Serj Tankian Vocals
Daron Malakian Guitar
Shavo Odadjian Bass
John Dolmayan Drums

Short history of the band
Serj and Daron became friends in 1993 when they met in a a recording studio and created the band Soil. Both of them went to an armenian private school in Hollywood. Shavo liked to hang around with Soil often and was asked to become the band's manager. Shavo then learnt how to play bass and joined the band. System then changed thier name to Victims Of A Down, a name Darron thought of, then Serj suggested System Of A Down, for he thought it brought more meaning. John was chosen to play drums just before there breakthrough took place. Rick Rubin who produced many bands including, Slayer, Red hot chili peppers, Danzig, Johnny Cash and the beastie boys, is introduced to Soil through a friend and gives them a record contract at American recordings. They release there self titled in 1998 this one had some hits they never became famous until they released Toxicity in 2001. Steal this album was released in 2002 and was a collection of unreleased tracks. There new album, Mesmerize, has a release date of 16th May and they have another album out in six months called hypnotise.

shavo doesn't even come up with the stuff. daron is the one that writes the guitar parts/ bass parts/ vocals. he also has a great influence on how the drum parts for the song are written. daron himself said he wanted to be a drummer, and that he has a drummers mindset.

Shavo sux i can barely ever hear him the only song that i could actually tell what he was playing was in sugar(best song ever) but the rif just goes 0-7-6-5 anybody could do that but overall theyre my 2nd fav band...

Anyways..My thoughts on SoaD. They were the first band that I ever became addicted to. I still love them today, but I really beleive that they have one of the stupidest messages to deliver to their listeners. The idea of 'make the president fight the war' is so perposterous and idiotic. The only other artist I have heard say this was Eminem, and I really hate to classify SoaD under the same category as Eminem, but I am beginning to think that Daron is a bonafied moron for thinking and writing the way he does. However, I really am the kind of guy that focuses very little on lyrics, and more on the overall song. My favorite album is either S/T or Steal this Album. They are both more original than Toxicity, however, I like them all very much. The S/T is one of the rawest albums ever concieved. Every song is just in your face. Toxicity has some of my favorite tracks on it (Forest, Toxicity, Needles) but it lacks the consistency that the S/T has. Steal This Album is just a cool cd. I know it's a cd of left over songs, but I really think that some of their best songs are on that album. (Mr. Jack, Roullete, Streamline, and EgoBrain to name a few.) Overall, I'd say my favorite SoaD song is either Ego Brain or Forest. They are both very interesting, and they are some of their less political peices, which makes me like them more. :p

You know what, I just listened to BYOB's again, and it is really awesome.
What's even better, is that it is reminding me of System's first album. It is of course very different, but very alike in the craziness aroma of the s/t's sound.
I'm definitely getting this one.

I think the song would be great if they just created a new chorus.

Daron's scream in BYOB is just really chaotic sounding, I don't really think he was trying to impress anyone with it. He does have decent screaming and growling ability though.

As far as the chorus of BYOB, it's there to make the point of the song more than it is to just be catchy or good(though it is somewhat regardless). It's just putting what they are talking about in a silly perspective, trying to capture an attitude. I don't think most SOAD fans really get what they are doing.

I've listened to SOAD since I was in like 6th grade, one of the first bands I liked. Their lyrics and riffs are catchy (Cigaro), man I love that song.

I obioulsly have to say that their best abum is the S/T, Sugar, Suite-Pee, Suggestions, Know, the whole cd is just amazing, its catchy and the political lyrics are quite interesting.

Toxicity is also an exellent job done by this peculiar band, the songs are catchy (Chop Suey!, Prision Song, Areials, Toxicity, etc) and the lyrics impressive, but I like the S/T better than Toxicity. This is just because I like the songs in the S/T better.

Finally, for steal this album all I have to say is that it was a step back from their first two productions. Although it has older material unrealesed before and it doesn't have much consitency and the songs are not as catchy as the other two, it has its good songs (Nüguns, Chick N' Stu, Bubbles and Mr. Jack).

I'm really looking foward to the new ablum Mezmerized, from what I've heard (Cigaro and BYOB) I was utterly impressed, to me its like hearing something from their S/T, specially Cigaro. I just love it when it says "My **** is much better than yours, My **** can walk right through the door". And all the other stuff.

Well thats my opinion on SOAD.

He was trying to explain that STA! was just supposed to be a side album that SOAD said they didn't want treated as a major release.

Anyways, were those 30 second samples leaked or are they available at some store's site or something? I want to hear some of them, especially 'This Cocaine Makes Me Feel Like I'm on This Song'.

i heard the samples of the songs from soadfans.com,, they are down now because so many people where streaming them i guess. from what i heard they are a little differant of a style, especially because of the fact that Daron is singing in every song. i dont remember most of the songs, but i know that i liked what i heard from "Question!" and "This Cocaine makes me feel like im on this song". "Old School Hollywood" is like some wierd techo-style song. kinda cool though.

Mesmerize is great, really hard to compare with the other albums. It's just different. As expected, Daron's vocals are far more predominant than in the past, and Serj's vocals aren't as good or aggressive as in the past, but it doesn't really seem to matter. It's a new sound for System, and IMO it sounds great. It should be popping up on the p2p programs soon enough. Right now my favorites are Lost in Hollywood(easily the most "normal" song of System's that i've heard, Daron almost sounds like Oasis' singer in it) Revenga, and Radio/Video.

I'll leave reviewing the album to someone who is good at that kind of thing, i'm finding myself having trouble explaining it. All I know is, I love it. If Hypnotize is even nearly as good as Mesmerize, then the Mesmerize/Hypnotize will certainly be one of my favorite albums. If you're one of the hardcore "EVERYTHING BUT SOAD'S FIRST ALBUM SUCKS" guys, then you might not like this one either. Your loss. This album is much better than Toxicity IMO, which I thought was an 8 out of 10 anyway. Maybe it's just the "I've only heard the album 3 or 4 times and think it's completely awesome" thing, but i'd give this a 9.5 out of 10. My only complaint is track order, i'm not so sure it all flows that well. I guess that's what happens when you have 40 songs to choose from. All of these songs have personalities of their own. But yeah i'll shut up now. Guys, this is definitely worth checking out.

Mezmerize is insane. I thought 'BYOB' was a sign of the direction SOAD were heading. I was wrong. This thing is fast and furious, a punk album done in heavy metal. 'Cigaro' is a quick burst of obscene politcal ranting , 'Radio/Video' is a combination of carnival music and reggae, and 'Old School Hollywood' is the only song I know about a celebrity baseball game. Plus, it has the best lyric of the CD, 'Tony Danza cuts in line!'. My new favourite SOAD album, although I have a feeling it'll get mixed reactions. It's probably not for everyone.

Okay insomnia made me change my mind, I did write a review. I posted it over on the SOAD board so i'll re-post it here for any interested. Kinda long, as it's track by track.

I've listened to this nonstop for 2 days in a row, and now I think i'm ready to give a review that isn't blinded by the "I've only heard this 3 or 4 times but it all sounds so fresh and awesome" thing.

Soldier Side - You get a little taste of what you're gonna hear on the album, some beautiful guitaring by Daron and beautiful harmonizing.

BYOB - We've all heard it, thrashy with high-speed verses, badass groove riff with the R&B chorus.

Revenga - I felt the same as some of the guys above at first, this one grew on me immensely though. I love the thrash sound of the song, and amazingly you can even dance to it. Much like the chorus riff on BYOB, Daron can bust out some groove riffs. I thought the bridge with just Daron singing could have been much better, the rest of this song I love.

Cigaro - Hardest song on the album, it's alright. Has a personality just like many of the songs on this album. I think Daron is finally figuring his **** out with that, creating characters formed from ideas/points-of-view and expressing them as he sees appropriate, in this case in a silly manner.

Radio/Video - One of my favorite on the album. Daron surprisingly isn't annoying singing lead, and sounds very good within the song. I've seen people calling parts of it carnival-esque and/or reggae, well I don't really know wtf it is. It could be Armenian-sounding music for all I know, but it sounds great. Great harmonizing, I love the ending.

This Cocaine Makes Me Feel Like I'm On This Song - This is my least favorite on the album. I guess it's the weirdest lyrically. Serj just trying to be crazy(and succeeding as usual), and it just sounds like he's kinda half-assing it. It's still a good song, and I like the riff a lot. I miss Serj's aggression on this album.

Violent Pornography - Cool guitar intro, like most of the songs on here. The chorus sounds like something my dad would say to me, but it's pretty true. There's a 2-part verse before each chorus, and the chorus is pretty cool too. Sounds like a typical SOAD harmonizing chorus, which is on pretty much every song on here(as opposed to just Chop Suey, Forest, and Aerials on Toxicity). Daron talks about a "non-stop disco" at the end, I have no idea what he's talking about.

Question - Great song. Very beautiful guitar work in the intro and verses. Serj's voice sounds like it wants to slip into the chorus too early just as he's talking about slipping into a dream, sounds cool. IMO Serj's best effort on the album, he sounds great and the lyrics(I seriously doubt Daron wrote them) are top-notch.

Sad Statue - Another badass thrashy riff and good drum work. Cool alternating 2-part verse, typical SOAD harmonizing chorus. This, Question, Cocaine, and Revenga are all pretty much similar to a few Toxicity songs, only much more complex and IMO much better.

Old School Hollywood - This one has dumb lyrics, but it's inspired by Daron's experience with that MLB all-star break celebrity softball game. I think it's hilarious that it's talking about washed up celebrities and then having a whole new wave vibe to the song, like they're taking you back to the 80's back when those guys were cool. One of those "Sugar"-sounding riffs, simple and very catchy. I still laugh out loud when I hear the laser noise before the chorus. Just a fun, catchy, goofy song.

Lost in Hollywood - I was like "WTF IS THIS" the first time I heard this track. Daron is singing lead and sounds like the Oasis singer or something with a fake semi-british accent. The softest, and perhaps best, song on the album. It's actually a normal song, the only unexpected thing that happens is that it's System of a Down, and nothing crazy happens. Which makes this track insane. Great harmonizing in the verses. And then you hear Daron saying things in his fake semi-British accent like "ALL YOU MAGGOTS SMOKING FAGS ON SANTA MONICA BOULEVARD, ALL YOU BITCHES PUT YOUR HANDS IN THE AIR AND WAVE EM LIKE YOU JUST DON'T CARE." Yes, it is as awesome as it sounds. Daron doesn't try to do too much with his voice, he knows he doesn't have the best voice out there. But he uses it beautifully throughout the whole album, and especially here. I love this song.

IMO if Hypnotize is half as good as Mesmerize, that double album will be my favorite SOAD one ever. The Daron-led songs are surprisingly amazing, I feared he would sound like an annoying idiot with lame lyrics. He makes his lame lyrics work and it just adds personality to the songs where he's heavily involved. Mesmerize is more comparable to Toxicity than it is to the self-titled, and IMO is better in every way. More complex, much better put together, better vocals(though less aggressive and angry, which is fine by me). The people who are all "EVERYTHING BUT THE SELF-TITLED SUCKS" might not like this one, because it isn't nearly as brutal or aggressive or insane as that one. But honestly, Mesmerize has better songs. Daron's guitar work has taken a big step up IMO, I don't think he's playing complex stuff(not that i'd know), but his intros to many of the songs are gorgeous, and the heavy riffs aren't as "chugga chugga" and are more notey(just as he said they'd be) and succeed in making you headbang. This is probably SOAD's most accessible album, and some are going to hate it simply because of that. Their loss. Daron's songwriting could be hitting its peak on this album, as things couldn't be put together any better. I can't wait for Hypnotize, bring it on guys. And yes, i'm definitely buying this in a few weeks.

I'm a fan of System's music but the whole anti-political/capatilism thing annnoys me. Firstly, they release Steal This Album, basically its filled with songs that weren't good enough to get on Toxicity, if that isn't a cash in, I don't know what is. Secondly, their upcoming albums. Wheres the need for two? Well apart from being double the cash in take for System.

Relatively, Shavo is about as technically adept as Daron is at their chosen insturments. They both play very simple, yet effective riffs. If you want to hear some cool basslines, check out Spiders, DDevil, and the intro to Mr. Jack. Of course, they're all simple, but Spiders and Mr. Jack are about as atmospheric as SoaD gets, IMO.

To the guy that said Serj is crap- He has probably the broadest vocal range of any vocalist on mainstream rock radio today. He may not have superior vocal control, but he is a very good lyricist who can come up with obscure yet relevant metaphors, and overall, he can write a very good song.

1.Violent Pornography
2.Revenga

4.Old School Hollywood
5.BYOB

i personally think the album is great. even though its not as heavy as the first one it dont matter. because the originality and weirdness are still there. which is what SOAD is obvioulsy known for. i think the fact that Daron sings on this album alot more just shows how much diversity they can have. he doesnt have the worlds best voice but i think he has a very unique voice in general, obvioulsy Serj aswell. which makes them singing together really well. u just gotta love all those little things to. like the end of cocaine where hes like "dont eat the fish". i was like wtf? lol. and of course violent pornography frickin owns. of course i dont hafta say ne of this. almost everybody already has. lol

Im hoping mezmerize will be better than Toxicity, and esp Steal This Album. Without a doubt, their 1st ablum is one of my favorites to this day.

If BYOB and Cigaro are consistently rated by people as some of the best work on the album I don't think I'll like it.
They only say byob and cigaro are the best songs because SOAD released them early and thats all they heard for a while...theres a lot of songs on there i listen to twice as much as byob and cigaro...its a good cd

I think when you hear songs like radio/video, violent pornography, sad statue, and lost in hollywood, you wont even like byob or cigaro as much. And Im saying if you, as in that audience who rates those 2 songs the best. I liked cigaro and BYOB alot as well, but once I heard rest of the songs, I knew byob and cigaro were just OK songs.

BTW radio/video has a sweet intro riff. Man... :naughty:

I like this album, can't decide if it's their best album, but it's definetely one of their best. But some people will obviously find it to be pure crap, while others will think it's a marvelous album. The thing I prefer in this album over last soad albums is that songs are much more different. In previous soad albums, many songs had similar structure and such. This album has bunch of different stuff. I listened to album like 10 times already and I keep hearing something new everytime I listen to it.

I wasn't expecting for mesmerize to be this good. I thought it was going to be an OKish album, but yea, once you get into it, it's way above average album. Daron's guitaring has grown alot imo. Like in radio/video, he changes many styles and song doesn't sound all out of shape and such. I thought John's drumming was fine before, but I believe his drumming is more complex now since he uses double bass now which is always good. :thumb:

Uh...no? You can express your intense dislike for a band in a thread about them, as long as you justify that dislike. Mindless flaming isn't tolerated, but it's fine if you justify it.

Flaming a band in the band's thread will just cause more flames and arguements. Because most people come into band's threads to discuss the band, learn new things about them, etc. Not express how much they hate them and how they suck, etc..

It's perfectly acceptable to dislike a band, and to express this opinion in a thread about the band.
If every thread about a certain band was dedicated to *** kissing the said band then all threads would be awful.
Like I said; if you mindlessly flame the band then expect to be banned where as if you justify your dislike there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.

If this sparks off negative reactions from the fans of the band then it's their own fault for being retards.

I agree, its perfectly normal to dislike certain bands, but Its a 99.9% chance that fans of the ''said'' band will give of negative reactions.
I have just learned to ignore, and post accordingly to a topic in the thread, But not all can do that without rightfully having a go back ;)
