its just the character of their voices, they've used them a lot and they go raspy. also im taking it you aren't as old as them.

Well, your voice is still going to get a little deeper at 15.

It's not related to smoking. At all. It's true your voice will change if you smoke, but that's not what causes the raspiness that is used in singing.
I know what you're talking about though. When I was 15 I wanted the same thing. But I could only sing "soft." Practice singing scales, and expand your range. You NEED to be confident in singing, if you aren't, forget about singing altogether. Just act like you have nothing to be embarrassed about, sing loud, and with confidence. Even if it sounds bad at first, you'll get better if you keep practicing scales and training your ear to know you're hitting the right notes.
To get the raspiness, you have to push the air against the back of your throat. Do NOT tighten your throat. It's something you have to not think about, don't concentrate so hard and try too hard. Start out by singing a note; any note, but make sure it's in the "middle" of your range so you have no trouble singing it. You'll need some power behind it too. I figured out rasp by just pushing harder; maybe it was from listening to alot of thrash metal and replicating their vocal styles as well. Anyway, don't push with all your might, but push quite alot and try to get an "open" feeling in your throat. You'll kind of like "feel" the air against the back of your throat (it doesn't do any harm either) and you'll probably be able to make yourself sound like James Hetfield if you're doing it right. Oooh! Yeah! Y'know, the James Hetfield voice. :D Haha. But yeah, try that out, and tell me how it goes. And DON'T start smoking, it will NOT help.

No, it can be done. It's about tecnique, not necessarily your "natural voice." Dan030290, you can IM me at Pegdizzler if you want me to teach you more about it. I have a mic, and if you have one too that'd really help out.

123 :thumb: practice, practice, practice. don't try to force anything, it will come to you once you get used to singing and learn to project and all that.

Forget smoking. At fifteen your larynx is probably not mature anyways...so it might get bigger, thus a deeper and more robust sound, over the next years due to puberty and whoremoans....I mean whoremones...I mean hormones.

When you go through puberty the hormones that make you grow and change make your layrnx get bigger. This is what makes the voice get deeper for teens.

Dont worry....if you smoke your voice wont get better anyways.

:thumb: Yeah, forcing doesn't help anything, it all comes with practice and projection, just like he said. :)

heh, i give advice better than i sing
i'm in a band, but at the moment i don't sing. i'm just lead guitar, probably backing vocals later, i haven't sang for them yet. i joined the band about a month ago, and we still have to find another guitar player. things are moving a bit slow.

Hah, sounds like me! I think I've learned so much about singing, but it's not like I have the best sounding tone! :)
Lead guitar is sweet. Definitely one of my addictions, haha. I'm lookin for a band too, my previous band was sweet but I was forced to move because of money. Where do you live? :D
