its usually a good idea to name one song that you'll all learn before the first practise, but don't worry about it. talk to the guys, talk about what music you like, maybe show some riffs you've written, jamming is good too.

It would be a good idea to learn a few covers, unless you've been writing a bit on your own, in which case, try and see how you can build on your song in a jam. To answer your question, a jam, in my personal experience, is just improving with your whole band, building on one part until you've got something.

jamming is simply playing something in a band without adhering to a score. It can be anything from total improvisation to messing about on a cover.
Jams are often used in a band to build upon song ideas and come up with more. IE play the song again and again with improvisation until it gets better. Repeat.

The first time my band and I met together we sat around for nearly an hour doing practically nothing because we couldn't decide on anything to start with.
So we did a simple blues pattern, drummer kicked it, and we just started playing. An hour later we had a song in the making and rocked out. After you get a feel for each other you'll go right into playing.
Jam to start out. Just play off each other and find out what's going on. Maybe go with a cover too that way you all know what it sounds like already, that way it'll be easier to perfect while at the same time playing together on it.

yeah just run off a few familiar songs, then throw some of those influences together
At my first meet, we did some acdc, guns n roses (except that crazy solo at the end of paradise city  ), led zeppelin, tenacious D and kiss covers. Then after a couple of hours i started playing the riff to blink 182 - dammit just to poke fun at the other guys...and we made a little rock version out of it :thumb:

I remember like my second time playing with my band, I started playing Are You In-Incubus because I just learned it, then the drummer starting playing the drum part. We played it, then made our guitarist learn it that day. lol. We still play that song after almost 3 years. lol.

what instrument do you play?
if your a drummer start playin a beat and ask the bassist or guitarist to throw something over it...
if your a bassist/guitarist/keyboardist(sp?) than just play a riff and hope someone comes up with somethin....
thats what i did and it worked pretty well, we improvised to that one riff fo likr 10 minutes it was awesome!
EDIT: i was the bassist

Aye, it's probably just temprory threshold shift, inside your ear are tiny hairs that pick up sound at different frequencies, naturally louder sounds put greater pressure on them and after a short period (a very short period*) some will begin lying down.
They start in the frequencies of human speech, this is why when you get home, you'll have to turn the radio up to hear vocals from the instruments e.t.c.
In the morning, the hairs should stand back up and your problem should be over.
But if it's still not back to normal, I'd reccomend a doctors visit in case you've got permament threshold shift.
*At a band volume of about 100dB I think you have about 1 hour to 30 minutes before you are medically advised not to listen to anything above 80dB** for 48 hours.
** The safe level before damage begins to occur

Yeah, just find out what everyone's interest in music is, learn a cover, and find out what everyone is capable of and not capable of. Pick a key and jam out some simple riffs just to see how well it goes. The first few jams with anyone else should always be about learning each other's interests in music and capabilities.

We play American Idiot for fun. We dont actually play it in our set. Its such an easy song so why the heck not. We do like tons of Green Day stuff.
