As an initial correction, you can't really quantify "intellectual." You should have said "intelligent." Maybe you shouldn't have tried to use a word of such narrow definition that you don't understand.

Secondly, "lack of creation?" Last time I checked you writing sucks. It boggles my mind that you have won any challenges at all. I guess it doesn't take much to win a challenge these days. Back in the day there could be 10+ really great lyrics in one challenge alone where these days there's hardly 1-2 in a 9 person challenge. I don't think you're in a position to criticize anybody when your writing and "creation" is mediocre at best.

When someone insults me just because I chose to use a non common word in a lyrical 'challenge' I find it childish.
Yeah, the wording I used was out of context but I wasn't really thinking clearly because I was pissed.
For you, being a mod you shouldn't take sides in an arguement that is as retarded as it is but if you want to goto the extent of insulting my work because you think you are Gods gift of writing talent appointed by your own self-conceit.. well then you can screw off because I could give a crap less about being a part of anything you are affiliated with.

Firstly, you got "insulted" over the internet and you're taking offense to it? Seems like your problem. Everybody makes fun of the challenge word. Get used to it.

Secondly, mods can choose whatever side of an argument they want. I think you're wrong. I sure as hell won't ban you for disagreeing with me. That's stupid and immoral. I can voice my opinion just like everybody else on this forum. Being a mod doesn't turn me into this aloof observer. I remain an active member.

Thirdly, turning a criticism of your writing into ad hominem against me is just dumb. I say your writing sucks and you turn around and complain that I'm just being arrogant. Wow, you really defended you writing there. I think you suck at writing, so what. Get over it or maintain. Don't just try to get back.

Scarred, check out who voted this forum. The veteran of the challenges was Disco Dragon. DISCO DRAGON. Everybody was focusing on flow and how well the lyrics would work as a song and not if they're great lyrics or not. I sense because people like pixies and SDagger listen to music that is more alternative, they've experienced how songs that don't appear to flow, really can but in a more complex way, like with CTTS. This last challenge was just very n00bish so the voting reflected it. I don't think he deserved to win a challenge with that song. It just wasn't up to the caliber of other ones that have beaten other amazing lyrics in more massive and brutal challenges.

Ya corupt, truce. I've been here since 2001. Never been banned. I understand the line between just being a dick, which I am, and being immoral or bad.

Hey, what's wrong with me being the vet for once? I've been around these parts long enough to get that title. So go suck, eat, or chew on a dick.

Anyways, I didn't vote for corupt's song (or anyone else's) based around flow. I went mostly by word choice, content, creativity, and overall impact. That's how I've always voted, and probably how I always will.

And on another note, I like being able to watch an argument from the outside for once, instead of being the one involved in it. Kind of different. Kind of nice.

Man, your musical elitism is so overbearing it's sickening. I listen to alot of the music you listen to, and a lot that you don't, and of course you listen to a lot that I don't. Your taste is not superior to anyone else's. CTTS do not write the best lyrics of all time. It's all subjective, so understand people have different opinions and move on.

I have included flow in my ratings sice I got here and will always do so because it's an important part of the music for me. Scarred and I were the ones who voted Corrupt the lowest, so don't act like you're out alone in a field. The voting was pretty even among many pieces, but about half the people loved Corrupt's piece so it won. No vets voted...cry a river, it happened and it's not going to change. I don't think any of the entries were stellar really, and I have seen better, but I'm not bitching about it because it happens. I didn't like Corrupt's piece and I voted accordingly, some people disagreed and he won. Good on him, his writing appeals to other people and I can appreciate that. So true .... Like the time I caught the ferry over to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for my shoe. So, I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days nickels had pictures of bumblebees on them. 'Give me five bees for a quarter', you'd say. Now, where were we? Oh, yeah...the important thing was that I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn't have white onions because of the war; the only thing you could get was those big yellow ones

I'm as liberal as you get and I didn't like Corrupt's piece. I think the best days were when we lived in caves, those were the days.

Anyways, that list of achievements has nothing to do with knowledge of lyrics, so it really is irrelevant in this case. DFelon is respected because he is very knowledgeable. Vets usually are more knowledgeable because if you hang out here long enough you'd have to be a moron not to learn. People like Blockhead prove it is possible though. You can have all the experience you do and still learn tons from vets because they earn that status due to their knowledge and from being around a long time. I respect most people who are referred to as vets because they usually earn that status. At the same time it can cause an elitism, but there are reasons they are vets, and it's not just join date.

Necroses-bass
04-21-2005, 05:08 PM
i fully agree mate even vets learn a lot, and i've got a s'hitload to learn (i'm going to see Brian May soon for some lessons really excited), but lyrics is something you can't really critisize on except for when you actually know what the authors aim is.

What i was saying was that it doesn't matter how good someone is, their opinion is just as important as someone who is not as good.
in the argument above it seems to be that everyone is inferior to the 'vets' maybe in skill but theyr opinion couints just as much as like me or Mr. Hankie.

Hmm...well that's what it is to me at least, I do realize some people are not mature enough to employ that, but I believe I do, and I have no problem with a n00b winning.

Necroses: I can only agree with you to an extent. Many n00bs wouldn't know good writing if it slapped them in the face. Read half the comments in S&L proper if you disagree. Usually the Vets are more immune to this because the knowledge of what makes it good is there. Liking writing is subjective, but this contest is about good writing as well as what you like, and it's important to blend the two in your critique. I also have to disagree when you say you can't critique lyrics without knowing the author's aim. That to me is entirely false. There are lyrical attributes which you can judge without knowing the author's aim. I also won't lie, I respect the views of the vets more than of the n00bs here. It's a matter of experience really. They have seen more and I believe they have a better grasp of what makes good writing. You can disagree but I do value high rankings by vets more than I do by n00bs.

CTTS don't have the best lyrics of all time. They are merely an example of how the text by itself doesn't immediately correlate to a good flow but when it comes out in the song it sounds just right.

If you're opinion counts more, then at least justify it
I'm not denying skill at all, i really enjoyed reading you work but i just got the impression that what the more recent members (like me) thought of something didn't count because the vets said something else.
but i think you'll find that at one point you might actually learn something of a 'noob' its in everyones riht to express theyr opinion and they should be getting lair because of that.
I'm here to learn and really wouldn't even think of giving you advice on the subject of poetry, but looking at the work of a noob or someone without the experience you got might actually slightly change the way you look at things.

i'm talking about simple things like i found out not that long ago that leaving the lead in a guitar with humbuckers drains the batteries. Its a bit of an off topic example but it should do.

Wow, you guys are really taking this whole veterans vs. new people thing to an extreme. I was just joshin' with you when I talked about wanting to be recognized as a vet. I could honestly care less about a title.

And what's the deal with rambling on about all of your achievements? I guess I just don't get why being ranked well as a guitarist/percussionist or being published in a poetry anthology is all that important. Soooo........good for you guys?

But in all honesty, there are people I respect on this forum more than others. Is it because they're vets? Perhaps. Or it could be that they are great writers, and that's what really counts anyways. And generally speaking, the vets are usually more talented than the new people. It's just how it goes. People get better the longer they write. Some of the new people are fantastic writers and might be better than a lot of the vets, but that's a rare case.

So I guess what I'm trying to say is this: Don't fuck a virgin just to say you broke a hymen..........

I can actually see no point to the back and forth arguing going on. To be honest, who gives a sh it. And just out of curiosity, why the name vet? I can think of about 20 names/titles to give an expierenced song writer/poet that sound cooler than that.

UBC believes that lyrics and libretto are poetry if there is no music associated with it. When you crit here, its, for the most part, critting poetry.
You're right though. Its better if you look at the pieces as separate from the writer. Most pieces will reflect the experience but still.
Personally, I'd value the opinions of someone who I think writes well than someone who's starting out but that isnt really a statement on whose opinion is more valid.

See, you're in a lyrical challenge section. I've won this thing many times, I'm currently taking poetry class from a revered American poet, and I'm published in a poetry anthology. This speaks to why my opinion is respected here. It's not just because I've been here since 2001.
I've had 4 poems put on tracks in "Sound of Poetry" and 3 Editor's Choice Awards and have had nearly all my poems published in anthology's all from poetry.com
yet my writing sucks obviously shows how much you know
anyways I don't wanna start an argument agian I just wanted to throw in my references since you were bragging about yours :thumb:

Corupt2057

But in all honesty, there are people I respect on this forum more than others. Is it because they're vets? Perhaps. Or it could be that they are great writers, and that's what really counts anyways. And generally speaking, the vets are usually more talented than the new people. It's just how it goes. People get better the longer they write. Some of the new people are fantastic writers and might be better than a lot of the vets, but that's a rare case.

I totally agree with this

Hey. poetry.com sucks. I've been letting them use my stuff for years. Have you read the other poems that get published? I got one published there and when I read the book I was embarassed about it. I'm proud of getting published in a legit literary journal for Northern California. Not some crap moneymaking strategy from poetry.com.

Exactly what can and can you not put in a song...

The basic idea of the challege is to have the lyrics stand on their own merit. Some ppl use to put tabs, chords & other musical discriptions. There's never been a problem with labeling verses or chorus but we've always tried to stay away from discriptive musical references.

Yeah listen to BBB man, he knows his stuff.

In general if something is meant to be sung differently or spoken or something like that, try putting that alternate section in italics. It sort of neatens it up and gives a clear impression that that section is meant to be ifferent.

Chorus applies to the lyrics as well, stuff like guitar solo and interlude do not.

Just because you are not intellectual enough to understand a word of such narrow definition,
and have to resort to such shallow witicism to combat your lack of creation. You shouldn't resort to insults and words that don't even exist

Way to "burn" someone for being, as you say, "not intellectual enough to understand a word of such narrow definition," while you yourself are apparently not intellectual enough to write a grammatically coherent sentence. You even edited it, and it's still atrocious. Try finishing a thought before finishing your sentence.

I am rather frustrated and confounded by why my lyrics recieve such poor grading....any assistance in helping me understand why my lyrics were graded lower then some other lyrics with....in my view....less thoughtful lyrics, and I wonder what you all look for in a lyric to be good, as I have writtent three pieces for competitions now that have been underscored, imo, and I am rather frustrated (with the crits, the grades, and myself)

I want to know what I'm doing 'wrong' so I can 'fix' the problem...

I think pixies may have just given you the best advice a person could.

If you're frustrated with getting bad scores, write better songs. It's really pretty simple. Don't gripe about it, just work on improving. If you don't want to do that, then I suppose you could just bribe all of the judges with BJs like super d.

..........on second thought, she hasn't won a challenge in a while.

.................on third thought, she also gives terrible head. Go figure.

so... has anyone read my song? whos the winner?

edit: im dumb, i see the voting thread now, i am new afterall (to this) my old account got banned permanently (thelizardkingcc)

anyhow, im gonna start doin these lyrical challenges pretty often, so you all will see me around here a lot. I hope the conversation gets better than the first couple of pages of this thread, I had to stop reading at page 3 cuz nothing was being said. Nothing of value or merit, just a bunch of trash talking between lyricists, which is just dumb.

Welcome back, Minos.

(The following information is only for the people that were 'confuzzled' by the the theme of my song. It's about building up an imaginary perfect person in your head. It's part of a concept album we're doing. Interpret it anyway you like though.)

Season of the mad, we get all whiny and bitchy ever so often. You'll understand it better once you've been indoctrinated thoroughly.

The voting thread is going to close monday about 1PM so everyone try to get your votes in this weekend I'll be gone but I'll get mine in sunday night
anyways I apologize for this challenges word
but I thought it would be more of a competition if everyone wrote about the same theme instead of just a more broad spectrum
anyways good luck guys

6945. can you elaborate on your crit of mine? I can accept your opinion but I want to know why

I spent about 1/2 hour with it yesterday and each time I read it, I got into it more or better....more better. If someone reads it once, quickly, you're gonna see crits like...it doesnt rhyme...and it doesnt really do the piece justice. It's like a k.s.e. song. You have to sit down with it, absorb it, to enjoy it. Drummergirl got really good with this style. Words that didnt necessarly rhyme in the classical sense but flowed, meshed and complemented each other. Look at you're first 2 verses:

strong,
weak,
redemption,
to me.

My pride is at stake.
unwilling,
of the,
consequence.
loyalty,
approval.

You're no drummergirl, yet, But I like where you're headed

2 JurialMunkey- It’s true, it is so cliché. But the fact that you know that makes it somehow more palatable. You have some nice morbid lines in there, but I feel like you need another stanza in there to really develop a scathing moral of some sort.

Thankfully someone got it. And actually gave some thoughtful advice. :D

Yeah, it's a work in progress..xxx Lots of bits not finished and a whole section to write lyrics to..x Theres a bit that has to go in just before the "at least i'm an important chess piece..." part.

in review of my useless rant, I hold myself in a higher regard then that, and have there for removed the rant, but to some up its purpose....

And as a final note I apologize for the rant that was originally in this post, you dont want to read it, and I am sorry to waste anyone's time who read it...

You're not doing anything "wrong" unless you're trying to write lyrics to please others. You mention "thoughtful" lyrics. Maybe you're thinking too much. I seem to write best when my mind is calm, empty. I read you're last 3 pieces and one thing maybe I see is a pretty ordinary vocabulary. Some people just have a knack for "turning a phrase", one line that is original, unique can make an impression on ppl. I dont think you've developed that yet. "Mortal Crime" was thougtful enough. But, have you ever explored the map? Literally? Maybe you're trying to capture the essence of something you havnt experienced so it comes off a little flat. Just my thought on your ?
Hard to tell what people will vote for. Best to write for youself, write from your experience. You might try studing NP since you're a RUSH fan. I read his ghost rider book and the Vapor Trails CD took on a whole new meaning.

Heh, thanks for the advice man...I've read Ghost Rider, and have Vapor Trails...infact, being both a drummer and a lyricist, Neil's where I get a lot of my inspiration from (how do I say I'm a friggen fanatic without looking like a dork?)...He's a great writer, yeah...but he's kinda outta my league (part of why I like Rush so much)...I cant turn phrases like him, that would be crazy...plus, hes been doin what he's doin for thirty years...I haven't been writing lyrics for more then a year or so...but everytime i try to write something like that, it comes out very....teenager sounding (imagine that!)

Because I was going to say something tacky about how your envy of people who have actually won a challenge is a bit over the top. But that would be rude, so I decided not to. :)

Also, I'm a slut.

Disco Dragon

Actually, I'm not really envious at all. It's an internet lyric challenge. I think I'll be able to cope with my losing. Besides, I do it for fun, not to win.

And after all, some day I might be a winner, but you'll still be a whore. :)

Yes the noob/vet argument. My two cents:

Being a vet is a huge accomplishment, and one that should be respected...lets say this...you are looking for tips on playing ice hockey. Who are you more likely to ask, a guy who has been playing twenty years, or the guy who just started last year? And when learning guitar, would you rather learn from Eric Clapton, or the 13 year old across the street who just finished his lessons at the local music shop?

My thoughts exactly.

Clapton played emotionally, he wasn't amazing though.

Using older players verses new players, I'd take lessons from Peter Lindgren over Eric Clapton anyday

Minos
05-02-2005, 02:56 PM
Isn't emotion kind of the point? The reason I dislike Dream Theater is simply because their music may be amazing, but it has no emotion...Like I mentioned in one of my crits, like reading from a textbook. Besides, ones music is not a complete showcase for how much knowledge and skill you have. I design web pages. If I design a small, and straightforward site because it's all I want/need, does that imply I couldn't do more?

Look guys, we aren't asking for much, lyrically. I know there are different styles, different musical genres, blah blah. But somewhere we need to see something...I want to believe that there is a POINT to reading your song, not just because the rules say so. I want to enjoy reading your song. Having trouble with imagery? It's not hard, check out 'White Room' by Cream:

In the white room / with black curtains / near the station.
Blackroof country / no gold pavements / tired starlings.
Silver horses / ran down moonbeams / in your dark eyes.
Dawnlight smiles / on you leaving / my contentment.

I’ll wait in this place where the sun never shines;
Wait in this place where the shadows run from themselves.

You said no strings / could secure you / at the station.
Platform ticket / restless diesels / goodbye windows.
I walked into / such a sad time / at the station.
As I walked out / felt my own need / just beginning.

I’ll wait in the queue when the trains come back;
Lie with you where the shadows run from themselves.

At the party / she was kindness / in the hard crowd.
Consolation / for the old wound / now forgotten.
Yellow tigers / crouched in jungles / in her dark eyes.
She’s just dressing / goodbye windows / tired starlings.

I’ll sleep in this place with the lonely crowd;
Lie in the dark where the shadows run from themselves.

Look at the stickied threads. This isn't the current challenge. There is a rule thread you should read as well. That'll clarify some stuff.
