Ok, I downloaded a The Who video that said "My Generation (live at Ed Sullivan show)".... and John Entwistle was using a BEATIFUL bass...

So I started doing a little research.... turns out, The Who never appeared on the Ed Sullivan show, and I can't find any info from it, although I think it is a Gretsch 6070 Hollow Body bass...

For more info, the show starts with the host(I have no idea who he is) talking with pete...

"So what's your name?"
"Pete"
"Pete?, and where are you from Pete?"
"London"
"London? London where?"
"London, England"
(laughter)
"Hey where did you learned to play the guitar like that?"
"That was bowling"

Then he moves to John, which is awfully short compared to what he did to Pete, Roger and Keith...

so... any info on the bass?

It wasnt the Ed Sullivan show

It was the... Smotheres Brothers show

and I think that was a Gibson. He didnt play it much though. For a more Entwistle sound, you'd want a Fender P or J or a Thunderbird, through a 15" cab

the bass is a Gretcsh( I think it is spelled like that.) To be more presice one of theese babies( I think) http://www.gretschguitars.com/gear/index.php?product=G6073&cat1=&cat2=&q=&st=1
'
EDIT: Noticed that it is a different headstock

Edit2: Looks like a Fender Coronado

EDIT3: It isn't a Fender Coronado, I am ****ing idiot.

I also didn't thought it was Gretcsh, because of the headstock (which is fenderish).

I also thought it was a Gibson (like a EB-2) but I can't find anything from the Gibson family on that bass.

**** that John :'( Why did he played such beatiful basses and kept their names so **** hidden.

It was none of the basses that you have said. its a very rare and underated bass called the vox phantom (i think thats the name i cant 100% remember) it has a built in distortion circuit. its a large hollowbody , john covered the logo on the headstock. Im 100% sure thats the bass as the interview you are talking about is on the kids arent alright dvd. i hope this info helps, this bass was featured in a reasent issue of bass player magazine.

It was indeed the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, not sure why it's been labelled Ed Sullivan on all the p2p networks. Great video though... Got to love the ending.

Anorak... thank you a lot... but I can't find any pictures from it =S. All I find are these vox's

Both on Basses and Guitars. Although the headstock is the same....

Guess I'll have to keep on searching.

That is quite pretty... but it's not it. The one was using had a different headstock, and a different tailpiece.

Maybe it was a Guild Starfire?

It was similar to the one in the image, but with the tuning heads all on the top side of the head. The company logo had been taped over, as had the logo on Townshend's guitar. Must have been some broadcasting regulation that's since been repealed.

When I saw this thread on the first page, I couldn't recognize it. I thought "Was I that drunk yesterday that I forgot what I did?"

Thanks for the information anyways =) That's the best pic of that bass that I have seen so far.

OK,I realize this post is old but you guys just made my night. It is indeed a '67 Vox Sidewinder 4 V272. How do I know? Bought one from a pawn shop in Denton Texas for my ex.Lucky for me I got it in the divorce.Took me quite a while to i.d it as it is rare. Mine has the tobacco sunburst finish like Townsand's guitar, but in all other aspects is exactly like Entwistle's. I had no clue he played one,I'd kill for a 6 string version. That on board distortion is one of the nastiest things you'll ever hear.

the Ox played alot of custom instruments, so even if it is from a run of the mill brand like Gibson the chances are it is either going to be a custom job or a very rare model
