They will be writing/recording in early 2007, around February or March I'm guessing.

The version that Guitarizzle posted is great, and it has To End Rapture.

avenged sevenfold have improved ALOT imo. they were right in changing their style because it is so much better not than ever. city of evil is a great album with many excellent songs such as sidewinder, seize the day and strengh of the world. Shadows has a really cool voice and is much better than the screaming ****e he used to do.

He had a singing part every song, more then 60 percent of the entire album was clean singing, his voice was stronger then to.

IMO his singing on Waking The Falling was the best he's ever done. Even though he's taking an entirely different approach on City of Evil i still say he was better before.

That's pretty much how I feel too. The screaming stuff on Chapter Four and I Won't See YOu Tonight pt.2 is what drew me to them, since I love Alexi Liaho's vocals and they kinda sound similar to me.

his clean vocals definitely were stronger before the surgery, but im willing to sacrifice a little power in order to have 100% clean vocals on their future recordings. on another note i was looking through an old guitar world today and there is an article with syn and zacky from just before city of evil is released, and they said they really stepped up their guitar playing for this record, but on the next one they will be ready to all out shred. that got me very excited, and i thought all the guitar players in here would like that too. noone answered my question of when they will be recording their next album though? also why wont they come to canada!!!?

The way fold is used is meant to mean multiplied by 7.

x is often used to mean times or to multiply

I prefer The Wicked End to SOTW, It's a faster song, frantic; It slows down and gets epic, then speeds back up. Everything blends so well.

You guys are insane, Bat Country is one of the better songs on CoE, it's so catchy, and the leads are great. That solo is one of the best he's done. You guys make me laugh with your fear of a song being popular. Too metal for a song that's played on TRL, eh? :p

Other favourites of mine are Burn it Down, mostly for the over the top "WOAH-OH-OH-OOH!" and powermetal influenced speedy riffs.

Trashed and Scattered is brilliant, it's one of the heavier songs, I love his vocals on this one though. Very Guns n' Roses.

Seize the Day is cool for the ballad, a bit of a change, seeing as a lot of the songs are in a similar vein.

MIA is probably my favourite track on here, very Iron Maiden.

Oh, and out of those two over the top epic's, I prefer Strength of the World to The Wicked End. And despite what seems to be popular opinion, Sidewinder is a fairly below average song, with an awesome dual flamenco solo at the end, barely redeeming it.

I agree with that, Though I liked Radiant; especially the WHOAAAAAA's at the end.

Sidewinder isn't redneck; It has an old western theme, the life of a coldblooded viper. Now if Shadows sung about himself getting bit while drinking his Coors Lite and shooting raccoons, crying about how mexicans "took his job" then perhaps.

TemperamentalGoat
04-20-2006, 03:43 PM
City of Evil still gets plays from me. Strength of the World and The Wicked End are certainly epics worthy of mentioning in any metal fan's dictionary. M.I.A very very good.

I downloaded sidewinder and cut out the entire beginning up to the acoustic solo. That song sucks with the exception of the ending =\
Anyone feel as though the end of the album (Last 4-5 tracks) to be far superior to how it began? With the exception of the first track the next three blow. It finally picks up its legs on "Trashed and Scattered" with its absolutely blistering intro and ending part.

Also, Shadows' vocals are absolutely terrible. argh. The reason he pushes so hard to sing "rough edged" is probably because he wants to get as close to his old form of screaming as possible while retaining his current form of clean singing only. It didn't work, man, his voice is hoarse as hell and its grinding to listen to. There isn't a song that he didn't ruin to some degree, with the possible exception of "Trashed and Scattered" and "Beast and the Harlot".

To me:

BATH - Great intro.
BID - Great
BIC - Alright
BC - Alright
T&S - Great
STD - Alright.
Sidewinder - Great
TWE - Great
SOTW - Good
Betrayed - Good
MIA - Good

The album fluctuates, It has it's moments.
Yeah, I found myself listening to WTF more lately; Turning on specific tracks of COE in between. I finally listened to IWSYT PT.1, It's got me hooked.

TemperamentalGoat
04-20-2006, 04:11 PM
Summarizing my post

BATH - Awesome intro, loud and metal-ish.
BID - Boring
BIC - Generic
BC - Possibly their worst song? Oh well, it got them on TRL.
T&S - Heavy, headbangin', finally Matt's vocals don't blow
STD - Butchered by Shadows. Decent otherwise.
Sidewinder - Good for nothing but the closing solo. Bad vocals.
TWE - INSANE guitar soloing, very atmospheric bridge with an orchestra.
SOTW - Beautiful western intro, brings images to your head as you listen. Great solo, great close and great use of multiple instruments.
Betrayed - Catchy, though a weak point at the end.
MIA - Very good, more guitarwork, fantastic closing acoustic bit.

In my opinion, the reason most of you guys hate the last half is because you listened to the first half and the album started to repeat itself or sound the same. I just skip the first four songs and go from there... or start with The Wicked End. The quality gems and experimentation are clearly towards the end =\

Chapter Four is one of the best songs on WTF. The singing is some of Shadow's best, and the guitar harmonies are cool.

My favourite songs on WTF are:

And All Things Will End
Chapter 4
I won't see you tonight (Part I)
Remenissions
Clairvoyant Disease

Ever so roughly in that order, they're definately the standout tracks, anyway. They have the best mix of melody and harsh edge.

Edit: Oh, I missed out Unholy Confessions, that's up there too, being the single, the riff is actually damn cool, and the singing is very catchy.

Agreed, somewhat.

Unholy Confessions - Intro and Re-Intro part half way through
Chapter Four - All of it
Remenissions - All of it
Desecrate Through Reverance - The part at the end with the clean vocals
Eternal Rest - Solo at the beginning
I Won't See You Tonight Pt 1 - That little piano build up part in the middle.
(Or something like that)
Clairvoyant Disease - Guitar Solo

I like that song, the dual harmony is pretty cool in the pre-verse, along with the solo. I also don't see why everyone hates Radiant Eclipse, the chorus and outro are amazing, the intro isn't to bad but it does drag on.

I don't hate it by any means. But it's not up to standard of the other songs on that album. And the intro really does get annoying.

I like CoE over the previous albums, not because I "don't like harder music", but because it has kick-*** riffs, blazing dual-guitar harmonies, perfect drumming and decent vocal melodies (minus Shadow's raspy vocals however.. not so much a fan) reminiscient of power metal; which I'm sure we've all heard reviewers compare it to. Of course, to be honest, it literally sounds nothing like power metal :D

I think when they recorded this album, he hadn't trained his voice enough after having the surgery. When they play live, his voice sounds much stronger and fuller.

Most people who don't like Sidewinder probably haven't listened to it enough, so they haven't heard all the nuances in the song. I think the leads throughout the song are amazing, and it's one of his best vocal performances on the album.

I know that Justin Sane played bass on Sounding The Seventh Trumpet, although Dameon Ash is listed as a member of the band in the booklet. It's confusing. It's explained better in my review for STST on Sputnik.

As for their demo stuff, I don't know. I only have their full-lengths.

Beast and the Harlot
Burn it Down
Chapter Four
Unholy Confessions
Eternal Rest
Seize the Day (Zacky V. sang the intro, he did pretty good)
Blinded in Chains
Bat Country
Trashed and Scattered

They put on a great performance, Shadows has got to be one of the greatest frontmen alive, he had the crowd hipnotized. Coheed were there to, they were horrible. They did like a 20 minute "jam" that noone in the audience liked, and the keyboard was inaudible the entire time.

Here’s something that may breathe new life into this thread… Something for you guys to fight over.

I graduated high school in the late 80s, when heavy metal was a religion. KISS, Maiden, GnR, Ozzy, Motley Crue, WASP, Priest, Dio, Metallica, Yngwie, Tesla. I even liked the poppier stuff: Autograph, Poison, Winger, Firehouse. Ahhhh, those were the days. And then the friggin’ grunge movement killed all the fun. So for the past ten years or so, I haven’t found anything I liked. Just been listening to my (rather extensive) collection. And then I see Avenged Sevenfold. Holy crap!!! IS METAL BACK?!?! These guys are awesome!! The Rev is an INSANE drummer. Fantastic! And the guitar solo on Bat Country is one of the best I’ve heard. And it was just a preview to the incredible guitar work on CoE. I’ve listened to this CD like 30 times in a row. I can’t get enough!

I wanted knowledgeable opinions, so I came to the musicians. So tell me… What’s out there now that is like this? Not screaming. I like when Shadows “screams” on CoE. Just once in a while. That’s good stuff. But I don’t want every lyric screamed. And I figured they would tour with somebody like them, so I checked out the videos for Coheed and Cambria and I have one question… WHAT the **** was THAT?!?!?! lol – omg! They’re not bad. But wtf???? That monster of a man with the haystack hair and THAT VOICE!!! lmao. Wow. But I don’t want to hear singing about Hobbits as I think I read in here.

And what the hell is “emocore”?? I just want heavy metal. I want more of City of Evil. I want FUN music. Music that makes me drive fast. Music that makes me stop and bang my head. With searing guitars and head pounding drums. And I like image. I like theatrics. I like fire, and hot chicks, and make-up, and swagger.

And just out of curiosity, who’s the guitarist with the brains in this outfit? Zacky or Synyster? When Whitesnake had Vai, the other guitarist was just “the other guitarist.” Maiden? (Ok, bad example, cause everybody just kinda took a backseat to Steve Harris. Wow. NOT a standard bassist, was he.) Who plays the ending of Sidewinder? Who is that ripping it up at the end of MIA? Awesome stuff.

I could write a LOT more. But I think you get the idea. Is heavy metal back, and what is it’s name? Thanks for any help getting back into the metal scene. Start your arguing!

Drunken Viking
04-22-2006, 07:52 PM
Zacky and Synyster both play lead, they both do one half of all the harmonies. Synysters dad plays the ending of Sidewinder. And sadly their aren't to many other bands like them. Try the recomenation thread if you want better advice.

I love the right-handed/left-handed guitarist thing. Bet they look great playing live. Although I can't see how it can sound that great in person what with Shadows singing over himself on the CD so much.

Drunken Viking
04-22-2006, 08:44 PM
Not that I know of, just that all the members in Sevenfold really like them, and they have cited them as influences a lot.

It sounds pretty damn good in person actually, the guitar harmonies sound great and the drums and bass make up a sufficient rhythm section during them, and Shadows actually sounds great, Zacky and Synyster do most the harmonies with him.

TurnTheOtherWay

Damn. I just seeked out a video of Eternal Rest live after Shadows' surgery. The Rev is now my hero. I think Shadows should learn drums and switch roles with The Rev. That's a hell of a scream for a drummer! And I thought the band as a whole was abandoning screaming. What happened to that?

EDIT: yes, both Syn and Zacky are that good. Zacky's not your everyday rhythm guitarist. He can hold his own without another guitarist also, as he proved on STST.

Just watched the Unholy Confessions vid on Yahoo Music. Not THAT much screaming. But the guitar wasn't CLOSE to being as good as ANYthing they did on CoE. And just an aside here, guys... I know that in the grand scheme of music, this isn't important... But when I went to a Whitesnake or KISS or Motley Crue concert, the women there were enough to make your eyes bleed. We're talkin' models. The hottest women you've ever had the pleasure of seeing up close. As far as the eye could see. The Unholy Confessions vid? Ummmm, not so much. Yeah, shallow. Ok. But I'm just saying.

Checked out a Trivium vid too. That kind of screaming... Yeah... It all sounds the same. The music might be good, but I can't get past the vocals. I'm not saying I want their older stuff with NO vocals. (Although it's good without vocals if it's Vai, Satriani, or MacAlpine. Not repetitive when the guitar is the vocals.) I'm just saying from what I heard on WTF, the instruments were great, but his screaming was ruining it for me. HOWEVER, I went out and bought WTF today. Maybe it will grow on me. I hope so. I can't believe how MUCH A7X has grown musically from WTF. CoE is just so incredible. And listening to WTF just underscores how good they are now.

Also bought the newest Coheed and Cambria today. Cause I figured if they're touring together, there's gotta be some similarities in musical styles. It's ok, I guess. I like Welcome Home, The Suffering, and Ten Speed (where he screams at the end. ha ha) But I have one question...

What's the over/under on fights breaking out at this concert? Can I bet on this somewhere?? I'd also like to bet on the winner... Cause I can just see some C&C fan screaming "Hobbits RULE" and a A7X fan turning around and just kicking the living CRAP out of him!! Whose bright idea was it to put these two bands together? Isn't this a little like touring Britney with Pantera?? Ok, that's a little much, but you get my point?

About the genre thing, this is what I think of A7X, STST was metalcore, WTF was about half metalcore half regular metal, and CoE is hard to classify, it's progressive but borders on Power Metal, I've heard the phraise progressive power metal, but I don't know if that'd fit.

Mantronic

City Of Evil is just Heavy Metal! That's why I like it so damn much. That's why I'm here. I heard heay metal, and came sniffing around looking for more like it. (Now I find out it's so rare, you guys don't even know what to call it.) :)

It's just heavy metal. Just like Judas Priest was. And Maiden. And Ozzy. And Guns n Roses. Metallica. Motley Crue. WASP. And on and on. A little heavier than some. Not as heavy as some. But definitely Heavy Metal. No need to sub-classify it further. It ROCKS! 'Nuff said.

I actually liike genres, it helps me keep my music in order and if I'm recomending someone an artist, then I go into detail. Like instead of saying hey check out so and so they a great metal band, I could say check out so and so they are a really good Power Metal band. Thus being more descriptive and giving them a better idea of the artist.

ya theyre def just straight up metal. i wouldnt call it power metal because when i think of that i think of way less melody. its a little prog-ish, but not in the sense that the music is progressive but its easy to tell that certain members (the rev) were influenced by members of prog bands (mike portnoy). its almost like thrash mixed with NWOBHM mixed with a little GnR. that would be my best call. but as far as classification goes its pretty much just heavy metal. it really is rare to find a straight up hard rock/metal band as good and melodic as A7X is so they better keep at it.

So my buddy told me that A7X put on a great show last tuesday. I missed them but he said they look like they are ready to dominate the next decade of music. Which is good to hear.

I hope they join the Ozzfest tour (there have been rumors) that would mean I get to see them play ;)

Guys about Second Heartbeat, they played that on their last tour so they are mixing it up, the only thing that'll stay constant are the singles, they are trying to work in all the songs off of WTF and CoE.

Second Heartbeat is probably their best song, and is probably the most representative of their older sound except for the slow stuff like IWSYT part 1. Desecrate Through Reverence and Remenissions are amazing too, and required listening for people looking to get into Avenged.

Old songs I suggest:

off of Sounding The Seventh Trumpet:
Turn The Other Way
The Art Of Subconcious Illusion
Lips Of Deceit
We Come Out At Night
An Epic Of Time Wasted
Shattered By Broken Dreams
Thick And Thin

off of Waking The Fallen:
Unholy Confessions
Reminissions
Desecrate Through Reverence
Eternal Rest
Second Heartbeat
Radiant Eclipse
I Won't See You Tonight (both parts)
And All Things Will End

lol isn't that pretty much the full track lists for both albums?

I have StST, my friend let me borrow it. It's ok, not what I was expecting since I heard most stuff off WtF first and I think they advanced a lot! between those two.
Being in this thread has made me open up Bearshare, I'll get downloading.

My band covers way too many A7X tracks, like Chapter Four, Second Heartbeat, Burn It Down, Unholy Confessions and I think we're going to do Beast and The Harlot as well. I want to do one of the older numbers like "Lips Of Deceit", you can't go wrong with a killer intro and a dominant bassline.

My other band did chapter four at a party. All the party requests were like Reel Big Fish and Coldplay and stuff so we reckoned a good dose of metal would scare them.

It was our best recieved song.

Ok, so I've been saying all along that I don't like screaming. But I love CoE sooo much that I figure I'll give WTF a try. Forcing myself. I see the "making the video" videos. See the guys as people. Like them more. Keep listening to WTF... And all of a sudden, I'm really liking it! :)

So have I been hearing in here that STST is going to be ANOTHER step deeper into screaming?!?! Or is it just like WTF? If I had to FORCE myself to like WTF, (and now all of a sudden, I really DO like it), am I going to have to force STST down my throat? Or will it be an easier transition than CoE to WTF?

Yeah it is a step further down that route. STST has a big hardcore influence and is a lot different to WTF. I personally think its great, but I know theres quite a few A7X fans who don't like it.

Okay, STST is NOTHING like WTF.

I mean, he has his moments where he has some clean singing, but it's mainly him screaming even deeper than he does in WTF. If you had to try to like WTF because of the screaming, then it is doubtful that you will enjoy STST.

Ummm, definately not a City of Evil sound, but the guitarwork throughout both songs is masterful, especially the solos.

Umm, they're both kinda along the lines of Waking the Fallen era A7X, but much heavier, and more gutteral lower end vocals.
