Movie special effects?

Recently me and a friend made a few stupid videos that I'd like to put the finishing touches to. Basically, I'm looking for any decent "movie effects software" (if there is such a thing), so I can stick in the most amateur and embarassing special effects around (pathetic explosions, characters that glow, that sort of thing.)

Anyone have any ideas as to what I should use?
