..or not. We've had countless threads like this in the past but I figured it's time for a new one. In here you suggest and/or ask for bands based on your preferences and people will (hopefully) try to help out as soon as they can.
Some rules you should follow:
-consult the band list, first and foremost
-don't barrage your post with 51543524626099 generic uber obscure bands that no-one will care about
-suggest only 5 bands max at a time, no need to name-drop
-include their sub-genre when you mention them
-put a brief description of the bands you're suggesting if possible, linkage to sites is helpful too
-yousendits have their own thread
-NO ADVERTISING
-it's ok to ask for bands in other genres, as long as it's permissible (no "if you liek FFAF chek out MCR" plz)
enjoy.

oh well, guess i'll use this thread instead.
im looking for bands which describe a kind of bitter sweet music. like "i love the world because its so beauitful and i love all my friends but it sucks because life is moving so quickly at the age of 18"
--------------
im going to recommend (although i guess lots of people know bout these already)
1) neutral milk hotel - lo fi folkish, lovely
2) the decemberists - kinda like nmh, but i think much more acessible than them
3) belle and sebastian - british popish mellow romanticised kinda music
4) super furry animals - happy rocky kinda experimental band
5) my bloody valentine - great 90's beautiful white noise band
kinda mixed bunch, but their my top 5 bands at the moment.
edit: i think we're suppose to ask for some bands, but nobody's asked anything yet plus i think you cant go wrong with the above few.

righto:
1. Amplifier (Post-rock) - Mega-riffs, heaviness and plain amazing. Alos, their singer sings with a quite a mellow voice so it makes the guitar, bass and drumwork sound ever mightier.
2. Muse (Neo-classical, operatic rock) - Probably already well known to most people but they are just a fantastic band. Riffage, piano, almost classical music at times with a great singer. Also, a brilliant live band.
3. The Secret Machines (Not sure) - A newish band that have never really broken into the mainstream. Their debut album is very good and is really worth a listen if you like long, structured rock songs.

I'd suggest Nebula, although they're more stoner rock. Still, good band.

65 DaysofStatic - A bit more bite than your usual post-rock band.
bah, I'll add a couple more.
dEUS - Alt/Indie rock, I really like them.
Orange Goblin - Stoner Rock, really great band who don't seem to have many fans.
Murder by Death - Alt/Indie rock?! I don't know what genre they are, maybe someone else can classify them, but they are good.

ya forgot neko case happy meal!
Neko Case - new alternative country, one of the loveliest voice i've heard (check blacklisted for a album)
elliot smith - "sad" music so to speak. heartfelt indie really melancholic but beautiful lyrics music. (XO's a good album)
Metric - Alternative dance pop/rock. in cahoots with BSS and folk.
Bandaid
05-06-2005, 10:22 PM
Fu Manchu - Another good band that would fit under the stoner label
dkmaddog
05-06-2005, 10:24 PM
Aveo - Smiths-esque alternative rock.
Travis Morrison - "poppy" effort from ex-Dismemberment Plan frontman. Really quirky synth pop.

Cave In - These guys over the years have changed alot. They used to be veryvery prog rock/alternative with massive guitar sounds, but they could also be very heavy with the odd screamo moments. However with their last album 'Antenna' they have gone for a more mainstream sound, almost pop-like in some songs.
Head Automatica - Current project from Caryl Palumbo, the singer from Glassjaw. However HA sound nothing like Glassjaw. HA are disco/pop/funk/all round good time music with beautiful vocals from the usual screamer.
The Cooper Temple Clause - Essentially a brit rock band, but a hell of alot more experimentation. With their set up including a keyboardist and a samplist aswell as your usual two guitars, bassist, drums and vocals, their music can go in all different directions, from your heavy brit rock to weird use of samples.
Do Me Bad Things - Anothe band that covers alot of ground with their music. The music underlying the vocals could be called metal but is basically very heavy rock most of the time with heavy guitar sounds, but the vocals ae a complete contrast. With 5 vocalists that rotate from being backing vocalists like a gospel choir almost from gruff main vocals from one of them sounding almost Lanegan-like, also a gal who can hit basically ANY note they have created a new sound and are very entertaining to listen to and amazing live.
Phunphone
05-07-2005, 09:12 AM
Nils Petter Molvaer - Really chill-out modern jazz. If you like that kind of stuff, the cd Khmer is definitely worth checking out. Nils Petter himself is plays trumpet, and layers atonal guitars and ambient effects on top of breakbeats, and solos over them. Brilliant.
Kayo Dot - A band that is impossible to put into one genre. A single song can sound like a grindcore song, a modern classical piece, and can have the dreamy post- rock atmosphere at different times. The band has 17 members in it, I believe, and out of mesh of instruments, comes out a really beaufiul, strange music.
PLAID - An English electronica duo. Their sound is almost disturbing... strange sounds and effects are all over the place. I find them to be brilliant, but it is also a hard listen. Their "Double Figure" album is highly recommended.
oh well, guess i'll use this thread instead.
im looking for bands which describe a kind of bitter sweet music. like "i love the world because its so beauitful and i love all my friends but it sucks because life is moving so quickly at the age of 18"
The Flaming Lips. "Do You Realize?" is basically that exact message. They do a lot of songs about life and what not. They did some noise pop but also did some alt. stuff.

I´ll recommend the j-rock band
Glay - Glay is a four member rock band that has been incredibly successful in Japan over the years! The group first started with Takuro and his friend Teru around 1988. The two later convinced Hisashi (from the band Ari) and Jiro (from Pierrot) to join as well! At first, the band started out with little success. To their great surprise though, Yoshiki from X Japan saw them in concert and hooked them up with a contract under his label, Extasy Records. Since then, Glay has been extremely successful. They are constantly selling out concerts and have been ranked high on the Oricon Charts several times. (taken from http://www.akfgfan.com/recartist/index_glay.htm )
They started out with less people in the audience than people on stage, and have now become one of the most popular bands in Japan (I think even in the Japanese history - not quite sure on that now). They play all kinds of music - rock, pop, alternative, now and then a little ska (on their forlast album The Frustrated), metal elements, you name it.

for the hiphop section add
Binary Star - indie hiphop, very much anti mainstream. I believe one of them released the album masters of the universe online for people to download after there label deal ended.
I can't find the exact site but you can stream a couple of tracks here. http://artists.iuma.com/IUMA/Bands/Binary_Star/
Another band called KMD should be added. I'd describe them as pure old school hiphop similar to the kind of music De La Soul were doing around the early 90's. If thats not enough to sell it MF Doom used to be in KMD.
elnicky
05-17-2005, 11:24 AM
Andrew Bird - Folk/Alternative music, nice voice and some great lyrics.
Patrick Wolf - Similar to Xiu Xiu but with an English accent, I guess would have to go in other.
Moldy Peaches - I don't think I've ever seen the Moldy Peaches mentioned in the Alt/Indie forums and I can't figure out for the life of me why. A very simple band with a lot of quirky lyrics on par with anything you'd hear from Pavement. Since I don't like the tag 'anti folk' I'd say they'd have to go in indie pop?

for the stoner rock category:

?
Corrosion of conformity (more of a metal band really)
It depends what era CoC you're thinking of. Their earlier stuff (albums like Technocracy was a crossover kind of metal-punk mix, really abrasive stuff. Later albums (not including the new one, which I haven't heard and so can't say much about; albums like Wiseblood) have bene slightly stoner-ish rock/metal stuff.
Electric Wizard don't see very Alt/Indie friendly :-/

1) Most of their stuff is punk, like Bartender said
2) Another reason is also why I don't need to put bands like Radiohead and Oasis in the list.

OK, my playlist of stuff now is starting to bore me ever-so-slightly so I need to find some new stuff in the same sort of mould. These are just a few of my very favourite artists:
Muse
Led Zeppelin
Radiohead
Amplifier
Hendrix
Yes
King Crimson
Deep Purple
Blur
Black Sabbath
To generalise, I like bands that can provide a good riff, good lyrics, that rock and have an element of progression within their music.
Any suggestions?

I would recomend
Ugly Casanova, which is Isaac Brock, but more folky than Modest Mouse stuff, really great cd "they only have the one (sharpen your teeth)"
and also
Stellastarr, I'm not sure what genre they are, kind of new age rock, I guess, probably not indie, but still a really great CD "I think they also have just the one (self titled)"

The Wrens
This is a great band that falls under the genre Alt/Indie Rock. They blend a bit rocky guitar play with emotional piano. They creates a happy yet "strong" sound .
I don't know if this is true but I somewhere heard that they were banned from a club after playing a cover of the Pixies' Debaser :D.
I recommend any songs from the album "The Meadowlands".
Great thread, by the way.

Murder City Devils -Dark, loud rock band. Very punky in approach and attitude but not exactly a "punk band". Kinda like a less sonically huge Hot Snakes, but with Organs. Kinda Misfits meets the Doors.

my only suggestion would be modest mouse, for those that may not have given them a listen yet (and, of course, I'm talking about their older stuff ('long drive...', 'lonesome crowded west', 'the moon and antarctica', etc))..
it's not very "easy" listening, though, because while most of the lyrics aren't very the deepest ever (though they're still brilliant, IMHO), the themes and and concepts ARE, and they really resonate if you share the same feelings.
a song that sums up isaac's sentiments most, I think, is 'tundra/desert', from their album 'this is a long drive for someone with nothing to think about'. if you find yourself agreeing with the lyrics, you'll love how he thinks and see things:
every sick, fickle f*cker
childhood is what makes ya
til they treat you like tundra
the weight of those opinions
more like air than lead
every planned occupation
surefire disappointment up ahead
til they treat ya like desert
see mirages of friendship
face turns read
ohhhhhh SH!T!!
here's the soon-to-be anchor
build bridges to nothing, you'll get nowhere
every governor's mother
knows their bread is buttered by Sam
and what about science?
they find the proof and let you make your own decisions
every childstar wonders
if they have a future up ahead
every kind-hearted banker
I don't think there is one!
every winning opinion
I wish I had one
stand on platforms in water
filling jars of silence, you'll get nowhere

Anywayz, I am compiling a mixtape for a boy I am dating for Christmas, and I'm having some trouble finding some songs that work around my theme that he hasn't already heard. The list so far:
Caribou - Pelican Narrows
Air - Alone in Kyoto
Efterklang - Prey and Predator
Alex Drosen - Untitled #6
Jaga Jazzist - Kitty Wu
Dirty Three - Hope
Explosions in the Sky - The Only Moment We Were Alone
Do Make Say Think - (undecided)
I would like the overall theme to be soft and innocent and pretty and sensual, but also intricate, whether it be guitar, synths, piano, whatevz. I would also sort of like intricate percussion aswell, but it's not necessary. Gracias.

For M83, Efterklang. They share alot in common with M83, and use lots of electronic futuristic blips with organic strings and they are amazing.
For BSS, I would check out Apostle of Hustle, Do Make Say Think, Feist, Metric, and Stars. The first four have members in BSS, and Stars are from Canada and are on the same label as Boken Social Scene, I believe.
The only real comparison to Animal Collective I can think of are Oh No! Oh My! (formerly known as the Jolly Rogers.) http://www.thejollyrogers.org, but you've probably already been subjected to their constant whoring. They are worth it though.

M83 and Efterklang both might suit your needs. They both are synth based and very beautiful and good at capturing emotions. Efterklang alternates between a male and female singer, and both of them are good, while M83 just has a boy singer and uses some dialogues, too. You really can't go wrong with either Efterklang release, and the same for M83, although Red Cities would be my favorite.
