hey guys and gals, i was looking to get myself started on analogue recording. I will only be recording to jot down ideas and record my bands current songs for assesment. I was wondering if this will be all i need to get started.

* tascam porta 02-two input 4 channel recorder
* behringer mic200 microphone pre amp
* shure sm 58 microphone

i understand the quality will not be that great but i really dont wont to spend more then $500 aus.

any help will be appreciated. ;)

that will give great quality. Decent mic, nice pre, and the tape recorder is pretty sound.

The Pre-amp isn't essential, it's nice, but not much use for you at the moment as most tascam units have preamps built in.
And yeah, they're being serious about the behringer XM8500, the professional studio owner opinion is that you can hear some differences in the mid range response, but nothing that makes it a bad mic or that a normal listener could notice.
I'd buy a couple to use with your tascam.

so i would not need a pre amp at first at all. I was told i would have to ride the gain levels and it might have a harsh noise on tape.

That was most likely someone regurgitating something their friend heard from their friend who dabbles in computer recording from their mate down at the studio who they weren't really listening to. :)

A pre-amp might give you a slightly nicer sound, but I don't think it'll be needed. If you can get one, then go for it but it's not that neccessary. My tascam unit (the bigger brother of yours, the one with the fancy screen :)) doesn't need any other pre-amps for my mics, it handles it fine.

it was actually a salesmen down at the guitar centre who told me that. without a pre amp and that mic i can afford to buy everything tommorow instead of waiting another week. Will the behringer be able to handle guitar, bass and drums as well as vocals.

it handles guitar and vocals really well. i've never tried it with drums or bass, because i always DI bass and i don't have drums.

Yeah the Behringer MIC preamps can be used as DI boxes, they both have balanced XLR and balanced 1/4 jack inputs and outputs.
Plus the tube lights up a bit in the middle, but never as much as it does on the box. :(
