I heard the first single of off the new album the other day and I wasn't impressed to say the least. I was waiting for something completly weird to happen during the song but it was just alot of pretty strait foreward riffs without the usual SOAD feel to it. I hope the rest of the album is better cuz I actually liked the last album after writing them off a couple of years ago after Toxicity.

B.Y.O.B was a crap song in my opinion, my least favourite off Mesmerize. Mesmerize itself is probably the worst System album so far but from what I have heard of Hypnotize, their new release has the potential to be a brilliant album.
how do you think it would compare to their first cd. Their first cd was genious.
Rushki Smushki
11-05-2005, 03:52 PM
I loved the first one, it was just so raw and heavy, but at the same time very clever with its melodies and lyrics.
Mezmerize was great, I can't believe Cigaro has only been mentioned once, come ON people, tsk tsk...
Can't wait for Hypnotize. It probably will be another Mezmerize, but I've loved all the cd's, and I doubt this coming one will dissapoint me.
I read about Serj saying that "Vicinity of Obscenity" is the craziest song he's ever written. Considering tracks like "F*ck the System", it's going to very interesting too hear it all...

Actually their lyrics are pretty good, they just find one line in some song like Why do they always send the poor, and then judge all soad's lyrics from that line/song. Seriously, mezmerize has great lyrics. Sad Statue, Revenga, question, etc.. Oh well, we'll see what comes out of hypnotize.
I think soad's best work was in toxicity. Chop suey, needles, deer dance, toxicity, aerials, etc.. All great songs.

I thought that Mezmerize was their best album since the self-titled. Question was my favorite song off of it and I was pleasantly surprised it became a single. Hopefully Hypnotize will be good as well.
People don't seem to realize that SOAD is a very progressive band. The problem is that their biggest fans are also the most retarded, and they don't understand that progressive bands tend to... well, PROGRESS from album to album. If something isn't exactly the same after each record they cry foul and say the band has "sold out" or lost its edge. The "sellout" line is the most laughable, since every album has had a single and music video from it, and SOAD never loses its edge because they've always got something to rant about, as well as the obligatory silly song.
So stop whining and just chalk it up to personal preference. The album doesn't have to be great to you, but you can't just invent reasons for it other than your opinion.

123, Question! is awesome. Coincidentally, a week before I hear the album for the first time, I rediscovered a now-defunct local band called Tananas which plays this blend of Brazilian, Spanish, West African and jazz music. They sound like Question! minus the distortion, and with Portuguese vocals.
So obviously, I, liek, t0t@lly fl1pped 0ut when I heard the song.

I like the new song Hypnotize, although I have a feeling that this "Direction" they took with the Mezmerize/Hypnotize is going to either make them better or ruin it for me. I'll just have to wait and see... and listen to alot of the self titled.

You know what i think that mezmerize is like steal this album. Because you know how daron said there were so many songs they decided to release a double album. i think that mezmerize is the songs that werent probably going to be on the cd, and the songs on hypnotize are the Actual album songs.

11-09-2005, 11:16 PM
I doubt they did it like that. Seeing as how Mezmerize starts off with Soldier Side Intro and Hypnotize closes with Soldier Side. I think it was one of those "we want 20 tracks on an album" things, where they just decided to split it.

No, they said there are too many good songs to just make a one album so they wanted to make 2 so that people could hear all the songs. If they did that, that would be crap. I mean STA wasn't a double CD for the toxicity, which is what hypnotize is to mesmerize if that makes any sense. :upset:

It's annoying that Daron is singing more because Serj is like one attribute that makes the band what it is. I like Daron's random interludes and **** but Serj's unique vocals make it sick. Anyways their show in Oakland was jizzworthy. Can't wait til' hypnotize. Fin.

I thought the self-titled had so much more substance though. Songs I think of from their first cd compared to Toxicity just are soo much better imo.
Toxicity had a bit of filler for me, or atleast a few lowlights. The self-titled though is pretty good all the way through. More substance too, I agree.

I love it when Daron does the whole harmonising thing with Serj (P.L.U.C.K... *drools profusely*), but his try-hard hardcore screaming is just plain ridiculous. Except on B.Y.O.B, his singing altogether is ridiculous on that.

Soil, P.L.U.C.K., Spiders, Suggestions....hell the whole first cd is amazing.
P.L.U.C.K is all that SOAD is about. The theme of genocide, the psycho fast parts, the clean and catchy riff and the mellowed out part (which gets me everytime).
It's definitely their best track.
I really don't know what it is about the first CD, but yes there is something there that keeps me hooked on it. Everytime I listen to it I feel like I've had an experience similar to a Tool or Opeth album, which is saying something.
And PEEPHOLE!
Now a question; what's the story behind Soil? I know they were called Soil before System of a Down so... was Soil recorded back then, or at least written? It's just that the drumming, slappings of profanity and only slightly distorted guitar make it seem more punkish and demo-ish. And I think the production is different.
When they where soil they didnt write any songs that are now assosiated with SOAD.
Soil mainly just jammed and never recorded any real songs.
Soil was written around 96-97, Recorded as a demo in 97 and Recorded on the album in 98 :thumb:

Haven't had enough time to absorb it. I've only span it once.
It has more variation than mesmerize. But i don't know, i loved some moments of mesmerize...BYOB, Question!, Revenga, Sad Statue, Lost in hollywood.
I think it will satisfy most fans. Attack is very heavy reminiscent of s/t, as is vicinity of obscenity. Whereas Hypnotize and lonley day are more of a mesmerize style.
Darron again plays a big part in the singing. But i'm kind of used to his voice now so t doesn't bother me as much. Serj screams quite a bit which is good. I suppose you'll all ahev to see for yourself. It's on torrentspy if you want it. I would upload but it's not allowed anymore :-/

It says it's down for a couple of hours. :upset: I'll get it later, perhaps.
Heres the lyrics from tentative:
"We're going down, in a spiral to the ground, No One, No ones gonna save us now."
I love the lyrics to She's Like Heroin
"Chinese Tricks and rooms with ghosts of hooker girly-dudes"
Refering to buying a hooker only to find out "shes" a lady-boy?
If anyone wants to know some lyrics just ask, I've got a damn good ear for SOAD :thumb:

Its all conicidence.
Serj and Daron has a band called soil back before '95 then they formed SOAD consisting of:
Serj: Vocals
Daron: Guitar
Shavo: Bass
Andy: Drums
Andy left in '97 for reasons I cant remember right now, and they replaced him with John :thumb:

System of a Down is definitely my favorite band. Their "pure schitzofrenical" music is just the thing for me... Personally, I like the first 2 albums 100%. Best music ever. Songs like Spiders, War, Mind, Toxicity, Deer Dance, Sugar, Soil, Chop Suey and Aerials are godly... I can see that many people here have been disappointed by steal this album? WHY? How can u say that Mr Jack, Highway Song, Ego Brain, STREAMLINE, and others are not good... only Chick' N' Stu and .36 are shallower... Mesmerize waz quite puzzling to me... I like Question(the best), Cigaro, Byob, Sad Statue, Revenga, Radio/Video... and the new Hypnotize is awesome! Overall I think that we are to wait for many nice songs from them in the future.
About their live performances... serj is a great vocal, while daron... kinda sucks at this... and Shavo is pretty fast on bass I have seen him playing cigaro... the drummer also has some speed in him... so it's all ok :thumb:

Same here, along with Cigaro. I really thought Mesmerize was going to be bad when those songs we leaked, but it turned out pretty good. I also fail to see why the majority of people hate Daron's vocals. I love them.
I like Daron's vocals, but not as much as Serj's. Although I like it best when Daron does backing vocals, they harmonize so nicely.

Soil and Soilwork are complete different bands and sadly I had to find that out the hard way. I bought a Soil cd thinking it was Soilwork and I was let down quite a bit because I had just bought the album and I couldn't get it returned for a refund. Soilwork though, is one of my favorite metal bands.
The new album of System of a Down, I can't wait for. I am not a huge fan of theirs, but I have all the rest of their albums so might as well buy this one also. I do listen to them occasionally, and hearing Hypnotize it sounds like a strong album, so whenever it's released I can't wait to hear it.

Hypnotize is a lot better than Mezmerize. I'm sure the haters will still hate, but these songs are some of the best ever written by SOAD, no doubt about it. Daron's singing is much less annoying than on Mezmerize as well, which was my main complaint.

I saw the video for Hypnotize for the fourth or fifth time, and now I think that it is a pretty good song. If the rest of the albub is at least as good as that song, then I think that it will do pretty good. But I, as well as some other SOAD fans I know, don't beleive that Hypnotize will do as good as Mezmerize simply because lots of people who are old fans have adopted the "I only like their old stuff" stand on it. I'll go buy Hypnotize though.

I just got Hypnotize yesterday. Honestly, I didn't like it on the first listen. But after a few listens, it's really starting to grow on me. The only part I don't like is the fact that a song could start out with a perfectly good intro and cheezy vocals almost ruin it e.g. "Kill Rock 'N' Roll" :upset: I suppose I'll get used to it though. My favorite song of theirs is still that old demo of "Blue." "Friik," is pretty cool too.

Lonely Day is awesome. It sounds cliched, but I tend to look past that and admire the fact Daron even did a song like it. I was just thinking how when I was listening to SOAD a few years ago, and thought they wouldn't even attempt a song in this vein, but they have definitely evolved into something great, and kind of unclassifiable. I do miss the occasional Serj growl though, one of those could've fit on Vicinity of Obscenity or Dreaming.
I reckon with their next release in the distant future, it will be a completely different SOAD. The wall of crunchy, nu-metallish (using the term loosely) guitars that was present on the first 3 releases is no longer there; Daron now uses a much cleaner tone and layers the songs perfectly. Thrash influences are much more evident. I don't know where they could possibly go after these two releases - but I'm sure it's something we'll least expect.

Some old fans seem unwilling to accept that SOAD will always be changing and evolving from album to album. It's not the same as "selling out" because 1) there's no guarantee that what they do differently will result in more popular appeal, and 2) it's quite clearly more motivated by the desire to experiment than to get more money.
I quite enjoy bands that aren't willing to stick with the same sound for their entire career. I don't care how good their original sound is (like SOAD's for example), it's more interesting to see what they'll do next.

Like... damn why do I have King Crimson stuck in my head? THey have evolved vastly from the early years... I guess. Pretty much a lot of Prog bands have, in my humble opinion.
or Sum41, for instance. They are doing what appeals them the most, and that makes them... alright, as they do what they want and not what sells... although their name is more related to pop punk than their little heavy metal thing going on.

Most SOAD songs are great from the first listen to me. Like Kill Rock 'n Roll is just terrible. I heard the live version before and did not like it. Did Serj write the lyrics on Vicinity of Obscenity?
Does anybody know if there is a place to download Hezze? I'm really, really interested in hearing that.
EDIT - I really love Daron's vocals on "She's Like Heroin." Also, who here also LOVES Soldier Side? That song is so amazing. I think its my favorite. All thought I don't like the 2 harmony singing in the last chorus. They just don't match. But everything else in that song is perfect. :thumb:

I've been waiting for Hypnotize to leak for a long time so I could experiment. If you make a CD with both albums on, you put Attack first, and proceed to put the 2nd track of Mesmerize with the 2nd track of Hyptonize after it, then the 3rd track of Mesmerize with the 3rd track of Hypnotize after it, etc etc, they all lead really well into one another. And then you finish it off with Soldier Side (intro) and Soldier Side. I've listened to the whole thing and it seems like a whole work, which is what it's intended to be in the first place.
The track list is like this :
Attack
BYOB
Dreaming
Revenga
Kill Rock 'N Roll
Cigaro
Hypnotize
Radio Video
Stealing Society
This Cocaine...
Tentative
Violent Pronography
U-Fig
Question!
Holy Mountains
Sad Statue
Vicinity of Obscenity
Old School Hollywood
She's Like Heroin
Lost in Hollywood
Lonely Day
Soldier Side (intro)
Soldier Side
I was bored. But I like it.

That's pretty good and nice rating as well. You should have indicated a nice solo in lonely day though. A very good song instrumentally.
great review, I'm gona go back and listen to the album again now.

I like it. It's a bit different to even "Mezmerize," and the instant playability isn't all that high, but after listening to it a few times, it's grown on me a lot. Probably joint second favorite album :thumb:

No just shoot yourself in the hand so you can't type anymore. Your spelling is really awful and your posts indicate that you're one of the millions of SOAD fans who think they should sound like the S/T album all the time and never progress at all.

Hmm I think the band would be decent if they didn't burst into random and "off-key" sounding vocals and guitars after a decent sounding riff (buried in there every once in a while).

That's pretty much what soad has been since they started. Most soad's songs speed up and slow down all of a sudden. They don't have many songs where it's same tempo and style throughout the whole song. I like hypnotize, tentative is a great song. And Attack is also great. It's different than mesmerize, but both albums are great. Mesmerize is kinda slower and lighter, and hypnotize is alot heavier, faster, and resembles older soad more. But every soad album is different, so really, they probably will never make 2 similar albums.

System of a Down seem to be losing their creative edge. Their first album was a bizarre hybrid of Mr. Bungle and sharp metal. It was extremely good too. Toxicity was a bit more refined but a more focused album and was also extremely good. Steal This Album! was like a mixture of the first two albums, which is understandable considering they were left from the Toxicity sessions, great songs here but less of an "epic" listen than Toxicity. Now I don't know what happened to Mezmerize. I mean honestly, listen to the first three and then to Mezmerize. Mezmerize is a watered down Toxicity. Now I know that this album follows somewhat of a concept as how important the media effects the population and how controlling it all is. Does this mean System should have dumbed down their songwriting lyrically and melodically to also captivate this population? Artistically no. And what's worse is this new Hypnotize song is ineffective and watered down as well. What happened to the fresh and intellectual System of a Down who didn't constantly repeat the same message and lose their creative flair? Yeah they're Lost in Hollywood.
I too am not a great fan of the lyrics themselves, but it's not really an issue with the theme more with Daron's writing style. To be honest I completely disagree with you moondog, if anything I would say Soad are becoming more creative. Some of the guitar parts are completely new for soad and perhaps show their Armenian influences, I also think they have explored vocal harmonies alot more especially on mesmerize.
"System of a Down who didn't constantly repeat the same message"
Look in any lyric booklet by SOAD and you'll see most of there songs are repeated over and over.
"Lose their creative flair"
Thats your opinion, I think most of the new guitar parts especially on th Hypnotize album are some of the greatest the band has written
"Mezmerize is a watered down Toxicity"
Once again, thats your opinion.
SOAD have said numerous times they dont want to write another toxicity they want to keep moving forward and changing there music.
Maybe fans like you should to?

The guitar parts may be new for SoaD but they're not as creative as they used to be in my opinion. Most of their songs now use the same chord structures, tones and keys. Use of acoustic and foreign instruments aren't a big deal unless your composing gets better. The vocal harmonies don't bring anything good to the music as far as I'm concerned. First off, they're barely harmonies rather than Daron singing along. I love Serj's voice and I think it's even recently been used badly. Daron's parts seem to bring in an abrasive amateurish type of tone to the lyrics and song altogether. The only good creative step up in the band that I can notice is Dolmayan's drumming. Especially on Revenga and Question!.

Skit as far as the messages I definitely don't see that in the first album. And I don't see it anywhere near as much as I do on Mezmerize.
And of course what I said was my opinion. Anything I say should be automatically stamped as an opinion of mine. I'm not trying to set an end-all opinion on the band for everyone.

They are constantly doing things that they have never done before and are slowly but surely moving away from constant use of drop-tuned powerchords. I also love serj's voice and would prefer it if he sang most of the time, but the vocal harmonies on Lost in Hollywood are orgasmic. I think if a band lacks creativity they are stuck in a position like Oasis or The Strokes where sound doesn't really change from album to album. Soad on the other hand can't be guilty of that, no album sounds like the one they did before and I can only see their sound continuing to change.

The biggest thing obviously being that they've stepped up the guitars to drop C# instead of drop C. The day System plays every song on an album in standard tuning is the day I will lie down on the floor and proceed with my Tantric perpetual orgasm.

I enjoy both voices equally. Daron has a very pop-punk voice which is better than anything a sarcastic socio-political metal band could hope for; especially since it's System, who never take themselves too seriously and enjoy poking fun at pop culture. It is one of the most ironic things that I have ever witnessed in music. And yes, the harmonies on Lost In Hollywood are amazing; ditto for BYOB, even though it's just diatonic thirds all the way.

That's my point. It's whiny, annoying, really gets under your skin, and sounds like Tom DeLonge on Blink's first CD. That's why it's funny. System absolutely lives for taking the piss out of establishment - especially pop culture - so his pop-punk-like voice comes in handy when they want to be sarcastic about mass media or commercialisation or whatever.
In a Guitar World, Daron said that the next album, will most likely be in normal tuning.:thumb:

IMO: drop-tuning is pretentious and a cheap way to sound metal-y. True musicianship is shown when you can:
1) sound heavy without distortion;
2) play metal in standard tuning; and
3) adapt to the instrument instead of adapting the instrument to yourself.

hmm, but it also allows the instruments to go deeper than they could before, which adds to systems darker tone
try playing a system song drop tuned, then normally and you will see what i mean

Not just SOAD. Every metal band of the past 20 years. It's wayyy overused. I have more respect for a band that plays in D standard than drop C - the dropped E string is for lazy people who can't play power chords fast. What I mean is that (1) if you want low range, get a baritone or a bass (2) YOU DON'T NEED TO PLAY LOW TO SOUND EVIL. Chords can be dark without being low. It has far more to do with chord structure and composition than tone height. This whole drop-tuning fad is making dark-sounding music extremely easy to achieve, and thus the market is flooded with bands who can't play for sh*t but have discovered how to play a power chord with one finger.
And btw, I have played SOAD stuff in normal tuning, like Question! for example. It sounds fiiiiiiine. :thumb:

The kind of tuning a guitarist uses doesnt determine how good he is. Drop tunings dont have to be used soley by lazy guitarists. Certain riffs can be played with far more convienience with the dropped E string as opposed to an E string in standard.
