Eh, sorry if this thread is pointless but I already flipped through the beginner thread up there and yeah.

anyways I guess I've been playing bass for over a year now, and guitar less than a year.

I take a class on music theory in school (I'm in 10th grade.)

I've learned the notes on a piano (doesn't take a genius to do that) I understand how scales work, chord construction, octaves whatever, that stuff. I have no technique or sight reading ability what so ever.

I was wondering if I can take this cheapish Casio keyboard I borrowed from my friend, pick up some sheet music and try developing my abilities on my own, I was told that I could end up with a bad technique and it would take years to re-learn.

I'm someone who wants more musical abilities.

any help is appreciated.

I'd go for it.

I don't think there's any techniques that you'd do wrong that you couldn't easily relearn.

If you're just starting, then the main thing is to make sure you press the keys in the right way - make sure your fingers are slightly bent.

Do it!!!!

I'm sure you know who Tony MacAlpine is. If not he was a competition level pianist, a complete master he knows all the Chopin Etudes, Preludes, etc.. He decided to pick up the guitar and guess what he's one of the sickest guitarists around. The guy shreds metal, blues, classical and jazz on guitar and keys. IMO he's one of the best overall musicians alive today.

He's currently touring with Steve Vai and has a Jazz band called CAB. Tony rules, I've met him a couple time and the guy is very down to earth and cool as hell.
