i don't really understand compression. i know it basically smoothes out the dynamics but i don't know how to use it effectively. i'm using audacity, and i have to choose a ratio, threshold and attack time. i don't know what they mean. help?

Scroll down to see the compression concepts in that second link.

If you're still not sure what it all means, I'll give you my own interpretation upon request. I'm just in the middle of finals and too dead tired to figure out my wording for it at the moment.

they way I learned was by playing the audio clip, and just messing with all the sliders and such to see what they did.

Read a good atricle, like the one at tweaklabz, and then try for yourslf to get a feel for what those things really do in practice rather than in theory.
