you know, i often see singers singing out of tune on stage, rhcp singer is an example. but is it because they basically suck at singing or when you get on stage, and get nervous, it happens to be like that? i can understand trembling or not reaching high notes or forgetting lyrics but singing out of key, isn't it something basic and almost instinctive? obviously i've never sung on stage so enlighten me.

I suppose part of it goes into being live.
1. Live performance is much rawrer and power orientated, they can make up for not being perfect on stage wheras on CD they need to get everything done with vocals alone
2. Touring, generally doing a gig every night for a month will take it's toll, the vocalist will be tired e.t.c. and they won't give their best performance as if it was a one off show.
3. Sound on stage, they might not be able to hear their vocals, most vocalists should be able to feel when their intune without having to hear it but no-ones perfect.

Or sometimes they just get brutally lost in the passion of a song, I have a video for a song by TBS with Jesse from Brand New, the songs a fairly personal one and vocally, he sucks, this is mostly because he spends most of the song doing things like wrapping mic cables round his neck and choking himself :)

Jim Adkins from Jimmy Eat World tends to sing out of key live a LOT, but usually it sounds like he's doing it to add to the show or put a spin on certain parts in the songs to make them standout for that one concert.

um...its generally because they dont know what theyre doing...and or relying too much on hearing themselves. Stage monitors suck many a times for vocalists.
