Hit edit, copy what you want to quote, and insert. :thumb:
Well, maybe Hate Me isn't the worst, but it's one of the less good songs on the album.

Or Hellion if that counts, but it's not written by CoB so I guess it doesn't.

How can you not like Hellion? I thought that was one of their best covers.

Yeah, but it doesn't compare to their originals and I'm not really a fan of cover songs.

Hate Me is great. I'm less fond of Taste of my Scythe.
And Kissing the Shadows.

Taste of my Scythe would be another one of the weaker tracks on the album. Kissing the Shadows and Mask of Sanity are still my favourites.

A bit of a change of subject but what do you guys think of Alexis live guitar playing? I've seen a few vids and in some he's perfect and in others he's painfully sloppy, mainly from when he had his Jacksons.
More proof that ESP > Jackson. :p
I think the worst song on FTR is either Mask of Sanity or Taste of my Scythe. Really, all the songs are awesome.

Or proof that Alexi's getting better at guitar :D
I'm selling my Jackson V to get an ESP or Ibanez now, it's not really my kinda guitar.

Another question... I see a lot of nuts and non-knowledgable people label these guys as black metal. WTF, R U SERIOUS? Like immortal, Emperor, Early Mayhem, and Gorgoroth? I don't think so.
My personal diagnosis is Power Metal with Harsh vocals. They use entirely power metal song structures and extras, but jjust don't use clean vocals. I can live with people calling em Melodic Death Metal as well.

Jackson Rhoads EX with a Dimarzio X2N
It's from 1992 or so, I got a good deal on it but I want something a bit more versatile.
