After seeing it for the first time in a few years last night, it reminded me how good it really is as a movie. Its a proper horror film, and I rarely find any 'horror' films more than laughable, but this genuinley works for me.
Discuss this masterpiece, and why Sphere (the next movie by the director) was never as good as this.

I actually thought Sphere was quite good. Event Horizon was also good. It's what I'd call a legitimate horror film. A film that has potential to scare and not some dodgy crap like the American version of The Ring.

Sphere wasnt as good because it never set out to be a disturbing psychological, yet violent chiller that Event Horizon was. I dont think its fair to compare them, the only similarity is the psychological side.
Despite the shockingly poor physics i thought event horizon was a good, original story line, boosted very well by 'Fishburne and Sam Neil. I cant really name a film thats anything like it, so it gets props for that.

Yeah, it was good. The recording of the ship being attacked really creeped me out.
Sadly, it would be the only good movie Paul W.S. Anderson would ever direct.

One thing that bothered me about it was that woman who kept seeing her dead son and kept breaking down and crying. Would they really allow someone that irrational and unstable on an important mission in deep space?

So, could anyone explain why Event Horizon is supposed to be scary?
My friends told me constantly how scary it was, but when I watched it, I thought it was a pretty bad action/horror/thriller film. Especially, that final 'twist' at the end.

I dont remember that at all, i just remember some sort of nightmare at the end, but then that turns out to be false.

I made that up. I don't remember the end of the film.

i first saw it on tv a couple of years ago, and then watched some it yesterday. i like it also but i seem to remember there being more to it the first time i watched it, maybe i just imagined that. and after i watched it a second time, i realised how similar it was to Ghost Ship - a possessed ship with it's captain taking a crew on a salvage mission only for them all to die. but of course event horizon was made first.

Not really a twist. Sorta like, the false ending. Or the final final scary bit. I can't exactly remember it though. The 'final scare bit'.

I watched it last night, it is actually quite atmospheric and just generally creepy compared to horror films now, very good film, Sam Neil and Laurence Fishburn are good actors.

Anderson didn't direct Sphere.
What is it that links the two movies then? I remember them making a big fuss about the fact it was done by the same person/people/etc.
I should re watch Sphere. When i watched it last I was a lot younger and didnt give it my full attention. Hence I didnt get the ending that well.
