Hey I was just looking at the Pac bass and noticed the Two input jacks on it...
How does this work? and why is it there?
Sorry if this has been asked.
hey guys - sorry for the long break. I will try to pop in more often.
I explained this in another thread, but each pickup can be "halved" - I can send the signal to different amps. So I can run low strings into a bass amp, and the high strings into a guitar amp w/ distortion, basically getting 2 different kind of tones out of 1 instrument. Got it? The other thread defines all the knobs and switches... maybe a search for "pac bass" or something... hmmmm.

Hi there Mr. Jean Beaudin!
About the crayola crayons? I see theres 64.... I have you ever dreamed of making a 64 string bass??
You don't really have to answer that, I just didn't know what to ask.

Dear Mr. Jean Baudin,
When are you going to start posting and become an official MX forumite?!
We'd love to see you in some threads, listening to songs, entering bass competitio----- well, maybe not entering bass competitions, because only CoffeeKiller or Bass_Guy could stand a chance, but still....
I did post in a couple threads... but I've been trying to stay off the internet, TV etc. - I have lots of practicing, writing and recording to do. If I'm online too much, nothing gets done. No offense to you guys.

Ooh, here's a question... how exactly is your name pronounced?
in france / or if speak french:
Zjohn (like Jean-Luc Picard) - Bo (like Bow and Arrow) Da (like Dan without the N)
in english:
Gene Bo-dean.
It's too difficult to have people say "jean" in english, they end up saying "John" (which is a more exact translation). I have no idea who came up with Bodean as the pronunciation of the last name.

I was looking at your basses and noticed that you had a fretless (with black beauties it seemed), which got me wondering do you prefer the sound of the fretless to a fretted bass, or is it just for certain pieces? How often do you use it?
I prefer fretted. But I do have fun with the fretless - I like the tone of fretless, but it's a little too mellow for what I do. I may have to pick up a couple more fretlesses in the future. I don't use it too often as I don't spend too much time on the 6-string.

How much do your custom Conklins cost you? A lot no doubt. :p
sorry for the long delay!!! lots going on.
I have a special deal with conklin - believe me, I could not never afford to pay normal cost for any custom bass. I've been fortunate to get some extreme breaks in price on all my customs. Although, the first one I got in 1999 - I did pay about normal price at the time. They get calls about me all the time so they treat me well (a producer from G4 television just called them looking for me! hahaha).

I'd imagine at least for his signature model that he wouldn't have to pay much, if anything
this time I think I'll ask (if it hasn't been asked already) who are your favourite composers?
js bach, debussy, mozart, vivaldi, shcumann, etc. - and more modern: philip glass, bernard hermann, carl stalling, marco beltrami, jerry goldsmith, etc.

I don't believe in celebrity-ism... When I've met famous people, I treat them like anybody else. I've met/hung out with quite a few famous people... rock stars, basketball players, a few actresses. And I've had friends change from being regular joes to having some fame/money. It's interesting to watch from an outside perspective.

you can definitely pull that one off on a 5. (that album was recorded on a 6-string). I suggest trying to learn it by ear! I'll eventually tab out the "flying through the air / Impalement" bit on my website. That's the fast middle section that sounds like cartoon music before the slow part near the end of the song. whew.

I was working on one of the pieces from the Well-Tempered Clavier from Bach and that was killing me. It had 3 independent voices which was resulting in having 4-5 fingers on the fretboard moving in different directions... I kinda gave up on that one.
There's a mozart piece I have been working on that's pretty hard but I can play it at a slow tempo. Though, I'm trying not to practice that one because I'm going to rearrange the fingerings for the 11 - so I don't want to have to unlearn it... if that makes any sense.

Hey ben. well, I certainly didn't build them myself. I have a problem just holding a screwdriver - building an instrument is way beyond my scope.
my first 9 was modeled after my custom 5 I had made for me in high school. the spacing of the strings is the same as that bass (15mm) which is narrower than most basses. for future basses, I've tried to vary the woods and tones so they all sound a little different from each other. the pac bass has a deep tone whereas the retro bass is more punchy and also had the midi thing going on so I can play different patches through it (piano, organ, violin, etc.).
these guys make great extended range basses:

My conklin 11 still doesn't have the fretboard glued on - it's closer, but certainly not nearly complete. I still don't have a new picture of that one. Funny, my bass was ordered long before his and his is more complete! :amaze:
The hideous claw will remain a mystery until it's finished. Part of the deal I made with the builders.
The KL Joust (it's an 11) bass is getting acclimated (sp?) for my weather down here and he's getting ready to make the wood bridge for it (ken has already made 3 mock bridges to get the saddles right). After that is the electronics and the Oil/Wax finish and it's done.
As I said a couple posts back that I haven't got any new pictures in awhile.
As for when they are completed I have no clue... they are all WAY behind schedule. The claw started in 11/03 - the k. lawrence was ordered 12/03 and the Conklin bass 1/04. I'm hoping they all be finished by September (probably the Joust bass first).

I'm looking to learn touchstyle you see.
I tried to transcribe one once but it's too **** hard. each note has 4 pieces of information (string, fret, hand, finger) sometimes there are 2-4 fingers on the fretboard on the same moment - I had sat down with my girlfriend at the time, to try and recite it to her and it was taking like 10 minutes to do one measure... we gave up pretty quickly.
I usually learn by ear - but I will have the sheet music handy if I come across a part I'm having problems with.
ah well, I'll figure a way around it thanks anyway :)

Have you ever given any thought to a graphite neck or composite fretboard? They're rather awesome to tap on, and the tone is so even and dynamic. I would think they'd be perfect, at least in some situations, for you.

Have you ever given any thought to a graphite neck or composite fretboard? They're rather awesome to tap on, and the tone is so even and dynamic. I would think they'd be perfect, at least in some situations, for you.
Hey tryxx - the only guys that make 'em (that I know of) are Modulus and Zon... and they both stop at 6-strings. Apparently, you have to have a mold to make a neck - so I think custom one-off would be too expensive.
I've played Michael's hyperbass and it was a smooth neck and very easy to play.

Okay, just got off the phone with one of the producers at G4TV and they are going to have to reschedule me... apparently, they didn't have me booked as a musical guest (???? ) and they only have music guests on Friday's (I was going to be on Thursday) and they have their friday's booked for the next two months so he's going to get back to me with a new date later. Oh, well - maybe that will give me time to sneak an 11 on the show. :naughty: :naughty: :naughty:
So sorry guys - no G4 appearance this month.

Yeah, I like Buckethead. Nuclear Rabbit played shows with the Deli Creeps (the band he was in) and he and I talked about shredder guitarists - seeing as we both took lessons from them (he had studied with Paul Gilbert). Buckethead told me if made a movie he'd make me one of the villians. He would be fun to jam with... haven't talked to him in years though.

Jean,
I read that on your influences you rate some of the great film composers near the top of the list. I was just wondering if there are any specific films you watch over and over again just for the film score. I'm working on one myself at the moment but am unsure where to look as a guideline of sorts.
Also, how do you rate Stanley Clarkes soundtracks? I know he's done the "Transporter" and "Romeo Must Die" along with a handful of others. Being that he's a bassist first and composer second, I was just curious as to what you think of his film stuff.

There are 9 strings so you can use them. More sounds, more creativity. It's just like having effect pedals, or a different technique, it just adds to what you can do. Some are ugly, granted, but they are useful if you know how to use them.

True. I really don't understand why everyone's so convinced he's another famous guitarist in disguise. So few people seem prepared to think that he might be famous in his own right, and that if they were told his real name they'd just go 'what?'.

I have a hard time watching movies over and over again... hahaha. I can do that with music but with movies they begin to lose the "effect". But I do have soundtracks that I listen to repeatedly. One of my favorites is "The Day the Earth Stood Still" by Bernard Herrmann.
Honestly, I haven't really paid attention to any of Stanley Clarke's soundtracks.. I did see Romeo must Die in the theaters but I can recall anything about the soundtrack. As I said before, I'm not much of follower of "bass" or "bassist" music.
Although, ironically, I have been composing some background music for an independent film the last couple of weeks.

Not really. I do have some money saved up (I actually made a lot of money from the stock market a while back... believe or not). Though, I better get the solo CD, instructional video, book done soon or I'll be hurting... hahaha.
When I was a kid I saved up money from Straw Hat Pizza to buy my first custom ($500). I also worked for my brother's company and I had a job as a video game designer for a couple of years (unfortunately, nothing ever got released but one of the games was featured as a preview in a few mags - that was during trailing end of the SNES/Genesis when the Playstation and Saturn were first coming out).

I write a number of ways. Sometimes I'll hear something in my head, and try to figure it out with my fingers... sometimes I'm working on a technique and something pops out of it. Sometimes I'll take a phone number/word/name and place each digit/letter on a fret. Things like that. I do a lot of "doodling" too - I can sit and play and make up stuff for hours, but in the end I usually forget what I played as it was just a stream of consciousness.

Jean, I was wondering (again, seeing as I just got my Conklin 7), you use your 9 for every song in Nuclear Rabbit? I've not seen live pictures of you without it. And how many of the songs do you actually use all (or any of the higher register ones) in? Is it hard to hold back and groove when you have all that shredding potential infront of you?
EDIT: Extra question, specially for you.
Like I say, I just got the Conklin, 3 days ago infact. However, I've been noticing that I'm getting a lot of pain in my fretting hand. Its happening in the tendons on the back of the hand - the ones that move a bit when you wiggle your fingers. This hasn't happened in the previous 2 and a half years of my playing except for once when I got my first 4 string bass, but it was corrected by my correcting my technique.
This time however, my technique is flawless as I can see it in my fretting hand, my thumb is in the right place, I'm fretting properly, my bass isn't being played at a funny angle.
Its got to the point where it hurts to play, so I stop, and now, hours later, it still hurts (though it hurts more to play the 5 string than the 7 once that pain has set in).
I don't want to injure myself, so I was wondering if you knew a possible cause of the problem to avoid me injury down the road. I want to sort this out rather than sell the Conk, as I love it to bits! Is it just something that will happen and will wear off after I'm used to the extra neck size (that seems a bit of a long shot. I don't see why it should hurt if everything is goign right)?
A friend of mine with a 7 says it takes about 2 or 3 weeks to become as proficient on the 7 as on the 5. I'd hate to give up before I even get to that stage!
Thanks a bunch Jean, if you can answer that, but I'm fully aware it may be something you just can't answer! :)

Whens the solo cd coming out Jean?!
Hello Jean
I believe I read somewhere that you were sponsored by some bass companies (such as Conklin and possibly Accugroove), and if this is true, I was wondering how you managed to get these deals. I'm asking because your career is very close to what I'd consider a dream career (I don't think anyone can say no to tons of bass gear, a long-standing band, and solo cds).
Also, for no reason, do you like Super Nintendo? I've been playing Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time a lot lately.

This hasn't happened in the previous 2 and a half years of my playing except for once when I got my first 4 string bass, but it was corrected by my correcting my technique.

hey fatbandit -
since the 9 has all the strings of my other basses, of course I can use it on any song... I can probably get by with most of the NR stuff on just a 5 and a 6. The 9 was necessary for the E:OS stuff which was written to use the instrument to it's full extent (there originally was going to be no guitar for that band)... I've tried to whip out my old 5-string for shows but I get yelled by fans that want to see the 9 in action. I imagine it will be the same when I have the 11 and try to bring the 9 out... hahaha.
As for your hand, it may just be adjustment and perhaps you are playing it too much (or you played your 4/5/6 too much before) and your muscle memory is having a hard time readjusting. Though I'm no expert, I would say ease up on the playing time on the new 7, if you've been playing it a lot take it easy and just play it a little bit each day and increase that amount. Think of yourself like a runner, you wouldn't want to go from running a mile each day to running 5 miles everyday after... Just let your hands get some adjustment. Of course, I can't see your fingers but I assume you are playing with your tips of your fingers and you have your thumb planted in the middle. If you are wearing a strap put it up a little higher too (just for now). That's about all I can think of. Hope that helps.

I got deals with Conklin and Accugroove and I have a few with other bass makers. I assume it's because of my talent, but both Conklin and Accugroove have told me that they get people contacting them about their instruments/cabs because they heard/saw me playing them.
At the NAMM show, I've walked into booths to try gear, played for a few minutes (which draws a big crowd to the booth) the owner of the company freaks out and offers me some free gear. That's happened a couple of times too. I don't know what advice to give you - just kick butt on your instrument and get your name out there.
I love the SNES and have it hooked up now. I've been trying to find some RPGs (Mystic Quest, FF2, Secret of Mana, Lufia 2, Shadowrun etc.) - just got 7th Saga and Paladin's Quest. I also have a PS2 and was going to pickup a gamecube again when the new Zelda came out (but since it's been delayed I might wait for the revolution). Right now I'm playing Equinox on the SNES (tryng to beat it), God of War or Tekken 5. hahaha. Any of you who want to donate some old SNES games to me... hook me up!!! I'll put them to good use. haha.

I don't have any... I'd like to get one. I tried Steuart Liebig's 12-string Fodera at the last NAMM and it was pretty fun. I also tried Michael Manring's 10. Maybe one day, I'll have a custom double octaved 9. :D

Ah man, thanks. That's what I thought.
I've not touched it today.
Playing through the pain doesn't seem a very good idea, seeing as I'm sure you and everyone else here feels the same way, that my hands are one of the most important things to me. Last thing I want to do is ruin them.
The strap isn't so much of an issue (I've been playing seated mostly), but yes, my hand placement is fine.
Ah well, I'll see how it goes! :)

That's good advice, I do plan on trying my best to get my name out, but how exactly does it work? They just contact you one day and ask if you'd like a deal, and you agree to use their products, or is it very official and you have to fill out forms and let them know what gear of theirs you use, and what gear of other companies you will be using?
Also, when you have a deal, do you get all of their gear free? And, do you have guidelines such as having to use their gear at shows, or having limits on what gear besides theirs you can use?
And one last thing, I don't know why I said Super, but I meant to ask if you liked N64.

I don't get disappointed when I go to see a band and the bassist or guitarist is using an instrument other than what they usually use, and as a Nuclear Rabbit fan I wouldn't be disappointed if I saw you guys live and you didn't use the 9.
All I'm saying is that it's not a crime to do something like that. Maybe people will be upset, but they really shouldn't.

Why do you kick so much *** Jean?
Seriously though, what kind of amps do you recommend for less fortunate bass players that sound good with guitar too, I'm talking in the 500-600 dollar range, any specific ones? I'm looking at Ashdowns right now, I'm wanting headroom/power/tone on a budget.
Thanks a ton if you answer, it'll be great to get a real pro's opinion on gear.
Jean, I'm going to assume you have a damper to mute the open notes on all of your 9 string basses, I'm considering doing this on my instrument but I don't plan on using it for fingerstyle so what I'm wondering is if you think the con of not being able to play open strings is out weighed by the pro of not having strings (paticularly lower bass strings) vibrating while you play other strings.
I have never had the need to mute unplayed strings before and it's not something I see being useful enough to learn but while I don't want to mute unplayed strings I also don't want to lose open notes either, and am in need of a bit of experienced opinion.

You can slide them past the nut when you're not using them, giving you all of the open strings you desire.

It's not necessary for parts written on a 5/6-string but it's necessary for songs that were written on the 9-string. Instead of switching basses at a show, I usually use one the whole time and have a 2nd as a backup in case something breaks. Since the 9 covers "all strings" I can play all my material no matter what.
I can't speak for Les, but I think his 6 is fretless - so that might be a good reason why he switches. And Les may like the 4s better. I like playing the 9s better than the 4/5/6s... so I am playing what I like.
I hope that answered your question. Personally, I don't really care too much if someone gets bummed about which bass I'm playing I can't please everyone all the time.... a lot of kids want me to play the pac-bass live and that is my heaviest one and only use it as a backup and for recording.

I don't use a mute on the 9-strings. I had one when I first got it (and yes, there's a wristband on the pac-man bass - it's just for decoration it has a ghost on it). I actually use a lot of open strings in my playing so the mute/scrunchy thing hinders me.
the way I combat open strings from ringing (that I don't want ringing) is I use my right hand for lower strings and my left hand for high strings. so if I'm playing the A string my right thumb is on the E string and the meat of my hand is on the B and F#. The meat of my left hand fingers mute the higher strings (in the above example that would be d, g, c etc.) - you can simply bar one finger across them all. Hope that helps.... if that doesn't make sense ask me to explain it better. hahaha. :p

Alright, well this does clear things up.
Just when you made the comment about using a 5 or 6 at a show and people getting upset that you're not using a 9, it just seemed like you were giving in to people and doing something that you didn't want to... I figured it would have something to do with the weight of a 9, so if something can be played on a 5 or 6, why not? That's all.

i seriously have too many to list.. but I should have a full list on my website at some point.
my favorite effects are delays. I think I have about 4-5 different ones. I also like my multi-fx units (i have roland gt-3, gt6-b, line pod xtlive) and I usually use the regular effect pedals not bass specific ones.
the pac-bass has split pickups that I can route the strings to different amps, effects etc or run the whole bass in stereo. The jazz/retro 9 has MIDI. And the Conklin 11 will have MIDI too.

I'm thinking of learning Frosty Acres, and I have a few questions about it.
1) What bass is used on it?
2) What tuning is the song in?
3) What are the highest and lowest notes played? (This is just to see if I have to downtune, use an octave pedal, transpose to a different key, etc.)
4) Do you use a split pickup on it? (The high melody sounds like it has a different tone than the low)
5) What are the delay settings?
6) This is a long shot, but do you have a transcription anywhere? I have no problem with figuring it out by ear, but that would save me a lot of time.
Thanks in advance. I know those are a lot of questions, but I tried to save you some time by making them as direct as possible. I think that's all I need to know right now anyway.

Hi, mr. Baudiin!
Thanks for visiting the board!!
I was actually being a bit sceptical about your basses/amount of strings in an earlier thread, being a traditional heavy/death/rock`n`roll-bassplayer I often feel 6 strings should be enough.
Did you feel limited on less strings, or is it mere to see how far it is possible to take it?
And though I am not a fan of how your new Joust bass look, I have to give compliments on the artwork on the neck. I`m planning something for my own bass in the future, when money allows it. :thumb:

Also, Id just like to tell you that a) Frosty Acres is now one of my favorite songs, as is What Would HeMan Do, and b) I love that Pacman bass.

Unfortunately we had a server-spasm, and the search function stopped working. It now only turns up results from after the server-spasm.
There's actually a stickied thread in the resources section with a link to this thread, as well as Manring's thread and the Wooten interview... I should really get back to organising more people. I got an email back from Steve Bailey a bit ago, but he's not gotten back to me since...

^^Try to get a bassist which is more like uhm.. using the bass like a supportive instrument?
/risky to post this in this thread.
I mean: we've got a few solo bassists now, which was also really nice, maybe it's time for another kind of bassist?

Well.. you could always try!
And uhm.. it would be LOVELY to shoot Mr. M. Hoppus an email and just ask if he wants to do it  Explain to him that we're a forum with bassists and that there are people who think he is a bad example, because he's only rooting.

question:
Do you read/write using sheet music or tabs (or both...)
okay, I'm going to try and blow through a few of these....
incubass, I usually rely on my ears they are far quicker than my eyes. Probably not the best technique for everybody. Though I can usually hear something and play it instantly (of course, depending on the complexity).

1) pac-man 9-string
2) standard
3) lowest G (below b) highest C#... hmm and octave above the b on a guitar?
4) no split pickup.
5) quarter notes, 70% mix, about 5 repeats (I'd have to check)
6) sorry no transcription, I improvise it so it's proably a little different each time.

Sir Baudin, what is your opinion on pick bass playing?
do what makes you happy! :)
I have a little trick that simulates a pick, so I don't need one myself.

Hi, mr.
:thumb:
I just like to have more variety of notes to play with... it's definitely not for everybody. Sometimes playing a 4 or 5 is fun... but if you can imagine being used to playing a 5 string and somebody hands you a bass with 1 or 2 strings, that's pretty much what feels like to me when I play a 5 or 6 string.
Inlays are great.. good luck with that.

Mr Baudin,
I already asked you this on Myspace, but I was wondering if you could maybe share some technical specs on the Joust bass, ie neck joint type, woods used, etc?
Also, Id just like to tell you that a) Frosty Acres is now one of my favorite songs, as is What Would HeMan Do, and b) I love that Pacman bass.
I think I listed them in the myspace thing.. but if you guys want them I can paste here.
and thanks for a and glad you dig the pac bass.

hey jean just wondering when you first started bass what was your practice routine?
did you spend a certain amount of time on scales and what not or what?
when I first started I played along to iron maiden albums. that lasted about 2 weeks before I learned all the material. yeah, I played scales... but mostly just made up stuff.

hey jean, love you work, wondering, do you play anything else besides bass?
I got a electronic drumset recently so I've picking up on that. I can play along with the entire beastie boys "paul's boutique" album. hahaha.
uh, I played trumpet in 5th grade, can kinda play the piano (I knew the bach piece on piano before I learned it on bass) and I was trying to learn the cello at one point until the guitarist in my band at the time put it over his shoulder (to play it like a big violin) and snapped the neck from the body. I can't really play guitar but I know a couple of classical guitar songs on it.

Just out of curiosity, I have become a big Alembic fanboy (despite their prices), when did you get that bass? How much did it cost you? How often do you use it/where can I hear you using it?
1) pac-man 9-string
2) standard
3) lowest G (below b) highest C#... hmm and octave above the b on a guitar?
4) no split pickup.

So that G is below your B string, as in the 1st fret on the F# string? I don't remember hearing a note that low, I will listen to it again though.
And the highest note is like the 14th fret, B string on a guitar, so... 20th fret F string on your bass?
Looks like I might just barely be able to pull it off, if that's correct. What delay pedal do you use?

"I'd buy that for a dollar!" Smash TV was great. I really like the orginal game Robotron 2084 used the same 2 joystick control.
I like old fenders (jazz or p). Rickenbackers are kinda fun. MM Stingray. There's a bunch I like.... I'd have more 4, 5-strings but everytime I think of getting one the reality is I would probably not play them enough to justify the $$$ to purchase them.

influences... I think this has been answered a couple of times. when i was a kid, it was steve harris, cliff burton, geddy lee and doug keyser from watchtower. a little stu hamm, jaco and stanley clarke (but never actually learned any of their music). then about 2 years into it I kinda gave up on bass players and just being influenced by music... the singer of the sundays, philip glass, scores to movies (bernard herrmann, marco beltrami, jerry goldsmith), vivaldi, bach, mozart, schuman, schoenberg, etc. japanese temple music, arabic music, whatever I could get my hands on.

I got it when I was on tour and did a flip on stage and broke the headstock of my custom 5-string bass.. I didn't have a backup so I had to buy a bass the next day. The alembic was the only decent instrument and it was used. I think it was $800? Around 1997. It used to have frets... (I had them pulled out last year). You can hear it on Nuclear Rabbit's "Intestinal Fortitude" album... I think there are a couple of tracks you can download at www.nuclearrabbit.com

It's the middle right before the bridge... it's probably tough to hear through the myspace player. you might be able to pull it off - you can probably just hit the octave.
I have a few delay pedals... I'm pretty sure I used the Boss Twin pedal (gigadelay?) but it might of been the GT6-B.
