I thought a semitone gap was a diminished second. I find that it's actually called a minor second. Why? It doesn't actually appear in a minor scale, and made me look very stupid in an arguement over this with my (younger :evil: ) brother. :upset:

Yeah, I knew about the b2.

I agree with Moaner on this. What's strange is all the internet sites I've looked at agree with my brother.

What really throws me is that according to that theory the minor scale has a major 2nd.

It's not about the scale, it's about the interval itself.

Every interval has a minor variation (except the perfect notes 1, 4, 5 and 8, which have diminished notes instead). It doesn't have to appear in the scale for it to exist as an interval.

The minor scale has a major second in it. The phrygian and locrian modes have the minor second. A diminished second is a unison.
