Im new here.. SoaD is my favorite band, and have been that for 4 years now. I saw them live at the Norwegian Wood, and it was so sick.. Best moment of my life.. So, who is doing these covers?
It needs to be desided so I can post it in the official topic(if its still around) but no ones really said anything as far as an official list..
As far as I've gathered:
Vocals: (No one yet)
Backing Vocals: (No one yet)
Guitar: Jmann
Bass: Skit
Drums: (No one as of yet... possibly Skit)
Confirmed Songs: Forest, Soil, Violent Pornography
I guess we could have more than one guitarist or something?
Or maybe it could come down to who can play it the best/get the best tone thats closest to the original.
If you could both post a sample of what you can do (prefarably a SOAD song) that'd be great (Jmann I missed your original post and the links expired)

You can download some live versions of Holy Mountain and Kill Your Rock and Roll- both are songs from hypnotize. Studio versions still aren't available.
where can i download it from??? i alwayd download from Lime wWire which practically always has something new,but it had nothing from Hypnotize... so any ideas where...
Skit, you guys haven't gotten so far with the cover. Go ask in the guitar forums for someone who would play for you, and you should do that with the other people you need as well. Just ask in the according section. I'm sure that you will find someone.
We've got a guitarist, But we could use a drummer.
I might go ask in the drum forum in the coming days.

I could get you guys a drummer, but that would require effort, and I dunno about that.

Wow, big difference in a opinion here, I love both of those tracks. This next comment is gonna be unpopular: I hate the chorus in violent pornography.

System Of A Down is a really great band, but with 3-4 albums all anti-political, it's annoying. It was awesome at first, with government defying music, like RATM. But they got too caught up into the gimmick and yeah, over did it.
Right, it's now available to download, let me know what you think :thumb:
Sounded really great! I loved your tone :thumb:
I thought the trill notes didnt sound to good though I dont know what it is about them.
Whats with the little solos at 2.00 and 3.00 Im pretty sure there not on the original
It'd be great to have you onboard with a tone like that :D

Can anyone get it through their heads that Steal This Album wasn't an official release and an album of all new material? It didn't have months of thought or preparation, most are old demos and songs left off of Toxicity, just re-recorded. You can't really judge it on an album basis as it's more of a compilation than anything. You should judge it more on the single songs that are included, and with such career highlights as Innervision, Boom, Chic 'N Stu, Roulette, Mr. Jack, Ego Brain, Streamline..it definitely isn't a dissapointment in my eyes.

Ok, It IS an official release and the band credit it as so.
The songs that werent used on toxicity got leaked and SOAD didnt like unfinished versions of there songs being listened to so they re-recorded them and released them as STA
A few facts you might not know:
1, There where only 2 new songs on the album: Ego Brain And Roulette
2, However, Roulette was infact one of the first SOAD songs ever written.
3, 2 other leaked songs from Toxicity werent re-recorded: Forever And Virginity.
I know too much :thumb: ...

They probably put roughly the same amount of effort into writing the songs originally, in my mind its just another album.

SOAD is coming to my turf, or Winnipeg for those people that don't know me. Anyway tickets are $40 for nosebleed seats. It's outrageous. I love SOAD and TMV but $40, I mean come on. I even work and I can't really afford that. Now if it was RATM or Audioslave, that's a different story.

So, Serj just got rejected in his idea to buy land and settle in the mid-term here in New Zealand. Bloody Maoris, their pride and tangata whenua and all that. All those 'true' Maoris are way too far up their asses and living in the past. We went to Gisborne one week, and they wouldn't let us down this one road since it was sacred land. I seriously lost all respect for NZ's indiginous race at that point. Serj was planning to scout unknown NZ talent, and reccommend them to US labels. This just makes me hate Maoris and the International Affairs people SO much more. He could've finally been the break that NZ needs, as there is quite a number of excellent bands not getting enough recognition around here, and that will probably never break out from being only recognized locally.

i dont like SOAD but you have to admit they write some catchy and creative songs, but i couldnt listen to them by choice. at least in a pool of unoriginal bands they are unique and have their own voice. Ther drummer is easily the bands talent.
I agree, John (drums) is clearly the most talented musician in the band along with Serj (vocals)

What's with the Old-School Hollywood hate? That's one of the best songs on the album IMO, just because its tinged with electronica doesn't mean it takes any of the SOAD quality or heaviness away. Cigaro is the worst on the album IMO, just because it has a few funny lines doesn't mean it's that great overall. It's real repetitive, a bad chorus, yet I tend to enjoy the bridge (cant-YOU-see-THAT-you-LOVE-my-****?).
Agreed I really like Old School

Everyone I talk to that doesnt really know SoaD say that Cigaro is a stupid song cos of the lyrics. They dont realise that i is a metaphore which is quite simple to work out really. I don't really like the song and thik it is the worst on the album but I think that only because it was the only song off the new album I could get for ages so I played it to death and now it just annoys me.

Of course it's a metaphor. Talkin' about Freud and how some people have obsessions with phallic objects.
(i.e. people who smoke cigars have small penises :))
But just because I understand the song doesn't mean I have to really like it. It's okay but it's a bit too abrasive when compared with the rest of the album.

I thought it had to do with America basically doing what they want because they have the firepower (or the ****).

Thats half the reason I don't like it, but I guess it's just a general fact, if you overplay songs, you like them less. I hope you didn't think I thought Daron was talking about his actual genitalia in the song. Generally speaking, if you don't get what he's talking about on the first listen, then SOAD isn't the band for you.

Shavo is a very average bass player he dosent play anything really hard or technical. The stuff he creates though sound good which is why everyone credits him with being a good player...he creates simple stuff the fits in good with the rest of the tracks.

1 and 2 contradict. It can't be new if it's old. It was written before they had a contract. And although STA was an offical release, doesn't mean it's an offical album.

I think Mesmerize may have topped their self-titled album for me. It brings back that exotic Greek/Arabian quality that Toxicity was kind of lacking (there was still some but not enough), and it proves that this band still has a lot of creative juice left.

I pretty much would have to approve Mezmeriza over Self Titled myself. There isn't so much Serj for once, and the band actually try to experiment with catchier, more melodic like songs for once. And that's a good good thing.
Besides, Serj's gorilla-like vocals on Self Titled get kind of annoying after a couple songs.

Short history of the band
Serj and Daron became friends in 1993 when they met in a a recording studio and created the band Soil. Both of them went to an armenian private school in Hollywood. Shavo liked to hang around with Soil often and was asked to become the band's manager. Shavo then learnt how to play bass and joined the band. System then changed thier name to Victims Of A Down, a name Darron thought of, then Serj suggested System Of A Down, for he thought it brought more meaning. John was chosen to play drums just before there breakthrough took place. Rick Rubin who produced many bands including, Slayer, Red hot chili peppers, Danzig, Johnny Cash and the beastie boys, is introduced to Soil through a friend and gives them a record contract at American recordings. They release there self titled in 1998 this one had some hits they never became famous until they released Toxicity in 2001. Steal this album was released in 2002 and was a collection of unreleased tracks. There new album, Mesmerize, has a release date of 16th May and they have another album out in six months called hypnotise.

I would the overall talent of each member like so:
Serj Tankian- Great lyricist, very wide vocal range. Very original
John Dolmayan- Fairly good drummer as far as modern rock goes. Plus, he can write some cool little drum fills.
Daron Malakian- There is nothing special about his guitar playing. Most of his riffs are just powerchords churned out as fast as possible without alt. picking. On Mezmerize, he did incorporate more unique scales to create some cooler exotic-sounding riffs in Radio/Video
Shavo Odadjin- This man is just there because he has cool facial hair. He is hardly ever heard, and when he is, he is just following the guitar.

Personnally, i think John a bit better than just fairly good. A lot of the stuff he does doesn't sound hard, but really is.
For example, the Revenga chorus. Sounds simple enough, right? He's actually playing two completely differnt beats at the same (one with the left hand, one with the right). Very hard to do as you're using two very different timings at the same time. <--Indirect quote from my friend who's a drummer.
Also, Daron is the main lyricist now. And as a guitarist myself, I think his writing is fairly interesting and unique, even if it is mostly based around powerchords.
But thats just my opinion.

disagree about john. right when i started drums i loved soad and the first song i learned was sugar and spiders soon after that.. and he amazed me, especially live. he plays sugar so much different live and it sounds soo good. and daron rights some sweet stuff too, i mean some solos are hard.. otherwise i agree.. thats my opinion

I like his drumming alot. He doesn't just use simple beats. I like his use of the little cymbals and that bell or whatever it is he uses live. It adds more originality to the songs imo.

Agreed. Daron is an above average guitarist, and most of his riffs have used powerchords most of the time. Although he has started to expand a little more like you pointed out in radio/video. Also he has added nice intros to most songs.
Shavo Odadjin- This man is just there because he has cool facial hair. He is hardly ever heard, and when he is, he is just following the guitar.
Agreed. Shavo is barely ever heard, and he's an ok bassist I guess. He is heard in psycho although nothing impressive as far as the bass goes.

I think Dolmayan is best on Sugar. He plays a pretty mean jazz beat for a rock drummer. Even though IEAIEO has a cool beat it's fairly easy.

I can do it but it takes effort, jazz is definately demanding.
On another note, I hope Hypnotize is a little wierder than Mezmerize.

Agreed...Mezmerize didnt have all the "weirdness" that was in the first couple of albums.

It also lacked in the lyrics department. Radio Video's lyrics were so repetative even though I love the song.
Serj > Daron

I like darons vocals but thats it...IMO i thought the albums were much better when daron only did backup instead of takeing over...and since hes doing more on vocals it seems to have dimminished his guitar playing. He need to focus on playing more than singing and i think the albums would improve

I meant in terms of lyrics that Serj > Daron. Serj is a better singer too but somtimes I can go for some Daron. Alot of the songs just repeat the same line over and over on this one. I still love it though.

Well Kill Rock N Roll And Holy Mountain sound amazing compared to stuff on mezmerize so I think Hypnotize is gonna be sweet :thumb:

I heard holy mountain, and didn't like it much. That could be due to sound quality too though. What I heard it was an "ok" track, I like stuff on mezmerize so much more. I didn't hear kill rock n roll yet though.

I like Mezmerize a lot, so if any of the Hypnotize songs are better then I'll be very excited. Either way, I think I'll hold off on downloading them and just wait until the singles start showing up on the radio and MTV. If the first single from Hypnotize is anything like BYOB then it will be unavoidable on modern rock stations.

Speaking of BYOB, does anyone else find it to be one of the weakest tracks on Mezmerize? I mean, wtf, there is very little to it, even for a SoaD song. Maybe it's just the fact that I've heard it far too many times on the radio, but i really think that it was a bad choice for a single. Maybe they chose to release it because it had such a blunt(yet moronic) message to go along with it.

I still like BYOB but nowhere as much as most of other songs. The only song that I would rate even less than BYOB is cigaro. I liked cigaro before mezmerize came out but not much anymore.

IMO its an ok song but deffinantly not good enough for the single...I think the single instead of B.Y.O.B should have been Violent Pornography or Sad Statue.

I skip that and Cigaro over when listening to Mezmerize.
Awesome tracks guys, Jmann could you send me the guitar track on its own? (skitgraves@gmail.com)
I need all the tracks seperate for the mixing. :thumb:
I'll add the bass later, Do you have a copy of the tab you used? I'd be certain that what Im playing fits with the guitars then.
Edit: If no-one is gonna step up for vocals I'll try get them done too :thumb:

Holy mountain and kill rock n roll have a lot of promise for the new album those two songs were probably better than anything on mezmerize for some reason I hated mezmerize and system of a down when they released toxicity were my favourite band. :/

That one is correct too. Except on the chorus. I play
---------------0----1----5--
---------------0----1----5--
-8-10-8-7-5-4-0----1----5--
And on Chorus End 2. Only play the -8-8-8-8-7-5- part twice.
Ok, Thanks, I'll try get the bass sorted out soon :thumb:

If you loved them that much then you would wait until they release the album :p. I haven't heard much talk of new material to be honest but I am sure you could find some on any p2p service.
