View Full Version : The reason why you left your band

Alright, for those of you that ever left band, what was the logical reason?
For me, iv'e been playing bass for a year in a band, in which the band is almost a 1 year old. We just recently played a show at my school and a few days after the show i heard that people talking trash about how our band sucked.
Iv'e noticed that my band isn't making much progress. I mean, we've been around for almost a year and we only play easy cover songs. We have a few of our own songs, but they suck like hell. My guitarist is consumed in his own egotism and think he's the Sh!t, but he really sucks at playing the guitar.
When i go to school, i get ridiculed everyday for making a fool of myself while on stage, and i watched the video of us performing and yes, we did suck hard.
I was wondering if i should quit? I can't stand the guitarist anymore cause he is very conceited and self centered. He ridicules the other members just to feel better about himself sometimes. And the top of all that, he really sucks!!! He's been playing guitar for 4 years and can't play a single solo.
So yeah, i wanna know if its a good idea to quit while I'm ahead, before i make an *** out of myselft at another show.
Oh yes, and don't forget to say the reason why you left your previous band.

Either be in a band you would never leave (which is what I have)
Or just don't be in a band at all :thumb:

Clash of opinions.
I wanted to play one style, they wanted to play another.
Luckly for me I found a new band, I only play rhythm guitar in it instead of lead, but I'm happy. We play music I like and I like the people in the band more. Also much more talanted too.

Yes.
And if you just noticed this after a year, then there's really something wrong. And if the main problem is the guitarist, kick him out of the band, talk to the other band members about the direction you should take, and if they don't agree, quit. You can't be a in a band where not everyone's 100% satisfied with the results.

Well, my bandmates liked to play The Trooper all day long. It wasn't that boring, because we had fun together and in a way a good chemistry, but since I was most of the time into rehearsing stuff like Deicide, Obituary, Mokoma and some old In Flames songs (from Lunar Strain, I mean) the whole thing just got out of hands. I was either kind of restless all the time due to my long hours at school or then I was playing some riff from Jotun when I was supposed to take the lead in The Trooper or Die With Your Boots On.
I don't have a thing against playing Iron Maiden (except the fact that it gets boring at some point), but because I was more into other stuff and I even seemed to be crossing the hands of my bandmates at the time, we decided I should go. There was no argue because they understood me very well. Now I'm playing pretty much death metal with my own band, although I haven't forgot the fact that it's important to play Paranoid or The Trooper sometimes.
Excuse my bad English.

I shall. Creative differences.
Well actually not, it was cause our bassist is a jackass who reckons rhythm guitar is a waste of time, doesnt think it's possible to play and sing and finally was an egoist.

My band just split last week after three years together. A few months ago we recruited these two female vocalists. At first they seemed great, but as time went on they got worse and worse. It got to the point where we were getting comments about how amazing our instrumentals were, but how horrible our vocals were. Now, we would have kicked them out of the band and been done with it, but the problem is we had a constant stream of shows coming in all over town, and we realistically couldn't remove them from the band without sacrificing a lot with them. Tensions grew high, fighting increased, and then a couple of weeks ago our slide guitarist quit. I decided last week that I'd had enough and packed up my drums and went home.
Our guitarist, bassist and I plan on starting a new project in a couple of weeks, but the old band is sunk.

Wait did you say the guitarist was playing for four years and can't play a single solo??
That weak man. :upset: I would leave.
Like others have said, kick the guitarist out and find a new one. Unless you don't like the other people either. In that case, just find a new one.
I'm having to kick my drummer out of my band at the moment. He's a decent drummer, but he always slacks off and instead of coming to practice he goes off with his girlfriend. We plan a practice, and instead of planning his other stuff around that, he ways "well, if nothing else comes up, then I'll come." And, usually other things come up. Lately, when he does show up to practice, he's unlively and downtrodden. He loves playing shows, but refuses to practice...
And, you know when a person can leave his instrument at someone else's house for over a month and not go insane, you're not dealing with a person with enough musical drive to be in a band. He's left his drums at my house for over a month. At first, it was just for a few days...and they're taking up space in my house and he obviously isn't passionate enough about his instrument to be in a band at all.

I left my band because the lead singer/guitarist and bassist were immature. I would have contributed so much to the style of music if they gave me more than just 3 chords. When I joined the drummer and I became really good friends, so we both decided to break off. Another major reason is that it wasn't my style of music, they wanted to play "grunge" and I listened to metal. Grunge is a lame/dead genre, no point in playing a grunge band.
To threadstarter: Leave the band if you're not happy with it. It's as simple as that. Don't stay in a band just to be in a band, because thats what I did and I wasn't happy at all. Good luck.
I left because my band never listened to anything I had to say. The drummer also had no sense of time and I honestly was the only one who knew anything about music. They were all pop punk fans and I was the only one who had a decent taste in music. All they wanted to do was sound completely like Green Day and I'm not into that kind of stuff.

Ouch, my arrogance detector just exploded. There's nothing wrong with pop-punk. You just picked the wrong people to play with is all. It happens.

To the threadstarter, if you're not happy in the band then leave. Music is about enjoying yourself. If you aren't, then don't play with them, find a new band.
I left my band because I moved 3000 miles away.

For about two weeks I was in a band and in that short period we had written 7 songs. I enjoyed all of them and I enjoyed playing with the guys in the band.
The thing I most enjoyed is when we let loose and jam to a few sets of chord progressions and we would jam it out for 20 minutes or so.
I didn't really like playing our set songs or set solos and such.
That is what they liked to do, rehearse our material and stay away from the free form jamming.
They also took it way to seriously and wanted to start playing shows right away, for me it was just a fun little thing to practice my improv skills.
So I told them I wanted to go in a different direction, kind of a bluesy Jam Band and if we didn't I didn't feel like playing anymore.
That was it, they didn't want to do that and we got really mad at eachother and I quit.
They told me they will never jam with me again, but withing a week I was over jamming again and we made up 3 songs in one night... It's insane how much we did in such a short time, and I totally enjoyed it.
But... they want to go in totally different direction than me so that's it, but we still jam once in a while. :)

Does anyone have a problem with their band members being devoted to the music and the idea of being in the band not just be somthing to pass the time but somthing serious? I'm starting a band and the guys I'm talking to just don't seem into it and I can't find anyone who seems as adrenaline packed to make the music and preform as I am.

And the kids that I'm talking to are all into this extremely heavy music, not to say that that music is terrible, but its just not my thing. I'm into classic and hard rock, such as led zeppelin, black sabbath, ozzy, and ac/dc. I want to make actual music that has meaning as opposed to just screaming, which attracts most possible band mates my age that I'm considering. This is all my opinion and I'm not trying to start a fight so nobody interpret this that way if you're into the heavy stuff.

I've never been in a band, but I quit band in school because the teacher didn't make music fun anymore.
He was more concerned in showing us footage of the God damn marching band than he did having us perform.
I took the class to play music, not watch some other band. I couldn't care less if they were fellow students or classmates. It was crap.

the first metal band i was in i got kicked out of because the singer turned all weird after our first show and went on this power trip and kicked me out. didnt really work out for him though because me and the other guitarist/best friend wrote all the songs, and he left after i got kicked out. Annnnd then we sat and progressed as musicians, jammed, wrote some music, and met some people for about two years and then started the band we're in now. This band is super dedicated to the music now. recording that first ep will do it to ya. we just set up a new practice room today and started writing two new songs, the good ol fashioned way, playing parts over and over till they're nailed shut. i love making music man, its so great.
ahhh
but yeah, become a good musician before you start a band. it helps. A LOT. and make sure the people you're starting the band with are good musicians before you start a band with them. also make sure you have the right equipment before you start a band.
it all makes starting a band that much easier.

i might leave me band because of difference in music taste... most of the members listen to emo metalcore stuff and my music taste is changing, The songs we cover are mostly suggested by the vocalist and guitarist and sometimes i feel kinda detached from the band.. they might kick me out i dont know.

With my doom metal band at the moment, our drummer is good but he hardly ever turns up to rehearsals.
I ain't leaving no band though, for once, this band is going quite well...apart from the drummer thing.
We're in the early stages though, only started this band a while back, we still need a bassist for live shows (on recordings, I've taken care of the bass parts, as well as guitars and vocals)

One of the bands I played in recently split up, mainly because the guitarist/vocalist was a prick, and our drummer wanted to be with his girlfriend rather than to come to band-practise.
The guy that was singing writes terrible lyrics, and sings like he has a dead bird in his throath, and he was always like: "omg guys, I have this idea for a song, lets go to the studio and spend all our money on my crap music".
So, me and the bassist quit, and the band then went to hell.

Every band practice was a reason for everyone to get drunk or high and we weren't progressing. Playing the same songs over and over for 2 years gets old even if you sound good and all the playing is tight...

I think the main thing is you have to have a LARGE slice of luck to get into a band that you actually love with people you can actually get along with aswell. I mean i am into Metal, the singer likes Indie and is totally hooked on Jim Morrison, rythm guitarist loves Oasis and bassist loves Iron Maiden but we've all been mates for years so we make it work plus i write all the music (thru no choice of my own) so they play what suits. I have no control over the vocals but Gaz does a good job and he is really melodic so i can cope.

Well we were doing great. We had released our third album, and believe it or not, this album sold an impressive ammount of copies. We were in the tour bus, discussing the future, when my main man James turns round and says,
"I have a vision. An album. We will release it fifteen years from now."
"Hmm?" says I.
"St Anger." he growled with pride.
That night, when everyone was asleep, I got up and punched the bus driver in the face. The bus crashed. I got my identical twin in the bus, killed him, and ran away into the night. They thought I died lawl :p.

I often find medium skill level bassists/guitarists more annoying as they've just started nailing the more complex stuff so they constantly say things like:
"OMGZ listen to this super funky-slap/shreddin' solo I can do" and complain whenever you don't fit both a 2 minute duelling guitar solo and a big bass funkiness line into each and every song.
And do all sorts of annoying things like start soloing while everyone is tuning up.

04-06-2006, 09:37 AM
Oh the usual reasons really.
I was a rock/metal player, the Drummer was strictly classic rock stuff like Zeppelin, the singer left eventually and we never got another one, the bassist only played punk, the rythm guitarist was a complete dick-hole.

i cant find any people who arent holed into one specific kind of music. They listen to one or two bands and become determined to learn every song by that artist. my bassist is obsessed with metallica, and my other guitarist (we take turns soloing) is obsessed with zakk wylde and dimebag darrell. my drummer is obsessed with neil pert, although he's not too bad about it.
And another thing, they won't play a song if they don't know the exact tabs note for note. Ever hear of jammin= wing it?

I left my first band because the singer and bassist were doing some acoustic stuff together and we kinda just went our seperate ways after our first couple of shows. We weren't any good anyways.
Then I started another band with a really good guitarist and this guy who could scream forever..and never get tired. We practiced a couple of times and got a song or two down, and even made a sloppy home recording, but I left that band to join my next band.
This band, the one I'm currently in and two others, is doing well. We're pretty popular around the area. Playing shows about 2 times a month, sometimes more. But right now we're having problems with our singer. He's got a big head, and a girlfriend who won't leave us the **** alone when we have things to do, and he's starting to be a dick when it comes to writing music. We wrote 9 original songs, and he's unhappy with a majority of them.
I'm also in 2 other bands. One is a band who has been around for a while, needed a drummer to fill in, and I ended up staying in. They're very well known around the area and I've been good friends with the members for a long time. We're low on activity though. Hopefully something will revitalize us soon.
And the 3rd one is a br00tal *** grindcore band. No probelms here. :)

We got back together yesterday, but mainly because of differences in what genre members wantedto play:
I wanted to do power metal
One guitarist wanted to do metalcore
Other guitarist wanted to do prog metal
Bassist wanted to do something more funky (he isn't in at all anymore)
Drummer wanted to do black metal
We've basically decided on melodic death metal as of yesterday :D.

Yeah, I still kinda want some more of a power metally twist, and I was talking to Kevin and Eddie yesterday (the guitarists) and they were totally down for it, the stuff we wrote yesterday is like a thrashier version of In Flames' Whoracle era stuff, but with more Black Dahlia Murder-esque vocals (I just can't stand staying monotonal).

I just feel naked up on stage without a guitar so I left after one show. They also wanted me to change my image. They wanted me to cut my hair and where preppy cloths on stage. I just thought that it would be in my best interest to leave.
Heh, I don't like doing anything but vocals anymore... I guess guitar, but I just love being free to move around with the mic, you know?

Another thing that annoys me is people who reckon jam sessions are a waste of time.

Anybody who says that is an idiot... if you try to write without jamming everything comes out waaay to formulated.
I left two bands because I didn't want to tour and liked the studio more.
I left another because I'd rather take things in a melodic direction and thus creative differences. Right now, I work with a variety of female vocalists on adult alternative/trip-hop music and I'm happy.

I left my band because of drug use, our singer started doing cocaine and he was forgetting words to the songs so I decided to leave.

Man... weird...
me and my guitar player write awesome songs after we get high.
also the first time he took aderrol (sp?) he wrote an awesome song.. he called me a few weeks ago really late and was like "dude, i took adderol for the first time earlier tonight... i'm ****in wide awake and i havent put my guitar down in hours" - he was speedin his balls off, and the song shows it.
maybe more guitar players should take adderol..

no dedication to the band (other members. not me) So I was like screw it. as good as you are (to the guitarist. he is pretty much a child prodigy lol.) I was like you really have no respect for the band. I'm out.

im in a melodic/death/punkish metal band at the moment... i play rythym guitar, and the songs are quite hard to play. Im fine for the moment and am so busy with school, and im starting to think longterm. If im this busy next year i'll quit so I dont hold anyone back. But we recorded many of our songs last week and they sounded GREAT so im not really in the mood to leave right now.

Well basically with my band what happened was it just started off as me and my two other friends who played guitar, and another friend who was drummer. Firstly, our drummer wasn't enthusiastic enough as he was in another band, so we both agree'd he had to go. And hence, our knew drummer came into existence;). But the problem was we still had 3 guitarists. And the third one (the one who came after me and my friend who started it off) didn't wanna play bass. And time moved on we got really into it, but we decided that we could definetly not have 3 guitarists. So horibly, we started having band practises without him and without telling him. We then got a proper bassist and scheduled our first gig. By now we couldn't take the guilt especially when he said "so when are we having another practise", so i did tell him, he said it didn't matter but you could tell he was hurt on the inside. I now hate myself forever as a result. however my band rocks my life and we're recording next week so that = pwnage.
