I only usually use Fruity Loops for drums programming, but lately I have grown an interest in creating electronica and ambient.
I have no idea how to get complex songs out of this program!
Do you compose just the same as you would with drum programming, or are you supposed to make the entire song using Piano Roll or what?!
Any help much appreciated. :)

When I make electronica type of songs, I use the provided musical instrument sounds (like guitar strums, piano, etc.), and to actually make it into a song, I just add the same instrument sounds, but change the pitch of each block using the piano roll.

I do one of two things. I either compose directly on the piano roll, or I play on the keyboard and adjust errors and mistimings using the piano roll.

Thanks, guys. My computer has actually totally screwed up (I am on my sister's) and I can't use it at the moment. I had planned on making electronica all night until morning, as I don't really sleep, but oh well that's another plan down the drain. Time to whip out the acoustic and go analogue. I discovered that I can sing today. Go me.
So basically, what is being said is that you should do the entire song using the Piano Roll, and not bother with the Step Sequencer?
I don't have a keyboard at the moment, so all melodies etc. are getting programmed.
Also, anyone mind posting some of their work? :)

I use the step sequencer for the drums, everything else is on the piano roll. And then you sort everything out with the playlist.
I'll send you a song I just made (I posted it in the Audio Arena), it's really crappy but I'm just starting on the program as well. I'm sending you the fl file itself, so you can see how I use the step sequencer and the piano roll etc. Hopefully this can help show you a really, really basic way to do things.

p.s. don't make fun of the song :upset:
edit: oh and the drums might be messed up because for some reason I have to re-load the patches everytime I start the program, but just ignore that.

It won't load up the file :( . It would have been awesome to see how you did everything.
Could you send it as mp3 so I can at least listen to the song?
I think I have an idea of how to do it now.
- drums on step sequencer, which are put onto the playlist in whatever order
- step sequencer used for a piano roll piece, which one (or how many is needed in the song) is put onto the playlist, which will play over the drum sequences
Voila!

Also, where can I get more samples etc.?

Yep that's how I do it. If there is a better way, I don't know about it.

Like I said it's really crappy, I'm just starting out on the program as well so don't expect much.
As for getting samples, I don't know. There might be websites around, but you can add any wav or midi file by going file - import.

Heh thanks I guess. :)
If you end up making some songs post them up, I'd love to hear them. :)

I have started on a little dark electronica piece, it is very simple, minimalistic and amature really, but it will definately get expanded on tommorow, and I will also add some vocals.
It's wierd, I couldn't even name over ten electronica artists yet I have a huge urge to make the music. :confusing:
