I'd think a custom guitar like what Alexi plays would be very expensive.
My guitar has two pickups.
EMG esqe but not EMG. Jackson's "own" version.

I haven't been in this thread for a long time....so in a nutshell, what can someone say about "Are you Dead Yet"? Is it worth getting, which bodom album does it sound most similar to (if any), and anything else I should know if I'm looking to buy it.
Thanks!
i can't really describe what AYDY? is like, but i like it.
also, i did CoB rip off the Nightwish riff from She Is My Sin in Touch like an Angel of Death, or did Nightwish rip off Bodom?

In my opinion it's just as good as the other albums, just in a different way.
It's more "american" or "industrial" as people describe it. It sounds most like Hate Crew Deathroll, i.e Sixpounder and Angels Don't Kill type stuff as it's all in drop C.
You might of heard Trashed, Lost and Strungout which they released last year as a single, well that's on it.

Which riff? I've listened to both pretty extensively, and I've heard no similarities between the two...
If they DID, Nightwish probably ripped off, simply because Wishmaster came out a few years after Something Wild.

In a word, the album is amazing.
Depsite what many say, I don't see what's American or industrial about it. It's much heavier and more riff-based than before, plus they use keyboards, but they don't play anything that really fits into those two descriptions.
I say buy it. :)

in She Is My Sin, from about 13 seconds in. and in Touch Like An Angel Of Death, from about 21 seconds, with vocals over the top for some of it.

Music would be a much more peaceful world is people woul remember this. Unfortunately, people always feel the need to build up their music over someone else's, yielding competition and hostility.
I could write a reasearch paper on this topic. I think about it all the time, and it frustrates me.

It certainly would be more peaceful. There's so many people on this board that just come into threads about people they dislike and bitch about them which triggers 5 page arguments...so sad, this is exactly why Alexi hates the internet and I don't blame him.

If you're just starting guitar, your best bet would be with a Squier Affinity Fat Strat pack. Comes with everything you need, and the guitar isn't utter crap like other starter packs (cough Ibanez cough).
Plus, the guitar will last you a while...I still play my Squier a lot, even after buying a $1400 Les Paul.

That sucks about it not being the new one but still, I'd wanna see it. I'll probably end up ordering them off Ebay soon enough, I should be ordering the new one in a few days.
ALSO
For anyone whos bothered about the AMAZINGLY high price of Alexi's signature guitars, you can get them for the 3rd of the price if you just look for an "ESP SV Standard". Everything's the same apart from the neck inlays and they come with 2 pickups, EMG 81's.

ESPs have really bad sound quality though...I think so, anyways.
I'd say, if you're really serious about buying a guitar, go with either a Fender or a Gibson. It may cost significantly more, but you can get a significantly better guitar that you can use for a whole bunch of different styles of music.

Gibsons may work, but they still can't hold a candle to guitars built for metal, unless you put some appropriate pickups in there.

Are you joking? Gibsons can be great for metal...plus, you can play ANY type of music on them that requires a guitar. You name it.

Maiden = not a good example.
They're versatile, but still not as good as guitars built specifically for metal. I've heard Gibsons (low level LPs and really expensive ones) played with metal settings and it wasn't the greatest sound by any means.
Plus I find Gibsons to be the most uncomfortable thing in the world.

I've been playing guitar for a while, and this stuff is not even difficult to play, he just plays sweep arpeggios and does 16th note scale runs at 200+ bpm, any guitarist who's been playing for at least a year can play this stuff, if you want some good technical guitar work try nickelback. When I first started guitar I was under the impression that the greatest guitar in the world was a Stratocaster. I'm using my own experience and presuming that other people have/had similiar views which maybe I shouldn't be. They are pretty much what most people will think of when they hear the word 'guitar'. I guess the Strat shape did end up more or less being the template for most of the guitars on the market.
I admit that I'm slightly biased though. I went from a Squier Strat which would probably be better suited to starting fires than for playing music to an Ibanez RG1570. Whenever I muck around on my Squier and then go on to play my Ibanez it just feels so much better.
I really should try some of the more up-market Fenders though. I really shouldn't be judging Fenders on the experience I've had with Squier's

I'm interested though...how do you think they're overrated?
Because everyone in the entire guitar-playing world seems to love them for no apparent reason. If you try to bring up the insane amount of hum and feedback, they tell you to "get a Fat Strat (w/ humbuckers)". Why not get a guitar that was made to be used with humbuckers instead? If you try to bring up the terrible rib-snapping discomfort of the Telecaster, they tell you "it's a working-man's guitar".
Fender reportedly has the "best quality", "best sound" and "best playability", and being the proud owner of a large Fender amp and a Strat, I have to say that it's just not true. The amp is just terrible, and I had to replace the bridge of the Strat within a year of buying it.
The last thing I have against Fender is the myth that "every good guitar player played a Fender, including the best guitar player of all time, Jimi Hendrix!!!!" I don't think I need to elaborate.
In other news, COB just passed by my town. :( Damn sold-out small theatres.

I get very discouraged at all the disbelief towards the new album. The way I percieve it, most people dislike the album because they were expecting more power metal, and nothing new. This album was a very drastic change in the band's sound, so naturally people will be shocked and unprepared. But the immediate disregard of a non-power metal Children of Bodom seems like a discredit to the band. People dub the new album "uninspired" and "simple". To me, this could not be farther from the truth. After so many years of making their legendary power metal, the band felt it was time to break out of the boundaries that critics had put around them and make something new and innovative. No band has ever done anything remotely like Are You Dead Yet, least of all the American "metalcore" bands that I hear them compared to every once in a great while. Aside from the new sense of creativity put forth, the album is not the least bit simplistic in the music. I often lay and just listen to this through headphones - it's amazing what you can pick up from music when you're up close and without distraction, especially music as multi-dimensional as this. Listening to the layering of the guitar riffs and the keyboard arrangements, I can honestly say that this is the most technical album they've ever made. I'm sure many disagree simply because of the lack of neoclassical lead guitar that Alexi is famous for, but they're merely talking themselves out of a huge treat. As a guitarist, I enjoy the new album just as much, and in many ways more than their older records.
Lead guitar is intertwined with heavier riffing throughout in such a way that the technicality of it is often subtle, yet defined. In songs like the title track, Bastards of Bodom, or We're Not Gonna Fall I was not only impressed at the talent involved in the palying, but also the level of maturity that the band has adapted to in playing lower, heavier music. Nothing has been dumbed down. The instruments are playing things they haven't even considered for over a decade, and as a result, they've come up with music that nobody ever thought would come from this band, I say they deserve every ounce of credit they get for this record. If they become more popular than ever, then it's good to see that creative and talented bands are finally getting recognition for what they do. I would have no problem whatsoever watching this band, who happens to be my favorite, go further down this route and experiment even more. Some bands seem worn out after they do their thing and then try in vain to do something new, but with the newest album, it seems that CoB is making a fresh start for themselves.
Wow, that was long.
No C on a tuner....!!!
Not every tuner is chromatic. My first tuner only had the 6 open notes.

/big thing on AYDY
I find the album to be lacking any instance of being memorable or worth being listened to over and over. I have nothing against bands changing their sound in little steps or in giant steps, but they did not pull off the change in sound on this album. Maybe later albums will prove their change in sound to be successful, but not this one.
And I personally enjoy bands who change over time, but that is if they do it correctly.
And quite frankly, I could care less about how technical a band or an album is. The ability to have solid song writing is what I look for, and that is where they fall short on this album, by a long shot.
And to put it short, just because it is new/original/different/creative doesn't mean it is always good.
Shadows
12-16-2005, 07:57 PM
I can understand that. People are of course entitled to opinions, and no two people will percieve the album the same way. Most of the negative opinions I read about seem to embody the "it's not power metal, it's not CoB" philosophy, and I think that's a terrible methodology to follow. I can't account for everyone who hears it, but I'm disappointed nonetheless that so many turn their back on it, even if it is for perfectly valid reasons.
Creativity and technicality don't make an album, but they sure help. When a band tries to do the same thing for their entire career, they become worthless over time. I'd much rather have them progress from Something Wild to Are You Dead Yet then to have them release Follow the Reaper for another ten years, but I've come to realize that many just aren't as open to such an extreme change.

To comment towards what shadows said,
If you listen as to how each albums differers, you will see each album got heavier each time.
Something wild is very raw. Hatebreeder had extensive melodies but was heavier.
Follow the reaper is where what I'm talking about really shows,
It's heavy, the hardest stuff to date at that point. It retains it's sense of melody and power metal.
Songs like, Everytime I die and Follow The reaper really show the progression towards a heavier sound. Next comes,Hate Crew Deathroll,
Songs like Bodom Beach Terror and Sixpounder show a further turn towards a heavier sound.
Then follows AYDY.
People shouldn't act shocked and cry foul. If you listen to all their albums and songs, they clearly have built towards a heavier sound.

Now everything I could say or know about the album aside, I listen to the other albums equally about 10x more than AYDY. I can say what I want, but the facts show there I obviously don't prefer it. As far as technicality, the solos are as hard as they ever were, they have always had pretty tough solos, they've never made them any easier or harder. The leads, not nearly as tough as some Hatebreeder stuff, try playing the chorus lead to Downfall and you'll have your hands in a knot, but something like Bastards of Bodom won't be nearly as challenging, although still pretty up there. The riffs they had were never challenging, and if anything are more technical than before, but they definately go towards a heavier sound. The thing is, their old stuff was original. The whole heavy riffing thing has been done by countless American bands, and a lot of Bodoms riffs are pretty bland cliches *coughwerenotgonnafallcough*. The blend of Black and Power metal in the earlier albums is really what I think made them so great, so you can't quite disregard the genre change like some of you do. The small black metal influence that had in the drums and vocals is gone, and the large power metal influence they had in the guitars and keyboards had been diminished to almost nothing. Would I really consider AYDY to be Bodom? I don't think so. If you asked someone who'd never heard the band before to listen to Warheart and then In Your Face my guess is the majority wouldn't say it's the same band. I think that is pretty good evidence right there that the style change is drastic enough to completely excuse the "AYDY haters". Personally I think the band devolved, not evolved. AYDY is 75% American Metal, and I think dedicated fans to Bodom and to Power Metal will all tell you European Metal >>>>>> American Metal. And although the songs are equally as complicated to play as the old stuff, writing them would be a signifigant amount easier. The riffing style in the new album as Bobo said is bland for the most part, and a lot of it is overused C power chords and slight ripoffs of new American metal bands. To my ears which I would consider as far as metal goes, "european ears", the riffing on the new album is just boring and seems to go out of it's way to be heavy. The attitude that the music gives off, we may not realize, has been their from the start. Power Metal in music Bodom may have been, but the lyrics with the exception of possibly Warheart and Deadnight Warrior, were very closely related to Punk. The music now I say completely fits the lyrics and has that "in your face" (no pun intended) attitude. I think this is kind of what Bodom has been going for all along, and as ManMadeGod had said, they have only been getting heavier as they go along. I honestly think the first 3 albums were a fluke, and Alexi was going through some kind of phase. The new stuff is where his heart is, and it's almost like a girl leading you on, because now we have this old Bodom that a lot of us love and cherish but we realized that's not where they were actually planning on going. In conclusion, you can say what you want about AYDY, but I think that each side has a full right to their opinion. The haters have a completely valid reason to hate, and you can not pass off their love for the old genre. The people who don't hate it also have full reason to not hate it because it does give off the message and attitude Bodom originally intended for, and of course the exagerations that it is just "metalcore" are not true, although it is in that direction it is nowhere near the degree of metalcore, just in the realm of current American Metal.
If I cared as much about school as I did about Bodom I'd probably be writing better papers...

Noooooooooooooooooooo not that song. It just as good as the others but DAMMM is it overplayed/overmentioned. :upset:
Warheart, Towards Dead End, Children of Bodom, Downfall, Lake Bodom, Chokehold, Black Widow would satisfy me more at least.
Top 5 whored songs:
1. SIlent Night, Bodom Night
2. Bed of Razors
3. Needled 24/7
4. Hate Me
5. Kissing the Shadows.

Oh, Kissing the Shadows is another overrated song IMO just because of the sweep picking in the solo. I don't think the actual song comes close to being one of their best, but I'm the only person that thinks that so whatever.

I really should learn some more Bodom songs. Or at least solos. I usually just have to move the solos down 1 step so I don't have to go out of standard.
I can play the interlude/2nd solo in Sixpounder (the only part of that song I really like) to some degree, the solo in Needled 24/7.
...
So really not many. I'm going to try and get around to learning the Hate Me! and the Kissing the Shadows solo. Over-rated or not, they're still amazing.

Touch like Angel of Death is the best. Second would be Lake Bodom.

Chokehold is a very fun song to learn. I don't find it to be as difficult as their others. Besides, most of it is easy to play CORRECTLY because of Alexi's Young Guitar DVD thing, which shows alot of the riffs and stuff. Besides, if anyone reads Guitar World, Alexi had a column in that, which showed how to play basicly everything. I believe one song that should be tabbed out correctly is... nevermind... I think all of HCDR should be, just because I see so many mistakes on what is already available for it. I would do it myself, although I have a really bad ear. All I have fixed for myself was the riffs to Sixpounder.

I think I can play about 80% of the songs on each album by Bodom, I completely whore them. I don't learn the solos if I can't play the solos perfectly just incase I build up sloppy technique at that specific thing.
I can play the rhythms of:
Lake Bodom
Warheart
Silent Night, Bodom Night
Bed of Razors
Towards Dead End
Black Widow
Children of Bodom
Downfall
Bodom After Midnight
Everytime I Die
Hate Me

Yeah, Bodom Beach Terror is fun too! Although, I suck, and can't play solos. I am not fast enough I guess. I am still trying my best to build up speed, but I am not sure how. I can do easy sweep licks... I suck at legato. I can trem pick fast as hell, but my fingers don't move nearly as fast It's all too sloppy. Especially when after almost 4 years of playing, I am just learning to use my pinky.

I think Bodoms stuff is actually tricky to get perfect, and I always compare myself with the cd, meaning it's very tough trying to play things exactly like Alexi, and to be honest, I don't think many people would be able to do it. I've never heard any decent recordings of Bodom songs so I guess that means most other people find them hard too...

In the Hate Me! solo during the first run there's a part that looks like...
E---17-18-20-22--
B-------------------
Should you play that with all four fingers or should you be cheap and play the A on the 22nd fret on B. I tried doing it with all four fingers and it's kind of tough but all I'd need to do would be to practice it.
Can anyone here play that solo? If so how do you play that part. Even if you can't you can still give advice.

It dosen't really matter how you play it... as long as it's the right note... unless you wan't to be exatacly like Alexi, then you would have to figure out how he plays it. But I mean whatever is the most comfortable.
At least in my opinion

Toaster
12-20-2005, 05:38 PM
Generally no one can play too well with all four fingers on one string. It's highly likely Alexi either uses two strings like you said, or he slides up with his ring/pinkie finger.
I also have no idea which run you're talking about.. what's the play time at the point of that run?

Yeah, it doesn't matter as long as you're hitting the right note. But in my opinion, you should try to use four fingers, because if you practice it and you perfect it, than it will just mean you have improved. But, what's comfortable is good too.

Some people say that's sloppy but I think if it sounds great and is comfertable to play... Then it works.

well in my opinoin if I may...you should practice chromatics up and down the fretboard starting slowly and faster as each of your fingers become more independant. Most people find it hard to to use the pinkey because i think it shares the same muscle to some degree with the third finger (ring) so practicing using chromatics can help develope the pinkys independeence. I use to practice chromatics everytime i pick up the guitar and it helped a lot. You should also try chromatic triplets and other sequences. This is what helped me.

well you sound like you don't know theory so i'll explain it the easiest way. A chromatic scale would include every note or fret on the fretboard so to practice using chromatics start anywhere on the fret board and play each finger consecutively one after another. Alternatively start at the first fret 1 2 3 4 on the low E string then the next string, the A string and up to the high e string and then move the first finger to the second fret and descend. This was the routine i ued evertime i picked up a guitar when i first strated out.
