I got in contact with Jean Baudin and he said he would come for a visit. He is also the first pro visiting that is as young as the lot of us. Now you will be able to talk to a bassist closer to your age who's already made it very far.
If you want to know more check out http://www.jeanbaudin.com

you know we had the whole new distributor thing rolling (it was the guys who handle buckethead's stuff) but we kinda stopped pursuing it once we lost our drummer. hopefully, we'll have something up soon. Our original distributor got bought out by a larger one and forget to include us with it.

when I started playing I was practicing 6 hours a day (more in the summer time) so I just went for it. hey jean! welcome to MX!
what got you into bass? where is the limit for amount of strings on a bass in your mind?
I wanted to sing, but I sucked. my mom wouldn't let me have a drumset (too noise-y, too expensive) and my fingers were too big for guitar and I had/have a twisted ring finger so I couldn't make chords (at least on a tiny guitar neck). So I played bass. My first observation after my first day playing bass was "where are all the notes?" (you guys need a smiley with rocks being thrown at it - insert here). I soon fell in love with the bass and lived happily ever after. Then I added more strings and internet people scorned me. The End.
I'm okay w/ 11 for now.

(Yeah that's right, I snuck that question in first!)
Honestly, I'm not much into bassists.
When I was starting out, I was trying to learn the other instruments on the bass instead of the bassline. Maybe there's something wrong with me.
Musicians/Composers I dig: Joe Pass, Pat Metheny, Art Tatum, Glen Gould, Keith Jarret, Miles Davis, Bernard Herrmann, Carl Stalling, Herbie Hancock, Hossam Ramzy, Shawn Lane, Venitian Snares, I can go on for days...
I think the only bassist that wows me is Michael Manring, not so much for the technical aspect, but the fact that you can really hear his heart through his instrument. Something to aspire to. But to be honest, I haven't really listened to too much solo bass / bassist albums so I'm probably clueless in that regard.

glad you dig my stuff.
The only secret to tapping (which is no secret, really) is practice. The more you do it, the better you get at it. It takes me a minute (if that) to learn something akin to the linus & lucy song with 2 hands (melody + bass line), but that's only because I've done it a gazillion times. Please note: it takes me about 30 seconds to forget it too.
I don't practice any particular way. I just sit down and write stuff. If my cats are fighting each other, I'll write music to it. I don't pracite redundant stuff (scales, excercises, etc.) too much anymore though I'm not saying anyone shouldn't. I just leave the repetitive stuff for band practice... I get all my tempo practice when I'm playing with my drummer (and he's a metronome nut). And I write interesting enough basslines to keep me focused at rehearsal.
anyways, hope that helped. the real honest truth to getting good at anything is putting in the hard work. there's no shortcut.
The old school games is because that my other pastime. I have a collection of old arcade games (the big ones) in my garage and I still play my SNES, Vectrex, Atari VCS and all that. Though, lately I've been playing too much Yoshi Touch & Go on the DS.

I listen to all kinds of music and I'm very open minded - so I'll take the "I don't know what kind of genre" comment as a compliment!
I got into classical music pretty early and I've always loved it for it's depth, emotion and complexity. Death Metal, Jazz, Classical, drum n' bass, it's all music to my ears.

Well that's just plain shocked me! That's all I did when I had the 7 string and I thought that's what you'd do aswell. I really shouldn't make assumptions...
Hey Jean,
I haven't heard much of your work, but what I have heard has blown me away both technically and musically. As you may guess from my above statement I did own a 7 string (Conklin GT-7), but have since sold it. I found that everything I made on it could be transposed onto my 5 string thus rendering the 7 string obselete for my purposes. Also i couldn't afford to keep it...
Anyway, are you planning on touring the UK at all?
Cheers

Hi Mr. Baudin,
I just have a few questions that have always sprung up when I've been looking over your website - i'd be honored if you would answer :D *grins madly*
First off, you have that briefcase amp type thing that you said you use for busking etc, what sort of reactions do you get when you bring out your ERB's in public?
Also, for that Bach piece, did you read from treble clef/bass/both/neither to learn it? how long did it take?
You also said on the site that one of the basses you're getting made has midi, so you can have drums, organ etc. sounds. It'd be interesting to know, how would you use this?
FINALLY, not that i could ever afford it, but what sort of price range would I be looking at if i wanted to get something like the Joust bass made?
Thanks so much! You're an inspiration!

Did you started with 4 string basses and then go up to 5er, 6ers and so on, or you just jump up from 4ers to extended range basses? How did it affect to your playing style and your technique? (probably you have been asked for this tons of times but...).
I ask you this because I often feel a bit caged with my 4 strings cause I play lots of tapping stuff (in some way similar to yours) so many times I asked myself if I should go on and buy a sixer. Id like to know your point of view.
Thx mate.
P.S. As Ive checked out your stuff you could do the same with mine... haha  Just kidding ;) Anyway, just in case: http://www.soundclick.com/otherwise

I'll try to post... but I try to keep my internet time to a minimum. If I spend more than 30 minutes online, my basses start looking at me longingly. :smash: :smash: :smash: :smash: :smash: - I've already exceeded my limit.
As old as me O_O.
I must say, you've got insane chops and probably the sexiest ERB I've ever seen. I had a picture of you playing the Pac-Bass as my desktop for a month before my friends thought it was creepy. If you're ever thinking of donating your bass to the needy, I'm all over it!

I have 1 question and 1 comment
Tapping??? I never got it, i've been playing for 2 years, very dedicated, very serious about it, majoring in music, going to berklee, commas every where. I have no clue where to start.
if you're ever in a San Diego drop me an e-mail.
Maybe it's not for everybody. Try something really simple and expand on it. I find that I don't enjoy something until I can see real progress so maybe you haven't found something you like to tap yet. Four periods and a run-on sentence.

Hey Jean,
I haven't heard much of your work, but what I have heard has blown me away both technically and musically.
Cheers
No worries, if you are playing regular bass stuff, you shouldn't need much more than 5 strings. The more the merrier for me. I've actually tried to bring my 5-string to a few shows and the kids in the audience started yelling at me because they wanted me to play the 9-string. I had to switch before the first song to avoid being pelted by converse shoes and spiked belts. :)
Would love to play in the UK - nothing in the works now but hopefully, sometime in the future.

Hi Mr. Baudin,
I just have a few questions that have always sprung up when I've been looking over your website - i'd be honored if you would answer :D *grins madly*
Jack
I haven't taken the briefcase to the streets just yet - but what I have done is at shows I'll go play in the parking lot and practice a couple of hours before the gig. The reaction I get is 30 fans asking me to play the Super Mario Bros. theme over and over again. As the reaction, most of them know about my instruments - some guys want to check it out and strap it on, others want pictures taken of them holding it.
I've actually known that Bach Piece since high school (but only the melody half). But just couple of years ago mapped out with both hands. I can play it much better than the video (as that was a rushed one-take). I learned it by ear and checked it against the written music on a couple of parts that I thought were iffy. It took about 2 months to "Map it out" (convert to the fingerboard) spending maybe 3 hours a week. I have since learned a few pieces that are more difficult than that one. There's a mozart piece that is more intense that I'm about halfway through and I was working on of the fugues that has 3 parts which was killing me. I also have some spanish guitar stuff tapped out and a couple of jazz standards. And tons of video game songs (zelda, mario, castlevania, final fantasy, etc.). And of course original stuff too.
I'll be using the MIDI basses (conklin 9 and 11) to add other textures to my music, so for example I can designate different strings to be different drums (hi hat, snare, bass drum, etc.) and play a drumbeat by tapping. Or have cello, piano or snyth textures to my music. Pretty neat stuff.
I get artist / endorsement discounts on all my equipment so I can't really say how much it would cost you for a bass like that. Plus there's very unique details on there that would be priced according to that bass (number of strings, exotic woods, inlay detail, etc.). I think a custom Ken Lawrence 5-string C-Brase w/ the tail and no inlays, fanned frets etc and is probably somewhere around $7000?
Oh, and glad to hear I inspired you. You're welcome. :)

There's no shortage for creativity... in fact, I have to figure out how to limit it so I'm not all over the place. You want to spark some creativity: Turn on the TV, turn off the volume and switch it to a channel/show you've never seen before. Now write music to it. Try to match the mood/emotions of things happening in real time. Come up with a good idea? Now, go record it and expand on it. I came up with a great theme based from that crazy japanese host from the Iron Chef.
Music theory is always helpful when you have more than 1 thing going on at a time, so I'm always aware of it but feel free to bend/break the rules when necessary. Minor 2nds can be a good thing.

How has Michael inspired you?
Has he been crucial for your (tapping) technique, or is it 'just' the soul he puts in his music?
If you had a question for him, what would it be?

So, Jean, you have some pretty interesting lines and riffs going on most of the time in your music. What's your creative work-flow? I mean, do you work from a scale or just messing about by ear. And how do you incorporate your work with the rest of the band. Do you figure out a song sitting and talking about it or do you jam until it just sounds right?
Also, Nuclear Rabbit seems to be influenced by tons of things. It sorta reminds me of the Dillinger Escape Plan. But what are your personal favorite bands.
Oh, and have you ever thought about experimenting with the fretless bass guitar?
Anyhow, it's always a big inspiration seeing players as talented as you get their groove on, so rock on and thanks for coming.

Hey Jean;
As a clearly talented bassist, you're ability is no limit to what you can play. Do you ever get the urge to play hideously over complicated bass parts that would detract from the song as a whole? I'm still very much limited by my ability, but I still find myself wanting to play solos all over the place... :upset:

Well, anything you practice at you'll see an improvement. If you want to get better at playing scales, practice/learn scales. If you want to get better at tapping, practice/learn tapping... if you want to get better at composition, practice writing. Record yourself and listen to it. I already honed my tapping technique before I heard Michael, but I think he's got killer technique and I love what he does with the Hyperbass. And plus he plays the bass with so much joy and character.
I only got into Michael a couple of years ago and he inspired me to try some solo pieces (I've been an ensemble guy the whole time and that's how I've always written). He's given me some great tips for solo playing too and we've discussed how we each came up with different solutions on how to slap on a bass with an extended fingerboard (he rakes the strings, I pull with my fingernails). I talk to him occassionally, so I don't have any questions for him right now (hey michael!).
I've hear the name (NHOP) but I don't know if I've heard his playing... I said it before, but I'm not into "bass" players.... I don't read Bass Player magazine and follow bassists. Pretty sad, huh?

Hi, I think it's great you've taken time to visit our forum :thumb:
You or your band ever make it down to the east bay or south bay (I see you're in novato)? Ever run into Metallica up there? :p Ever go to Sears Point to watch the racing? I wish I lived a little closer to that track
Have you always been a professional musician? What sort of jobs did you do before doing music full time? I'm assuming you're a full time musician here ;)
okay, guys going in for another round... if I'm missing any questions just repost them.
Yeah, we play out in the East Bay and the South Bay, but I don't think there's much left in the South Bay after the Cactus Club closed. James lives in Novato and we see him all the time around town (we even have a song about it). When we were kids our drummer would put nuclear rabbit stickers on his car when he was shopping / eating. He even picked a fight with me at Denny's one time (long story - hahaha).
As for being a pro musician I have no idea what that means! hahaha.

jean your "Joust" bass is beautifil and when it is done you will have to send some pics over this way. and while everyone is cray about you pac bass and joust (Dont get me wrong i love them to), but i am also loving your 6string alembic. have you ever used that on any of your work.
The Alembic was used on Intestinal Fortitude. It had frets at the time.

I bought it used while we were on tour. It came that way. I had broke the headstock of my 5 (and didn't have a backup) so I bought it at Guitar Center in hopes of returning it 30 days. I liked it so much I kept it. I had 2 hours to adjust from 5 to 6 strings. Yeah! :thumb:

Luckily I got to see him before it was too late.

Usually, we make up ****ed up stories and try to write soundtrack music to them.... I don't think scales and stuff really come into the picture since we aren't doing solos etc.
As for sounding like Dillenger Escape Plan, we've been playing since the 80's, I think they formed in 97 or something. hahaha. They're new singer (Greg?) sent us an email when we were looking for a singer and said he would love to do it if he wasn't in Dillenger(or was some kid pretending to be the singer of DEP). We've been told we sound like dozens of bands that were formed long after us (system of a down is another one), but that's okay - we're more underground and not on MTV or anything. Geez, the deftones, greenday and papa roach used to open for us! I have a recording of Papa Roach playing (or least trying to play) a Nuclear Rabbit song... hahaha. That wasn't a dig on them, they just half-assed it.
Yeah, I have a fretless bass and I have one being built so I dig fretless, but I much prefer fretted.
Glad to be here and thanks to you guys for having an interest in my playing!

Hey Jean;
As a clearly talented bassist, you're ability is no limit to what you can play. Do you ever get the urge to play hideously over complicated bass parts that would detract from the song as a whole? I'm still very much limited by my ability, but I still find myself wanting to play solos all over the place... :upset:
Fallen Angel
I'm not really into soloing like the "widdely, widdely, widdely" type stuff - so I guess not. But it's fun to do as a joke sometimes. I want a bass with a whammy bar for that exact reason.

MY question, probably been asked before, what was your first bass, why did u get into bass? why bass and not piano or guitar?

Left hand not loud enough: Tap harder! Practice more. Lower action. Better Bass. In that order.

Jean to my knowledge you are primarily a tapper, and utilize the extended range basses quite a bit. It seems to me that a stick would suit you very well. Do you own one? What are your opinions on them?
(A robot couldnt have come up with a more soulless post, but Im temporarily lacking in wit, so its the best I can do at the moment)
Thanks
Actually, tapping is just a small part of what I do... but two the videos on my site show it so I guess that's what you guys think I do. If you seen me live (with the band) it's maybe 15% tapping.
I've always played bass and wanted more notes. I don't think a Stick would do anything for me since I can't play it like a normal bass too (and it's got that whole upside down string thing going on).

the bass I used on bowling for midgets in the ralph 5-string (there's a picture of it on my website). The lyrics for SF Treat were "censored" because we got too much crap from past reviews. Instead of writing out an explanation in the liner notes, we decided to just cover them up.

Jean, I've been linked to the talkbass forums, more specifically the threads about your numerous custom basses and just right now I've had a look at your signature Conklin 9 stringer, pretty retro.
You describe your 9 string Bee Bass as having more of a guitar feel to it, which is kind of funny because I've been describing my 9 in the works as a guitar with a bass feel to it. Anyway, at this point I'm going to ask who have you got currently making basses for you? And have you ever heard of Ergo Instruments (http://www.ergoinstruments.com) ? I believe he's got one of those Roland pickups, and possibly a Yamaha? controller in his rack. Don't quote me on that. The Yamaha PU's are relatively inexpensive though, and the rack gear is not too bad. A good foot controller is more costly than I would have thought.

he's only there because he looks good. the wrist band has a ghost from pac-man on it. I had a pac-man thing that swung back and forth stuck on the headstock too (you are supposed to stick inside of your car window) but I had to take it off because it prevented the bass from fitting inside the case. I think paul answered it - but it's called a Midi Polydrive module made by RMC... conklin lists it on their site as a $400 upgrade. Plus you have to have Piezos in the bridge ($80 per string)... then you need to run into something ... I'm using a Roland GR-33 and I have some Sound Modules like the Motif Rack, Emu and Roland XV-5080. I can also run it directly into my computer for recording. I have midi in my new Conklin basses the 9 and the 11 (which isn't done yet).

My argument on the string thing is what about when you get this: http://a62.g.akamai.net/7/62/10424/f89d7319e9d974/www.crayola.com/images/vendor_images/52-0096-t.jpg and you just waste time because there's too many there.

Jean, you seem to play 9+ strings a lot of the time. If you picked up a 4 string, would it take you time to get used to the small width of the neck?

jean, some people say caffeine is bad for your playing, how much caffeine do you in take and how bad do you think it is?

:D That was Subcontra. For some reason the guitar tabs had a guitar, the drum tabs had some drums, and the bass tabs had a microphone... so Subcontra showed the admin the Pacman bass and he loved it!
psh and who suggested the pac9 to subcontra

Hey Jean.
Great to have you here answering questions :) I was wondering what you do to warm up before you start to play? I play a 7string and I found it put some extra stress on my arms and wrists.

I'm back!
if you know exactly what color you want, you wouldn't be wasting any time. I'm not a victim of "option anxiety" - I embrace it. However, I understand why most people would freak out over x number of strings... it's not for everyone.

no problems. I have a couple of fours, fives and a six. It's like riding a bike (with training wheels) ..... I kid, I kid.

never heard of that, but ironically I drink decaf. Mainly because if I drink caffeinated (I'm talking mocha/coffee here) for a couple of days and stop I get a major headache. If I drink decaf and stop - no headache.

yikes... I serously do no warm-up excercises (maybe that's a bad thing)... I just pick it up and play whatever. Though I have no stress on my arms/wrists... hmmm... maybe it's the angle you are playing at or your hand position that's causing the discomfort. Try tweaking the angles of your wrist (if you can handle adapting your technique) - if you are wearing a strap maybe wear it a little higher (not dorkestra high, but enough that your thumb isn't visible from the front on your left hand - if you're right handed). With proper technique you shouldn't have any problems with a 7 string, even if you have little hands.

^^ okay.. It's not that I have big problems with it though.
But you should start doing warm-up though. Just to be safe. Wrist damage isn't a good thing :D Just to be sure...

Hi there Mr. Jean Beaudin!
About the crayola crayons? I see theres 64.... I have you ever dreamed of making a 64 string bass??
You don't really have to answer that, I just didn't know what to ask.

Dear Mr. Jean Baudin,
When are you going to start posting and become an official MX forumite?!
We'd love to see you in some threads, listening to songs, entering bass competitio----- well, maybe not entering bass competitions, because only CoffeeKiller or Bass_Guy could stand a chance, but still....

Ooh, here's a question... how exactly is your name pronounced?
I was looking at your basses and noticed that you had a fretless (with black beauties it seemed), which got me wondering do you prefer the sound of the fretless to a fretted bass, or is it just for certain pieces? How often do you use it?

How much do your custom Conklins cost you? A lot no doubt. :p
I'd imagine at least for his signature model that he wouldn't have to pay much, if anything
this time I think I'll ask (if it hasn't been asked already) who are your favourite composers?
