I like a lot of rap/hip-hop, but the stuff I do like I don't know what it is because it's random stuff my friend's brother listens to.

I hate how with most of the albums have a few really good songs and the rest suck, because I hate just listeneing to a few songs, I always try and listent o the whole thing.

I actually think Valkyrie Missile is one of the weaker tracks on the album, although the last minute or so it the best thing Tom's ever written. (Slight exageration)
My favourites were The Adventure, It Hurts and Start The Machine.
The War had a pretty cool main riff, but the rest of the song bores the **** outta me.
I really liked WDNTW at first, as it was just so relaxing to sit back and chill to, but now, it's just so boring. (And to those who are gonna say something like "Why chill to AVA when there's so many other bands that are like, meant for that...?" I don't like those other bands, so please don't say it.)

(Sorry I'm late on the reply)
Are you serious? You listen to pop-punk, and blink-182, and you're saying a power chord riff is lame!? Name one blink song that isn't mostly powerchords.
I like pop-punk, I like power chords. Go to anyone in the metal forums, and they'll tell you how lame and untallented powerchord riffs are, to them. Then I'll tell you how lame, over-comlicated, and just boring most of thier music is, to me. I'd assume if you lsiten to pop-punk, you'd at least accept the fact that > 90% of the bands will use mostly powerchords, and just enjoy it, coz it sounds good.
Okay, I'm finished.
And I couldn't care less if Travis is making out with random women, he's no longer married is he? He can do whatever he wants. (As far as women go, haha.)

123

Most of Tom's noted riffs are just based off power chords anyways. I'm sure he can play better than that (because everyone can) but it wouldn't fit the music so he doesn't.

Or he possibly can't in which case I would laugh in his face.

Hep Kat
09-15-2006, 11:19 PM
He can't.

There are all kinds of live recordings of him screwing up songs that are so simple that a <insert witty person/onject here> could play.

You can actually here him (on occasion) going "Goddammit" or something when he messes up.

Tom may be a "bad" guitarists.. But barely any1 can make riffs and songs like him... His creativity is by far a larger asset then all those people in guitar forum playing "skilled music" which i believe sounds **** compared to toms little riff and 4 chords..

yourstruly
09-16-2006, 04:48 AM
I'd imagine Tom to be a fairly decent guitarist, I mean he's only been playing for like 15 years..

poo-poo-pee-pee
09-16-2006, 05:13 AM
Mmm, not really. I've been playing for 3 years now, and at one stage, after about 2 and a half years of playing I didn't pick up a guitar for over a week or two, I was just out everyday, but when I finally did, I sucked ***. I was worse than I was when I'd been playing for like 6 months. I've improved alot since then though, I can actually play guitar pretty decently now.
Anyways, the point of this little anecdote was that even if you've been playing a long time, if you stop for a while, you tend to lose alot of skill, and I doubt Tom plays guitar everyday, and pratices scales and what-not.
Same thing goes for skateboarding... I just found that out today, I'm pathetic now, haha. Anyways...

I'm almost in agreement with pppp. But it's best if you mix it up. Simple effective riffs and blistering crazy mad skill leads, you know?

Ross
09-16-2006, 07:03 AM
Hmm. I've been playing guitar for about 10 years, and I'm not great but not bad either. If I don't play guitar for a few weeks I find my skill doesn't change massively, and it only takes 5 mins to pick it up again.

dancetomdance182
09-16-2006, 09:00 AM
Yeah, I doubt Tom learns anything new about guitar. I doubt he gets a book or a teacher to teach him stuff that he doesn't know.
I have to say that even if songs are less complicated, and if they are power chord riffs they can sound awesome.
Just listen to the outro of Valkeryie Missle-however you spell that-

Ross
09-16-2006, 10:07 AM
Indeed, as has been said countless times before; some of the best riffs are also the simplest.

Rage Against The Machine are a classic example of a band that has lots of awesome riffs, but for the most part they're real simple to play. Some of the solos though... wow. Hardness.

Again, Dammit would be a pop-punk example. Real simple, but real effective.

I wonder how many times I (and others) have posted that in this thread...

It takes creativity to write so many decent songs using only a few diffferent power chords, and changing them up some.

Look at Green Day. Those guys play in the same key on a huge amount of their songs, and how many great songs do they have? Its tough to do that.

And you dont play guitar for 15+ years, and only know how to play power chords. I'm sure Tom can play other stuff. But why do that, when the music you're playing doesnt need it?

It's simple to make a song out of just those four chords, Blink did it all the time with just 4 chords.

You must be some sort of idiot if you think you need more chords than that in a pop punk song to make it sound relatively like a Blink song.

---Blink182 Song---
1. Simple riff to open
2. Palm muted verse
3. Chorus (same as verse but no muting)
4. Repeat 2 and 3 once
5. Bridge
6. End on a chorus

So simple, yet real effective. They weren't particularly original, and they weren't particularly clever, but they had some good catchy songs and did what they were supposed to.

But let's face it; they were hardly creative geniuses. They just had a bit of luck and were good on stage (humour worked well) so they went far.

MattSharpIsCool
09-17-2006, 03:37 PM
I think Mark and Tom's real talent was their songwriting, not so much their musical abilities. Like I said earlier, its tough to take the same 4 notes and write a bunch of songs using those notes. You have to find ways to change them up and keep it different, even though its the same. And they were always pretty decent at writing lyrics.

A lot of very good bands only used a few chords. Everybody slobbers on AC/DC's collective knob, yet they only used a few power chords in pretty much every song they wrote. Ya, they had solos, but the main structure of the song was built on power chords.

A song doesnt have to be complex to be good. Blink's songs are easier as piss to play, but they're still good. Thats really what matters.

A song doesnt have to be complex to be good. Blink's songs are easier as piss to play, but they're still good. Thats really what matters.

exactly... But everyone thinks writing music like blink 182 is easy when it is not at all. They had talent. Barely anyone could write an album like enema of the state. You have to have extreme talent. You see so many ****ty pop punk bands... WHY... cause its not as easy as you think to wright a good song.

I don't have a band yet, but i've written alot of songs. Whether they're good or not is up to the public. But I think they're alright so whatever.

Do you guys reckon Enema of The State would've been as massive of a craze as it was if Blink stuck with their Dude Ranch sound?

That song on Dude Ranch called "Boring" would be pretty hard to play while singing, like Tom does.

I listened to it, and he plays power chords in the verses and chori (plural of chorus)... don't understand your reasoning... unless you speak of his muting pattern.

No, it's really not. My band plays 'Boring', and it's just as easy as any other blink song. I sing and play guitar on it.
(I hate playing it, ironicly it's a rather boring song to play. But our drummer wanted to play it for some reason I can't remeber. Anyways...)
I think the hardest blink song to sing and play would be Touchdown Boy, the verses are a bitch, haha. But Tom seems to manage it okay, so whatever...

"Tom DeLonge's band will tour the country in November. Could sparks fly when he crosses paths with his ex-bandmates?

Tom DeLonge's post-blink-182 band, Angels & Airwaves, have announced plans to tour the country in November. Supporting their debut, We Don't Need to Whisper, the band will kick off their trek Nov. 3 in Las Vegas and will wrap up Nov. 29 in Mexico City.

In between, DeLonge will come dangerously close to crossing paths with his estranged blink-182 bandmates, Travis Barker and Mark Hoppus, who will be touring with their new band, (+44). On Nov. 12, both bands will play Pennsylvania, with A&A in Pittsburgh and (+44) in Philly. Two days later, both groups will visit New York, with A&A in Albany and (+44) in NYC. Finally, the bands will narrowly miss each other by just one day, when (+44) plays Providence, RI's Lupo's Nov. 16 and A&A hits the venue the next day. Will Hoppus and Barker leave DeLonge a little surprise in Rhode Island? Stay tuned!"

Blink-182 spin-off group (+44) have confirmed that new song "No It Isn't" is about the end of their old band.

Speaking following their second ever gig -- in London on September 19 -- drummer Travis Barker said the track from their debut album "When Your Heart Stops Beating," due to be released on November 13, deals with the demise of his former band, reports NME.

He said: "That song is absolutely about the end of Blink-182. It was a classic case of something bad happening and everyone around you not telling you what the deal was.

"Like the owner of your record label telling you, 'Oh, everything is going to be fine. Any press you do, Travis, make sure you say everything is cool!' And it turns out the same dude is part of the conspiracy of Tom (DeLonge) quitting Blink."

He added that the it was forces outside the band who suggested they did not initally confirm the split. "The only reason we were being cool and calling it an 'indefinite hiatus' is because that's what this dork at the head of our record label was telling us. So that's when you find out that everyone was conspiring against you. That makes you go, '**** you. Here's a song about the real deal.'"

Speaking to MTV Barker explained: "'No It Isn't' is about coming out a year later and telling the truth. About being like, 'Yeah, we were on our way to go play a tsunami benefit (Music for Relief: Rebuilding South Asia)', and Tom didn't call, but his manager did, and he said that Tom couldn't contain his **** long enough to play a song for people who were suffering, which was pretty sad to me.

"And obviously we weren't going to say anything bad about him while we were recording our record, but now that it's done, we are gonna talk about it. For a year, people were saying that what Tom did was valid or called for. It eats at you. So maybe you have to talk about it, and maybe you have to write a song about it."

EDIT:

http://www.blink-182.de/index.php?file=interviews/traviscraig&templade_id=3

Uwe: Is (+44) your new band or just a project?

Travis: New Band!

Do you think (+44) will be just as successful as blink-182?

Travis: *knock* *knock* *knock* (on the table) I hope!

When is the release date for your first single "When Your Heart Stops Beating"?

Travis: I think its released in the states in the next week or two.

When is the video premier?

Travis: Hopefully next week!

Can you tell me the meanings from some songs? (No It Isn’t, Make You Smile)

Travis:

No It Isn’t: Its about the end of blink

Make You Smile: Its pretty self explain. Its about a girl a have a good time of your life!

Craig, do you still play in "Lars Frederiksen and the Bastards"? Are there plans for a new record?

This band is on "indefinite hiatus" now, I can’t say. This is a question for Lars.

Whats up with you an the "Mercy Killers"? Are you the founder of that band? Is it hard trying to balance time between both bands?

Ohh, yeah I started that band. I can’t say its hard, (+44) is my priority you know. I try to work on Mercy Killers stuff around it.

What kind of guitar do you play?

"Gibson Les Paul"

Which one is the most personal (+44) song for you?

Craig: When your heart stops beating! I came in at the process, came in at the band like 2/3 of the record was done. So, that’s my favourite!

Travis: I like "Little Death" a lot, "When Your Heart Stops Beating", I like "Chapter 13"

And your all time favourite song?

Craig: Jonny Cash, there is a song called "Drifter"

Do you think blink will come back one day?

Travis: I don’t know

Tom claims you never told him about (+44) and that re read about it later in a magazine, is this true?

Travis: (+44) was in around until he had his manager call us, the day of the benefit show he quit the band. So, there was no band. There was no (+44) until he quit blink.

If you could say one thing to Tom right now, what would it be?

Travis: Nothing

Mark isn’t involved in Atticus, is he involved in FSAS now?

Yeah, I mean he’s always a part of our family. He had interest in Atticus, but now Atticus in fact is Tom. Yeah, he is in our family now!

And Craig is in this family too?

Travis: Yeah, when ever he wanna be.

What are your plans for the future? For you personally and for (+44)

Travis: (+44) we go back in the states, we do like a club tour and come back to europe in January. And I keep my personall plans to myself :D

And yours Craig?

Ahh, the same thing.

How are you feeling about making your (+44) debut in germany?

Craig: We are excited to play.

Travis: Yeah, I can’t wait. The best part on being on tour being in a band is actually play!

What can we expect from the (+44) live experience?

We play our entire record from beginning to end and the secret should be on the record. It’s a surprise! Check it out!

What do you expect from the german fans and the concerts in germany?

Craig: The german fans are amazing!

Will you ever tour small countries like Austria / Switzerland / Norway etc?

Travis: Yeah, maybe next time we come over here.

We know that you are a vegetarian Travis, are you still it?

Yeah!

What’s your favourite food?

I love Tofu, I love vegetables , Mexican food, ahh all kind of food. I eat like ten times a day.

And your fav. food Craig?

I like everything you know? I like Indian food

Craig, we don’t know much about your person, wold you tell us your birthday and your place of birth?

Craig: I am born on 11.03.1978 in Bridgeport Connecticut in the Eastcoast

Do you have a girlfriend or maybe a wife?

Craig: No

And your favourite Bands and favourite Movie?

Craig: Ohh man. I listen to so many kind of music. Radiohead, I like Slayer, Old School Punk-Rock

And where do you live now?

Craig: I live in East Los Angeles.

What’s your favourite Band and your favourite Movie this time Travis?

I love everything from the Beastie Boys, The Misfits, King Diamond. And I love True Romance.

How is your relationship to Shanna?

I start the divorce and I am separated now.

Where are your kids now?

They are in LA, in the bus.

How many tattoos do you have? Did you count them?

Travis: Ahh …. but I am absolutely not finished!

Craig: I never count them. I got 1,2,3 "wrap" done

There are you rumors you had something with Paris Hilton:

Travis: …. I don’t know *laughs*

How would you describe the (+44) music.

Travis: It's rock music.

What do you think about Angels & Airwaves?

Travis: Its great, all those guys in the band are great. Dave Kennedy is a good dude, Ryan is a good dude, Atom is a good guy.

Whats your opinion of their record, do you have a favourite song?

Travis: No, I don’t have the record, I don’t hear the record. I just know Ryan was in "The Distillers", Adam was in "Offspring" who were at the Transplants Tour, Warped Tour, Dave Kennedy I know from Box Car Racer. So this people I know are good people. I can’t talk bad about. Its Toms’ own deal

Has everyone seen the bad quality live videos of Plus 44 on youtube?
If not, I suggest doing so, if you have an interest in Plus 44, as they play new, unrealesed songs, and there's a pretty cool little extention of 'No It Isn't'.
And I'd just like to say that Mark is 678492361764561492594 times better at singing live than Thomas.

When I buy a new CD, it happens in one of two ways.
Wanna hear 'em!? Too bad, I'm gonna tell you anyway:

1. I hear of the band from a friend/TV/Magazine/SomeStupidForumOnMX so I download 5 or 6 random songs on limewire. If I like what I hear, I go buy a CD.
2. I've listened to the band for years, and they bring out a new CD. I just go buy it, coz I know I'm gonna like it.

Oooh, and occasionally I get free CD's from my bro, he works at Shock records, if anyone's heard of 'em. They're pretty big in Australia.

And that's my life story.

Thats right, I am back, and ready to play music again....I just had my son, and will never have sex again if this is what's gonna happen. I have been working like mad on a few things. 1) I just finished the best song I ever wrote, ( I know I seem to say that a lot but its true) you will hear it in a few weeks, 2) the gift short film, will be airing on October 3rd I believe and then a live performance a week or so later. I also have been gearing up some major stuff with Macbeth Footwear and Atticus Clothing. Angels has been a roller coaster of a ride, and it is just starting.....I can't wait till you all hear this new song, 8 1/2 mins long, three movements....and the chills to go along. I have been getting a lot of requests about doing interviews to address my reasons for leaving Blink, if anybody wants to know I did an interview about 6 months ago in Kerrang! about it. It is such old news for me; I can't even imagine talking about it again. I love and miss those guys, they are great people, and I am excited for their amazing new future....
Films, games, videos, tours, movies......its all coming from angels & airwaves, sorry I had to go deliver a ****ing human being.....stop being weird.....until tomorrow, today....

Yeah. Dude ranch is probably their best if you're new to them and are older than about.. 16 ish. It's the most punk-rawk of their most recent 4 CDs.

I'm not really sure, haha. I think they're all 'round Australia, but mostly Melbourne based. They bring out some pretty sick bands, I'm pretty sure they re-released Buddha with Kung-Fu in like... 1997ish.

I have to say Tom sounds cooler than Travis at the moment. Travis gave the impression that he doesn't care what Tom is up to, and Tom's saying he's "excited" for Mark and Travis' futures. Unless he doesn't mean that, but I think he does.

valkrye missle - Probably the best song of this album... Would be the worst on any blink 182 album

Distraction- Oh god cut my ears off with hiv infected class. The vocals are disgusting. Boring. repatative. WWWWOOOLLLL BBBEEWWWWWOOORRRR DDDDIISSSSSWAAACTTTIOOON

Do it for me now... Lame effect sounds like the on in VM... boring vocals.. but on of the better songs?

adventure- Ok song. Still Boring as hell. Sound similar to other songs. Vocals are wierd and annoying

a littles enough - wow this is like boring me?

the war - lame drum beat intro... even worse guitar chords...arghh sounds like somthing they would make for a tv show. Shocking

the gift- hahha same effect as another song..boring... still an ok track.. but to long

it hurts - crappy so called riff at the start.. doest flow together.. And just sounds bad. Another boring song.. no hook...

good day - zZZ

Start the Machine- Well Lame doll effect just boring

my crap quick review of why i hate ava. overall i would say this album sucks. People listen to it cause they like tom. Many effects are used over. The chord progression is boring. THere guitar riffs sound crap. I would say if any of these song where put on a blink 182 album they would be known as the worst song on the album without a doubt.

sorry about the spelling

^^^Worst post ever made in this thread. And that's saying something. You put no thought into what you said at all. You just looked back onto the songs quickly in your mind, using the image you've projected from the album because of how you feel against Tom. It's a pretty good album, that imo is underrated. Each song are similiar sounding, but alot of Blink songs were too. It's the way Tom writes. If the intire album wasn't like it was, do you think Tom would have been able to hammer his story home? It's a theme to it. You can't have a theme if there isn't a theme within the songs that connect. It's logic. Give the album another chance, with an open mind. And forget who's writing it.

AAA isn't bad chillout music. The album as a whole is really bad, but I think part of that is because of Tom's "Cruisinism" when he said it was the best thing in 20 years or whatever.
