Why does everyone around here write about suicide, death, and the lot...sure a couple of those songs due, but isn't there so much more that one could write about, that would not only be a...better subject, but it would give some variety...I mean, write about something inspirational, or thought provoking, or at least something less homicidal....

The best answer is that you write about what you're inspired to write, and forcing something else is fake and unreal. *shrug* I'd like more variety too, but I'm not going to tell people to stop writing what they do.

I'm not trying to say stop what your writing, just start writng more variety, it marks/makes a good writer, imo

Not at all. THe best writers are the ones who can rehash the same topic a million times while keeping it interesting every time.

I write about pain, anger, pleasure and attraction.
But its all about the people who write it. What they have on their mind, and what their source is.
You cant really change that.

True story ^^ - So glad I adopted this guy as a n00b, he speaks sense. (although he's about to surpass my postcount any day now... :upset: )

Anywho, I've recently made an effort to write more diverse stuff, and I've really enjoyed the challenge. In fact, I've probably been writing better since I made the change... meh, down to the individual, I guess.

I think its because in the world there are a lot more global negative things rather than positive. The things that make you feel happy in life are normally personal, and no-one really wants to hear about your new drum kit in song, and love songs tend to be cheesy or hard to turn into a song, especially rock (we all seem to be rockers here so I generalise)
Its also a misconception that a "serious" musician writes "serious" music. Serious as in music that shouldn't be listened to with anything other than a straight face.
And some of it must be because the more popular artists of the minute are kinda Emo bands, who write the same way. People try and copy these bands, realising there are thousands of songs like them I don't know, butthere we go.
And of course the rest is personal preference.

Its a mixture :D

I think it's generally because most people have felt depressed at some points, and sometimes writing about it can help; it has done for me. And while each person feels like the only one in the situation it's hard to realise most people have been through it. I never really realised this until I started reading peoples' songs. It's an easy topic because it is/ has been reality for the majority of people. Once people start to find out that it is a popular topic they will try harder to either add their own twist or use a different topic. It is overdone but like I said before, it's because it's close to home.

OH, don't get me wrong, I have no problem with things written negativly...I'm more curious/concerned as to why everyhting around here invloves death it self...

Negative stuff can be cool, don't get me wrong there, and I'd be lying if I said I didn't write anyhting negative, it's just the amount of death that troubles me...

I have full respect for john mayer - a man that can write an intelligent and deep sounding song about getting laid gets my respect.

Amen to that!

but seriously Rush*, it is really what the composer/authoe(you know what I mean) is feeling when he/she writes it that determines what its about. Or what inspired them that determines it.
Good question by the way.

*Sorry if you dont like people shortening your name for some strange reason

I think more people know of death and destruction than happiness and success. Look on the t.v. It is all about ****ty things. No one cared about the Pope until he died, and I mean no one cared about him who aren't Catholic. We always look at car crashes on the road to see if someone is hurt. The news is all about things like Michael Jackson, and what he may of done. We like the good guys, but love to see them turn bad... like Kobe. It makes us feel more human and happier that we don't have the only ****ty life.

It's what we know as human beings. It's what we have to write about.... at least in the beginning. It's what I did... but then it got boring. Things started to look up, or at least I coped with them. After awhile I got a little better at writing and the ideas started to slowly come. I wrote so much negative crap that it made me realize what was good and I started to write about them. Then I had nothing to write about, so I write crap again, thus my new song that will be up soon, which is about taking Nyquil one time and the experience I had about that. It's called Take these pills... so watch for it.
