The bigger a band gets that does come increasingly difficult. And to be honest I'd feel a little stupid standing around for hours outside to catch a glimpse of a band, I love their music but I'm not that obsessed with them.

This is true, however, it is cool to talk to band members after shows, for instance I got to hang out with the guys from Watch them Die and 3 Inches of Blood in October :).

Same with Trivium. I talked with Matt and corey for an hour and a half in may and people were walikng past not even recognising them.
I went to see them again in september and i could hardly get near them because of all the screaming girls.
but luckily corey rememberd me and my freinds and I got backstage

Dude that is so cool
what were they like?
They were really really cool. The first time i met them we just talked about random **** for like an hour and a half. Just stuff like Metallica, matt was giving me tips on guitar ("USE YOUR PINKY GODDAMIT!!" ), how they were enjoying the UK etc... I know it sounds cliched but they were so down to earth and really freindly.
I also got paulo to talk to my (then) GF on the phone because she couldn't make it.
One of the nicest bands i've ever met.
The second time i could talk to them for that long obviously but we got to eat pizza with them backstage and drink some budweiser while talking Ozzfest and the whole Iron Maiden/Egg thing

Hmm, I never bothered listening to this band. But yesterday I heard Bat Country on the radio. I must say they have a great drummer and guitarist, but the vocals are kind of lame. They are pretty good though.

personally, i hated his metalcore screaming. it was too metalcore and i never liked american vocalists that scream like that. bands like atreyu and bleeding thru. now, their new stuff is great. the guitars are like power metal now, which is a huge plus. and i like the vocalist in many ways. plus the fact that their songs are still long, if not longer, prove something here.

Awesome, theres a few more songs from the Vans Warped tour that I hadn't seen yet on there.
EDIT:  how long does it take Johnny to sort out his bass strap on Darkness Surronding, no one seems to want to help him out.
and on Turn The Other Way, Zacky gets cut open, I think it might be from M Shadows swinging his mic and hitting him in the head  what an awesome show.

Actually...my friend is a guitarist...but recently began trying out the drums...and within about a week or two of playing was able to play that intro perfectly, and another friend of mine, who actually is a drummer, says it's one of the easiest things to play.

Same really. I assumed that it was a simple thing because I picked it up quite quickly but I don't know many other guitar players aside from my teacher and a couple of mates who just muck around with it.
One of the things I am proud to have picked up fast was using my pinky a lot. I find it really helps my technique, but my old teacher couldn't use his pinky at all. Oh the advantages of long fingers....

I really like Pinkly Smooth. The stuff on their myspace page www.myspace.com/pinklysmooth is very good. I would recommend those songs anyway.
It's completely different to A7X. Completely. It's quite wierd with keyboard samples and stuff. One of the songs Nostferatu's something-or-other reminded me of Carnival in Coal in some parts of the later half.

That's gonna be a awsome video! Was anyon else dissapointed in the Bat Country video?
Anyway...Last night my band had our first gig! We were the last band to play and there were about 60 kids there. We were going to open with crazy train...but thing went wrong
Our set list would have been
CT
one of our songs
another one of our songs
another one of our songs
Some Metallica
and unholy confessions...but the cops showed up...so we had to play UC first (we thought we would have no time to do it if we waited) so our list got mixed up...but everyone loved us. My lead guitar player got this hot chick
I got 3 phone numbers (I'll never use them) but that's cool...of course everyone loved the drummer and we are still looking for a Bass player and a
permanent singer. I had to sing last night and it actually had a pretty good sound to it.

Well done Britton. I played Unholy Confessions live, but unfortunately I suck at the screaming bits. Should've done what M Shadows does.
Oh well I wasn't actually singing for my own band anway so meh (hence why I was asked to sing that song, I wouldn't have tried it in my own band partly because we don't do many covers but mainly cause I'm bad at the screaming stuff and stick to backing vocals and lead guitar).
Drunken Viking

Actualy the lyrics are about Shadows friends experiences at war, but same thing. I love CoE, dualing acoustic guitars, and 2 min solos, but the singing does somewhat get on my nerves at times.

but the singing does somewhat get on my nerves at times.
I think the whole band fits together all too well. I don't think any other voice could fit in his place. But at the same time, I don't think any voice chould be replaced for Children of Bodom, and I know a lot of people that can't stand that voice. I guess I've just grown acoustomed to that.
Drunken Viking
12-26-2005, 01:39 AM
I think that the singing does fit amazingly well into the music, but the voice get on my nerves like in Strength Of The World, at the chorus, Ihate the naislyness of his voice. But I think he is greatly talented.
So has anyone seen them live on their new tour. When I saw them they were great, they really got me into more of their songs, like Second Heartbeat, Strength Of the World, MIA, and The Wicked End.

You should check thier website www.avengedsevenfold.com , but they may have already come by your town, they are on the last leg of a huge tour. But I'm sure they will tour again, I mean with the sucess of Bat Country they can't afford not to.

Mine is Strength of the World, I love how it goes from the orchestra and acoustics to the main heavy riff.

I love the riff in Eternal Rest right before the "Dark in their hearts" bit.
Darkness Surrounding has some killer riffs, and I love the slow riff in the middle of Turn the Other Way.

I've been trying to get into this band lately, I've had city of evil for awhile now but I can't get into it. The singer really gets to me, he sounds like he's trying to be metal but he comes off as a whiney Emo singer. The riffs and such are pretty generic too, it's all been done before. My conclusion of this band is that it does nothing for me, and they are quite boring.

Id like to add my opinion to the topic of Alexi Laiho of COB vs. Synyster Gates of Avenged Sevenfold that I have been hearing so much about. Let me start by saying that what I heard about Synyster replying to a question of Laiho's skill with "I smell fag breath" is incredibly immature, it took away all my respect for the guitarist as a person.
Second I respect both their styles and I love both the bands. Yet when it comes down to technique, arppegio and scale choices, i have to admit the Alexi is superior. I know every solo on Walking the Fallen and City of Evil, as well as numerous solos from COB on all their albums. Coming from the opinion of a 7 year metal guitar player, Alexi defeniatly comes out on top. I struggle so much more when I learn Laiho's solos, yet i learn Gates at most in 30 mins, but I still love both the bands.

Gates is a solid guitarist but as said above... Highly immature... Consider a7x wore eye liner and painted their nails last time I checked...
Alexi is a far superior guitarist... His solo's and lead riffs have a extensive amount more of substance to them...
Alexi also shows much more originality in his music.. I'm trying not to repeat everything said above...
CoB's rymthm guitar work took alot more effort and focus to get right... Then any lead riff from Gates...

All the hXc ninja boys compare the two so often because Gates can solo decently unlike any other metalcore/metal/w/e the hell a7x is now...
Alexi is the best guitarist right now in music... (Herman Li is close but so much of what he plays is just fast.... not always the most substance)

Most likely because Alexi paints his nails black.
I just pointed out... a7x paints their nails black and wears eyeliner,
hypocritical.... shall we say...
Alexi's lyrics while not the best, pwn a7x's lame attempts to be hXc...
The death by reaper style lyrics are related to Lake Bodom...
CoB is named after the triple killing june 4 1960 at Lake Bodom...

The fact of the matter is CoB and A7X however similar are also very different.
They both appeal to two different kinds of fans. CoB generally to the more established metal head while A7X appeal more to people our age (14,15,16,17,18 etc...)
It's pointless debating who's the better guitarist because A)everyone has different opinions B)There are alot of guitarists better than both of them and C)There are alot of guitarists worse than them.
I happen to like CoB even though A7X are my favourite band. However I don't care for Alexi much as a person as i often find him to be extremely arrogant and annoying,
For me that's where CoB fall down. Sure they know they're good but they don't have to constantly tell everyone else. I mean when i've seen them live he's (Alexi) gone off on five minute rants about how his band are the greatest on the planet and the saviours of music etc... and to me that's just totally unesseceary. Wheras when i saw A7X they only spent time thanking the crowd and saying how much it meant to them.
There's also the fact that both bands have just signed to major labels so no doubt they'll be fanning the flames for extra publicity.

I agree completely.
I am a huge fan of both bands, and I honestly don't care who is the better guitarist, as long as the music sounds good (and John Petrucci owns them both anyway).
Its pointless arguing about who's the better band, but I do have to say about their current form:
Are You Dead Yet? - by far the worst CoB album
City of Evil - arguably the best A7x album.

OMG I hate you! lol
On the subject of who's better I would have to say that that's a subjective question. And I'm not really the right person to tell you who's better I prefer Alexi. I think he's a much better player but I'm not gonna argue with someone who this Syn is better. I would say COB isn't for everyone they are for the more Established metal fans. Where as A7X is for everyone from 13 year old girls to 50 year old dads who come in and pla on theri sons records.
of course, petrucci is far better than both of this guys. and synyster said the fag breath thing probably because alexi looks like avril lagivne, but hmm, whatever, both bands are great.

You competely missed my point.
Gates said in reference to Alexi, "I smell fag breath"
Most likely because Alexi paints his nails black.
I just pointed out... a7x paints their nails black and wears eyeliner,
hypocritical.... shall we say...
Alexi's lyrics while not the best, pwn a7x's lame attempts to be hXc...
The death by reaper style lyrics are related to Lake Bodom...
CoB is named after the triple killing june 4 1960 at Lake Bodom...

First off, Gates would have only said that to stir a bit of ****. Even if he meant it, how do you know he said that because Alexi wears eyeliner and nail polish? Me thinks you are just assuming.
You obviously havent taken notice of the lyrics from COE then if you think are attempting to be hardcore.

I don't think gates was serious about calling him fag. And also, you say A7X's lyrics are lame then you say that their are no such things as right or wrong lyrics. And so what if they are named after a kilingor they talk about a lake, I still think the lyrics suck ***, but I find A7X's to not by cliche or bad.

Name three who are more skilled?
Herman Li is great but his solos many times are just pure speed... not as much substance...
I forgot his name but the guy in Dream Theater... is not that great...
Okay. here are three guitaists who **** all over Alexi Laiho from a great fukken height:-
John Petrucci(he may not be "that great" but he's a damn sight better than Alexi whichever way you look at it. If he's not great then Alexi is ****ing mediocre.)
Jason Becker (say no more)
Daniel Gildenlow (Pain of Salvation singer/guitarist)
You are contradicting yourself anyway, because you say Laiho is more skilled than Li, yet his guitar solos are just fast. I think that a fast solo isn't necessarily a good solo, but I could easily name more talented guitarists than Alexi. The fact that Herman and Sam play fast is because they are incredibly skilled guitarists. Moreso than Alexi ****ing Laiho.

Seeming i rejuvinated this argument, let me point things in the right direction, this is about Alexi Laiho's and Synyster's guitar styles and techniques and which is superior, not their band, not their albums, and not the guy from Dream Theatre. Now, what I really want to point out is that bottom line Sysnster attacked Laiho with the comment, he wasnt provoked or taunted, he was just plain rude and obnoxious, and no matter if your the most talented shredder on the planet, you have to bring a good attitude with you guitar. Alexi has yet to respond to Synyster and is probably laughing at him, because I bet Gates smells a rival and wants to destroy him before COB makes it big in the States. If for some reason the more mainstream population suddenly turns to COB, as they had to Avenged, and they become a success, a comparison of Sysnster and Laiho will be inevitable, and I think Gates is scared of the result. Thank you for you responses guys.

Alexi is a far more skilled guitarist then the idiot from Dream Theater... Petrucci writes very bland and boring guitar riffs/solo's...
To a post above...
City of Evil is a disaster...
I'm liking it less and less.
I still like Waking the Fallen though... I always enjoy playing Unholy Confessions... <3 that main riff...
People say Alexi can't sing..................
Lets talk about Shadows... I can't imagine him getting vocal lessons from Axle's voice teacher.... He sounds like a dying animal, many times on City Of Evil.
Sieze the Day is painful to listen to... The vocals just make me want to cut my ears off with a rusty razor...
I'm going to stop discussing Alexi VS Gates...
It's clear Alexi is a far more skilled musician... The issue is more...
Comparing Alexi to other metal guitarists...
Alexi owns petrucci by a mile...
I listened to some Steve Vai today...
Pretty sweet stuff.
I'll shift my comments towards a7x and only a7x now...
The only songs that really grab me off City Of Evil are,
Beast and the harlot
Burn it Down
MIA

Waking the Fallen I like the whole album...

Still opinion, but I will argue for Shadows mainly because I think he is an excellent vocalist and a genuine good person. He sounds great on City of Evil, that album was released mere months after having major surgery on his throat. And I think it is quite clear that he does have a trained voice, I can't think of that many young 20 year olds who have a voice like that, he has great harmonies and considering his normal talking voice I'd say that his high pitch vocals are a pretty big stretch. While yes sometimes he does sound like he is a little rusty, he can still sing amazing, I'd like to see you try to do the vocals on MIA or Burn It Down, good luck.

Bat country is one of the worst songs I've ever heard....
Sidewinder is alright... Strength of the World, It has a excellent mood to it...
The way it starts out to the way it finishs... I think it's the song that shows the most musical skill out of all their songs... It shows the ability to compose something more then 3-5 minutes and have everything blend well.
(I'm not saying their other songs aren't well written/composed.)
Stength Of the World has the best vocals IMO on the album...

Haha, there are soo many things funny about your post.
I mentioned Metallica because of your avitar. Fact is, Metallica are actually very money hungry. Ever heard of the whole Napster inccident? Not to mention the fact that Black was a blatant stab at commercial success. Im not sure i need to mention St Anger also.
If anyone has ever been overrated it is Kirk Hammet. I suck *** at guitar and can play alot of his stuff. He is an extremely average guitarist who gets too much credit than he deserves. Any credit that Avenged Sevenfold get is actually very deserving. Mainly credit for COE though. Think about it. They had a huge fan base after WTF. All the kids loved their Metalcore/ Punk influences. They could have played on that for the rest of their careers, but they did'nt. They changed their style completly which was a huge risk, and have probably lost a rather large amount of fans over it. But they did what they wanted to do, and didnt listen to what the majority though.

the whole Napster thing was because they had gotten a song that was still in the studio being recorded on Napster. nothing to do with file sharing. Kirk Hammett doesn't show what he can do on the albums. go to a live show and watch him solo when he gets his 15 minutes. I doubt you know how to counterpoint which he does and shows off in his solos. those A7X fags get more then they deserve. I was playing Zakk Wylde's Suffering Overdue solo and someone said "that was ok but if you could play a A7X solo then you would be good" Also Metallica isn't money hungry because they still wear Wal-Mart cloths. also Metallica shows versatility because all of there album are completely different types of metal and blues-rock. they show tons more versatility in music then 90% of most band and artist so stfu n00b before I pwn j00 again

Now, I read the posts saying that the guitarist from Avenged Sevenfold are better than the Dream Theater guitarist which just makes me laugh, because I don't know. After listening to Ocatvarium, and it's amazing solo, nothing Avenged Sevenfold has came close to sounding as amazing as that shredding greatness. Either way, Dream Theater guitarist> Guitarist from Avenged, but it's just opinion. In no way am I trying to bash Avenged, they have a great guitarist, but ...not compared to Dream Theater.

I don't know much about it, but the cd gets old after about the first 6 songs and then I just lose interest. The vocals, while not the worst I have heard *thinks of Coheed & Cambria* just make me cringe, I can't describe why, but ehhh.
The whole Metallica argument- That is rediculous reading. I remember being a huge Metallica fan for years, but it wasn't until I got into other Metal bands that I realised that Metallica brought nothing to the table to interest me. No matter how bad or boring I think they are now, they inspired me to pick up a guitar, which is what really counts. No other band has done that.

I remember being a huge Metallica fan for years, but it wasn't until I got into other Metal bands that I realised that Metallica brought nothing to the table to interest me. No matter how bad or boring I think they are now, they inspired me to pick up a guitar, which is what really counts. No other band has done that.
Yeah... I learned guitar by picking up some metallica songs.... First thing I ever learned was... Enter Sandman and Fade To Black...
BTW... I grew up in Sonoma County... Like a hour or little more away from Fort Bragg.

Thats cool, such a small boring town this is :( I have been to Sonoma County before though, can't remember when....
Either way, still listening to City of Evil at the moment, and there is NOTHING special about this cd at all. I don't understand why people bragged to me about it online before about it. Also, I don't hear any similar sounds to Metallica or Guns & Roses as people described to me they sounded like on this cd.
I guess I just have bad hearing :(

There seems to be some influence from (G&R and such)... Seize the Day to me seems like a total G&R knock off.
Where in Sonoma Country have you been?

As someone stated above... a7x completly abandoned their fan base... To pursue a whole new sound..
I think that their new album is the best they've ever made. The musicianship is awesome and M. Shadows vocals are amazing. The fact that their new album is in no way appealing to emo fans is probably why they have abandoned their fanbase. I mean I wouldn't want to be a metal band whose majority of fans are emo.
Children of Bodom's new album is completely different... It has none of the things thast made the band interesting anymore. Which sucks.
And please stop being a COB fanboy. Well, don't stop, just shut up about it.

When I am actually awake later, I have alot of posts related to Cob Fan****s to set straight.
I am extremely sick of CoB fan****s as much as Opeth ones now.
They circle jerk in the CoB thread on how Avenged Sevenfold suck, then proceed to carry arguements into this thread about the overrated Alexi. Yet they complain when any one interrupts the circle jerking in a response to their bashing. Nice, is all I must say here.
Also, lets not mention the fact that Alexi attacked John Petrucci unprovoked in a magazine article as well here people.
Oh, and Alexi is and never will be in a the league of the best guitarists. You know why? (Not to mention even if you dislike Petrucci's solos, he is on a different level then Alexi. Also Muhammed from Necrophagist is on another plane in the same league with Petrucci in skill for metal guitarists.)
Can we say : Jazz guitarists > metal guitarists

Meh, I really like that song, it's proably one of my favorites off of the STST album.
And to the CoB fanboy, you come in here talking about Alexi and CoB being better then A7X, but you tell the Metallica fanboy to go back to his thread and get mad at him, what's up with that.

Nah... I'm sticking to a7x now that we went back and forth on the alexi vs gates thing for a while...
Seize the Day is not a hit... That's for sure...
Well, Seize the Day is, most likely, going to be the next single after Beast and the Harlot.
I wish they would go with the Wicked End, MIA, or Strength of the World

I gotta say that A7X is not my taste. They seem to be an average-ish punk/hardcore band with very few metal influences. But that is just my opinion based off the very little A7X I've heard.

However, my friend hanging next to me likes them. But he's also into Slipknot

I still don't get why people seem to think that City of Evil is so much worse. I mean, I can understand that people might prefer the old style in Waking the Fallen or Sounding the Seventh Trumpet but to me City of Evil is brilliant. I love the vocals, the guitar and the drumming. Plus from what I've heard live I think M Shadows voice is definately improving with time.
I reckon it's just that Sevenfold are getting popular now.

I'm just gonna reply to some stuff I saw in here....
Okay between Metallica and A7X I would say A7X is more talanted. But I don't see where you get off talking about Metallica selling out cause they changed there style three times in 20 years when A7X has practically changed theri style
every album. And how the hell can you say they were selling out because they created St.Anger? that was your worst comment ever. And BLS you have some points working your way...then you turn around and so something gay. Now I love both of these bands and I'm glad you all are such fanboys but when you are debating about them against other bands you should probably take it more serius. And I wouldn't say Metallica and Napter was selling out. they where making their music and someone put it up online. and I don't be-grudge anyone who wants to make a profit off their craft even if they've already made a billion dollers. It's their music it's their right. I think of A7X's city of Evil as their Black album. and just about any song on that could be played a million times (like Bat country has been) and be a hit because of the air play. Really when it comes to it Hammett is a avrage guitarist and Ulrich is a avrage drummer. But where Tallica gets the upper hand is band leader and song writing. and really when it comes to it Syn isn't all that great either...come on her had his frickin Dad join the band for a song. Not this post isn't going anywhere and it's doing it in a hurry...so I'll end it

The only reason Syn's dad was their was to play the acoustic guitars and pedal steel.
But enough of this arguing onto CoE.

I think it will, especially as it's coming out in time for their UK tour (they only played a one off show before). If this goes well enough they'll have a lot of extra press coverage too. Plus, this tour is Kerrang sponsored which means the video for Beast and the Harlot will be played along with all the Green Day videos on Kerrang and MTV2.

Theres been a lot of stupid comments posted in this thread recently, but as for people bashing City of Evil, while it is a huge change and will not suit everyone, no one can accuse them of attempting to sell out and make commerical songs, as Metallica did with the black album. If anything the songs on CoE are their most progressive and technical yet.
And I urge people who don't like CoE yet too give it another chance. For the first few months I didn't think it was that great, now I think the whole album is incredible, especially Sidewinder and MIA.

The Kerrang TV channel and magazine have little to do with each other. Which is why Kerrang plays Eminem and 50 cent.

My God Metallica did not sell out. They simply changed thier stye and did something new.

Now we are in the St. Anger sounding era.
Stop bashing bands becuase they want to try something new and they happen to make money at it. What the hell does music have to do with money anyway?
I think The Beast and the Harlet will be a successfull single. Maybe not as muh as Bat country was but they should do fine. And I imagine they will make a lot of money from it and ten years down the road little punks will still be sitting at their PC fighting over things like "Bands selling out" and calling eachother fanboys. and saying stuff like "I smell fag breath"

They went from a successful thrash metal band who actually said themselves they would never sell out or make a music video, to making generic hard rock, abandoning their fans and attempting to achieve commerical success.

This isn't a period of a style of Metallica's music. All you've named is a live album and a covers album.
Now we are in the St. Anger sounding era.

They changed they style and made a lot of money in doing so. It wasn't even till ,aster of Puppets that the guys could afford down payments on houses. Then they had some success with And Justice for all. But that wasn't a Thrash album. The only real Thrash album they had was Kill E'm all. Okay so they were a thrash band for one year. Cliff said they would never make a music video. And they didn't...when Cliff did (RIP 20 years) the band died. Then they were Re-born. Yes they had some Thrashy songs on album but they weren't a thrash band.
It is too a period in their career.

Okay so maybe that one comment was out of line. Let me re-state it....
It is a very unique and unpredictable album (coming from the last two) but after listening to the first song you have the entire album listened too. but you can say the same thing for St.Anger it was very unpredictable and after Frantic they repeat the whole time But neverthe less let's put this behind us and move on (again)
