Reggie And The Full Effect - Get Well Soon

Starts out with a cool synth diddy, then guitar comes in. Very catchy rhythm, with some nice drums. I'm liking the synth going on in the background during the verses. It has a nice chorus, once again very catchy. The vocals remind me of Action Action's. They sound very similar. Good breakdown, guitar slows down and synth keeps playing same rhythm. Another chorus, then the song fades out. Good song, I need to start listening to RATFE more often. Wow, I didn't write that much. :upset:

Bad Religion - Sanity

I don't have no control so i haven't heard this yet, being a huge Bad Religion fan I chose this.
It starts off with a slow palm muted guitar riff, which picks up a bit of speed and then slows again, the vocals come in and it plays for a while then the vocals stop and full guitar chords are played, it does this for a few times. Gregs vocals are as great as ever and the lyrics are awesome.
The chorus is very catchy, and is also very simple, will be humming this for weeks. Once finished the plam muted chords start agon for a bit until a solo kicks in. Short but sweet.
Back into the verse, same pattern as before, the song is very dark and i love it.
The harmonies come in here, which is amazing, the chorus is played again.
a solo is then played over the chords to the verse, and then the chorus starts with solo and back gorund harmonies singing, a great finish to a great song, it sounds as though it was all building up to it.
I prefer slower bad religion songs like this and inner logic etc..This song was amazing, the riff was simple yet brilliant, the songing was superb and everything was spot on.

The piano starting out is kind of a nice thing to be away from guitar solos and power chords, The main singer is a little whiny and annoying, but the guitar and bass parts add to the song. The drummer saves the song IMO. It doesn't sound like its put together very well, it seems to need mixing. Then ant the end, they throw in a synth which isn't a good idea IMO

Rancid - Burn
The song starts out with a very raw feel to it. It feels cheaply made, something I actually really like in pop-punk/punk songs. The verse is kind of quiet actually until the joint vocals come in. I like that part a lot, the bassline sounds very nice and Tim's vocals are standard Rancid

The chorus was disappointing to me. I know Rancid can get away with completely repetitive lines, but still it feels like they didn't put much effort into it and gave it one cliché line.

When the verse kicks in, what do we find? The same lines from the first verse. The only thing that kept me from falling asleep from this was the little guitar melody after the verse, which is quite good. Then it builds up a little, and heads straight into the chorus with just a bassline and drums, then guitar comes in. Then we get the verse again.

In the end, this is one of the worst Rancid songs I have ever heard. I know they are one of the biggest punk bands to grace my ears, but this is a horrible protest song with about 3 sentences in total. The music again wasn't up to Rancid's potential, and often left me bored and hoping, no, praying something good was coming. Sadly, I was let down by them

The Quiet Screaming by The Legion Of Doom

8/10.

The beginning fits quite well, adds a more "emotional" feeling to it. I like. The beginning of the verse is overpowered by Chris Carabba, the only part I dont like that much. The second half of the first with Brand New is basically the same, and I still love it. The first chorus is also basically the same, and I still love it. The second "verse" has the quiet theme going on with it, which is great, and fits well with the song. It also leads up into the explosion of an outro, which is my favorite part of the song. I've heard the SF/TBS mix of these guys and they seem promising.

Check this out: They're a local band from my area, very amazing. They just made a video which should hopefully find its way onto MTV2/FUSE.

I can't believe I am giving up Cartel for this!

Blessings and Burdens - Never Bled Like This
It starts out with feedback, then goes straight to the full band. I can't say I'm a fan to be honest. The music sounds messy although the drumming is really good (Pretty much the only thing that is in hardcore bands). The vocals are horrible really. I can't stand bands which just scream.

Later, it slows down a little, and the guitar work gets a little more technical. Sadly, this is ruined by the vocals again.

Then it slows down majorly to a clean guitar and the bass drum playing. Now there's singing, which is actually quite good. I liked this part of the song, it gives it a much needed melodic feel. The lead guitar sounds amazing over the clean guitar. The singer's voice is incredibly strong as he shows.

The song then builds back into the full hardcore band with a screaming vocals which change to singing later. I think this sounds really great as well, the music is fantastic and is the perfect borderline between pop-punky riffs and over-distorted hardcore riffs.

About 3:43, the song changes again, this time with a distorted riff playing. Drums come in, and the song heads back into the dark mood that was present from the start of the song. I liked this bit, the music managed to make the screaming much more meaningful and not as messy as when the song started.

Overall, I misjudged this straight away. What began as another pathetic attempt at a "hardcore screamo" clone transformed into a band which showed a melodic side and then managed to pull off the screamo part much better. I liked this song actually, it had a lot of different sides to it and I liked the fact that it wasn't simply verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus.

The intro is good the singer is a little too breathy for me. The guitars are great. The music is good, I don't like the singer too much, but once he starts to sing instead of whisper he's ok. The melodics of the voice are good, but when he whispers I don't like it. The instruments are all very good. Then he starts to scream. which completely feels unneeded, and it completely ruins it for me. Overall this is an ok song.

Grateful meant that you didn't put that much effort into the review. It seems like you didn't describe the song, and for a 5 minute song, you could at least give details about different parts of the song. You know, parts you liked and disliked, what made them good and what could make them better?

Anyway, just some thoughts

Holy crap when did Grateful get his 2001 status!

Considering you managed to download and review a 5 minute song in exactly 5 minutes, I'd go out on a limb and say that you put next to no effort into your review. This game functions because people take the time and energy to listen to and review songs well. Your review did no justice to Kif's before, and the review of your song will probably be far better than yours warranted. Did you even listen to the entire track?

Holy crap when did Grateful get his 2001 status!

Over It - Siren On The 101

Starts off with a faint guitar riff and then kicks right into singing. It is a typical pop punk song throught the frist verse. It picks up for the chorus. The chorus is more enjoyable then the verse. Then another verse like the first, then the chorus again. Tehn it brakes down w/ a different singer and a faint guitar riff. Then it kicks in a little harder then the rest of the song. There is a nice little drum fill and then it slows down. The lead singer sings w/ just guitar and a faint violin playing. Then it goes into the chorus once again. It ends with a snare drum fill and the singer saying "Let me go!"

Armor for Sleep - Dream to Make Believe

Well people talk about this band a bit, but I've never heard any of their stuff, so I have kinda high expectations, we'll see how it's met ;)

Starts out laid back for about 2 measures, then distortion comes on, same riff again. Singer sounds a little bit like the guy from Thursday I think, but not as good. In fact this sounds pretty similar to Thursday to me as far as it all goes. Not as good though imo.

I actually don't like the singer that much, he's not a bad singer, but his voice just isn't quite right I don't think. It's a little bit on the generic side, but so is most of this style of music, so that's ok. I think I'd listen to this with a different vocalist, but the current one isn't my style really.

There was some depth in the music, but it could have done more with vocal harmonies. I also couldn't really hear the bass, it could be mixed higher. Drums and guitar were good and fit the style fine.

Rcommendations coming.

Five Iron Frenzy - Cool Enough For You

The song starts with some pretty cool horns, and after the intro it comes an also cool bass line with the usual skankin guitar around there. So the vocals enter not much later. I don't really like the vocals, but they're not bad. The song goes on with the same bass line, vocals and the horns in a repeated verse thing, and then a chorus when vocals and horns change a bit. The song goes on like this until it suddenly stops. Then the guitar enters palm muting, followed by the bass and then the horns. Until then I thought...It says ska/punk, when is punk coming here? And then the guitar kicks in with the distortion and the bass line changes while the vocals go on a catchy lalalala. It is a good song, but I've heard much better ska songs. Overall... 7.5/10

The Filaments-Bastard Coppers
The intro is nice. I like how it starts with everyone playing, then just the cymbal tap and the very nice horns. That continues for two measures, I believe. The singer reminds me very much of the lead singer for the Descendents. I think the ska guitar rythm is cool. The verse makes me want to dance. The refrain is alright, not my favorite. They could use more words for the refrain, instead of just Bastard Coppers. But the horns in this song are very good. The little solo/bridge is cool. I would want to learn it on guitar. The part where they just say **** the pigs is cool. It reminds me of when everyone would just start screaming it at the top of their lungs. Overall I like this song. Its reminiscent of two-tone ska and street punk, like Albert said. I really like the drum beat, it reminds me of a jazzish beat. I would give it a 8/10.

Is that a good review? If so, recommendations coming soon.

Little Mojo - Tripping Fantastic (5:00)

My research has imformed me that this is an unsigned duo who have been compared with Jason Mraz. This comes as no surprise, as Mraz was the first thing that came to mind when I heard the acoustic opening and the soft half-rapped vocals that succeeded it.

The guitar playing is very tight - a repetitive partly muted bass note/chord motif, which again recalls Jason Mraz or Dave Matthews. The first vocalist initially remind me of Jason Mraz, but also of Justin Timberlake at times. The second vocalist (Nicky J.?) is a straight-up rapper. His voice is monotonous, his parts are entirely rhythm based.

The lyrics are gibberish, something about a mojo, but nobody cares. The chorus is fun and very catchy. The drums and synth compliment the mood very nicely. These guys don't take themselves too seriously. There's a cool drum-oriented breakdown before the song continues in the vain of Jason Mraz, with the "yeah yeah yeah"s, before reverting to a short rap and fading out.

Very catchy tune. The sound wasn't highly original, like I said it reminded me of other artists, but it was certainly inventive and a break from the hip-hop norm. Very nice tune - 7/10.

Butch Walker - Alicia Amnesia

It starts off with some drums, then a heavy, funky guitar riff come in. when the vocals come in, chunky palm muted chords play. The vocals are very cool imo, something different, quite rough. The run down is more melodic, and the singing is less rough. The guitar is playing slow chords over the instruments. Then just before the chorus, is a quiet, palm muted chords playing over him whispering, probably my favourite part of the song, it builds up the chorus well. Then the chorus kicks in and it’s quite fast, loud and distorted. With very catchy lyrics, i like it.The verse plays again, same order. Until a solo comes in, with funky music playing in the background, it’s nothing too hard but nice anyway. It slows down, and goes quite for a second and then the chorus starts again. Then a great echoey effect takes place with lots of different voices singing, and then the end of the chorus is repeated over until the end.

Overall, i loved the song, it kept me listneing and wasn't too predictable, the vocals were really great, and it was the first song i've heard from him/them.

ok The opening guitaars are nice and set the song well. I like this guys vocals better than the other Alk3 guy. The drums in the background keep the song going. The guitar keeps the beat, and the harmonies are great. When it breaks and has just the lyrics is a nice touch, then the lead back to the song is good too. The guitar parts between the verses are fun to listen to. The lyrics fit nicely.

The song seemas a little repetitive in the end, it seems its the same guitar and other parts, but then it breaks to a guitar lead underneath lyrics. Then the finishing music closes the song very well.

Overall it isn't the best Alkaline Trio song, but it is a very fun song to listen to.

Two of the mp3's don't work, something about license migration, so I went with this one.

Daniel Lioneye- The King of Rock & Roll

Begins with the sound of motor engines rumbling, joined by a drum roll which resolves to a stright beat, before a synthesised guitar riff comes in. Reminds me of the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, then the vocals come in to confirm I was right. The echoed effect on the vocals is very cool, but the vocals are crap.

The verse follows a familiar pattern - a call/response pattern between the vocalist and the band. It sounds fine, but then again it's one of those patterns that rarely fails. The lyrics are awful, him threatening to "give us what we want" or some bull like that. I wish he'd shut up.

The chorus sees this man who is apparently struggling to breathe announce he's the "king of rock n' roll", and I don't doubt it for a second. I bet he dresses like Elvis too... twat. There's a rather tasty twin lead guitar bit after the chorus which continues through the rest of the song. I like this alot, but unfortunately the singer returns and drowns them out. The song fades to a horrible mess of lead guitar wanking, police sirens and that guy.

Ick. 2/10 on account of the guitar playing.

Manic Street Preachers - Faster
It begins a very odd intro. Someone talking quite quitely and then another noise, then it quickly rushes into the full song. I like the way it starts, and when the vocals kick in, it sounds a lot more hectic. The vocals aren't too amazing, they sound good in places I suppose.

The chorus is very good with a nice guitar melody and the fast-paced drumming track. Again, I'd say the only thing that ruins this is the vocals. After this, it goes into a "pre-verse" part. The guitar in the verse sounds weird, very old, and kinda creeped me out.

Then there's another verse and chorus. They flow together very well, and the song keeps it's energy up all the way through. It then heads into a bridge. The solo is really great for a rock band like this, and is long enough to keep me entertained.

Overall, I liked this song a lot. There was a lot of variety in the music, and the drumming and guitar riffs flowed together fantastically. The only thing that ruined it was the vocals, which sounded quite bad at some places (Especially the chorus).

7/10, would've been 8/10 but the vocals took it down 1

Jack's Mannequin - I'm Ready
Starts out with spoken words “And today was a day just like any other,” followed by a piano, which leads immediately into the first verse. The vocals are strong and fit well with the piano piece. The song speeds up a bit, and becomes more upbeat, when it hits the chorus. At around 2:30, another spoken piece enters into the background. The spoken words blend in with the singers voice when it resumes. The speaking adds to the impact of the song, because the words are very powerful. The song ends with repetition of the words “I’m Ready”, followed by a short piano outro.

Overall, I thought the song was pretty amazing. The vocals and piano flowed effortlessly throughout the whole song. It is a great example of an excellent piano-rock song, although that is to be expected from a man as talented as Andrew McMahon. 9/10

Wow, it's been too long in my opinion. This is a great thread and it's a shame it isn't as utilized as it should be. Still, it's back now much to my approval :D

Onto the song. It kicks in straight away with a catchy palm-muted and heavy riff, which leads into the full band. The vocals catch my attention, sounding distorted and loud. It works well against the gritty feel of the music, and sends you into the full song. The 2 guitars sound great together, although at some bits one does seem very quiet.

Into the chorus, it sounds very radio-friendly and similar to lots of bands around today. The backing vocals add a bit of depth to it, but it doesn't jump out. That being said, it doesn't need to when the chorus sounds great as it is.

One thing that puts me off is it's hard to tell when the chorus begins and the verse ends. The music sounds similar all throughout, with no real lead-ins to each other, and the vocals don't differate at all either. The bridge is the most noticable part of the song, using a high melody over a palm-muted riff. It works very well as 2 vocalist part lay over each other, and backing vocals bring them out more. It takes a long time to finish though haha.

Overall, an impressive song I think. The music wasn't too original, but fitted with the vocals very well. It is hard to tell parts of the song apart though, which is probably my only gripe about it.

My Awesome Compilation - You Need Discipline

Ok, so this song starts off with feedback from the guitar then the drums kick in with the cymbals then all the instruments blast in, the guitar riff is pretty boring i think but the verse then comes in really smoothly and the voclas come in, he sounds good, nice to hear a brit for once :p, after he sings for a while over the full distorted guitar he says the line 'You need Discipline' the riff comes in again with no vocals, i like this part, a drum roll comes in to the chorus which is quite nice, good mix of two vocalists throughout the song, but the chorus is very short...
Then a part where the guitar plays a very simple solo part and the voclas come in again, with nice background vocals, reminiscent of TBS, kinda like the end of Your so last summer the chorus is played a few times and it ends...

Overall, i didn't find the song catchy, i dooubt i will listen to it again, and it seemed really generic and boring.
The chorus was the strong point even though it was too short
It wasn't horrible but it wasn't interesting either...

Adolescents - Creatures
Begins straight into the song, with vocals and music starting almost immediately. I don't like that style, but I suppose it would sound better with the whole album. Seen as though this song is only about 2 minutes long, the verses are short and sweet, and the gritty vocals fit with the bursts of distortion.

The chorus is pretty standard, and in general just seems like a catchy line that fits the song's nature. I like it, and it sounds energetic for a punk song. The message of the song is quite self-explanitory, and works nicely against the loud music.

7/10, a good punk song but the beginning ruined it a little for me.

Bullet For My Valentine - Four Words (To Choke Upon)

I've been out of the reviews game for a while, I hope I still have it. I've no background knowledge of this band, nor have I heard any of their songs. Let's see what we got here...

Begins with a heavy, sustained power chord before a repeated high guitar riff comes in. Very pop-punk, very simple, very catchy. A few pick scrapes before drums begin to creep in, building up in tempo and volume. I can't hear bass at all, though that's standard for the genre it seems. Just as it seems a pop-punk verse is about to be unleashed, the riff cuts to a heavy metal riff, complete with pinch harmonic. Very nice.

Vocals remind me of Funeral For A Friend, melodic nasal voice contrasted with tough frat-rock growls. Music throughout is guitar-dominated, switching between the same lead line and lightly strummed octaves. There's a cool breakdown section in the middle where the metal riffist shows off his skills, before the soloist plays a solo which is half speed, half melody. Repeat verse/chorus and metal riff to finish.

Really good tune, apologies if I lack the necessary vocabulary to do it justice. 8/10.

Butch Walker - Alicia Amnesia

Sounds like more modern rock than pop-punk based on the intro, though the vocals are definitely more in the vein of pop-punk. Some unique effects on the music that I can't quite pin down, but it sounds pretty cool. Some use of dynamics, which is good though a little predictable, I'm a real sucker for that right now. The vocalist is very good and I like his style, but I feel like he doesn't fit the music well. Like I said, I though this sounded like modern rock until the vocals came in, and I just don't feel like it all comes together right in the band. Pretty decent solo, nothing too show-offy, but it fits well. Real catchy riff driving most of the song too. That's probably the best part. Not much else to say, the pieces were there, but I don't think it was a good whole. 7/10

Noise Ratchet - New Room
I've never heard of this band, so this should be interesting. It has a somewhat Foo Fighters' style intro, with a high riff being played over a heavy melody. When the vocals come in, the guitars are picked very nicely, and over the harsh drumming, it sounds very good. The vocals aren't amazing, but they work well with the upbeat pop-punk style. Another clear feature is the bass, which is very noticeable, somewhat a rarity in pop-punk.

After the chorus, verse and another chorus play, there's an equally heavy bridge. It never loses it's energy or pace, which I especially like about this song. The loud shouting in the bridge also sounds great while the music changes slightly after every lyric. It ends very quickly as well, something I think works well because the song is so upbeat.

An impressive pop-punk song, with nice rhythms and vocals, and a steady change in melody.

Lorene Drive - God Knows I love You Kid

Intro didn't do much for me until the riff with all the dissonance started. That sounds really cool. Lots of vocal variation, and I think the only thing I don't like is his really harsh scream, I don't think he has the voice for it. Everything else sounds quite good and I'm very impressed. Lots of effects on the guitar during the transitions too, sounds cool and adds a neat feel to the piece.

Breakdown is probably the most generic part of the song, but it fits in the song so it's fine. I just wish it was even crazier. The dynamic work afterwards is real cool too, laid back guitar and soft vocals before jumping back in. Outro guitar work is probably the best guitar on the song, and it sounds really cool. Doesn't sound too tough, but it adds a lot. Overall a really neat song, and very good. If the harsh screaming wasn't in there, or was executed better, I'd consider giving it a higher score, but I think I'll just give it a 9/10 and say it was very enjoyable bar that one aspect.

Halifax - Sydney
This is the firstr ime i've heards Halifax, so it should be interesting. My Dad was born in Halifax.
The song starts off with a very good intro, nice lead parts with hard guitar work, a very cool riff. The singing starts and he sounds a lot like Patrick from Fall Out Boy, which isn't a bad thing imo. The verse is great, unsing the same type of riff as the intro, but with some palm muting. Teh verse leads into the chorus really nicely woith it quietining and the singer holdng a note. The chorus is less impressive compared to the verse. Good use of duel vocals in the song. After the chorus a very TBS esque part comes in, where the singer whispers in a way over lead notes, which buids up to the chorus again. Nice ending, where the chorus includes some screaming and it finishes on the same riff as the intro.

WoW, i really loved this song, i really want to hear mor eof their stuff. Cheers Vince.

Thrice - Deadbolt
It starts very casually with a nice melodic intro. The drums sound very heavy, which I'm not feeling much, but the guitar work makes up for that. When the vocals kick in, I'm not too fond of his singing voice. It's gritty, but it doesn't sound cool. When he shouts in the chorus, it fits his vocal chords a lot better. Another heavy riff combines with a higher riff for the chorus, which sounds pretty cool.

The breakdown is pretty cool, especially the riff that they play. It's got a very sub-dued feel to it, very similar to Funeral For A Friend. The melody is simple, yet repeated a lot and it sounds really good. It then breaks down into a piano melody, which sounds really off to me. Maybe it's a lead in to the next track, I'm not sure. It just seems really random to me.

7/10 from me. It had a good steady pace with decent riffs, but the bad production on drumming and poor vocals let it down for me. The breakdown made up for a bit though.

Cartel - Settle Down

Starts off with a fun drum beat and then joined by the vocals and finall bass and guitar. Typical pop-punk style vocals, but they fit the music great and everything sounds well put together. Lots of neat instrumental work, dropping out at certain points to accenuate other aspects and such. Neat bridge, but the slow ridge is overdone and doesn't feel as cool. The bass fill works better than the part precluding it. Lots of neat guitar work at the end, not quite a solo at first because the vocals are stil going, but at the end it is. Solid ending too. Overall it was very generic, but good generic, so it wasn't boring and overly done or trite, but nor was it anything outstanding that really draws attention. 8.5/10

This song begins with a few taps on the cymbal, then leads into a cool riff. The lead singer has a tad bit annoying voice, but you could definently get used to it. The bass line is nifty, I'm a fan. Then it hits the chorus, and the guitar riff is another good one. I like the lyrics in the chorus. Second verse comes back to the nifty bass and cool guitars. The lyrics start to begin a bit cheesy, but thats okay. The bridge i think, is pretty good, I really like when the singer screams. And then the chorus repeats again. The drums throughout the whole song were good, I really liked the beat. I give it a 8.5/10, on account of the vocals/lyrics aren't the best.

Between Arms - Year Without Reign

The song starts off with a few taps on the cymbol followed by a guitar intro. The vocals kick in at about 0:20. The lead singer has a bit of a unique voice, but I enjoy it. The lyrics throughout the song are solid, and the occasional scream, although not incredibly strong, fits well with the song. Overall the drums, guitar, bass, and vocals seem to fit very well together. The song had quite a bit of energy, and kept me hooked the whole time. I'd definately be interested in hearing more from this band.

9/10, I definately liked it. The screams and vocals could use some improvement, but it doesn't take away from the song. I was impressed.

June - OK Corral

So I chose this song because I just saw these guys live, and I thought they were pretty good, and I wanted to hear how they sound on album. I think I regret not picking up their CD while I was there now. They had such a devoted fan base at their show I had actually thought they were perhaps a lttle overrated, but they're good, I defintely respect this. Now to the song:

Starts with some palm-muted guitars and vocals. The vocalist fits really well for some reason, and the harmonies they bring in are good. Neat orchestration too, very pretty and then the drums kick in and the song starts to rock. Cool sounding, lots of crescendoing/decrescendoing. It sounds cool. They have a good control of dynamics and do some cool things with the alternating vocalists. Tons of harmonies in most of it too, very neat.

The break in the middle with bass is cool, though typical, and then it builds back in well from there. A lot of generic elements to it, but I didn't ever find it that boring to listen to. Very quick end to the song, and I don't think it quite fits, the control they show in the rest of the song would have better fit some fade out with harmonies I think, oh well.

Bridge to Solace - Rethink, Redefine, Revolt

Now, I am not the biggest fan of metalcore. Yet, there are some bands which pull it off very well. The song starts off very heavily, with palm muting straight into the full band. I heard a nice pinch harmonic, which is always awesome. The vocals aren't too deep, which I like, and I think it fits the melodic and fast pace of the music. The chorus has short bursts of music leading to more heavier bits, and I think that's a nice different section for the song.

The bridge feels a bit quieter, but then quickly heads into the chorus againm only to jump into the quieter section again. It's chanting shouts and running bassline certianly seperates it from the rest of the song. The end finishes with another chorus (I think), and an impressive solo to cap off the song.

It's a really good song in my opinion, with lots of grinding riffs and the right amount of shouting vocals.

8/10 from me

So the way this song starts out with a little techno beat, I didn't think it would be pop-punk at all. Then some guitar comes, and horns start to play. About 30 seconds the vox come in, pretty nice. A little tamborine tapping, and the chorus comes along. Its a very catchy chorus, cool guitar parts. Then it goes back to its techno/electronica beats. The second verse is nifty. The bridge/solo is pretty nifty. This whole song is nifty. I like it alot. I could definently listen to these guys alot. 10/10. I'm really digging it. Its very catchy.

Mae - We're So Far Away

Starts with dramatic piano stuff. This sensitive guy comes in and starts singing softly, and the piano work follows suite and changes.Sounds pretty romantic, if the singer was more of a wimp it wouldn't feel out of place on a Disney movie, but as he stands he retains enough mainliness not to make me hurl. It definetly has a very uplifting feel to it, classic romance song, none of the new emo cliche stuff. Oh shi- star sound effects, could see that coming a mile of. The harmonised (I think, I dunno the term) 'ahhh-ing' is pretty effective, and fits into the whole feel of the song. The outro is pretty good also. I'd only heard 'of' this band before, and thought they were gonna be another emo-ish band, but this was something different. The crash of drums, guitar and bass at the end was uneeded though, and justrang of a band trying to asert their 'attitude' onto the listeners. Overall, a very good song, but you need to be in a certain, loved-up mood to enjoy it to the full I guess

The Luniz - I Got 5 On It
Before even reviewing this song, I did a little research and found out it's a song about weed. Brilliant, let's get right into it then. It starts out with an electronic based intro with a nice slow beat. The occasional vocals coming on lead into the full song, with a great hip-hop beat and bassline that is catchy and emphasizes the vocals well. The rapper is good too, and has some great rhyhmes.

It builds up into the chorus slowly and quietly, and it sounds really good with the occasional scratches and proper singing in the chorus. The lyrics are also pretty repetitive and make the chorus a lot more catchy with the lack of music and rapping.

There isn't really much change in music, but you don't need it in a hip-hop song which focus' on the lyrics and vocals really. It's pretty catchy, and the pace of the song is really nice.

7/10. I'm not that much of a hip-hop man, but I thought that was pretty cool. Maybe a little too quiet, but I guess that sets the mood for lighting one up :thumb:

Avenged Sevenfold - Beast and the Harlot

Pretty operatic opening, dragged out guitars and pounding drums soon make way for thumping double bass and tehe typical metal riffage. It's pretty intense, and the vocals, the 'attitude' style voice really fits the song. I'm quite supised the chorus is quite melodic, perhaps this is why so many 'emo' kids like this band. It's good though, and once again subsides for the standard metal fare, complete with virtuoso guitar solo, which is pretty impressive. This kinda reminds me of Dream Theater's 'Train of Thought' style music, if DT were more 'scene' ;) Around 3:56 it goes to a more 'stomping' part before going to the chorus, which I actually love now.

Overall, I actually quite like this song, not the trash fest I expected them to be, and the song is pretty well structured.

Public Enemy - He Got Game (4:42)

I'm guessing this tune is from the soundtrack to the Spike Lee film of the same name. I knew they did the soundtrack, so it's hardly a huge jump in logic.

It opens with a familiar looped sample, the chiming guitar harmonics of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's For What It's Worth. I must admit I was shocked when I first heard it and forced me to question I'd known the song from this version all these years or whether I'd known the original. It's hardly important.

The lyrics seem to some sort of social commentary levelled against young sports stars. "He Got Game" but it's said sneerily, questioning what game is etc. Steven Stills is introduced, apparently, for the chorus which I suppose is fitting. This sounds very good, it all sounds very good. I'm glad they didn't just sample the chorus from the original. I felt like that's what it was building to and I was dreading it as it would have been awful. The choir works well with Stills' voice. Cool. 9/10.

I've heard this band already, but only from a couple of songs (My dad was a big fan of them). This song starts out with a radio-style announcement, which rushes into the song after about 20 seconds. The song has a rolling drum beat and a James Bond-esque style guitar melody. It sounds really cool and funky, and the vocals sound good over the gritty style of music.

The chorus keeps with the rolling drums, and the music gets a bit more cheerier. The vocals also get a little higher, and I think this gives the song a bit of variety and it sounds really cool. Another verse passes by, and then it heads into the bridge (I think, it might be another verse).

Anyway, there's a nice little high lick in the background which you can just hear. That would be nice if it was a little louder, but it doesn't matter. The bridge quickly bursts into a really cool sounding effect on the guitar, into a mini solo, and that sounds ****ing sweet if you ask me. There's a short riff and vocals at the end too, but this lasts about 20 seconds, and then fades out.

Brilliant song for me. It is Brit-Rock to be fair, but it's awesome Brit-Rock. No poncy Hundred Reasons style, this is full on rock, and it's done brilliantly. The addition of the superb effects on guitar just adds to it's easy listenabilty and structure.

9/10, certianly a band I could get behind (Are they broken up now? I'm sure they are).

Selection coming up soon

Say Anything - Belt

Apparently the album opener, so there's a little bit of an intro which isn't bad, but it doesn't add anything. Just a few people saying stuff like "And the record begins with a song of rebellion." On second listen it's actually kinda neat if you listen to the whole dialogue though.

The vocals are pretty unique, but not bad per se. They take some getting used to though. It's very well produced. There's a good mix, though as with most bands the bass could be picked up just a notch. The group vocals contrasting with the main singer is a very cool part, I like that.

All of the riffs are pretty neat, and the instrumentalism is strong, but nothing overly catchy or technical. It doesn't draw attention, instead focusing on supporting on the singer. Usually I prefer stronger instrumental presence, but I actually do like the way they support the singer here. It's definitely a very unique band and I think I might look into them even though they don't draw attention like most of my other music.

Overall the harmonies all sound good and work well, the musicianship is strong but subdued, and the flow of the song is great.

30 Seconds To Mars - Attack

For some reason, I've always thought it was funny that Jared Leto has a serious band. What I've heard from the band before, 3-4 songs at most, didn't really do much for me.

What I find here is a much different 30 Seconds To Mars than the one I remember. I remember them as a boring radio rock band who added little effects to their music to sound vaguely unqiue. Now I see they're a very competent band who add effects to their music for some reason or other. Incidentally, I always get confused when I see this band's name as it's a lot like the Motley Crue song 10 Seconds To Love. \m/

Anyway... the song eases in which a dance-y synth riff, before lightly distorted guitar enters along with a breathy voice, which belongs to Mr. Leto. There's also some sort of sharp synth sound punctuating the initial soft section. I like his voice. Alot. He reminds me of Val Emmich, a song of whose I plan to add to my recommendations (If I remember). He also reminds me of the Dredg singer, too. The whole beginning part of the song is very Dredg-y, what with the trance-y effects and layered guitars. Very nice.

As the song builds to the chorus, Leto gets ever more "agitated" before finally letting loose with the line "and I am fall-la-ling" as his voice becomes broken and distorted. I'm in love with his voice. And that scream sounds amazing... every man's allowed a gay affair, right? The guitars on the chorus are slightly louder, but not heavy. This again reminds me of Dredg, which goes to show how limited my musical vocabulary is. The lyrics don't seem to be great, but who knows?

Errr... I don't know what else to say. I've already outed myself, I should probably just shut... 9/10. :)
