View Full Version : Canadians, Does the hockey strike bother you?

Fellow Canadian MXers,
Does the hockey strike bother you? Should we as a nation do something about it?!? This is our national sport people! I live in Toronto, and it occured to me that at this time, normally the city would be going leaf crazy. Now that the strike is still on, it doesnt seem to bother anyone.....
Do we as Canadians even care?!?
Also, Do you think the Stanley Cup should be awarded to the "Best hockey team in Canada" this year? The Stanley CUp is actually property of the citizens of Canada. Given to us by former Prime Minister Lord Stanley. When he gave the country this cup, he was quoted as saying "This cup will be awarded to the best hockey team in Canada, every year."
Two law students at the University of TO are suing the NHL b/c they believe since the cup is the property of the citizens of Canada, and not the NHL it should be awarded this year, despite the NHL being on strike. This would cause a huge upset to the NHL as currently the cup has only NHL teams on it.
Technically speaking according to the wishes of Lord Stanley, the cup must be awarded. Be it to the world cup winners, the CHL champions, ect.
Discuss.

Yes, I realise this SHOULD have gone in the Sports section, but its not just a matter of sports, its a matter of Canadian culture as whole, so I put it here thinking it might get a better response.

You seriously posted something in The Pit hoping for a better response?

I posted it here thinking I might get a better response from Canadians. I don't think that Americans realise how much a part of Canadian culture hockey and beer are. In broad terms, Canadians for the most part are affected adversly when something happens to our national sport, or our national beverage.
For example, Coors has merged with Molson, a company who's flagship beer was Molson Canadian. This fiscal year alone, since january Coors/Molson has lost over $50 billion in revenues from the Canadian market alone. They're losing thier core market shares because Canadain is now brewed buy an american company. Most Canadians have switched to Keiths, or smaller Canadian brewed beers. Canadians who used to drink Molson products now only drink them at bars b/c of the availibility issues.

Lord Stanely wasn't a prime minister...
Strike didn't bother me too much. I went to a lot of OHL and Q games, which turned out to be far more entertaining hockey than the NHL anyway.

My bad, he was a Govenor General.
If I'm not mistaken Lacrosse was invented by the native Canadians, hockey is considered to be the national sport, then we have curling, basketball, and baseball. All of which were invented by canadians.

I'm bothered. To an extant. It's still just a sport to me, as I dont watch sports much. But I thought hockey was awesome. Rather play it than watch it.

He's right. Look it up, it is our national sport.
And basketball was invented by a Canadian. It's weird cause we suck at it.
Onto the topic though. I think that we are affected by it. But what are we to do about it? We can't change anything really, and we have to get on with our lives. It muight affect us, but on the other hand it's just a game.

I think if we shifted our attention ot say Team Canada, or perhaps the CHL teams we'd be better off. I just don't want this stupid strike to destroy peoples interest in hockey!

If the up goes anywhere it should be to the winner of the Memorial Cup.

In all reality, that's how it should have been for the past 100 years.

I see what you mean, but it's also a huge thing to a lot of Americans, such as myself. It bothers me that guys can't be happy getting paid a lot of money for playing a sport rather than sitting behind a desk answering phones. It's pathetic how selfish a lot of the players are.
Yes it might be a bigger deal in Canada, but I miss hockey just as much as you guys do.

when you canadians say CHL what are yall talking about. in southern US CHL is the central hockey league which is minor hockey (its right under the AHL).

no the NHL lockout doesn't bother me.
Not at all.
Did for the first week or so, but I found myself completely not caring during the WJC/U18/WC. Football (soccer) has pretty much entirely replaced it. When the NHL decides to come back, I'll watch, but nowhere near with as much passion as I had before.

Canadian Hockey League. Its the biggest major-junior (amateur) hockey league in the world. Its made up of 3 leagues, the OHL (Ontario Hockey League), QMJHL (Quebec Major Junior Hockey League), and WHL (Western Hockey League). Those three leagues combine at the end of the season and play for the Memorial Cup, which is a big deal.
Every season, the CHL sends the most players to the NHL in the draft.
