well you sound like you don't know theory so i'll explain it the easiest way. A chromatic scale would include every note or fret on the fretboard so to practice using chromatics start anywhere on the fret board and play each finger consecutively one after another. Alternatively start at the first fret 1 2 3 4 on the low E string then the next string, the A string and up to the high e string and then move the first finger to the second fret and descend. This was the routine i ued evertime i picked up a guitar when i first strated out.

hey thanks for that. i will practice up

You're right they aren't that useful. Check out Flight of the Bumblebee by Petrucci though. A fair bit of that is chromatics.

MRDuCran
12-21-2005, 12:33 PM
1234 on every string isn't even fully chromatic, it's half.
The chromatic scale starting on A would be:

E---------------------------------------------------1-2-3-4-5----
B-----------------------------------------2-3-4-5----------------
G-------------------------------2-3-4-5--------------------------
D---------------------3-4-5-6------------------------------------
A-----------4-5-6-7----------------------------------------------
E-5-6-7-8--------------------------------------------------------

...Just incase some of you didn't know, although that one would be harder to play fast.

I don't care for chromatics, except maybe for warming up. If you honestly want good finger independence, take piano lessons! There's nothing better for your finger control than piano, in my opinion.

Shadows

I doa lot of scales and chromatics, and it's amazing how quickly your fingers can speed up just by doing chromatic stuff daily.

Unfortunately, school hit me hard this year, and I've been seriously reduced in my practice time. :(

i haven't learnt the whole song yet, but i too have problems with the beginning.

i always use my pinky; i.a.w.: i use all four fingers

I can play the whole thing perfectly (along with the cd)

It's just the first part of the solo I have trouble fingering

I also use all my fingers on the intro riff

Silenius

I've leant all of Bed of Razors (finally)

Does anyone else have trouble with the beginging of the solo?

What fingers do you use?
If you mean the bends, then this what I do: I hold the bends on the14th fret with my 2+3 fingers and fret the 12s with my 1. The rest of the solo is a piece of cake.

I always thought the guitar pro tab was funny because the bridge was tabbed like this:

D||------------------12--15--19--15--12--------------|
A||--------------13----------------------13----------|
F||----------12------------------------------12------|
C||------14--------------------------------------14--|
G||--15----------------------------------------------|
D||--------------------------------------------------|

---------------7--10--14--10--7-----------|
------------8--------------------8--------|
---------7--------------------------7-----|
------9--------------------------------9--|
--10--------------------------------------|
------------------------------------------|

------------------12--15--19--15--12----------15--||
--------------13----------------------13--12------||
----------12--------------------------------------||
------14------------------------------------------||
--15----------------------------------------------||

I can't play it, only because I haven't taken the time to learn. I'm in the mood to re-learn Kissing the Shadows, but I had it down pretty well over a year ago, so I'm a little out of practice in that song now. Anyhoo, before I learn any CoB, I'm in the mood to learn some great riffs. :)

Have we argued this before? I don't recall. Wintersun to me simply sounds like Norther with folk elements. The melodies Jaari writes sounds exactly like Norther, and often sounds like very generic power metal lead guitar. It fails to grab my attention because of lack of variety.

So basically, I think Bodom is nothing but variety and Wintersun is very monotonous. We're opposites on this, so I guess there's no point in arguing. :p

Yeah, I guess you're right... I have just been stuck in this rut I'm in for the last six to eight months, and I haven't really improved much... I need lessons :upset:
I'm in the same position. I haven't been able to do much of anything with guitar the past months, because my practice time has been so low. I was down to maybe a couple hours per week. :( Now that I'm off for Christmas I'm going to work back into my usual rigorous practice schedule and hopefully make some serious progress. My goal is to be shredding by the time I hit the three year mark, hopefully that's not too ambitious. Any improvement at this time will be well recieved since it's been so slow lately. :upset:

There's a difference between being able to "play something" and make something sound good, like the cd. I've had a lot of experiences with people saying they can play this and play that etc, but when I hear them do so, I can't help but laugh.
Example, some kid saying he can play 6 notes per beat at 120bpm (Serrana) and then the recording = complete crap.

Point is, Bed of Razors solo isn't easy just because it's slow. Those string skipped arpeggios will probably cause alot of people problems.

Sure but there are loads of scalar parts and stuff that are pretty easy. As for making it sound good, I guess you just have to master whatever you're playing to make it sound good, it'll come naturally after a while.

Silenius I completely agree about Wintersun. Jari totally pwns Alexi in technical skill, after listening to that album it's hard to deny that. As far as writing he is undoubably the best songwriter I've ever seen in my entire life. I don't think there are any songs more well written than any one song on that album, not even any Bodom songs. Wintersun I think is on course to be the best metal band ever to hit the face of this earth, one album isn't enough to judge that yet though. It's possible Alexi would even have trouble playing the solo to Beautiful Death or Death and the Healing. As far as the whole composition goes it's so extremely well layered that I hear a new thing everytime, and each instrument isn't so in your face that a lead guitar part isn't in their to be a blazing lead but only to contribute to the overall atmosphere of the music. An extremely unique way of writing music I must say, I don't see a lot of it like that, true genius at work.

No Roope is better, he's faster and cleaner. He just doesn't play many leads in CoB cause it's Alexi's band but he's been around since the 80's and is really good.

Well, both Roope and Alexi did solos live, and Alexi's was much faster and more technical. Also in the Passage To The Reaper video, both of them solo during the song they play for Demonstration 2, and again, I think Alexi's soloing was much faster. Don't get my wrong, Roope is an awesome player, but from what I've seen, I think Alexi might have one up on him.

Although, Roope might not have been playing at his top skill. Alexi is the main focus of the band, and generally gets most of the credit and glory of being the "super player". Since Roope is a new member, he might not have wanted to take that glory away from Alexi. He also might not feel the need to play extremely fast. Some guitarists tend to be quite modest with their skill, and don't show off.

It is tough to say who is better because you never know how hard or easy it is for them to play what they are playing. Sure, Alexi might be playing faster, but that doesnt mean Roope CAN'T go faster than Alexi.

That doesn't mean he can't be surpassed by Alexi.

In all of the playing they've done together since Roops joined, nothing Roope has done has been on the same level as Alexi. That may be because CoB is Alexi's band, but even Roope's solo on the last tour was nothing compared to any of Alexi's.

Needled isn't hard... but the solo to it is impossible (only to me apparently)

An easier song to learn though is deffinately Sixpounder. I can never learn things by ear, but somehow I can play alot of it perfect from learning it by ear. Probably just because it's slower paced.

I think Sixpounder is much harder. The rymthm was really tough to get exact.

I always find it harder to play riffs that consist of cords then lead riffs. I know it makes no sense.

I find the verse in Needled 24 7 (the cords) harder to play perfect then the lead.

The intro solo isn't that hard and the main lead riff is easy and sweeet.

Anyway, to the guy who wanted to but Follow The Reaper, music stores around HERE at least, always have Are You Dead Yet, Follow The Reaper, and Hate Crew Deathroll in stock. I would go buy it there if I were you..

For me it's the same as blue3, the HMV's near me only have HCDR, Hatebreeder and AYDY. No Something Wild or FtR. If they did have them, trust me, I would have them by now. :thumb:

I finally listened to a few more tracks off of AYDY, even though I've had the album for almost as long as it's been out now. I like it more than I did upon the first few listenings, but it's still not going to top old Bodom IMO.

A lil' question...

I know Mr. Laiho writes all the lyrics and music for Bodom and maybe Sinergy too, but does he actually record it all, like both rhythm sides, and all solos and harmonies? (i.e James Hetfield. Kirk used to only record the solos and James and Lars would write all the music and lyrics most of the time.)

I'm just suprised that Kirk and Roope don't feel worthless. I mean not writing or recording anything for the band so basically not getting any credit. (Unless Roope does record, which is what I'm asking) :)

THANKS

Roope probably does record, you can hear the tone difference of the two guitars in the songs. Unless Alexi uses Roope's gear to record, which I doubt that he does.

Especially when they have back-to-back solos. I was just listening to one of the songs on AYDY (cant remember which one) and I heard that different tone and thought "Cool, they gave Roope a solo."

Warheart, it's my favorite song by them ever. The mix between power metal guitars and black metal drums/singing is just pure orgasmness.

Mine is the self titled song of the band, Children Of Bodom. The intro is awesome, and the lead is great. The whole song overall brilliant.

It's tough to decide on one favorite for me. Warheart is amazing, as is Downfall and Bed of Razors.

Especially when they have back-to-back solos. I was just listening to one of the songs on AYDY (cant remember which one) and I heard that different tone and thought "Cool, they gave Roope a solo."
Probably If You Want Peace... Prepare For War. I think that's the only one where they go back and forth soloing, plus a simultanious solo. I <3 that song.

I agree. My favorites from the new album are Are You Dead Yet?, Trashed Lost and Strungout, Punch Me I Bleed, Living Dead Beat, and If You Want Peace...Prepare For War. The more I listen to the album, the more i seem to like it. When I first heard it, I didn't really like any of them, but I've been listening to it more and more and really paying attention to all the details, and I really seem to like the new sound. I like both old and new Bodom, and they are one of those bands that I can listen to a whole album of their's without having to skip songs that I hate.
