Just listened to IYF, not quite sure what to think yet. Whoever said it sounds metalcorish, I'd be lying if I didn't agree with you somewhat. It definitely has a bit of that vibe. Also, the industrial elements were certainly there, as predicted. Not a bad tune at all, but certainly is another new sound for them.

Yeah, It's definaltly different. I like it though.

The intro sounds a bit metalcore. A lot of metalcore bands repeat 1 note like that.
1 tone repeat. hate me verse, kissing the shadows verse, and everytime I die intro which is played at some parts of the song....it's kinda like the main riff

Or, almost anything off of Victory Records, if you want crappy generic metalcore.

KsE is awesome...But then there's Hawthorne Heights :(

That's a pitiful mainstream Emo band (Hawthorne Heights)

THere's the more popular Metalcore bands, but then there's some that kind of remain underground that maintain the backbone sound of Metalcore. KsE is barely metalcore. I'd put them under NWOAHM right now.

AA-12
08-05-2005, 01:49 PM
Hawthorne Heights also isn't metalcore. I'll make a YSI/List of some of what I believe are the best metalcore bands.

Shattered_Future

The hell KsE isn't metalcore...

True, they are head and shoulders above the rest of the metalcore scene, and they have a vocalist who actually SINGS, you can't deny that they are metalcore. The chugging riff style is unmistakable.

And Hawthorne Heights isn't really emo either...i dunno what they are though. I just call them crap.

I'm just curious if CoB did anything to the song themselves. They couldn't have just gone, "Let's cover that song!" I have a feeling it was more like "Let's add [this and that] to that song and cover it!"

Judging by the one new song I've heard, I'd say it sounds great. Almost every other person here would say the opposite.

Except me.

So far, not only does In Your Face not sound metalcore at all, but it also sounds nothing like HCDR. I think IYF is very melodic thanks to Janne. Hardly opposite of pro-melody.

 Definately. Also, they're supposed to be speaking in Suomi in one part of the song. That should be interesting. Has anyone ever listened all the way to the end of Hate Crew Deathroll (the song) and heard them talking (and making fun of, it sounds like) the one riff in Sixpounder? It's great. No one is puking, they're still working at recording I think. Either that or just messing with each other. The humming you hear, do do do doooo! thing, is one of the riffs from Sixpounder! That's what I was talking about.

You can see hardcore punk influences on most of HCDR and on IYF (thus why I call it metalcore, hardcore punk + metal). Also the opening riff on The Nail is pretty punk. The lyrics on HCDR and judging from the songtitles of Are You Dead Yet? Are extremely punk influenced.

Wow, I just discovered that Oops I Did It Again was a cover of a Louis Armstrong song. I am severely confused because that doesn't seem like something he'd sing, or Britney Spears cover. The lyrics are like gay 21st century pop, why would Louis Armstrong have written them in like the 60s?

Well, I can see hwew he was coming from. If the song had some other guy listed as the writer, than it would make perfect sense for him to think it was original. Actually, if some other guy was credited with writing it, then it may actually be illegal...so I think we all had our legitimate motives. :)

And it showed up? The mods said the search got corrupted after the database crash.
Yeah, it worked. It was discussed sometime after the crash so I think that may have something to do with it. I had to strip down the search querry for it to work, but it gave me exactly what I was looking for.

Iai

Yeah, the explanation that it's too old is pretty much spot on. Especially in the case of an artists with such a huge body of work as Louis Armstrong - the copyrighters probably wouldn't have brothered with the more obscure stuff, leaving in the public domain. That technically makes not listing Armstrong as legal, though immoral.

The fact that somebody quoted it as an 80s original is pretty off - Armstrong had been dead for 9 years by that point.

edit: he seems to be very quiet now...
I was on the phone to my girlfriend, if you must now.

Shadows
08-06-2005, 01:22 PM
I suppose since the song is so old and Armstrong has been dead for a while, the copyright laws don't restrict against using it. It's still not cool for them to take the credit though.
I was on the phone to my girlfriend, if you must now.

yeah that's true. but that wasn't really the point. the point was that it's a cover. btw the one who said he thought it was some 80's song isn't at all as reliable as the other one (who's at gates of metal where bodom played half an our ago)

I don't see why not, they use all sorts of different ideas. If you look at Alexi's influences you'll see it's pretty varied and he writes music in a very original way.

I am not a fan of punk either. It's very unmusical and they all seem to try to hard to be rebellious. Unfortunately on HCDR and most likely AYDY Bodom's lyrics are extremely punk based, it kind of bothers me. Although, their lyrics before were terrible too, but at least back then it was harder to understand them.

Ha, yeah I thought so for a while too...and a lot of it is, but you can't expect punk to be complex, it's meant to be simple and driff driven. When punk started, I think the part of idea was to rebel against the image, what they saw as commercialization, and the high technical standards of rock, and give people who didn't have access to the resources needed to become successful a way to express themselves and get their message across..which usually a social or political one.

I personally think Hatebreeder is the best album by a decent margin, but many will argue Follow The Reaper is better. As a huge powermetal fan it makes sense I like Hatebreeder more, It's a much more powermetalish album.

I can't peticularly say I love all the tracks on FTR. Everytime I Die, Mask of Sanity, and Bodom After Midnight are all just ok to me. Hatebreeder on the other hand has no track I can't say I adore.

Bodom After Midnight is my favorite song by Bodom...So is Bed Of Razors....

Bed Of Razors has potential but I really wish it had a shred solo. I love the use of octaves those during that sweet lead, it was my inspiration to the lead in 1 of my songs you might have noticed.

Bodom After Midnight is ok, I don't see anything special about it.

Hey guys. Giant megapost; I’ve missed a lot.

What's wrong with liking punk? I myself love a lot of punk.

Same here; got my roots in punk. \m/

It has more substance. I thought Alexi's tone on the In Your Face solo sounded weak and didn't stand out against the rest of the band.

Agreed, I didn’t like the vocals either. Though, that was the only part of the song that I didn’t enjoy. I thought the solo was a little weak too.

That's because some parts aren't him, they put some of the britney's vocals in. lol no, I know you weren't talking about that :p I thought it sounded like him...I'd be able to recognize Alexi's vocals anywhere.

They aren’t Britney’s vocals, it’s a female (Jonna Kosonen) who used to be part of a Finnish pop duo called Nylon Beat.

Yeah, it’s pretty sad. I remember when Jessica Simpson was just being discovered, and everyone thought her song was so unbelievably catchy and hip and new. Turns out the entire song – with the exception of her vocals and “lyrics” – was a ripoff of the song Jack and Diane.

Refused - New Noise
AFI - Silver and Cold

Aw, this song is so not the best! Bleed Black, The Nephilim, The Despair Factor or Paper Airplanes (Makeshift Wings).

For some reason, I always hated punk in all shapes and forms. The music always appeared so simple and so meaningless.

I disagree, I don’t think punk is meaningless. Most of the really good punk, especially the older stuff is about being political and active for what you believe in and if I might be so bold as to say… “stickin’ it to the man”.

This place is dead and the Hatecrew forum is dead...

I left and everything fell apart, huh?
;)

Hatebreeder is definately my favorite album, and I think it gets very overshadowed by FTR.

Hatebreeder is a masterpiece, but Follow the Reaper is a masterpiece in deathy-melodicness.

It's good to know we're aware of where we stand :)

I love the song. Anyone who doesn't is doomed to Poison albums for the rest of their life.

Why do you ask if I'm having a good day? I just got back from buying a few CDs plus a mic for my computer, so I can now record music onto my CPU. I am in a pretty good mood. :)

I agree that it's so hard to pick just five. I love every song off of every album they've ever put out, so it's quite a challenge.

Yes I agree with Leah, you can't pick just five. Also I like some better when I'm in certain moods.

After listening to Arch Enemy enough, I have concluded in no way can In Flames be called Melodeath. Arch Enemy is Melodeath, they are death metal, they are melodic. In Flames is just melodic, besides the vocals, which are actually quite weak, they have nothing death about them. Arch Enemy has many "Deathy" parts in their songs. In Flames is just heavy and extremely melodic, I don't really know what to call them.

Good choice for #1 Shattered Future ;)

1. take a guess....
2. Follow the Reaper
3. Hatebreeder
4. Needled 24/7
5. Bed of Razors

And that list, other than the first song, is completely arbitrary, since we had to choose 5 :p

Kissing the Shadows if my favorite song too. I think there is no questions asked when it comes to that being their best song. It completely destroys everything else they have in terms of melody, riffs, solos, keyboard, and drums.

Dimmu Borgir - Stormblown

- All Light Has Faded (away)

- God's Surrender - Revelation of Doomsday

I always wondered how they managed to make Kissing the Shadows so popular. That song was composed and recorded right nit he studio. They tried to hurry up and write a new song for FtR because they thought the album was too short. Now it's widely considered their best song ever.

That's not a good thing to think. Writing and performing your own music is so much more of a thrill than just listening or covering other bands. You should give it a try and see what you come up with.

Ah, guys. In Flames was one of the founding bands of the whole gothenburg sound in melodic death metal. I don't think anyone comes closer to gotherburg than them, maybe Dark Tranquility. Arch Enemy? Gothenburg? No way. Also to the death metal thing, listen to their old music, it was definitely death.

About the HB vs. FTR thing, I like HB more. FTR was made so good because of the people who produced it. I'd confidently say that it has the best production of any metal album ever made.

Shattered_Future

Arch Enemy doesn't have the Gothenburg sound, no...there's no denying they're melodic death though.

Shadows

I think newer Arch Enemy is somewhat Gothenburg. I was listening to Doomsady Machine and Black Earth yesterday. Both have riffs in them that sound exactly like something In Flames would do.
