Dude, have you heard their first album? At first, I didn't even know it was them. They also played at vans warped tour and $hit. I am saying even thought the newest album sucks, at least it ain't "punkish" like the first album. Because i prefer anything else than punk.
No, I haven't heard their first album, I think that A7X are more punk on CoE then WtF, I think that the guitar sounds more punk.

you should listen to both WTF and COE really. both albums are really different. but overall, get WTF. its better IMO.
if you just want to download:
from WTF ---> I won't see you tonight part1 and part2, chapter four. actually, just download anything you can off there. all songs are just good IMO.
from COE ---> seize the day (ballad  ), thrashed and scattered, the wicked end and sidewinder. but then again, try to listen to every song.
Tillius
08-31-2005, 09:57 PM
For WTF...I would say the top three songs are I Won't See You Tonight pt.1, Chapter 4, and Clairvoyant Disease
For COE...I would say Sidewinder, The Wicked End, and MIA

Which is why I've always wondered why some people on the Amazon reviews etc are claiming A7X sold out with their new album. When I last looked their mish-mash of various metal types is far less 'mainstream' than a lot of the more popular metalcore bands.

hey im a sevenfold fan, although i cant really be bothered trawling through the thousand posts on this topic already! some people have said to me they dont like city of evil and that theyve sold out cus of the vocals, but i dont understand this point, surely like proper singing in a metal (not that you can really just pidgeon hole them in one metal genre) band is like not the norm, personally i really like city of evil, favourite part is midway through the wicked end with all the choral voices and stuff...epic! and you dont find many metalcore bands that'll suddenly break out into that!

Waking the fallen has more of an edge to it, but City of Evil has an altogether better sound, better riffs, better vocals (IMO), better ideas.
They just seem to be progressing, as they should be.
Anyone else think the intro riff to Betrayed is one of the best on the album?
It fits the song so well, and even has a little bit of the Dimebag vibe to it.
deathscreamingsheep
09-01-2005, 11:33 AM
That's because it's a tribute to Dimebag. I'm trying to write a cover version to it at the moment just as an exercise, does anyone know what the growling voice says, I can't make it out properly and it's not in the lyric sheet?

Blink 182 got old for me. Tom's voice just irritates me now, he sounds really whiney and dorky on my ears.
As for A7X, next time they come to the UK near me, i'm there!
Huber
09-02-2005, 08:50 AM
I just can't put down Blink 182 because the songs are so catchy and I know most of them from when I really really liked them. All the live criticism they get is hogwash, they aren't bad at all live.
The above statement is true though, Tom's voice is getting annoying to me, but I still like Mark's.
I think it's power metal, there's lots or double bass, long guitar solos, melodic singing, it just hits the list.
See, those are trends of Power Metal bands but aren't the factors that make a band power metal. I wouldn't go as far as to call it power metal.

Seriously, that song is so generic/crappy at certain points, I like it musically though.
I prefer stuff like I Won't See You Tonight Pt. II, or Lips of Deceit.
In all fairness, the riff is probably one of the most recognisable of the metal scene of this decade.

That's why I don't mind there look. They didn't change the style they obviously like when they started appealing to other audiences, changing it would be kinda shallow.
Actually when I saw them play live only two out of the five were wearing the usual black. But meh... I wasn't really bothered what they looked like.
Having seen them now in concert after C of Es release I can say that their old songs haven't really changed much. There isn't screaming, but his singing is deep and aggressive- so much so that a lot of the time you can't really tell much of a difference.
Best live song- Eternal Rest. I loved that big riff after the solo beginning part before the "Dark in Your Heart" section. That one was great. Also, MIA and Strength of the World were big surprises- MIA in particular was quite soulful, the volume was down slightly and the mix was difference (less pounding double bass drum)- but the effect was that I listened much more to the singing and guitar work which on that track was exemplary.

My friend explained this to me, but I don't know if he's right...
Triggers basically make all of your hits sound the same. They could be the lightest possible hits.
So, in theory, you could adjust your bassdrum pedal to a riduculously close amount, and basically jiggle your feet, and it makes it sound like a thunderous double bass riff.

It doesn't sound like it on the first two albums, but on City of Evil it does. You can tell if drums are triggered just by listening to it. Notice that the bass drum sounds exactly the same every hit, and he does alot of short bursts of notes. Listen to the little drum fill in "Blinded In Chains" and the drum solo in "Beast and the Harlot" that will give you an idea of what I'm talking about.

Anyway. To clear up live matters.
While he does not scream in the live performances of old tracks, M Shadows sings in a really gravelly and aggressive voice. It does work, trust me.
Eternal Rest, one cited in particular as being something that might not work with M Shadows voice was actually their best song live when I saw them.
(Flashback to the me and some other drunken yobs screeching "Dark, in your heart, you can feel it..." Ah that was a show and a half).
As for drum fills. He does do most of them himself.
The 5 minute shred thing by Synster was annoying, but maybe that's because shred doesn't impress me too much, I prefer something more musical. Still, it was a good display of talent.

I have no freakin' clue to why people are comparing Avenged Sevenfold's new material to GnR, it's absurd since they sound nothing alike.

Hmm. The one song I have heard, I Won't See You Tonight Pt. 2, is an overblown power ballad of the most early 90s variety. I didn't think there would be much of a link :-\
Shame Pt. 2 is actually a very brutal song.
I think your reffering to Pt.1, which is an awesome song.

Brutal bad or brutal heavy?
I guess that's the one I was thinking of. It's a pretty addictive song all right.

He doesn't scream, his singing is very aggressive though and in a lot of old songs it is actually pretty hard to tell the difference.

...he doesnt scream anymore, he just sounds similiar to when he screams...

Nope not a lot of screaming. the drums were almost absolutely the same
as the album. Syn had a great solo zakky did some stuff and they played
great..I got the **** beat outta me in the pit. It was alot of fun!
I plan on see the next sow too...but that might not be for another yar or two
being as though they are becoming pouler

Damn that sucks man!
Okay I know I've just recently became a AX7 fan...but I love them
I love the talent the attitude and all the great people who Listen to them.
as corny as this may seem I make a pledge to keep this thread running...
I don't like getting home from a show and not being able to find the thread
cause it's on the 10th page...
anyway at the show they played Unholy confssions chapter 4
The power went out a couple of times (pissd off the band)
but all in all it was a great show. Zakky had a great solo!
they finished it with Bat country. and everyone went crazy

My band are working on Unholy Confessions, and i'm singing it. Usually i play guitar (i'm a pretty good guitarist, none a7x's stuff is really hard for me, bar the ridiculous harmonised solo's on CoE), but to sing that song i have to put my guitar down. Its so hard to hit the notes :(
Britton
10-19-2005, 02:29 PM
Yea my band is gonna cover it for a battle of the bands.
It's really easy...but I don't have to sing with it

The drums aren't very easy, and the vocals are very hard.

Thank god I have a great drummer!
I can imagine the vocals being hard

I want to cover sidewinder. Do you reckon playing the last bit live just with clean electrics will be ok as i really don't want to have to switch guitars half way through the song.
Britton

I think it would be okay.
That's my favourite song of theirs

Avenged Sevenfold are fcuking awesome. WTF and COE are both amazing albums. Even though their verses and intros are mostly distorted power chords or palm muting (which sound cool anyway on a good amp) their solos definetly make up for it. Also M. Shadows is a great vocalist and i love the lyrics in every song.

I keep hearing all this power chord bashing..and I have
to say is there a alternative to PC's? cause I have no problem
with them
everyone uses them...

Nothing wrong with power chords at all.
Except it is nice to fit in other chords and such, if it is fitting to the music and such though.
And you can do alot with powerchords, so meh.
Britton

When you play metal and some one is singing
I think there is nothing wrong with letting them do their thing before
you solo
so powerchords rock
BoboTheRagingHobo
10-19-2005, 10:31 PM
Well, not only that...
You can make up plenty of weird rhythm patterns and time sigs and time sig changes and such to make quite a few possibilities with just power chords and maybe another guitarist doing lead/melodies/other chords to add more possibilities.
Makes things more interesting with a second guitarist doing alternate things, but it is not absolutely needed.

20, yeah I go out at weekends, but most of my friends are into the usual R&B crap so I usually end up going to crappy clubs :upset:
What do you do?

I'm 16 but i'm out every Friday. I generally start in the Orange Tree or The Phantom at about 9:30/10 then go to Newshouse, The Amber Rooms and then onto Echoes for rock night.
I go with my crackpot cousin, hes very eccentric.

I need to go to Echos on a Friday night at some point, is it any good in there?
I always just seem to end up at the Students Union, but I get so sick of that place.

Yeh, Echoes is great. Loads of underage kids though, more obvious than me. Im 6 foot 3, and i know one of the bouncers, hence why i have no trouble getting in, but there are usually at least 10 obviously underage guys in there, which is annoying.

And the music is indie pop type stuff in the main room, and metal in the white room. I always get Sevenfold played in the metal room.
