Bio
Where do I begin? NOFX has been around for just over 20 years now, which is amazing for any band. They have played many different styles, such as ska, punk, hardcore, and rock.
Forming in 1983 in Berkely, California, NOFX started out as a punk band. Fat Mike (then known as 'Misfit Mike' - he had a huge devilock (http://no-eff-eks.com/bio/images/misfit_mike.jpg)) was in a band called False Alarm, but he quit to start a band with Eric Melvin. Eric Melvin and Erik Sandin knew each other. They skated together, and Mel convinced him to join his band as a side project from Caustic Cause. (Sandin's band)
Mike and Mel got the name 'NOFX' from an old band called Negative FX from Boston. Negative FX broke up, and Mike thought the name was cool, so he came up with NOFX. Mike hates the name now, though.
A few 7"s were released on Mystic Records, including Maximum Rocknroll in 1984 (which was re-released on CD in 1992). So What If We're On Mystic was released in 1985, after Sandin moved to Santa Barbara and was replaced by Scott Sellers on drums. Sellers quit, and was replaced by Scott Aldahl. Dave Allen joined the band as a vocalist because Fat Mike couldn't sing, though Allen died in a car accident a few months later. Imagine what NOFX would be like now if Fat Mike didn't sing and they had a separate vocalist.
In 1985, Allen died, and Scott (the drummer) quit. Mike and Mel went to colleges in California. Mel met up with Sandin and convinced him to play drums with them again, since they had no drummer. Dave Casillas was discovered and he played guitar for a while.
Dave eventually quit the band, and Steve Kidwiller was discovered. He was awesome. If you've ever listened to S&M Airlines or Ribbed, you probably know that he played lead guitar. He was an amazing guitar player that could play great solos. Just listen to Green Corn or Shower Days (I've provided both songs for download) and you'll see what I mean. Unfortunately, Steve quit the band in 1991. Apparently he had problems with other members in the band being heavy drinkers and addicted to heroin (*cough* Smelly *cough*). He thought that punk wasn't going to go anywhere, and he would be better off in a rock/metal band.
El Hefe (Aaron Abeyta) was discovered in 1992. He was a very skilled guitar player, as well as on the trumpet. Songs like Eat the Meek and Kill All the White Man just wouldn't be the same without the trumpet. White Trash, Two Heebs, and a Bean was released in 1992. It was almost titled White Trash, Two Kikes, and a Spick, but Melvin's grandma was offended by the title. NOFX has not changed members since Hefe Joined in '92.
In 1996, Heavy Petting Zoo (Eating Lamb) was released, and there was tons of controversy. The original cover had a picture of a guy 69-ing a sheep, and a lot of people thought it was gross. Due to a lot of people complaining about it, it was later replaced by the guy just fingering it. :p
The Decline was released in 1999, and it is considered by some (like me) to be one of the greatest pop-punk records of all time. It's 18 minutes of pure energy. With great bass lines, and some killer solos, it's one you'll want to listen to again and again. I'll try and upload it so everyone can listen to it. :D
NOFX went on to release Punk in Drublic, So Long and Thanks For All the Shoes, and Pump Up the Valuum, all milestone pop-punk albums.
In their more recent years, NOFX has gone towards the more political side of punk. Writing songs like "Idiot Son of an Asshole" and "American Errorist" has caused a lot of people to either A)Stop liking them and wishing they would go back to how they were, or B) Start to like them more and start to hate the president to be cool. They always had some political elements, but I thought they were better before The War On Errorism.
NOFX has become one of the most influential pop-punk bands of all time. Let's hope they can stick together and make it another 20 years. :chug: They'd be rockin' in their 60's.
I'll probably realize some things I missed eventually, so there will most likely be some editing. And I know that there wasn't a lot of information on their more recent days, but I couldn't find anything about it. It was all about when they first started. Feel free to ask/comment/suggest anything. :)
A Few Interesting Facts
-At Warped Tour '98 in Houston, Texas, NOFX thought they sucked so they threw $5,000 in $1 bills into the audience.
-El Hefe was in the Bad News Bears.
-In the Simpsons episode "Bart vs. Lisa vs. the Third Grade," Fat Mike and El Hefe's name appear on the wall of lost children.
-All of the members today are over the age of 30.
-Three members of NOFX were influenced by Minor Threat's straight edge movement in 1983, but they were never a straight edge band.
-Fat Mike isn't that fat.

nice bio, has anyone got their 7 Inch yet?
I have all 3 of the new 7"s and I can say that they aren't bad. The second one was very entertaining, whereas the most recent one was craptastic
Great FA, although you might want to fix the link in the first post...

Yeah, I just caught that. Thanks. :)
Just a minor gripe as well, but I'd put The Decline under EP's considering it's only 1 song
I agree with you on that TWOE isn't their best record either, although I think SLATFATS and PUTV deserve a little more credit than they get. Maybe their older stuff was a little more rougher and the songs had a bit more energy, but there are so fine songs on those 2 albums
Gnarmageddon
04-30-2005, 08:40 PM
I was debating with myself on where I should put that, and I ended up going with full length. It's in EP's now though.
I'm uploading "I'm Going To Hell For This One", one of their better songs from the new 7"s. It'll be up shortly, I'll upload 1 or 2 more tomorrow

I have all their stuff as well, WOE is a good record when you put aside the fact that Fat Mike is now a political junkie.

I'm not surprised. They have like 70 better songs I can think of right now. But it's a good song too. The bass riffs are cool.

NOFX are pretty average. They have a couple of great songs but far too many average or crappy ones.
The profile wasn't bad although I would have put more emphasis on Punk In Drublic as it is their most popular album.
WOE has one great song (Franco Unamerican) and lots of average ones about how punk they are.
albert_bass
05-04-2005, 08:38 AM
^ Who wants this guy to stay in the punk forum? ^
/Raises hand.
But seriously, Franco Un-american is a very good song and I don't think they have that much of average songs.
Rancid Dan
05-04-2005, 10:28 AM
Heh, Franko Un-American is no way the best on the album.
It's the poppiest, most wannabe political and annoying one imo.

I love that song. The lyrics are great and I love playing it on my bass, it is really catchy. My favorite tracks on WOE are Mediocore, The Irrationality Of Rationality, and American Errorist. The only one I didn't like on the CD was Decomposeur. God, I love Mediocore.
Rancid Dan
05-04-2005, 02:42 PM
The drumming on Decomposeur is awful.
Mediocore and Mattersville are ace

Philthy Phil is on it. Favourites does not necesserily = best. they missed off too many great tracks. Fat Mike never really liked his old stuff when he looked back on it, and it's also hard for a band to pass judgement on their own stuff

Well whatever. It'll obviosuly help a band justify touring and keep playing if they can keep getting fans to buy their CDs, rather than people saying 'ah they're rich, i'll just download'.
I had a feeling you'd comment on that for some reason

The Decline is the greatest song ever written
I have to give a shout out to Punk In Drublic.....So many good songs on that album.....THe War on Errorism was a little bit of a change for nofx in way of lyrical content.
What i I Love is many of the songs on Liberal Animation were about Vegetarians "Vegetarian Mumbo Jumbo" etc. and how stoopid they are. But now Fat Mike is a vegetarian and says he was wrong in his opinions

I'm a total fanboy, and I'm proud.
Seeing as you people don't have them, I may well upload them on the daily upload.
AZNGuitarist... does everything in that link you posted still work?! omgz

That link's one I found ages ago and showed the forum.
It's a great site, has lots of punk/pop punk and ska.
Pretty much all of it works except for the odd file.

Wow, I totally forgot about that link.
/looks at it again
Some of them don't work now, but many are still up. The NOFX 7 inch of the month club is particularly cool.
It was a bit disordered, but I've sorted it all out and added cover art to each month. If people want I'll put my nice version on the daily upload.

I tried the site, and most of the NOFX links don't work : ). Oh well i've downloaded so many of their songs I only have to download a few songs to finish up each album.

I'm working backwards through their CDs in the daily upload now, so you can grab any that you've missed from there.
