I broke out this old game the other day, and it caused me to remember it's ridiculous awesomeness. I think it's tied with FFVII and FFVI for Greatest RPG Ever.
Anyone else played it? And I'm not talking about Xenosaga, although if you've played Saga and not Gears.... You're missing out big time.

I've always wanted to play it, but the only copy I ever found in stores was for $50 two years ago in a Toys 'R' Us. I kinda gave up a few months afterward.

I think the characters suck. Plus the story line has nothing to do with Xenogears what so ever. I don't know, Xenogears was soooo in depth and the characters were so well thought out that it was actually a life changing game for me.

But it's a prequel, shouldn't it have SOME relevance to Xenogears?
I also noticed that there really isn't any new RPG's that make me excited when playing them, I guess the old days of actual story line and character development are over, and flashy graphics are in style....

There are too many connections between Xenosaga and Xenogears to claim that they aren't intentional. Such as the giant save point that is the Zohar in the beginning of Xenosaga.
And I agree with bitterseason, I think the graphic revolution has kind of killed some of the storyline value. Back when Xenogears came out, the graphics sucked by necessity, so no one worried about. Same thing for FFVI, with their giant heads and tiny little bodies.

now, all the public want are good graphics and fancy cut-scenes in rpgs, so the makers are not putting enough effort in the characters and the story (i think ff10 and 10-2 are the best examples).
i think square-enix will fail with ff12, 13 and so on... they just cant get it right anymore.

It was almost banned, and had to be altered before it came to the states, because of some of the religious themes it talks about. I'd like to get an "uncut" version translated sometime, though.

I love Xenogears and Xenosaga. Xenosaga is a different type of game, but I still love it. The cutscenes are so good. Xenogears on the other hand, I like the story alot more, and the battle system is pretty good too. Xenosaga II's battle system isn't that great though.

Isn't Xenosaga a prequel of sorts? If I'm not mistaken, it's set in the time before the World Ship crashed on the Xenogears planet. The technological level seems about the same, and a lot of the images seem pretty similar to me (such as the GIANT SAVE POINT THAT IS THE ZOHAR).

Psychoanalysis on Fei
Written and researched by: Dark
Citan: "He... Fei that is, has Disassociative Identity Disorder... Also known more commonly as multiple personalities. It is a mental disorder where a person has multiple personalities. I have been watching over Fei, who has a destroyer personality within him named 'Id'."
The routes of Fei’s disorder go back to his traumatic experiences in Solaris, when he was experimented upon by his mother. At the age of 4, Fei would not have had a properly formed superego, but his Id would be very strong. Thus Fei’s Id grew and dominated his Ego, while the superego was in decline and so became known as the Coward. The only restraint on Fei’s Id was his weakened Ego, which, in times of crisis would completely give in to his Id. When Fei lost consciousness his Id would not send him symbolic dreams, but would instead, take control of the Ego and carry out its destructive wishes.
Though the Id has no personality of its own, in Fei's case it completely dominates the original personality of the Ego. It is probably the strengthened thanatos that causes the acts of extreme violence, as if a great load of self directed aggression were to be produced, the individual would commit suicide. Fei's Ego ideal is in extreme retreat, producing a low level of self-esteem, this guilt also contributes to the aggression of the Id.
Not every torture victim develops such a complex psychological condition as Fei. Thus the extra impetus for the Id would have to come from another source. Given that Fei was 4 at the time, and that his mother was partly responsible, this extra strength of his Id could come from the Oedipal complex.
As we grow and develop, Freud believed we passed through several psycho/sexual stages of development. One of the most important of these is the phallic stage (2-6 years). During this stage a child comes to terms with their own sexuality as male or female, and also goes through the Oedipus (for boys), or Electra (for girls), complex.
In the Oedipus complex, a boy feels incestuous feelings for his mother, but fears his father as a more powerful rival. In the normal coarse of development a boy will give up his feelings for his mother, then identify with his father in the process known as identifying with the aggressor. In Fei’s case, he saw his mother as the enemy and his father as his savior, thus he felt both feelings of desire, and feelings of hatred for his mother. Both desire and hatred are attributes of the Id. Thus Fei’s Id was required to produce conflicting emotions and became strong. His superego, which should have told him that it was useless to desire his mother, was not needed because he hated his mother. Thus Fei’s superego decayed as the Id grew.
Fei was partially cured by his father, Kahn, who sealed the Id away from the conscious. Thus Fei’s only personality in Lahan was his overworked Ego, with a barrier placed between himself and the Id. But the Id is a necessary - if evil - part of the mind, so Fei was forced to create a weakened id to reside in his pre-conscious as the unnamed one. His underdeveloped superego was thus the dominating force, which was able to turn Fei’s ego to good behaviour, but after the reawakening of Fei’s original Id, his Superego was no longer able to cope, and thus the Ego was laid bare to give in to the Id’s demands.
The fundamental cause of Fei’s disturbed psychosis is due to the Contact Abel made with the Wave Existence 10,000 years ago. The transference of information and the connection of two vastly different minds was a prime cause of the Fei/Id and also the Lacan/Grahf phenomena. Whilst the first instance of ‘Contact’ was not the direct cause of Fei - or Lacan’s - altered psychosis, the 2nd Contact - made by Lacan after the death of Sophia - probably played some role in the manifestation of Id within Fei, and there is also evidence to suggest that Grahf is in fact, a manifestation of Lacan’s Id.
Interesting.

It was actually a japanese only game for the super famicom(snes) but in recent years, it has been translated to 100% english so it can be used in emulators.
