Hey Leah, check out the forum. I added a new banner. It's simple but I like it. What do you think?

Sweet banner. :p

That Bed Of Razors video is cool...only thing is the keyboards are too loud.

IheartSP - Cool! It'll be cool to actually hear them. Did you tweak anything according to my review?
No, not yet. I have like 8 bars left in my latest song which I am gonna finish sometime this week. After that I'll go back and revise our songs based on you and Flames' reviews.

I didnt see a Children of Bodom thread so i decided to make one myself. If you want to talk about this amazing band then this is the place to do it. Lets get the ball rolling.

What is your favorite Bodom song?

Follow the Reaper. Now if only they payed a real vocalist we'd have the perfect band. I hate Alexi's voice, he should stick to guitar.

/has yet to get new Nevermore CD :(

I agree with ya, Squirrel, metalcore screaming tends to get annoying after a while (i.e. Bury your Dead, Atreyu, From Autumn to Ashes, Still Remains...). A lot of it doesn't have a lot of range, it's just the same sound over and over. Michael Akerfeldt, however, is a madman (not saying Opeth is metalcore, calm down dudes, I know better, just showing an example of what I like).

I do like singing, as well. Just not when it's done crappily (like most metalcore bands :) ) I'm not raggin' on metalcore, because I dig the music, but the vocals in general suck.

I do love Trivium's vocals though...

Why do I have a feeling that there's going to be a lot more "singing while not actually singing" from Alexi on the new CD? "Angels Don't Kill", "Thrashed Lost and Strungout", "Knuckleduster"...

my first song was angels dont kill, which i think is why i still prefer the newer stuff over the older stuff such as something wild...but i still greatly enjoy hatebreeder and follow the reaper...i like the newer vocals better, to me the vox in hatebreeder sounded a little too sloppy, and the vox in follow the reaper were a little too raspy for my taste...the vocals in hatecrew were my favorite along with the new stuff, but the guitar work in follow the reaper is by far my favorite.

Yeah the first song you hear by a band can greatly influence what parts of them you like, in this case whether you prefer newer stuff like hatecrew or older stuff like something wild. I like something wild better, partly because the first song i heard by them was red light in my eyes part 1

Mine was either Kissing the Shadows or Falling the Reaper. Someone I knew got me to listen to them, and I remember thinking the instrumental part of the song was absolutely incredible, but that it sounded like something crawled down the throat of the lead singer and died. Then again, that was when I was first getting into metal, and I couldn't stand harsh vocals. Since then that style's really grown on me, and I really like Alexi's vocals.

What would you guys say is the easiest/funnest riff in a CoB song? I've only been playing guitar seriously for like 6 months and I'd like to play some CoB. I can play the opening riff to Bodom After Midnight but that's it.

I feel like I'm going to cry. That was full fledged metalcore right there, with some industrial in it. Say goodbye to Power Metal, for Bodom is no more. Alexi, I can't believe you could pull a Metallica like this. I don't care what oyu all say, we all love Bodom here yes but I bet half of you lie and say you like it just because it's labelled Bodom.

Sliptallica I know you like Metalcore tho, so I bet you are happy for the change, but in my book this is blasphemy. I have lost a lot of respect for Bodom right now, and I am crushed.

It's just one song. Sixpounder was straight riffing without the symphonics, and you couldn't just assume that all of HCDR was like that, because it sure as hell wasn't.

Metallica's Ride THe Lightning was a true thrash album, but if Escape was the first cut you heard, you might think otherwise.

What I'm saying is, lighten up, it's just one track. *downloads*

It doesn't even have a single trait of Metalcore though. I don't get your logic. There's no more hardcore punk influence than there was before, and there isn't even a breakdown.

That just sounded like a great Metal song to me.

I love In the Shadows I don't see a problem with it. It's just that if you played me this song and you played me something from Hatebreeder I wouldn't be able to tell you it was the same band. There are no similarities left. The vocals are different, the keyboard isn't really powermetal anymore. The guitar is way heavier and there aren't really any leads. The riffs weren't even that great.

That's called evolving. Bands do it, it normally makes them better.

The light just went out in my neighbor's window.

It is odd. It's not always for $$$++ though. It could be to get more radio play and fans, to be more relevant, or it's just the type of music they want to play.

These aren't really hardcore ways of doing things, but it does seem appealing to be a better known band. And bands don't just make music they don't like, they often pick styles that they like, just not as much as their main genre.

I'm sure a lot of local metal bands compromise to classic rock, which is their second favorite genre, because it's more agreeable and easier to get gigs.

Kthx.

What's Metalcore about that song? Just because it's a tad fast and has some more palm muting? That has nothing to do with Metalcore, it's just a move in a heavier direction.

Also, the term sellout is so stupid. What's wrong with the band wanting to make a more popular type of music? It's there job to please the world with their music so they can make the money they need to pay for making the record, and to live. If they can do that and enjoy making the music, who cares what you think?

Have you ever noticed that when bands evolve they become more popular? That's a common statement. Have you ever considered they become more popular because they become a better band? It would only make sense you know.

Yes I see your points but being in a band myself the only thing that ever holds me back from doing something more like this or more like that is that I'm not capable of it as a writer. If I knew how to write anything I'd probably be more like old Bodom. Seeing as Bodom is capable of being old Bodom, I'd think they'd at least keep around some of the sound. Whenever bands "evolve" they always go the comptetely wrong way musically and do a more mainstream much much less technical and skillful route. If Bodom really evolved they'd be doing something more intricate like Wintersun.

If Bodom did it to get more fans or publicity that is selling out also. And as a musician I think that the easier the songs the more boring it is. Trashed, Lost & Stungout and In Your Face seem much less demanding in technical skill compared to Kissing the Shadows. I would think Alexi and Roope would thirst for a more technical route, instead of riffs, and lack of solos.

Being popular really has nothing to do with how good you are as a band, and in fact usually the worse of a band you are the more popular you are. Going by what you said, Ashlee Simpson is better than Bodom by 10 fold.

The song definately had a big metalcore influence. Listen to the intro. Count how many notes there are. Even a two year old could do it, because there is only 1 note. Metalcore also uses repeated palm mutes of one note like that, and they do it in the middle of the song especially, also known as a breakdown. The vocals also seem a bit metalcore. The scream is becoming less and less harsh. The whole mood of the song makes me think I'm listening to Bury Your Dead or something.

You don't have to become more technical to evolve, you just have to gain a new sound you like.

Why is going the route of a more popular route "the wrong way"? That's borderline elitism. I'd argue this but I already did in my above post.

It's the wrong way because they do it for money, or popularity, or whatever else it is. It's only the right way if it's for the music. Entirely possible, yes, but it seems like a lot of bands do this and believing them all sounds a bit regodammdiculous if you ask me.

That excuse again? People always use that even though it makes no sense.

Obviously Ashlee Simpson is more popular, she's on top of her genre. Whether you think the genre is BS or not doesn't matter.

If I were to look into the metal community and ask who most of their favorite bands were, I bet I'd get tons of Iron Maiden, Metallica, Pantera etc...Are those bands the worst of metal? No, they are simply great bands that became popular.

Edit:

Meh, I'm over it. You just think differently than I do (Hell, my name is Sliptallica, heh) and I just agree to disagree.

One thing though, we can't really judge if this song will put CoB into the mainstream until it is released. Maybe the Metalcore fans will agree with me.

What you said about the top of the metal genre may be true, but those are top bands of all time, not currently. Ashlee Simpson is not know as being a classic pop star like Michael Jackson for example, nor are Killswitch Engage known for being a classic metal band. What you said doesn't really apply because I am talking about current trends, not what metal has seen over the years.

Personnaly..I don't like it, the intro is just boring, its gets very repeptitive. There's a pitiful solo compared to what Alexi and Janne usually do, not much of a melody. Alrighty. My thoughts on the song. Bless Janne for adding the cool keyboards in at the intro; because if he didn't, the intro would've just plain sucked. The scream in the beginning, was cool. BUT. Here's where it gets ugly. The song wasn't impressive. It didn't make me go "my ****ing god! This is amazing!! I wish I could play like that!" like all their other songs have done. For Bodom, it was a bad song. But, you guys know what the deal is, the single is always the worst song on the album. Alexi said there wasn't going to be a HateCrew Deathroll part two, and I believe him. Though, this song isn't showing that.

Janne: I don't even know what the single song is going to be called!!
Alexi: In your face!
Janne: In my mother****ing face?

Lifeless it a good way to describe it. Yeah, I tried to get into it, I listened to it until I realized there was nothing to listen for. The solo sounds forced, or just carelessly thrown in for the sake of having a solo. It fits in well with the song because it's just as lifeless as the rest of it. It's like it was just put there to make fans of the older stuff happy, and that hasn't worked.

Meh, I'm with you. I like the song. It had cool riffing, **** good keyboards, an aggressive feel, and just shows a new style of the band. The atmosphere created by the guitar riffing and Janne I thought was excellent. Alexi's vocals are worse than ever, but I expected that. I'm a little disappointed that the song is hardly power metal - no insane guitar licks, the solos could've been better, and like I said, Alexi's vocals are a more aggressive and conventional scream.

Overall I like it a lot. Bodom is changing, and we just need to accept that. I think I'd rather have a band change their style over time like Bodom has instead of just re-releasing Follow the Reaper five more times. In the end, you have to understand that the band does what they want for themselves. They don't owe anything to the fans, they just give us new material and say take it or leave it. Expecting them to go back to the old style and do what they did for years is not only unrealistic, but also stupid.

I know they're also stopping in Quebec, but I have yet to hear anything about Toronto. Keep your fingers crossed.

I'm glad to see acceptance to that new song.

I don't hear a shred of metalcore in it though, just a new direction.

Edit:

I don't see a point in saying "I favor old blah blah" because I like them both. What's the point? This song IMO is good enough to merit a "Hell yeah! Can't wait until the new album!" There isn't any shame to hide.

Agreed with you three dudes up there. Bodom is changing, and us hardcore fans have to accept it.

Yeah, and it's a good change, I think. I mean, I love the older stuff, but I love the newer songs just as much as I do, say "Silent Night Bodom Night" or "Wrath Within". Bodom is Bodom, they're always great.

I recently started listening to them, I like Trashed, Lost, and Strungout the most, the flange intro is sick. I also like how he sings on key but still growls in the chorus. My other favorite song of theirs is Better off Dead. I like Children of Bodom because they use a different catchy melody with guitar and keyboard in each song, and Alexi ****in' rips on guitar too.

I'm listening to In Your Face again. I think the part that bothers me most is the bridge that is those 4 quarter note powerchords. It sounds really stupidly heavy, it reminds me a lot of metalcore with the unneccessarily heavy progression. The breakdowns before the chorus remind me of metalcore a lot too. The chorus is ok, but the keyboard there and the intro kind of sounds industrial. The keyboard on HCDR was at least powermetal, but it seems to have become more industrial now. I don't mind the keyboard solo that much, but the guitar solo is no good. The riff after the solos isn't too bad. I stil have trouble enjoying the song overall because I hate way more parts than I like. The vocals especially bother me, they have a big metalcore vibe.

When I say metalcore people yell at me but I mean that in a very literal sense. Everything in this song that I call metalcore I mean it has a big hardcore punk influence. Like it or not, all NWOAHM does, thus I call it all metalcore.

I disagree, SP. I don't think it's metalcore. It's clearly still Bodom, in my opinion. The keyboards, the guitar runs and the harmonization during the chorus of the guitar and keyboards. Not to mention Jaska does a great job. The only thing I disliked slightly about the song was the vocals.

IheartSP
08-04-2005, 07:43 PM
The keyboards had some Bodom sound but clearly were different than before, it never had an industrial vibe. I wouldn't expect Jaska to change anything, it'd be odd for the drummer to play differently, he usually just sticks to the double bass. I still don't see how you can deny the metalcore sound, not 1 person has agreed with me on this but it sounds so clear to me. Even HCDR sounded slightly metalcore to me.

Do you think TLS sounds metalcore too?

 I hope not!

EDIT:

The intro sounds a bit metalcore. A lot of metalcore bands repeat 1 note like that.

Oy vay. Alright. I'm done talking about what genre Children of Bodom is. I still love em, and I support whatever they're doing. To each her own, I guess.

EDIT: Goodnight, guys.

I've never been anything but pro-melody, and the direction Bodom is going in is the exact opposite.

well then it might be just this song which is "metalcorish". if now TLS isn't at all as much as IYF. they're both on the new album.....

Well if all the songs on the album are like TLS then I think Alexi would be lying when he said this wasnt going to be another HCDR.

So far, not only does In Your Face not sound metalcore at all, but it also sounds nothing like HCDR. I think IYF is very melodic thanks to Janne. Hardly opposite of pro-melody.

I wouldn't call that song melodic at all. The keyboard is sorta, but not enough to call the song melodic, it's absolutely nothing melodically compared to something off of Hatebreeder. I looked at the song The Rose of Sharyn by Killswitch Engage and the intro to that reminds me a lot of IYF. I should watch Headbanger's Ball on saturday because I know I have heard stuff ont here that reminds me of this song.

The guitar is not at all similar to that of their older stuff. Alexi's actually trying to riff now instead of constantly shredding the licks and solos we love oh so much. But the keyboards haven't changed at all, and that's what makes the song still quite melodic.

I couldn't tell you if it sounds like Killswitch, since I don't like/listen to them. I wouldn't say IYF sounds like metalcore in general.

Judging by the one new song I've heard, I'd say it sounds great. Almost every other person here would say the opposite.

2 songs you mean, TL&S is on the album.

I'd say it sounds ok. If you like older Bodom and older powermetal this won't appeal to much to you, but if you are into HCDR Bodom and NWOAHM it'll be good.

*sniff* I'm listening to Bed of Razors and it makes me miss Bodom so much. I'm still gonna see a show so I can hear some old stuff. I'd be satisfied if they played 10 new songs and 1 old one even as long as I see Bodom.

Anyone following the Ultima thing I have good news and bad news. My band has finished 2 more songs as of today, the bad news is we still don't have any recordings and may not for over a month. If anyone is interested in seeing a gp of the 2 songs that were finished, I know some of you saw half of one of them, just tell me and I'll upload them.

Bodom's new song doesn't sound ANYTHING like Killswitch...where'd this comparison come from?

Judging from their 2 new songs, the new album is...different. They're going in a new direction, for better or for worse. Personally, I liked their older stuff, but knowing Bodom, they'll probably pull off what they're doing just as well. :)

I didnt see a Children of Bodom thread so i decided to make one myself. If you want to talk about this amazing band then this is the place to do it. Lets get the ball rolling.

What is your favorite Bodom song?

The single isn't out yet. A rip of In Your Face has leaked onto the internet and most of us have heard it. The Britney Spears cover is still unknown.

Just listened to IYF, not quite sure what to think yet. Whoever said it sounds metalcorish, I'd be lying if I didn't agree with you somewhat. It definitely has a bit of that vibe. Also, the industrial elements were certainly there, as predicted. Not a bad tune at all, but certainly is another new sound for them.
