Ok, alot of talk to there so I thought I would kick it off.
I have owned a Pork Pie throne for quite a while. It is GREAT. Very comfortable and the throne is about 2 years old and still looks BRAND new. I recently purchased a Roc-n-Soc throne and I think I may like it better than the Pork Pie. I bought the Spindle RnS as I am worried that the Nitro thrones piston will break eventually.
I ordered the optional back rest with the RnS and I must say I am very pleased with it. It is heavy duty, well made, and very comfortable with heavy duty hardware. The back rest is very adjustable as well. I think I am realllllly going to like the back rest.
The RnS is very comfortable and the material and construction of the throne seems to be very well made. The color of the throne (blue) and back rest match perfectly. The RnS has a dual latch mechanism to assure that the throne doesn't move when you set it to the height you want.
I have use the Gibraltar thrones in the past and don't like them. The metal piece that attaches the throne to the double braced pedestal is actually 2 seperate peices. Mine broke in the middle of a show one night and sent me tumbling backwards. Luckily I landed against a wall and it broke on this show and not the night before. The night before I was playing on a large stage and if I would have fallen there I would have fell about 25 feet onto concrete.
Long story short, when you buy a throne look at this transistion peice. Make sure it isnt a 2 part upright.
So, here it is! Lets discuss thrones!

Nice post man, this has needed done for a while. One point I would like to point out is people need to invest into a good throne, the more comfortable you are the more you will be able to concentrate and the longer you will be able to play. I would seriously suggest people planning on spending 100 to 200 bucks on a throne.

When the *** is happy everything else is happy! Guys only scroll down. I have a crude comment to make about the male anatomy, if your female just ignore the bottom part of my post as I don't want to offend anyone.
We talk about my Pork Pie having a ball shelf. If you look at the way they are designed there is a rise in the front of the seat and guess what sits on it hahahahaha.

Be sure to check those parts I mentioned. They are made of 2 seperate pieces of metal, kind of like circular tongue and groove. It is a very bad design in my opinion. Call Andy at Massmusic for the throne, he will cut ya a deal.

I never said I liked them, and yes, I know exactly what you are talking about. But...you had to be sitting pretty high for that to happen (the fall). Unless it just snapped?

05-19-2005, 08:07 PM
I still have this crap Westbury one I got with my first kit!
It's so horrible, the way you adjust the height is by putting a screw through one of the few terribly spaced out holes on the tube (which offer the worst heights you could ever want, very little choice too) and then having it rest out the sides of the tube to stop it from sliding all the way down. The design is so crappy, the top of the throne isn't even close to a snug fit, so it wobbles, the leather smells like grease, the leg brackets are weak as hell and to top it all off the cushyness is next to nothing.
I'm definately in the market for a new throne.

If your back is killing you look at the Roc-n-Soc with the backrest, it should help ya alot. Andy will cut you a good deal, he is usually always cheaper than most internet businesses.

I forgot to mention that when you actually try to adjust the height of the throne, theres a rediculous ammount of grease and oil on the nut and screw, why? I don't know! Why would you need grease there? So I always end up getting it all over my hands and then I have to wash them.

hmmm well, I do sweat, and on occasion it gets kinda smelly. When you play multiple shows night after night, load it up in an aluminum trailer and it sits in there all day then played on again the next night they do get stinky. I spray mine down with Fantastic, scrub it, then spray it with Febreze and let it dry.

I am currently on a Pearl Roadster throne, which I like. Its adjustable to wherever I want, stable, and fairly comfortable(Padded well, bycicle style, and has little holes to make it get less hot). But, eventually I am thinking about getting a rocandsoc with backrest, because they are just awesome.

I'm looking to buy a new throne, in the $100-$150ish range.. A few friends of mine recommended that I get the Pearl Roadster throne (and i'll make them let me go to their houses to try it out hehe). NICE Gibraltar "Prism" series throne. Gibraltar actually makes Roc'n'Soc, and these thrones are basically the round versions of the R'n'S. The don't come with backrests, but it's my favorite throne for under $100 (it was a STEAL at $75 brand new.) Wonderfully comfortable throne, very comfortable (sporting like six inches of padding.)

Well, I guess you wouldn't need a quality throne if you only played for 30 minutes to an hour a day. If your playing shows or on a kit for 20 hours plus a week I would suggest investing in a quality throne.

I had a decent throne that came with my Pearl Export set. Been using it for four years, and today I was working through the rudiments with my feet when the throne snapped clean in half (me being a lightweight 250LB highschool linebacker and all :D ). Slammed the back of my head into the wall and it hurt like hell, so I'm plannin on buying the most burly bad-*** incredible hulk of a throne ever seen before to ensure it never happens again. Any suggestions? I was kinda lookin at the Nitro from Roc-N-Soc...
SonorKen
06-02-2005, 09:41 PM
well, I have been playing extensively on the Roc-n-Soc and Pork Pie thrones alot recently. I will admit, the Pork Pie is better than the RnS in my opinion. The Pork Pie seems to breathe better than the RnS. I played a 5 hour show on my RnS a few nights ago and it sweat me to death. The back rest was really nice, I found myself all leaned back playin in the pocket.
The seat part of the Pork Pie is more comfortable as well. I like to tighten my throne down so the throne doesnt move. The RnS kept coming loose about every 5 minutes. All the pros go to the Pork Pie, the only thing I like about the RnS is the back rest.

Ive actually sat on the airlift a while back at GC. its ok it has about the same cushion as a pdp800 though. it basically just lifts easier and is a bit sturdier. if you can though try out that pdp 900 they are rather comfy. its about $100

It is a was of money. You can not take the top (seat) off the stand once it has been put on.
And why would you want a airlift stool anyway? Surely you would rather have a stool where you can set the hight to a given setting.

The only thing that bothers me with the air-lift is that it is not easily portable. Its basically a one piece design (not to mention gas-shock issues after a year or two). I would have gotten one, it is VERY comfortable, but I found solace in knowing I can tear down the regular 9100 with no effort at all. The seat is plenty comfortable!
Grab a 9100 and try it out. WAY more comfortable than the 5100. Bargain a deal for $110 and call it yours! Then again the Pork Pie are VERY nice too. I didn't care for the RnS, the one I demo-ed could not be taken apart.
