Reviving this thread from the past, the Pop-Punk forum felt this needed to be restored for everyone to see

The rules are simple. I am going to post 3 songs at the bottom of this thread, and you have to post saying you will listen to one of those songs. You must then review it, and recommend another 3 songs for someone else to be "forced" to listen to

RULES:
DON'T SPAM!
If someone has already called dibs on a song, you cannot call dibs on it. If you both call it at the same time and they call it before you (I.E. their post shows up above yours), please delete yours. I doubt 1 post is going to hurt your post count if you care so much
The idea is to recommend songs which you think not many people will have heard. So don't suggest Green Day or Blink-182
When you list your songs, be sure to include a rough genre like I have below. Include the band name and song title as well (Obviously)
Try not to review a song you have already heard, and if you have heard all 3 then leave it for someone else who hasn't heard any of them. It's not really forced listening if you have listened to them somewhere else, is it?
The ONLY posts that should be in this thread are dibs are reviews. I'm not bothered about dibs because they don't exactly clutter it up, but please don't spam. If you feel it necessary to make a bump, once someone has replied, delete your bump please

Since I said I would review one of Vince's songs from the previous thread, I'm going to review that now and post my suggestions below it.

Mod Flanders Conspiracy - Such is the Wrath of the Thrice Angered Manatee
The songs starts off with a poorly executed acapella intro, leading into a calmly played melody which I personally thought was ruined by the gritty vocals. We then enter a more chaotic breakdown which suits the singers rough style. The guitars sound well played, although a little over-distorted, and the drumming is on-par. It slows down slightly, only to be led into one of the funkiest basslines I have heard in a while, accompanied by a Korn-esque beatbox-type-thing. The song then repeats itself basically.

I thought the song was very random, and had too many different sounding sections. It started quiet and slow, then sped straight up into a hardcore part, then led into a softer more pop-punk style and finished off with a funky and hasty section. Then it repeated.

I think this song needed to find it's identity more instead of trying to incorporate many different styles into it. It works well with 2 styles in some songs, but too many is too much sometimes. In this case, it is. The guitar work is done well, and the drummer and bassist certainly proved they could play the different themes. But the vocalist. He was a problem. He seems like a very loud singer, and on the melodic and slow parts it didn't work for me at all. If they could get a better voice and cut the song in 2, concentrating more on the styles they have in it, I think this song would be a lot better.

Emanuel - The Hey Man

The song starts off really strongly with shouting vocals, over cool guitar work.
The main vocals in the song are shouting, which i think ruins it, but the bridge is excellent, it's more melodic and sounds great, he sings here instead of shouting, the Chorus is very aggresive and simple. There is also a slower part, a break down at about 2 :24 which is very good, and catchy.
The music is amazing, and the guitar is especially great.
Overall it's a great song, only the shouting vocals ruin it a bit imo.

The Dwarves - Everybodies Girl

Starts kinda fast, has some weird vocals, good bass work in the background. I've been meaning to check this band out for a while, I was under the impression they'd be similar to QOTSA, but this song perhaps recalls more of a Descendents feel to it, which is cool. The chorus is pretty much a cool standara pop-punk style, and the phone call part with the sirens after is kinda weird but adds something to the song. It's kinda one dimensional though, like one pace (pretty fast), althought the one dimension it's in kicks *** ;)

In my opinion Almost Here is probably the best record released yet this year. This song is one of the better on the album, it starts off with just drums and some guitar and William's unique voice. I really like the lyrics in this song as well, like in the chorus where he sings "When you said you were falling apart/I thought you meant that you were falling apart" It has a really bouncy feel to it that really makes you want to sing along. This song probably is the best example of The Academy Is...'s sound. It has its own unique thing going on while still being able to make listener friendly pop music.

First off I'd like to say that I love the lyrics. During the start of the song, before the drums, there's that sound, I think it wrecked the introduction but none the less, the introduction was still amazing. At some parts the vocals sound slurry which makes me cringe. I love the end guitar riff. I indeed like this song and will no doubt listen to them again. For some peculiar reason, this song's beat reminds me of spiderman. :/

Razorlight - Golden Touch

Upbeat intro. Almost ska-style guitar. Builds up instrumentally as it progresses. Very simple piece, instumentally structured and very vocally focused. Plenty of depth to the piece though. I like the harmonies they incorporate, but the vocals/drums mixed so much higher than the guiar and bass detracts a bit I think and makes it a bit poppy for my tastes. I think with some different mixing I would have enjoyed it more, but it's still a fun and happy song, and would probably appeal to most people here more than it did to me.

Very cool song so far, kinda harsher vocals than I thought, I thought they would be wussy vocals :p All in all though, kind of a starand 'emo' song, kinda washed over me, didn't really stand out a great deal. Not terribly good, but not terribly bad either. IA suprise at least, not exactly a bad or a pleasent one though.

Starts off with a cool guitar riff, and very fast. Great guitarwork all the way through the song, I don't like the vocals much, don't seem very strong.
I like the Chorus and the bridge a lot, the verses' are ok, the guitarist must be one of the best in Pop-punk. The pace of the song stays fast all the way through.

Dropkick Murphys- Good Rats (3:03)

An excellent song!

This begins with a nice rolling drum pattern, similar to one that would accompany marching or at the beginning of a film. The intro then moves into a nice slow beat whcih is accompanied by the DKM's traditional bag pipe sound.

The first verse begins after around 20 seconds with vocals that are rough but clear and fit very well. They begin telling a story about a character named Vermin McCann, a man who they say enjoys a drink and a sing along in a pub. The singer is accompanied only by a very simple drum beat which helps to emphasize the vocals and makes the song very catchy and easy to listen to.

The sing along chorus begins after around 50 seconds with the count in 'one-two, one-two-three-four!'. At this point the whole band cuts in to create an excellent 'drinking song' atmosphere.

The second verse and chorus follow much the same pattern as the first, carrying the song along in good style and at good pace. The third verse in sung by the bassist in a slightly higher and more shouty style, which makes a nice change and adds variety to the song.

Variety is manitained when after that verse the next chorus is sung by the pair over a simple rolloing drum beat, before the song returns to it's first passion and ends after a couple more reditions of the chorus.

An excellent song, one of DKM's best.

The Descendents - Pep Talk (3:05)

I actually saw the Descendents live at Warped Tour, but I left after a few minutes. Nonetheless, I'm reviewing this tune.

Begins with a drum intro, standard rhythm, a little roll ushers in the rest of the band. Guitarist plays a very rhythmic riff, plenty of muting, it's quite lively, it's good. The end of each fill involves a drum roll and tremelo strumming, produces a nice effect. Bass is barely audible, but my speakers aren't the best so it could be symptomatic of that.

Singer enters almost right away, a bit low in the mix for my liking, but he doesn't struggle to be heard. He's singing in a very relaxed tone, his delivery is quite slow compared to the pace of the music. The singer has a nice voice, I approve. Some echoed "yeah's" in the background add a cheesy but nice effect.

There's no huge variation between the different sections of the song, but that doesn't really detract from it. The solo at 1:38 gives us the first glimpse of something different. It's a relatively slow, again, very melodic solo - very much in keeping with the vocal style.

Solo fades to a short bridge section, drums slow to one beat per bar, while guitar chords are left to ring out. This is the only point where I can clearly here the bass. After this, we hit the main theme again, and this continues to the end and the song finishes on a chord. Decent tune, I can see myself pulling it out every now and then.

Butch Walker - My Way (4:00)

Different from what I usually prefer to listen to. Opens with some kinda weird chanty thingy, I don't really know how else to describe it. Cool beats, but I can't say I like the lyrics, kinda lame, but not to the point where it ruins the song. The chorus is catchy and fun to listen to. I like the second verse better than the first lyrically, but that really makes no difference, I just figured I'd point that out.

Then there's a cool guitar solo type thingy at about 1:40 which is cool, that leads to my favorite part of the song so far, where the singer sings over nothing but a guitar. As he repeats "I don't want to, be the one who..." the whole band gets back into it building up to the chorus, which I think is really cool. Then the chorus just sorta trails off into silence.

Now, I wasn't sure if this was still the same song, but it picks back up with some acoustic guitar strumming that lasts for about 40 seconds and then just sort of ends. I didn't fully understand that, but overall the song was cool to listen to, and pretty neat. 7/10.

Waking Ashland - I Am For You
I really like the intro. It's very calm, the guitar picking is clean and goes well with the mellow vocals. As it builds up, the piano really adds a new depth to it. I like it. In the chorus I think, I like the vocals and how high they are. Quite impressive. Another thing I like about this song is the drumming. Even with the piano and clean guitar, the drum beats sound quite fast and actually go really well with the smooth sound of the song.

I really like the bridge as well, the backing vocals fit perfectly with the main vocals and just give it that little more emotion. Overall, I really like this song. It's not often you hear mellow pop-punk music like Mae or Straylight Run with fast drumming, but Waking Ashland have done it well. Nice song, great vocals. 8/10

Whoa...that chick is pretty good looking ;)

The guy's vocals are just a little bit high. I don't know why, but I don't like guys who almost sound like chicks :-/ Very poppy sound. That slight British accent is comical to me hehe. Anyways, pretty basic structure, verses and choruses with a solo. Lots of octave chords and neat little fills throughout to fill in the sound. Drums aren't mixed very high. I don't know what to say really, it wasn't bad, but nothing stood out to me about it at all :-/

Kashmir - Travelogue (3:48)

Begins with a sole guitar playing quick bursts of very clean chords, it has a very bright sound. Reminds me of 311 for some reason. There's actually 2 guitars... singer enters soon enough, mimiccing the chord pattern. Then the drums, bongos and bass enter with a bang, and the singer becomes more adventurous, allowing the power in his voice to come through. He has a a good voice, the entire mix reminds me of the Tea Party, but poppier.

The first chorus keeps the intro chord pattern, but the singer dominates the mix, with a very well delivered chorus. "Gaaathering..." Very nice, wonderful chorus. The bridge consists of rhythmic palm muted guitar and bongos, before the band returns as the intro chords return. Singer echoes his vocals at points.

After this there's what seems to be another bridge, which consists of "far-away" echoed vocals, some restrained guitar work and some strings, before the band explodes back in as the singer screams, with a heavy(but not distorted section.) Quick burst of lead guitar and we finish.

That was awesome, thank you. :) 9/10.

Manic Street Preachers - PCP

Starts off with a eiery guitar riff, and then everything kicks in full pelt for a very catchy riff with very nice chord changes. The vocals start and they are very powerful and dominating, with palm muted chords in the background. The Bridge is good, slower and leading into the chorus, it's more melodic and he sings more here, rather than shouting. The Chorus kicks in after a nice drum roll and the chorus is very effective, with very strong vocals shouting over hard guitar work, and it leads into the verse again by using palm muted chords. After the second chorus a very nice solo takes place, and the structure of the song changes as it goes back into the chorus again.
Lyrics were very good, and meant a lot. I enjoyed it, and may look into them.

Cheese - Where's My Slice?

It starts out with a slow riff, and then Fat Mike's weird vocals come in. It speeds up at about 0:27. The chorus comes in at about 0:40, with some nice backup vocals. The song is pretty much the same throughout the whole song, with a few more verses and choruses. Though it sounds like the song is about cheese, it's actually a good political message. It's a good song, but I think there's a lot better on Ribbed.

Thrice - That Hideous Strength
Wow, this goes straight on in doesn't it. I'm not a fan of the screaming to be honest, I don't think it makes the song better. The music is also a little lacking on the first part, it just seems too slow to be as heavy as it is. The second part around 0:48 is a big improvement in the song, with real singing and great music. The lead guitar sounds typical "hardcore", and I quite like the scream at the end of the singing.

I thought it trailed off again at 1:28, and it sounded a bit generic to me. But 1:50 with the tapping solo was a bit of a step-up on the boring guitars and lacking screaming.

Overall, I personally didn't like it. It doesn't really sound like much of a song to me, more like an excuse to shred and tap and scream, and it just doesn't fit together well.

Panic! At The Disco - It's Time To Dance

OK, this band looks stupid. Sorry. On with the review, then...

Begins with some electronic noises, and drum n bass style rapid percussion. I thought it was a drum machine but I think it's the actual drummer playing, as the same pattern continues throughout the song. It sounds very synthesised, anyway, which would make sense in a synth-rock band.

Synth, guitars and bass all enter at once, the synth playing the dominant figure within the confines of the chord pattern. The guitar is playing power chords in a Ramones-y style, while the bass is very low and hard to make out. Drums continue same pattern. The music tones down considerably for the verse, the snyth is still dominant intrument, and the guitar plays a stripped down version of the same progression. The singer's voice... I don't like it, but it's not unbearable.

Seems like the standard quiet-verse loud-chorus formula, the chorus is a pretty weak one, I think. Not much to say about it, except that the guitar playing is simple but tasty and that the singer makes good use his voice, he has a decent range. There's a short breakdown section in the middle, which goes back to the chorus, leading to a bridge, which is my favourite part of the song, if only for the awesome bass riff. The song wraps with a short coda, which is also quite tasty.

Meh, it wasn't a bad tune, but nothing I'd consider listening to again. 5/10.

I like the acoustic intro into the main song, nice feel-good way to get into it. The song has a general happy feel to it, which I love straight away as well. The guitar has a kinda indie feel to it, but it still has a pop-punk feel. The vocals put me off a little, they are very low in the verse, but the chorus is so damn catchy

The bridge doesn't really differ from the verses, which I like since the style of the song works well before it. The solo part has a country-esque feel to it, very nice touch. The solo itself is a little short, I felt that could've been extended and would still carry the "umph" it has

Oh, the ending. A bit odd with the mix of scratching and acoustic-country guitar, but it worked I guess.

Overall, I really like this song. It's such a cheery song, with some well nice variations throughout without losing what the sound is. The guitar is nicely played, the drum beats are perfect for the kind of feel-good song it is and the basslines are great too.

OK, I have it now. Guess I was too impatient before.

Kanye West - Diamonds Are Forever.

I find it difficult to write about rap songs, but I'll do my best.

Begins with a slowed down sample of the Bond theme "Diamonds Are Forever." Soon the original music enters, acompanied by a drum machine beat. Ugh, this doesn't work. Rapper (West, I assume) raps a bit of Outkast over the top, "Forever? For ever ever?" etc.

There's a small space and then the main song begins. The sample slips firmly into the background, and a synthesiser starts the main rap with a bang. There's a rather tasty bassline happening, and some decent piano work too, but the focus is firmly on the rapper.

Samples of Diamonds Are Forever are placed sporadically, or perhaps randomly, throughout the piece. As a huge fan of this song, I'm not impressed by what he's done with it, but that's probably my own prejudices more than an actual comment on his talent. There are some nice spots, I think the music in general was good, but as a piece it doesn't work for me. It's probably more personal preference than bad quality, but I'll have to give it 2-3/10, it doesn't rate any better for me.

My picks:

Republic Of Loose - Girl I'm Gonna **** You Up (http://s26.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=08W7IAM2ZKN3D2WTTJ53PM4JLL) - Funky, weird indie nonsense

The Floyds - Game Show

Great start to the song with a very funky bass line and guitar parts, very nice tune, the vocals are brilliant aswell, with other vocals over the top of it in the background, and lots of funky sounds are made through the deep bass line. The Chorus is great aswell, the vocals are very strong here, and the music is nice too, this is repeated again, and then a guitar solo starts, it's ok, a bit wierd and not desperatley amazing. The song ends with a great outro, the music is a lot slower and also very funky.

I haven' heard either of them, so I'll do Modest Mouse to keep the game moving...

Modest Mouse - Long Distance Drunk (2:26)

OK, this song is odd. "This place is definitely crashing" the singer shouts as the band enters. Drums are hit very hard, constant beat. Bass plays a repetitive figure, as does the guitar, the guitar riff being reminiscent of Black Dog by Led Zeppelin. A second guitar starts to play leads, struggling to be heard above the band - it's a losing battle.

Man, this song is a mess. The singer shouts some more stuff at various points when the band leaves at the end of each sequence, only for the entire band to return for a repeat. Reminds me of the Pixies in more ways than one. Towards the end the singer starts to scream "ahhh" repeatedly before finishing with "my heart is slowly drying up."

I am a Pixies fan, and this reminded me alot of the Pixies, but I didn't like this tune. It sounded more like noise than a song. Sorry. 1/10.

First of all I want to say that I don't like this song, so I'll try to be fair and review it from an objective point of view. Also, I won't give a mark to the song so here it goes the review:

The song starts with drum and bass, very simple drums and a nice bass line, then 2 guitars enter one doing a kind of muted riff and the other with a catchy riff but there's no distortion in the guitars, so the song is very drum & bass based. Then the vocals enter, I don't like them but they sing well. So the song builds up and then it comes what could be a chorus with some nananananana as all the vocals in there. Again goes to the verse which consist in the same instruments that were at first and the 2 vocalist saying "girl I'm gonna **** you up" and later some other lyrics and a keyboard doing some stuff over everything. Again the quite faster chorus and then the guitars change a little doing little more complicated riffs to end the song with an outro where the guitars play some chord riffs and the vocals are the most important thing. Then the song suddenly stops.

My recommendations:

Stiff Little Fingers - The Roaring boys Pt. 2 (http://s39.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0YRQ02J1N2280TTKE3YLDV691) (irish-punk)

Captain Everything - Picture of You

Starts off with a drum beat, and then what sounds like an out of key rendition of "Take on me." Clearly a fun band. I can honestly say I like it when a song starts off horribly if the rest of the song is good because it's clearly just for fun, and not a statement of their talent. It isn't for everyone though.

Now it's into the song proper, pretty typical upbeat pop punk. The transition into this was pretty smooth too. Lyrics are kinda typical guy to girl songs (not breakup). Pretty much two riffs throughout the song, verses and choruses, so not a ton of variety, but for what is pretty formulaic, it certainly isn't boring. It has energy and the harmonies are good. A vocals over Bass section builds back into the song again. Nothing new or innovative here, but not boring despite that.

The outro is someone puking, kinda gross but meh.

Starts off with a nice bass line and fast guitaring, the vocals kick in almost staringht away, and the vocals are very good. The song is very fast, and short, it seems to all be one in a way. They sound a bit like Pennywise, which is good. Some variety around 1:18, where it slows down and the vocals go all wierd for a bit, and then it gets back to normal, and the song finishes quickly without any warning.

Pennywise- What If I (2:56)

This is one of the best Pennywise songs i have ever heard, i've been looking to get Full circle for a while now.

Starts off with a nice guitar riff playing over a simple drum beat. After around 12 seconds the drum beat becomes more forceful and pounding along with a stronger sound before mellowing out for the first verse after around 12 seconds of this.

The lyrics cut in after around 25 seconds very melodically and quite soft. This doesn't last for long as the band launches into a more forceful chorus after about 45 seconds, with the music following the same forceful pattern from the end of the intro.

The next stage is to launch into a strong sing along section, with each line beginning with the title 'what if i'. The lyrics are excellent, fitting nicely with the song and indicating a certain amount of turmoil about their state of mind. Possibilities are thrown around ('what if i?', 'illusions for myself' etc).

The song then continues into the second verse, following the same musical pattern as the preceding verse. It continues as a high calibre song, with the verse cutting in as before, before it launches into a melodic, flowing section again. This takes us on nicely to a small bridge before leading back into the chorus, as we are sung out right until the end of the song.

An excellent song, one of the best i've heard from Pennywise.

Screeching Weasels - Get Off My Back (2:38)

Song begins abruptly with the full band plugging away. The guitar is most dominant, playing distorted chords, in a very straight-forward repetitive fashion. I can't make out the bass, but I assume it's mimiccing the guitar, while the drums are straightforward, with the occasional fill. There's a second guitar at points, which I'm finding it hard to pick out, which plays various leads and octave patterns throughout.

The singer is there from the start too, he has a typically nasal voice, it's impossible to make out a word he says. There's backing vocals too, "woah-oh-oh" for the verse and "Get off my back" for the chorus, exact same melody. The chords are the same for the entire track, for the verse they're played straight, while a certain amount of muting is utilised during the chorus, reminiscent of the Misfits' Children In Heat.

Not much variation throughout the song, to be honest. There's some decent lead lines at times, and it finishes well, but the song is generally a bit stagnant. However, the song seems longer than it actually is, as its very repetitive. What there is is nice, but there should be more, so it has nothing that could keep me listening. 4/10.

Duff McKagen - Seatlle Head

Starts out rough and choppy, I like it. For a punk song this is pretty distorted, seems more in the vein of hardcore or metal because of that, but it's clearly a punk song. I like the vocalist, I don't think everyone would. I think it's funny how the bitch about LA in a song I had assumed would be about Seattle. Meh, it's fun and angsty. There's even a few pseudo-breakdowns here. I'd say there is definitely a hardcore influence though it is punk. Simple drums, simple guitar, but a good song. The recording quality could be better, as I prefer good sound to the "garage" or "underground" sound, but otherwise I enjoyed it. 9/10

Blindside - King Of The Closet
I don't mind the intro. The screaming on it's own shows a very good idea of what the song will be like. When the music comes in, it does sound good. It isn't too fast, but it's heavy and the chords used are very dark. It slows down slightly, then repeats itself.

Around the 1:05 point, there is singing. This is such a good thing in my book, as I love screamers who can actually sing as well. The same music is used through the song pretty much, and there isn't much variety. At the 2:00 point, there is switching between singing and screaming, another positive point.

At 2:20, the song slows down majorly for a while and the volume goes down a lot. A nice little addition to a long but repetitive song. The bridge lasts about 30 seconds, and then goes straight into the same music we heard 2 minutes before. The ending is nothing special either really, a very messy finish.

Overall, the song itself was good for about 1 minute, but it gets boring and the fact you can barely make out the lyrics doesn't add much to the overused chords and drumbeats. I did like the song, but I can't see myself listening to it too much. The vocalist impressed me, he proved how strong his voice is both high and low, and was in my opinion the highlight of the song.

Anberlin - Never Take Friendship Personal

Shouldn't that be 'personally'? OK, this is a stream, they don't offer a download, and it's quite bad quality, so apologies if I miss anything out.

Starts with a loud distorted guitar playing rapid bursts of powerchord stabs. So far so good, a second guitar joins in after the first 4 fills. One in each speaker, makes sense. A synthesiser of some sort now enters, playing an upbeat melody. Not especially original, but it does its intended job - it's a nice melody for a pop song. The guitars then start to play straight 1/16th notes, repetitive, adds pace to the song. I can't hear the bass at all, and the drums are mixed quite low. Perhaps it's my speakers, but it seems quite guitar-heavy.

The synth moves to the back of the mix and the guitars take prominence as the vocalist enters. This is a bad stream, so it's hard to make out any more than the basic melody. His voice is pretty standard for the genre, quite nasal, but he has a bit of bite to hs voice too which I don't notice often. In the verse, the guitars alternate between power chords and octave-stabs, keeping that 1-2-3 machine-gun rhythm.

The synth melody returns for the chorus, which oddly seems smaller than the verse. This may be a defiant stab in the eye to the Nirvana-style quiet-verse/loud-chorus song structure, I dunno. It fits quite nicely, in fact, I don't really expect a huge chorus from this song. The laid back harmonised effect works. It's not brilliant, but it's not bad either.

Verdict: 5/10. The song neither made my day nor ruined it. It was a pretty average tune, but it did avoid a few clichés, which was welcome. The tune that comes after it in the purevolume playlist is better, I think. Time & Confusion, it's called. Not bad.

It has a very poppy sound in my opinion. The clean guitars, the drum beat, the singing. I could definately see this song being whored by MTV. But that's not the point. Also, the verses had the same chords as Taking Back Sunday - You're So Last Summer, they were just played in a different timing. A little off-putting that it sounds so similar, but that's forgivable

They have a similar sound to The Get Up Kids, just with another vocalist. The whole song in general doesn't exactly lack energy, but the fact that it's a slow song played electric doesn't make me want to listen to it much.

The chorus is a great part of the song, with heavier guitars and louder vocals. The lyrics are quite nice as well. The bridge is a little disappointiing, as it just sounds like the verse, although I do love the synth over the last chorus. Adds a little more music and emotion to it.

Overall, it was a good power pop song in my opinion. The soothing sound of the guitar riffs fitted nicely with the vocals, which were very strong as well.

Jumps in pretty fast. Pretty typical vocals in that it sounds like the typical "emo" style everyone's mimcking. Not bad, just very typical. Guitar and drums are mixed way below the vocals, a lot of emphasis on the vocals for sure. The vocalist screams at a few parts, I certainly didn't expect that (On second listen it's at the beginning too, oh well). There's a quick break one or two places that's pretty cool and I like it. Other than that though, it's all pretty typical and formulaic. Overall I'd have to say it's not bad, but not a lot stands out to put it above all the other acts out there either. No reason I wouldn't listen, but nothing there that makes me want to go research them more. 7/10

The Hobby - Serenadia

Starts with frenetic drumming, with heavy emphasis on cymbals, and a biting power-chord based guitar riff. It has a biting thrash quality to it, which is nice. The bass is simple, supporting the riff. Lead guitar enters on 12 seconds, again mimiccing the main riff. The band fades out, and the verse begins.

Just bass and vocals for the beginning of the verse. Very simple bass line, vocals are a little bit nasal for my liking, but adequate nonetheless. I can't make out much of what he's saying, and what I can make out seems meaningless. Still, the singing is decent and the melody isn't bad.

Both guitars enter around the 40 second mark, the rhythm guitar plays a chugging but rather clean pattern, while the lead guitar plays a couple of barely audible fills. Builds up to the chorus, the singer's voice cracks as it begins, it's all a bit Mars Volta at this stage. Some nice harmonised lead guitar finishes the chorus. I don't care much for the vocals at this point, though.

There's coda of this quite short song is in two parts. First there's a short, slow section, which is rather nice, before we build back to the chorus, only to come to an abrupt finish. Eeek, it's a bad recording, to be quite honest, I don't think it does the song justice. With that in mind, I'll give it a 6, subject to becoming 7 if recorded better.

I meant that in most of your recommendations, you tend to pick the same bands (Butch Walker, Izzy Stradlin, Val Emmich). There's nothing wrong in using the same bands, but try and vary them out a little bit, give the reviewers something new if you get me?

Izzy Stradlin - Parasite
Nice drumroll intro, although I think it's a little long. It jumps straight into the song with a very punky sound. The guitar riffs are quite high and fast, and the drumming is amazingly quick too. I like the vocals to this song too, they sound similar to Millencolin.

Around the 0:57 point, the solo kicks in. For such a short song, the solo does drown out a bit, and even carries on into the last verse. I like that actually, it gives the song a little variation and something to listen out for over a part of the song you have already heard.

I don't really know what to say for this. It's short (1:37 to be exact), and for that amount of time it did really well to keep me hooked. But I think they could've made it longer, it left me wanting to hear more like that. I loved the style of the music, even though it didn't particularly offer anything new. Overall it's a great punk rock song. Plain and simple.

Scary Kids Scaring Kids - The City Never Sleeps

Well I got a flyer about these guys at the show last night so I decided to give this a listen.

Starts out very ambient, and then the dums and guiatr come in. Shortly the vocals come in. I don't like them. I don't think his voice fits the music and the screaming isn't fantastic. Very driven and high energy music. A lot of it reminds me of Thursday actually for some reason. Definitely not what I expected when I saw Pop-Punk/Indie. Really I kinda enjoyed it up to the vocals though. I can't really give a fair assessment as is because it didn't appeal to me at all, but if they got a new vocalist I definitely might like them more.

Strung Out - lucifermotorarcade

This song starts with various effects being used, then the distorted guitar and drums kicking in. The drums follow a simple beat, and mainly chords are used on this track. A secong guitar picks out the melody. Shouty vocals accompany this high energy riff. This gets pretty catchy, but the vocals really spoil this song for me. As Vince said, This song was pretty decent until the vocals started, but this really isn't my type of music, so I don't think I can be a fair judge of this song.

Green Day - Dry Ice (3:44)

I'm a moderate Green Day fan, but I'm unfamiliar with their early material, so this should be interesting.

Song begins with a distorted guitar playing what sounds like picked open chords. Bass plays long sustained notes, beginning on the first beat of each bar in time with the drums. A bit of an Oasis vibe I think, the distorted open chords are a feature in their music too.

The drums begin a regular pattern, while the guitar and bass resume a straightforward power-chord pattern, all downstrokes, creating a wall of distortion. Vocals are doubled and quite low in the mix, I like the effect but I'd prefer if they were more prominent. The guitars seem to dominate without actually offering much, the vocals are much more interesting and should be the centre of the song.

Verse and chorus use the same chords, there's little to really distinguish them in that regard, but the vocal melody in this chorus is again the most interesting aspect. I still don't like the way the guitars and vocals sit together. After the second chorus there's a short guitar solo, which is very enjoyable, exhibiting a lead guitar skill I hadn't envisioned in Billie Joe. The band chugs away in the same manner as before. Repeat of verse and chorus again, and we fade out with feedback.

Good tune - not up to the standard of their latest I don't think, but a keeper nonetheless. 8/10.

Gilby Clarke - Cure Me... Or Kill Me...
I like the intro a lot actually, considering it sounds similar to a Metallica song, who I despise. The guitar riffs sound like a typical hard rock song, which is good I guess. The vocals come in, and it sounds like they are trying too hard to be your average metal band. The lyrics, the riffs, the way the song is sung. It sounds quite generic to be honest.

The chorus is a lot better, it has a little pop-punk edge to it considering what the song is like. The mini solo throughout the chorus is a nice touch as well.

The verse and chorus use the same structure and chords again, and once again I've fallen in love with the chorus thanks to the lead guitarist.

The bridge is quite nice as well. The main solo is enjoyable to listen to, but I must admit I was expecting a bit more from the lead guitarist. It sounds a little slow, and it doesn't really bring anything new to the song. It just seems like a way to put off playing the chorus again.

When the chorus comes around again, it lasts way too long. At least 4 times the chorus goes round I think, which could've easily been shortened.

Overall, I didn't mind the song. It's one of those songs which focus on the guitarist rather than anything else. The vocals seemed forced into being brody in the verses, and the drumming wasn't the most impressive I've ever heard. Hell, I could probably drum like this guy in this song. The guitar was pretty good, I thought the lead guitarist spent a little too long soloing his heart out, and that little gimmick got old after a while.

The plot to blow up the Eiffel Tower - For Marcus

Starts off a bit wierd, all the instruments playing and then goes into a cool bass line and then the vocals come in, they are ok, not very strong and shouted, it sounds ok.
Then it slows down a bit, which is a nice change and then it breaks down with a strong bass line and the girl singing is good. Good guitar work through the song. Then a sax solo comes in which i don't really like, but it's wuite a nice change. Then just as the song seem s to fade out to the end of the song, all the instruments and vocals start off as crazy and fast as possible.

I didn't really liuke it that much, i wouyldn't buy it, but it's not terrible.

Lars and the Bastards - Six Foot Five

Starts out with clicks, then gets right into it. It's got a catchy rhythm. The lyrics are somewhat ballad-like, talking about punx and skinheads doing stuff. I can't understand the lyrics too well. :p About 0:43, the chorus comes in. VERY catchy. "Skinhead! Roots making rock and roll, on parole!" Something like that. Right after the chorus comes the solo. After the solo, a breakdown-type thing. Chorus again. /dances. Overall it's a pretty good song. Typical stuff from Lars, and it was kind of hard to review becuase it was pretty simple.

I give it a 7/10.

The Wanteds - Can't Say No

OK, this song has alot of genres - I don't know what to expect.

Begins with a snare-based drum pattern. Soon clean loosely alternate-strummed guitar comes in. It's constant except for a couple of slight rhytmic variations. At the same time, the vocalist joins. This song doesn't piss about with intros. His voice is very breathy and soothing, I think he has a lisp. He sounds like he's gasping for breath, he may be drowning himself between lines. Bass joins after the fourth line/first verse with a jumpy root-based motif.

After the eight line, the second guitar joins, essentially doubling the first guitar - giving the song a bigger sound. The vocalist would obviously be overwhelmed on his own, so a second female voice doubles his vocals, which I like alot. I wish she was singing the whole song. At 1:15, the guitars drop out to make way for a synth, but the music is dominated by the bass and drums, which play a galloping rhythm in time with one another. The singer sings the verse over it, same as the beginning. Guitar enters again, and the earlier pattern repeats. He has distortion on his voice, I'm sure that's a recent addition. The bass is the best thing about this song, it's more interesting than everything else together. 2:30 - the girl is back, the piece needs her.

Song seems to pick up some volume, or at least some intensity. There's now an instrumental break of sorts, which consists of a repeated melody which I think is played on electric guitar(could be a synth either, it's mixed low.) The chorus returns, with the girl, before the man goes off on his own, trading lines with a second track of himself. This part works well I think. Continues like this and an abrupt finish.

Hmm, there were large parts of it I really didn't like. The band was a bit dull, as was the melody, and the song was far too long. But it did have redeeming features, which I pointed out. 4/10.

Pogues - Sick Bed Of Cúchulainn

Starts out with a quiet intro on what sounds to be a mandolin. It's a slow song. About 35 seconds in, you kind of expect guitars to come exploding in, but they don't. It sticks with just the accordion and mandolin and stuff playing. Sounds interesting. At 1:24 a little duet with the accordion and some whistling comes in, which I like a lot. Then it gets quiet again. Then kicks up again with the chorus, and ends with the whistling/accordion duet. It's a good song, but not exactly what I prefer to listen to. 6/10

Kill Your Idols - Words Without Actions (2:18)

I'm not familiar with any of this band's material, but I know of their reputation, so...

Drummer counts the band in and we're straight into the action. Heavy guitar riff, I think it's doubled, and I think I can make out some snare in there too, but very low. Drums enter after 4 bars. I can't make out the bass at all, I can only assume it's there.

After 8 bars, the singer enters. He's angry, and he's determined to be heard over the loud guitars. I don't know what he's saying, he's far from clear. The rhythm of the vocal line matches the guitar. There's two vocalists, or perhaps the same vocalist singing in two different styles, the second voice reminds me of Davey Havok. I don't like this mix, it does little for the song. Singers trade verses for a while, until there's a cadence and fade out.

Piece resumes with a bassline doubled by palm-muted guitar. This is the first time I've been able to make out the bass. Guitarist sticks a high note at the end of each bar, giving the riff a bit of a raggae feel. Not bad. Drums and vocals return, the music stays the same, before returning at reduced volume. The vocals are more prominent now, and it's an improvement. Return to the riff I spoke off and a gradual finish.

Hmm... it's not a bad song, but I have serious issues with the vocals and the recording itself. The second half saved the song. If it had continued as it had begun, it would have been a major letdown. As such, I'll give it 5/10.

Stevie Wonder - Supersticious

The song starts with a funky drumming pattern and after some seconds it enters the bass playing a funky line that sticks over every other instrument the whole song except the chorus. That's probably one of the catchiest bass lines ever. Later it enters the guitar and then stevie sings the verse, after a few verses we have some horns playing also and then it comes the chorus when you can hear the guitars and vocals most of all. Again the funky and cool bass line and the verse again with horns on the last half of it and the chorus straight after it. The horns are pretty good and then some kind of bridge where you can here a slight variation of the main riff. To the end of the song it's the instruments playing the verses but Stevie sings like if it was a chorus, not exactly but his singing is more melodic than in verses and he goes higher too. This is not the kind of music I use to listen too but this song is so great that I can't help but liking it.

8.5/10 because after some listenings it gets a bit tiring.

This is the first song i've heard by these, but i'm impressed.
It starts off with just the guitar playing a cool riff and then stops for a second and then carries on again but this time with the drums and bass, the vocals come in shortly
after, they are ok, quite shouty and chanty but very listenable. The verse is very simple, the guitar is playing simple power chords, the drums are simple and the singing is great. The chorus is more poopy and catchy and the vocalist sings a bit higher, the beggining riff starts agian which goes into the verse which seems more static and shouty, after the chorus again, a great breakdown occurs, where the bass becomes mre apparent and everything seem to slow down, the riff starts agin, while the vocalist is singing, and then goes into the chorus again for the last time.

Bad Religion - Suffer (1:47)

I saw Bad Religion at Warped Tour last year, and was exposed to their music quite a bit during that period, but I couldn't name one song I know. This is quite a short song, so I'm not sure how much I'll have to say...

Begins with bursts of distorted, but not heavy, guitar playing bright-ish chords. I'm not sure if that's a synth playing in the background, or another guitar, but it makes for a good sound. Drumming is quite frantic, but low in the mix, ditto for bass.

The drums come more to the fore in bar 7, just before the singer enters. He has a nice voice, though I'm still not convinced his voice fits the music so much. The vocal melody is strong, ascending and descending, a style I've noted in a few of their songs. Band continues as the intro for the first verse.

For the first part of the chorus, the guitar mimics the vocals(or vice versa) the powerchord matching the note the singer is on. It's difficult to make out the words the singer is singing, I can only decipher snippets. The singer's voice is doubled for the second part, which is very nice, and then there's a short guitar solo. I like the guitarist, he has a Chuck Berry-like style of soloing, similar to Steve Jones. Chorus then repeats to the end, and we finish on a perfect cadence(I think, my theory is rusty)

Really good song, though I'd have liked it to be longer and a bit more varied. 8/10.

American Hi-Fi - Maybe Won't Do (3:26)

Starts out with a catchy drum beat, and then comes in with some distorted bass and guitar on the off beats. The singer's voice sounds kind of staticky, and for that matter, the whole song does. The chorus is very poppy, and for some reason it kind of gets on my nerves. It immediately makes me think of a generic pop band. The bridge comes in at 2:30. There are background singers singing behind the lead singer, and the snare drum seems to be louder than all of the other music.

Ther's not much to the song. It's basically verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus. Very generic.

4/10. Not my type of music.

Lovedrug - Rock 'N' Roll
I was half-expecting some cheap NME-esque clone, but it started out quite nicely. Very strong vocals, a nice guitar riff that isn't too heavy, but not too soft either. The whole song, especially the chorus, reminded me of American Hi-Fi for some reason.

I liked the little lick inbetween the chorus/verse. The verse was almost a copy of the first one, which is fine.

At around 2:00, the bridge kicks in and it get's a hell of a lot quieter. I like the sudden shift in volume, it gives a bit more suspense and a bit more of a build-up to what's coming up. Although the singer's blurry vocals annoyed me at this point. It then goes straight to a clean palm-muted guitar and vocals, nothing else. A bit of a let-down, I was expecting something a little louder but that's OK

As a whole, the song didn't really have anything which wanted to reel me in and listen to more. It was a nice song, quite mellow. The vocalist's tone didn't really go with the whole feel of the song, but that wasn't much of a problem. I don't think I'd look into this band personally, but the song didn't put me off completely.

The Aquabats - Fashion Zombie

Starts off slowly with a very cool bass line and high screeching sound, and then everything kicks in and a cool, poppy guitar riff starts, then the background 'WHOA' come in, which is great, then the verse starts which is a very cool clean-ish ska style guitar plays over nice drums and bass, nice fills are always present. The run down is the same riff as at the beggining before the first verse and goes into the chorus, which has the whoas and everything is kicking in also with that riff. This pattern repeats itself again and then it slows down for a very cool, mysterious part, nice guitar work and vocals here, and goes into the ruindown and then the chorus again and then to the end.

Great song, may get into them.

The Dwarves - You Gotta Burn (3:45)

Begins with a snare drum/cymbal measure, with what sounds like finger-snaps, most likely done on a keyboard. Sounds like something from a gangster musical right now. Bass enters at the end of the 8th bar, with a short ascending figure, to ease the singer's entrance. He reminds me of Brian Setzer, the piece as a whole has a bit of a Stray Cats feel so far.

At the end of the first verse a guitar with a shimmering delay effect enters, as the bass had after the intro, seemingly building to something. Instead it goes dead, before exploding into a distorted bluesy riff. Reminds me of Jon Spencer/George Thorogood blues-rock than punk, but that doesn't take away from the song.

The chorus starts as the guitars crash in - "You Gotta Burn", the chorus is the guitar riff, reminds me of Seven Nation Army in that respect. Second verse is the same as the first except with various guitar parts. Second chorus has more singing, the singer adding various ad-libs between the main chorus lines.

Chorus slips straight into a slide guitar solo, which is Thorogood-esque, before fading back into the intro pattern. It has a 50's kind of feel to it, I get images of Crybaby starring Johnny Depp, I bet the singer has a quiff. Third verse same as the others, again over the intro pattern, before the chorus comes again. Chorus changes again, with the lead and background singers trading "You Gotta Burn"s, with the lead screaming by the end. Piece gradually fades out as chorus repeats...

This is a very good tune, I enjoyed it alot. 8/10.

Manic Street Preachers - Mausoleum (4:12)

Starts out with a tremolo effect on the guitar, then drums come in, then the bass. The guitar has a very simple rhythm. Three notes. Lyrics come in at 0:12. The singer's voice is kind of odd, but I like it in a way. Chorus comes in at 0:43. The singer sounds like he's rambling. He sings fast and it sounds like he doesn't take one breath. He's saying stuff over and over again. Another verse comes in after the chorus. Then the chorus again. Blah blah blah, it's basically the same as the last verse. Another chorus, which I like a lot. It's very catchy. Then a bridge thingy. A guy saying "I wanted to make it rub its face in its own vomit." Hmmm...Interesting. That's nice. A short outro thing, and then it's done. I didn't like this song too much, but it had a nice chorus. 5/10.

I have been meaning to listen to more Glassjaw, from the small amount I have heard they seemed like a top notch band but as you do I forgot/am too lazy to take another listen, but here we are. From the start it sounds like we are in for quite an
interesting song, then about 13 seconds into the song the vocals come in. The vocals don't really do much for me until the song comes to life about a minute in. The rest of the song switches between soft melodies and heavy coruses although not quite what I expected. About 3:20 through the vocalist turns in some crazy talking backed up by some solid bass. Not really my thang, but still worth a listen.

Johnny Cash - The Man Comes Around (4:26)

Not the first time I've heard this song. It was in the remake of Dawn of the Dead. :thumb: It starts out with Cash talking. Then an acoustic guitar comes in. Johnny Cash's voice sounds like he's so ancient, but yet so badass at the same time. There's a piano playing low notes in the background when "When the man, comes around" is sung, along with another acoustic. The song itself seems very emotional, but at the same time it's not. It's one of those songs that when you first hear it, you have to stop and listen to it and sit down and kind of think about it. There are a few more verses and choruses, then at the end the talking that was going on continues about the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

A VERY good song. I'm not a huge Johnny Cash fan, but I love this song. 9/10.

Poison The Well - The Realist
I've heard great things about this band, although this is the first song I've heard, so I was expecting a lot out of it. It starts out with a distorted bass intro, quite chilling actually and leaves you anticipating what's coming up next. It then builds up into the full band playing, and vocals being sung over the top. The chord structure is a little dark, sounds kinda cool. I really love the vocals too, I like singers who can scream as well, but choose to sing a lot more.

The breakdown is a great addition to the song. A little break from the darker side of the song, and it gets very cheery actually and slow. The song then goes back to the verse. Great transition from each of the 2 sections as well, nothing bad about how it goes form verse to chorus to verse.

Second breakdown is a lot faster and keeps with the loudness of the song. The vocalist screams most of it while the guitarist plays a fast riff and the drummer plays harder and faser. A really amazing addition to the verse, something to add more energy. It then goes back to the chorus, and gradually fades out. I think the fade out lasts way too long to be honest, but that's a minor glitch

Overall, and amazing song, and I would definately want to hear more from this band. The song has both fast and slow moments without losing the energy, the music is fantastically written and the vocals are perfect bothing screaming and singing.

Scary Kids Scaring Kids - The City Sleeps In Flames (4:00)

Starts out with a slow buildup of feedback. Then the drums and guitar kick in. Vocals come in at 0:29. The singer's voice reminds me a lot of Geoff Rickley of Thursday. The singer has a pretty good scream in the chorus. At about 1:23, the guitar comes in with a pretty cool run. At about 2:20, there's a slower breakdown type thing. I really like the guitars in this song, and the drums are respectable too. I suck at writing these reviews and I can't think of anything creative to say. The song is alright. I pointed out most of the things that I liked, but the singer sounding similar to Geoff Rickley kind of turns me away from the band. It's a good song, but not what I was expecting. 6/10.

System Of A Down - Revenga (3:48)

Song begins with a lightly played clean guitar chord pattern, sustained, and a lone snare drum beat. Soon the lead guitar slides in and begins to play a heavily distorted, but muted, rhythmic patterns. It has a galloping rhythm to it and continues into the verse, with Daron giving us various tasters of unmuted sections. Despite the vocals the song is still rhythmically-based, even the rhythm section is overborn by the guitar. Serj's vocals mimic the guitar part, very quick and indecipherable.

The chorus gives the impression of a slower section, but really the guitar has just eased off. Serj sings about making babies, as his vocals are doubled by Daron's higher voice. The final, sweetest part, is the scene of the return to original riff. Verse/chorus repeat and then we move into a bridge, which utilises the same chords as the intro. Daron sings lead for the bridge, doubled by Serj, and then the piece moves into a lead guitar break, which involves much alternate picking around a repeated theme. The second part of the solo has some nice choral vocals, before we return to the chorus again, and then the verse pattern, though slightly modifiied. This brings is to the finish.

Really good song, as all SOAD songs I've heard are, I'll definitely listen to it more. 9/10.

Guns N Roses - Shadow Of Your Love (2:43)

Starts out with Axl yelling "Wake up! It's time to play!" and then goes right into a fast guitar riff. The song is very fast, and it almost sounds punk. Definitely not what I was expecting this song to be. It has the same nanananananananana thing that's in Welcome To The Jungle. Axl's vocals are pretty fast, and the chorus consists of him yelling "In the shadow of your love" x4. A guitar solo comes in at about 1:45. Pretty good. Then straight back into the lyrics. It's a pretty good song. Very different from other GNR that I've heard. Axl's vocals somewhat turn me away from the band as I can't stand them. 7/10.

Love Drug - Spiders

The song starts with the singer and an acoustic playing simple chord progressions. About 55 seconds through, the drums and other instruments come in, and the pace is picked up and it's muich louder now. The singing is nice, not too high or squeaky, but nice. The other guitar palys nice notes through it building up for the chorus, which is farely simple. A solo comes in which is quite low, but sounds nice, not hing specail, not very hard, but goes on for a decent amount of tme. Nice variety in the tempo of the song. The sng ends with the guitar playing single strummed chords slowly and then he sings to fade.

I'll give it a 6 as it's not my type of thing tbh.

Bouncing Souls - Manthem
It starts out with a funky drum and bass intro, and gradually gets into the song. It has a very loud punky theme to it, which is really nice as well. The chords are pretty simple, but most are in pop-punk

When the singing comes in, the song is very cheery and feel-good, it is literally an anthem. I think Dexter Holland sings in it as well, not sure though. If it isn't, he sure sounds like him. When the "oi" part comes in, seems like a bit of filler but goes nicely with the song

After the second verse, the "oi" part is mixed with the chorus, it makes it really fun to listen to and just makes me want to jump around. The lyrics are your average "have fun" anthem type lyrics, and they just make the song feel that much better

Overall, I think it was great, and way up there with pop-punk anthems. The music was fitting, the lyrics were fun and the song overall had a feel-good factor to it. I didn't even notice it went on for 3 minutes with just 2 verses and 2 chorus', but they pulled it off well.

Finch - Insomniatic Meat

Well, this is quite a wierd song, quite powerful and deep.
It starts off with some wierd sounds, then a clean guitar riff comes in, and it then distorts and the vocals come in, quite nice, the music is reasonably slow, but heavy.
Then a breakdown comes in with a different singer i think, and he shouts/screams some lyrics. The music gets heavier and faster here. It then slows down again, and some softer vocals come in for a second and then it goes back to normal, the heavy guitar and music and the singing carries on, it the softens again, to being very quite, it then builds up into the chorus, which is quite melodic.

The music and vocals become wierd agian, and he sings as though he is getting suffocated or something to that effect. Screaming comes in and out. Sow guitar strokes bring it back into the chorus again. Then some backing vocals come i and he starts screaming, i really like this part of the song, it sounds really powerful. He does this until the end.
The outro is just the guitar and soem electronical instrument playing out to fade, with wierd sounds with it.

I give it a 7/10.

Rise Against - Last Chance Blueprint
Wow, funny intro. I rather liked the little rant into the song, and the music was slow enough to fit it, I guess. It then cuts straight into the full band and vocals. The pace is fast and carries a lot of energy, and the bassline is the main highlight as it varies a lot throughout the song. Something that hardly ever happens in pop-punk/punk music nowadays

About 1:20, there's a breakdown where the drums are the main focus. There is a tiny guitar melody, and then vocals come in. It goes well, and the drums keep the momentum that they had from the start of the song. Then it cuts straight into the full band again for like 10 seconds, and then it ends.

Overall, it's short like the other Rise Against song I did, but again they have a great sound and it fits perfectly with the punk genre. The vocals aren't a strongpoint of the music, but the bass certainly made up for that

Starts with a guitar bit then the whole band kicks in. Pretty fast and enegrgetic. Then the singer starts. Can't actually tell what he's saying, but it sounds cool. The fast music and gegeranally fast tempo continues. Reminds me of something The Offspring would do before they sucked.

Overall, it's a pretty badass song. A great example of Pop-Punk to play to the average Green Day/Blink-182 fan ;)

Bright Eyes - Waste of Paint (6:29)

I've never really liked Bright Eyes, as I've only heard a few songs, so I decided to give this one a listen.

Starts out with an acoustic guitar. And it's the same throughout. There isn't much to review, so I'll go through what he talks about in the verses.

Verse one is about one of Oberst's friends that draws him a picture. Oberst tells him that it's really good but his friend denies and says that nothing beautiful could ever come from him. Second verse is about a woman that is in love with a man. Then she finds out that the man had lied to her, then she decides to spend the rest of her life alone. Third verse is about Oberst's brother getting drunk and driving, and he gets pulled over. Then he tries to get out of it, but the cop can't let him go.

Alright, there's a bunch more verses that all go on the same track. I guess I'm still not a Bright Eyes fan.

Strike Anywhere - Aluminium Union

Starts strong, with music thtat sounds like everything else on Exit English. It's pretty cool. The vocalist, although I find it hard again to decipher the lyrics, does a good job, combining the normal 'hardcore/punk rock' vocals with this emotional wail that makes it actually seem that he is passionate about whatever he is on about. The music is pretty cool aswell, but it's pretty samey when listened to alongside everything else on the album. But, a solid song overall, and well worth listening to.

Our Lady Peace - Innocent
It starts out with a slow drum beat, kinda distorted. Then the guitar and vocals come in. The vocals are quite strong, and the melody is nice and fitting to the slow feel of the song.

When the song goes into the full band, it doesn't really pick up momentum or anything. It kinda just drags on. The bass adds nothing new to the mix either

The second verse is OK. The vocalist's voice gets a little higher, which shows his emotion for the lyrics. The guitar picks up a new riff, a little heavier. It still feels like it's dragging out, and just building up to something not happening yet

The bridge again has the same drum beat, the same guitar melody, the same bassline. There's nothing new about this song now, it's been playing for 2 minutes and it's all the same! It then cuts into the chorus again. The lyrics are even repetitive now

Overall, I didn't like this song. It had a good and decent promise at the start, and it feels like it's building up to a real rock song. But it just disappoints. 3 minutes of the same riffs and beats, it's not that great to listen to. This might be one of the few MP3s I delete

Motion City Soundtrack - Hangman

Starts of with some feeback and stuff, which slowly develops into a tune. Then the drum beat comes in , and the singer starts. His voice is OK, would be better without the excess effects and other stuff they've done to it. Sounds like a typical pop-punk tune, with some cool effects in it. There's a quiet bit later on, with the type of vocal effects that I think work well, then it goes back to how it was before. The production isn't very good, and they should've thought of a better hook. The actual song is good though, in some parts.

Agent Orange - Everything Turns Grey (2:00)

Short song, so pardon the short review.

Begings with some tasty palm muted guitar, I like the descending riff pattern, very nice. Reminds me of the Wildhearts' Greetings From ****sville. The guitars then resolve to a chugging powerchord pattern. I like the guitar tone, it has plenty of bite.

Vocals enter at 0:15 - they're weak. They're badly recorded(in my opinion) and badly mixed, and the vocal melody is just bland. He reminds me of Bad Religion's singer, but he just bores me. This is very disappointing, as the music is great.

There's plenty of good guitar moments - the descending muted riff returns after the chorus, and there's a very tasty solo leading into the outro chorus. There's also some nice backing vocals on the chorus, but the chorus itself is just weak. 4/10 - and that's only for the guitar.

Guns N' Roses - Rocket Queen
I'm not a huge fan, but I'll try out new music. It starts out with a nice steady tempo, the drum fill is simple and the guitar in the background is typical GNR from what I've heard. I like the riff when it builds up and then stops.

When the vocals come in, nothing really changes in the music, which is fine because I rather like the riffs and the drumbeats. The singing is great, and the usual GNR.

In the chorus, it sounds like they use effects on the vocals, and it sounds kinda funny. It doesn't sound professional at all. Then the bridge comes up, that adds a little bit of change to the song. The riff from the start it used again, and then changed while the solo plays over the top. You can hear moans every now and again, and it just sounds like a huge joke. Still really amazing music though

Around 3:30, the song takes a dramatic change. The drumming slows down and the guitar riff changes a lot, and it adds another nice mix to the song. Bearing in mind it's 6 minutes long, that's always good in long songs. The tempo dramtically changes, and so does the tone. It has a lot more melodic feel to it.

It slowly builds up in heaviness for about 2 minutes into another solo being played over the vocals just randomly saying "No" over and over. It's a great way to finish the song with a huge build up to the solo. This solo is a lot better than the one in the first bridge, and adds a little bit of a festive feel to it actually

Overall, I really liked this song. This is how a typical hard rock song should sound like I my opinion. Over-the-top vocals mixed with hard-hitting rhythm guitars, not to fast drumming and one of the best lead guitarists in rock playing 2 solos in a song. Superb

Bright Eyes - Poison Oak

My first Bright Eyes song i've heard, and it's ok.
It starts off very slowly and quitley with just acoustic guitar and soft bass it think, then the vocalist starts to sing, very softly, nice slow chord progressions, this goes on for a while, until about 2:38 when all the music comes in, the msuci is very nice, drums, and some wierd background music accompany the rest, it then goes slow agian, and acoustic for a short while before going back into the full music part, the outro is the acoustic guitar softly playing into fade.

Meh, 4/10 because i've heard better slow/acoustic stuff, and it's not my cup of tea...

Rancid - 1998 (2:45)

I only have one Rancid album, Indestructible(?), and have heard no other song of theirs, so I'm not sure what to expect.

Begins with a powerchord stab and a funky bassline, reminds me of the RHCP just for a moment, before the punk guitar returns again. The guitar tone is nice and distorted, I like it. Sounds like they just kicked a hole in the amp and decided to play on regardless. Awesome. As the singer enters half-singing, half-rapping, the lead guitar just wails on one note, seemingly biding its time.

I like the singer, he sounds very comfortable for lack of a better word, songwriting is also very good. As the second verse progresses, the lead guitar plays an understated riff which compliments the rhythm guitar and vocals nicely. Bass seems to have disappeared, it's mixed way down at points, only returning for the chorus. Perhaps it's just my speakers, but I feel the bass could do with a higher priority in the mix.

That said, the first verse after the chorus is bass-driven, and it sounds really good. The chorus is something about "Sydney in the USA." I'm not quite sure what he's talking about, but it sounds like fun so I'll allow it. The chorus fades to a nice muted guitar riff. The lead guitar is very competent throughout. Full marks.

The second chorus is followed by a short guitar solo, which leads to a bass solo and a triumphant "yeeeeahhh". Good stuff, melodically very strong on all fronts. Song fades out to another repeat of the chorus, ending on a final powerchord.

Good tune. Well-written, well-recorded, good musicianship. No real complaints aside from my comment about the bass. 8/10.

Butch Walker - Alicia Amesia

Hahaha, cool intro. Ba-tadatadaboomboom-BURN! Nice riff as well, even though that second guitar is kind of annoying. Lyrics seem typical pop-punk. That "she doesn't know my name" bit is really cool.

Chorus is pretty catchy- especially because the same guitar line as the intro is used. The guitar solo seems a bit out of place though- and so does the little bit of French talking. From there until the end the song is good again though.

Love Like...Electrocution - With Horses in Her Eyes She Spat Like a Wild Cat

It starts off very slow, just a single guitar playing a simple melody. You can feel it's going to build up to something, and then the full band comes in. The drum beat is very impressive to me, and is overlapped with a quite standard chord structure. There are 2 vocalists; one singer and one screamer. Neither are that good in their field, but together they sound very good and are a nice addiction to the song

Later on they both sing/scream over the top of each other, which kind of ruins it for me. The singer has a chance to show his vocal skills, and I'm treated to one of the girliest screamers in the genre. The music isn't particularly amazing either, but it does it's job of keeps a fast and heavy feel to the song. I suppose in screamo, the vocals are the major emphasis

I didn't particularly like this one. The drumming was the thing that impressed me the most, and considering it's only about 1:13, he pulled out some good stuff. The guitar riffs were quite simple, nothing majorly great or hard about some of the licks. But the vocals are what make screamo songs in my eyes, and they just didn't cut it.

Placebo - This Picture (3:34)

Begins with a quick, poppy, bass riff - triplets, one note per measure. Drums are standard 4/4 fare, setting itself up to be a nice punky pop song. The singer begins to speak about the image he holds of the ashtray girl etc. Pretty arty stuff. He's morose, asking us what's wrong with the picture.

Farewell the Ashtray Girl. He begins to sing, he has a shaky voice, probably intentionally. It has character, I like. He's probably bisexual. Two guitars enter with his singing, one playing a mildly distorted gothy riff, the other playing clean chords. Good stuff, good pop song.

The chorus offers the singer extending himself somewhat, hitting higher notes. Both guitars are now distorted, the rhythm guitar plays straight powerchords, while the lead plays a gorgeous melody, which compliments the vocal melody very nicely, reminiscent of the chorus to Sweet Child O' Mine.

The second chorus is similar, though the rhythm guitar is cleaner and the lead riff is lower, this is true of all further choruses. Shame, perhaps, but it still sounds great. The second chorus leads to a heavier bridge, which utilises a higher version of the lead riff. This is very good stuff, even the squealy stuff in the background.

Great pop tune, I've been converted. 9/10.

AFI - Death Of Seasons
This song has a very clam intro until the second guitars come in, the vocals start and the drum makes a slow beat. It's an impressive introduction to the song I think, and reels you into the full thing

When the verses starts, Davey's voice is very deep and powerful, and put alongside the heavy fierce guitar riffs and drumming, it makes for a good verse as well. I also loved the backing vocals in the verses as well.

When the chorus comes up, his voice goes back to the regular Davey we all know. I think it works well, since that is the only real thing that differates the verses and chorus'. The guitar chords are standard power chords, and are produced nicely

Then the breakdown. This is possibly the only AFI song with a dance feel to it, and to be honest, I like it. It isn't too dancy, but it brings a new "do do do do" feel to the song. The effects used in the breakdown work nicely for the song.

After another verse and chorus, we get the bridge. Here's where it slows down in tempo but has that same AFI sound to it. The palm-muted riff is wonderful alongside the drumming and Davey's voice. When it all kicks into full heavy band again, it sounds OK. I don't think it particular brings anything new to the song, but that's just me

It then slows down again, and you just hear violins with Davey's voice being echoed over the top. I think the way they ended this song is a little to pretencious, and it just doesn't feel like a good ending to me.

Overall, it's a decent song. It is by no means the best AFI song, nor the best on the record, but it's not bad.

Unwritten Law - F.I.G.H.T. (Punk Rock)

Starts off with very heavy and distorted guitar, it sounds liek a nu-metal type of sound, whcih is odd, the drums soon come in, then all the drums are palying full pelt, everything then slows down and the vocals come in and wierd synth type music is played in the background and the guitar every so often plays a chord, then the guitar comes ina ll guns firing again, and some chanting plays, which is effective and nicely done, it goes back to the verse as normal and then back to the chanting.
The chorus then starts, it's possibly the strongest part of the song, the guitar, drums and bass is fast and nice chord progressiins are playing, then some chanting plays at the end of it, it's lilke little girls are chanting it, ths is quite a wierd part, kinda eery...I like it.
The vocals are very soft in the chorus and slightly harsher i the chorus, this repeats, and then the girls chanting happens again, with a dance type tune over the top, the heavy guitar is still going, back to the chorus a few times, with some changes until the end, this is a very fast, up-beat part which seems to keep gaining energy as it goes on. It finishes with the same riff as which the song starts on.

It was ok, the verse was different to what i thought it would be after hearing the opening chords, i thought it would have been much heavier, the chanting over the top is what makes the song i think, and it would have been a poor, bland song without it...

Songs coming soon...

Alkaline Trio - Every Thug Needs A Lady

This song starts off with a somewhat simple yet horribly catchy intro, and then goes straight into the verse. There's little to no guitar in the verse, as the verse is carried by a simple bassline and vocals. I love Dan's voice, and this song is no exception. You can tell right away that this is one of Alkaline Trio's more upbeat songs, both from the catchy as hell melody, and the love song-esque lyrics. The chorus is one of the stronger points to this song, again, with nothing to complicated musically, but it still manages to sound great. The outro is quite similar to the intro.

All in all, a great song. My review doesn't come close to doing it justice.

Brand New - Am I Wrong

First of all, Brand New is one of my favourite bands, so thank you for uploading this song :)
Starts of with an upbeat kind of thoughtful drum beat and guitar part. The bass also flows gently, with Jesse singing. He needs to be louder, because the actual music is really good.I can imagine this is the kind of thing tey'd play on a teen drama. You can easily tell that this is from early in their career, but it's still good. The same music basically continues throughout the whole song, and Jesse's vocals become a little more notable.

Mad Caddies - Good Intentions
It starts out with a nice acoustic riff and vocals laid over the top. When the drums come in, it gets a little bit of a country feel to it, and it sounds really nice actually. Very relaxing and cheery. Then the whole band comes in, and it still keeps that country feel but a little more electric, and I think that works very well

In the chorus, the trumpet comes in slightly along with the rest of the band, and it sounds kinda nice. I think trumpet deserved a little more time in the chorus, but whatever. Also, the slowed down tempo of the chorus adds a bit of mixture to the song.

The verse plays again and the chorus again, and then there's a bridge which emphasises more on the trumpet again. I like this part, it is more upbeat than the chorus, but the trumpet adds that little more energy to it as well. It plays this until the song finishes

Overall, it's a great song. It has a happy feel to the song even with the Western feel, and the song manages to keep the energy flowing through the song even with tempo changes.
