We mentioned Necro. We mentioned JMT, and Louis Logic as well - talking about the Demigodz.

Prince Paul and Dan The Automator both kick my ***. Definitely.

Their song with Encore - from Executive Lounge (great ****ing group, if you're interested in them, I can send some stuff, it's laid back west coast underground stuff, rather obscure to some) - called Waterworld is amazing.

Yeah, it's a good album. When I first heard No Time To Play, I picked it up.

As for Afu Ra! I like his first album, he always had something about him. His second album wasn't up to scratch though. Also looked like a guy from Oz. Anyway, he was good on the JTD albums aswell.

As for me being corrected on the issue of Groups not playing their own instruments. I'm aware of that fully and also that Rap is a HUGE sampling industry. Do I have anything else to add? Oh yeahhhh, check out Blak Twang!

Well, I must agree to a certain extent. It was all fine until you said something about African culture being related to rap. You want REAL African culture? Listen to the Blues. The Blues came out in the 1930s and was based on field and sorrow songs used to convey their saddness as they slaved away for our Caucasion race. Rap is by far NOT African-American Culture. I need to strongly disagree with that, as I just did a research paper on Jazz and it stated the thesis above. THAT'S ALL!

Well, they're extremely well known in underground circles, sooo.

I like some early Necro, not much But it's quite enjoyable at times. Non-Phixion isn't bad, but msot of their stuff sounds the same and is rather tiring/generic. Not bad, though.

ive also noticed this, but i love the way they take beats from other well known songs and make their lyric magic on them.

Necro is out of his mind.

My Sweet Dreams is my favorite track from him.

Do you like Non-Phixion?

havent really had a chance to look too much for his stuff yet, as i went after gore tex first.

And black culture expresses itself with hip-hop. Hip-hop is the modern day black subculture. Rap - and other elements - is used by the people that live that culture to express themselves.

If you don't think that the Black Star album is the embodiment of a culture in music. I feel sorry for you.

Blues became jazz, jazz became beat poetry, beat poetry became rap.

Actually.

Blues became rythm and blues. Rythm and blues became reggeae. Reggae became rap.

DJ Kool Herc was a reggae DJ before he invented hip-hop.

Rapping was around in the early 1900s when black slaves protested by rapping their protest songs. Some country singers rapped, too. It was before beat poetry.

Robert Crumb

It certainly did. After all, Herc was spinning James Brown and other funk artists.

I would say there is a real coherent musical evolution when it comes to hip hop. That's the beauty of it.

i want to say this. im a black male from portsmouth, va - the hood, if you want to call it that. now, i listen to a little bit of the nu metal for when i do stuff like lift weights, i have an open mind. now what you people who make these broad generalizations about what you see on mtv and hear on the radio fail to realize is that you are just getting the tip of the iceberg.

alot of rap is just rock and roll from a different perspective. lil jon and the eastside boys for example, listen to it. its headbangers music, just from "our" point of view. from "our" culture. thats what we know, and its how we express ourselves.

dont forget about RAP BANDS like- the roots, who are POETS with thier OWN LIVE BAND...not just musical instruments on a computer. with rock artists recording in acoustic studios with all these man made variables, they might as well do it on the computer.....

and why not delve into other ventures like commercials, clothing lines, etc etc etc? Sean John is a $400 MILLION dollar business, it seems like perfect business sense to me. money is out there to be made, why not make it!?

this is a conversation which will never have an end in the near future, i just came by to let you allknow what was on my mind at this particular time.

Because DJ Kool Herc accidently left his reggae collection in Jamaica - no joke.

I was mainly talking about production technique here, considering that's what set hip-hop apart from other music early on.

Whats the difference between West side, East side, and Gangster Rap, anyway?

Iai
05-20-2005, 06:03 PM
West side is rap made on the West coast. East side is the opposite, obviously.

And from allmusic -

Gangsta rap developed in the late '80s. Evolving out of hardcore rap, gangsta rap had an edgy, noisy sound. Lyrically, it was just as abrasive, as the rappers spun profane, gritty tales about urban crime. Sometimes the lyrics were an accurate reflection of reality; other times, they were exaggerated comic book stories. Either way, it became the most commercially successful form of hip-hop in the late '80s and early '90s. In the process, gangsta rap caused considerable controversy, as conservative organizations tried to get the albums banned. Even when the activist groups forced certain bands off major labels, the groups continued to make their music uncensored.

The place it came from. Besides, most west coast rap has more of a p-funk influence to it. But, that all started with EPMD on the East, ironically.

Gangster rap is about gangster life, pretty much.

East Coast rap started out as pretty harmless stuff--Run-DMC, the Beasties, Biz Markie, etc. The king of East Coast was Russell Simmons and Def Jam. Then later on it moved into Gangsta Rap in the 90's with Biggie Smalls, Jay-Z, Nas, Wu-Tang Clan, DMX, etc.

West Coast rap came Straight Outta Compton (yuk yuk yuk)--it was far angrier and more abrasive (signature West Coast rap: NWA, Ice-T); West Coast rap evolved into G-Funk in the 90's with the creation of Death Row records and the release of Dr. Dre's The Chronic.

West Coast rap came from Compton but wasn't angry. It started in the early '80s by the likes of the Egyptian Lover and The World Class Wreckin' Cru. It was electro-funk, a techno'ish hip-hop for people to dance to. The first form of gangster rap came from the East, too. Schoolly D actually started it. But, the first true gangster rap song was 6 In The Mornin' by Ice-T. And both Ice-T and NWA had completely different sounds. NWA was A LOT more P-funk inluenced. And underground West coast stuff (Pharcyde, Alkaholiks, Blackalicious, Freestyle Fellowship, Souls Of Mischief) had much more in common with the jazzy hip-hop from the East, than the West Coast funk from the West.

And East Coast started with block parties. Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash And The Furious Five, Afrika Bambaata, etc. I'm surprised you didn't list Kurtis Blow. Run-DMC, Krs, Beasties, etc. Are more of a second wave, really. Also, Wu-Tang isn't gangster but hardcore rap.

Definately get 3 Feet High & Rising first. As well check out their most recent album, The Grind Date. Though it is certainly a departure from 3 Feet, it is nonetheless very impressive imo and kinda follows that path similar to Common, Talib Kweli, and Mos Def (if you're a fan of that).

And Eazy always was this great lyrical rapper, right? Give me a break. Snoop and Eazy both annoy me to death. Snoop never was a great rapper. He just made better music. Well, to most, and I can see their point. I can't stand that watered down "west coast G-funk" sound, though.

I like how you posted that two seconds after the thread was made. Nice educated post.

I've just been getting into rap lately. I've always liked some of it off and on over the past few years, but never really got into it, because I'm not a fan of most of the mainstream hiphop. These days I can't stop listening to it. Good reccomendations.

You know what....the first type of music I was into was all RAP! Mainstream rap that is. I was big into Snoop Dogg, 2pac, Dr Dre, Ice Cube, and all the other mtv stuff. I would listen to the local rap station on radio and record the music onto tapes. I even went out and bought cds....it all came crumbling down in my freshmen/soph year when I started to listen to rock and metal and now I bearly ever give rap a listen.

Now I want to say that Rap has it's talents just as any genre does. It's your opinion on whether you think it has a lot of talent or bearly any. I think a lot of work goes into the studio and how to create the right beats for the right lyrics. You can't just lay a beat with Fruityloops and make everyone listen to it. It takes more than a simple program. It takes mastering and producing just as other music genres do. Sometimes rap groups will actually play the instruments themselves and record guitar licks, bass lines, drums, etc.

Now imo, rap right now is horrible....I'm talking about MTV (c)rap. I also want to separate rap from hiphop because I think there's differences. A lot of the rap you hear about on mtv is all about money, girls, drugs, surviving the hood, etc. In hip hop it's more about writing good lyrics, making good rhymes, using the right words, metaphors, and a whole lot of poetry. It's not easy to write hiphop lyrics. I also think hiphop takes a more personal approach to songwriting and not just about money, girls, and drugs. This is all just my opinion though.
yea rap right now sucks, i heard a 50 cent song last week and he ryhmed bit with bit about 20 times in a row and thats just god awful

i have to say though, i do like public enemy and run d.m.c so im not here just to make fun of rap

And Eazy always was this great lyrical rapper, right? Give me a break. Snoop and Eazy both annoy me to death. Snoop never was a great rapper. He just made better music. Well, to most, and I can see their point. I can't stand that watered down "west coast G-funk" sound, though.

Eazy was a joke as a rapper. Good business man. But a terrible rapper. He didn't even want to rap in NWA at first because he knew he sucked.

Pah, I knew he didn't invent it. And that's just what they call him on his CD :upset: . Hey, but Eazy DID improve greatly between Eazy Duz It and It's On, seriously. I don't think he's the best rapper of all time, of course, I hold that to Rakim. But I still respect the man greatly, and if you're familiar with his whole catalogue and what he's done, you'll grow to aswell.

I didn't really like this essay-'thing' about rap. There's so much more to tell about the genre and stuff. There are WAAAAY better songs from Atmosphere to put up than Shoes (i.e. If I Was Santa Claus, The Woman With The Tatooed Hands, God Loves Ugly,...) if you ask me. But anyway, here are some songs I'd recommend:

Pete Rock & CL Smooth - T.R.O.Y. (They Reminisce Over You)
Common - I Used To Love H.E.R.
Black Star ft. Common - Respiration
Edo G & Da Bulldogs - Love Comes And Goes
DJ Shadow - Building Steam With A Grain Of Salt & Midnight In A Perfect World (these are instrumentals but they're great)
A Tribe Called Quest ft. Leaders Of The New School - Scenario (THE ultimate posse cut in my opinion)
The Roots - Do You Want More?!!!??! (the song, the album is a must as well)
GZA - B.I.B.L.E. (Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth)
Gang Starr ft. Inspectah Deck - Above The Clouds
...

:)

I've seen it a million times.

Somebody mentions rap, and about 20 comments follow with people saying how much they hate it, and how it isn't music. They claim that is just about money, killing, hoes, etc.

I can't really get angry with these people, for the sole reason that the radio is full of that bullshit. Someone will usually come along and say, "The underground has much better stuff." But without actually hearing some good rap, statements like that don't accomplish much.

So all I ask is that everyone gives rap an honest listen. If you like it, great, if not, then at least you have an educated opinion on it.

To understand rap, you need to know a little about the origin.

Rap is part of the hip hop culture, which also includes graffiti and break dancing. It came out of the South Bronx in the late seventies, stemming from funk and disco. It emerged as a form of self expression for the black and hispanic community in New York. Conditions in these neighberhoods were poor, and the way the people expressed this was through rap. Crews started to form, to give members identity, and this is deeply rooted in the hip hop culture.

I agree entirely with the thread starter.

Flip the coin around and fans of rap could pigeon-hole metal and say its all about slaying dragons or working for satan or whatever, castrating goats, slitting their wrists because of teenage angst and depression who all walk around in black with a pale complection on their faces. Or go on about prog bands sing about flowers and the trees and the earth.

However, fans of these genres know it isn't all like that. That's mainly what goes on in the mainstream. Its the same with rap. I don't judge metal by Slipknot or Limp Bizkit, so why should you judge the whole of the rap genre on someone like Chingy, Nelly or 50 Cent?

I notice a lot of people in rock also worry about the technicality of the instrumentalists and the fact they play instruments. A lot of rap groups are backed by jazz groups, which is arguably much more complicated than rock music.

Also who says a group of musicians must consist of guitar, bass, drums and maybe a keyboardist. Its formulas like these that annoy me the most, and rock fans reckoning they are more hardcore because they listen to rock. You're just the same lame trend follower just listening to rock and wearing the clothes to fit in with your peers and the same old cliches. It's a normal human thing to do to fit into groups which applies to all genres.

And while we are on the subject of rock, if it supposedly is more superior to this radio crap then why don't "average" listeners buy it and only the instrumentalists who apparently "understand" the quality of the music because they are technically proficient on their instruments? You can't blame record companies, MTV or radio either, the customer decides what they listen to. If people didn't like Eminem or Britney or whoever is hot at the moment then people wouldn't buy it, in turn MTV, record companies and record companies would start releasing more records that would suit the public more.

Rant over.

Ive heard some good rap songs, but 99% of all rap is just lame. I heard some song with this guy singing aobut how cool his 'ice' is...LAME.
Here is a small portion of lyrics from the previously mentioned song:

"I got so many rocks, on my chain and watch
I know I'm da ****, my chain hang down to my dick
I know I'm da bomb, just look at my charms
I know I'm da ****, my chain hang down to my dick"

This is just one example of bad rap lyrics, but these are pretty similar to every other rap song.

I used to be a huge fan of rap, mostly early stuff like Run-DMC (they got some pretty cool guitar parts...) and gangsta stuff like 2pac, ice cube, etc. I don't listen to it anymore though. I think i became obsessed with rock when i started playing guitar. I think people should listen to rap once in a while, as with every other kind of music. Rap has actually really helped me write songs and poetry, and it gives people a good feel for rythms and beats. i'd still pick rock over rap any day, though.

it so pisses me off when ppl are so eagerly prepared to generalise, stereotype and wildly make assumption.
i appreciate rap music for what it is though i listen to mostly metal/indie.
to throw wild percentages is lame..in whose opinion is 99% of rap lame? is that a fact? a correlated figure? i think not...and to say those lyrics are similar to pretty much every rap song is new to me...such wild assumptions cannot be backed.

Here we go. Rap in my opinion isnt very good. Thats my opinion but I wouldnt go as far as saying that the people who rap are untalented or that rap isnt music. Music is noise and you can make noise either with a machine or with your heart. Thats pretty much all I have to say on this subject.

Good music though. One of the UK's biggest artists I'd say.

if rap lyrics have some meaning instead of simply bragging about stuff i would listen to it, i think my all time favorite rap song is by 2 pac - changes, yeah its talking about being from the streets but it has a message behind it, not to mention good singing and rhythm

eminem however much i hate him, presents his songs without mindless rabble, and with a comedic twist as well, his songs are entertaining and have MEANING (or at least the songs ive heard)
not to sound racist but its funny how white rappers whose songs sound like the majority of other african american rappers (mtv crap) seem to fade rather quickly, while someone who stands out with their songs(eminem) stays and does better

mike shinoda and most(excluding j-z)of the people he associates with are good musicians who i would listen to, i for one liked linkin park's reanimation. i might even by his fort minor album, but LP's collabullation w/ jay-z was pathetic i used to love LP but after that i have lost a lot of faith because well j -z is one of the rappers who suck

but you cant argue with the fact that rap is fun to dance to
you cant get all up on a chick with meshuggah blasting (what will you do? headbang her?)

I listen to N.W.A and Public enemy their good, and N.W.A is so good the R.A.T.M has made a cover on **** the police.

Has tupac made a cover on the song Changes, I don't really listen to him, but I heard that he made a song like that.

As for another thing, I see Kids who call them selves "Rockers" and start beating on kids that like Rap, but I don't understand is that if you want people who like a different genre of music, why do you beat on them rather share your music with them. I bet some kids of different sides of the fense would like each others music.

This problem seems to have gotten so far out of hand, that its like the "Culture Wars" out there, R.A.T.M is right " THE FRONT LINE IS EVERYWHERE"

I like haveing a wide view on music its good to have knowledge of different music and it promotes healthy lifestyle,
