So, I agree with you. I can kinda get the messy spike going on, like it all fell down, but not straight up.

You really think Plus 44 won't be cliché. From the song we've all heard, the melodies are pretty bad and the lyrics are especially a let down, for someone who has wrote better songs ("ST4TK", "Stockholm Syndrome", "I Miss You"). Even Travis' drumming wasn't as impressive as it can be.

It's hard to compare AAA with Blink, because it's made up of band members from other amazing bands as well, whereas +44 is pretty much Mark and Travis with someone else.

I'm very psyched for AAA now, because I think the music will be somewhat epic in terms of what Tom can do. Let's face it, no one is going to be thinking "Hey, you heard that band with the guy from Rocket From The Crypt?"

Kif, it was hard to compare boxcar racer to blink182, even though it had tom and travis in it...BCR was a little bit darker sounding, and the drums were amazing in BCR, where they were decent in Blink, but rarely mind-blowing beats...just fast usually

As for the drums not being as good as barker can do in +44, it kind of shows that he knows when to do what...if your playing acoustic drums to acoustic guitars, theres only so much you can do and make it still sound good, where on electric guitar/bass if you play the same song the drums can absolutely go crazy if necessary...the acoustics are kind of like with keys too...if you have keys in your music then you should probably hold back from doing anything too crazy, because it will make everything sound muddy and bad..so i think barker just did his thing on the drums...maybe they'll end up having some more powerful songs where he can show off a little bit...

...even though i have come to conclusion that barker is definately not my favorite drummer anymore since i started listening to alkaline trio a few years ago

Travis is nothing more than above average. The only thing he has going for him is that he can play semi-fast. If you want to hear fast playing in pop-punk/punk music then listen to Byron McMackin from Pennywise.

Not me, he's good, but not better than Travis. Nicko McBrain is a sweet drummer, in my opinion most likely the best, although no one would ever back me up on that..They'd say Zeppelin's drummer, or someone stupid like that.

yeh alot of drum forum people think all the old drummers are soooo good.... travis has alot of speed which makes him sound good... Check out the guy from Rush listen to yyz

dancetomdance182
12-17-2005, 11:15 PM
Neil Peart is sick also. The Yellowcard drummer is a lot like Travis.

HitHardDrums55
12-17-2005, 11:29 PM
im not a fan of neil peart (i think thats his name..guy from rush)...dont get me wrong, he's an amazing drummer! but i personally think his setup is WAY too big i think the 3 drummers alkaline trio has recorded with (glenn porter, mike felumlee, and derek grant) are extremely talented...theyre all really fast AND they add creativity to the stuff alk3 does...while travis barker on the other hand basically does the same style beat for more than half of their songs...ocassionally he'll throw in some latin or funk beat over a rock beat, and change up the bass drum...he does have good fills though...and he's only fast because he's been playing since he was 4 and he did almost everything possible for snare drum in high school that will definately build up some speed

so i hear mark can do slap bass pretty well?

12-18-2005, 02:11 AM

He slapped a little on one of the videos for the production of the nS/t album if i remember rightly, he seemd to be able to do it ok. Id expect him to be able to he's been playing bass for 15 years or something.

TakeWarning

As if Mark Hoppus would be any good at slap. And Neil Peart is an awesome drummer.

HitHardDrums55
12-18-2005, 12:48 PM
i know hoppus plays with a pick, but somebody on here said they saw a video of him playing slap bass and he was a lot better than people think since he has such simple bass lines with blink

and i never said neil peart wasn't an awesome drummer...actually i said he IS an awesome drummer...just said i dont like his setup, its too complex for my liking...but at least he knows how to rock a set that big

If you've been playing bass for 15 years, you at least know HOW to slap.... Even if you're not good at it. He uses a pick normally, so he's probably just average.

I think Josh Freese is Better than Travis, and that's still in the Pop-punk genre.

I agree about Tom's guitarring, and the view on pop-punk in general. As long as it sounds good, that's what really matters. R&Mers who jib on about 20 minute epic shred solos making a song are frankly wrong. (Oz, who am I talking about? ;))

I think it's funny how people come in here and diss the musical ability of Mark, Tom, or Travis when 1) None of you are successful professional musicians as far as I know, 2)The vast majority of you have probably never even tried to play in a band and therefore don't know how much work it takes, and 3) Mark, Tom, Travis and any other major musician doesn't give a crap what you think.

Just thought I'd put that out there.
I'm not insulting his ability to play. I'm merely saying he isn't as amazing as everyone says.

Ps. Your #2 is wrong, the vast majority of people here are musicians and therefore have at least jammed with other people. I know tons of people here who are in bands, and some of them have actually been quite successful.

And as for them not caring. Yes they do, of course they do, they wouldn't have released a Greatest Hits album like they did if they didn't want to make some more money out of it. And if they want to make money, they must care what people think. Plus Tom and all his boasting about how good AAA will be. I'm sure he must care.

1027z(Or whatever it is :p): I actually agree with you. For once.

Just because people aren't a professional at something doesn't mean you can't judge them. Your theory would also mean that, because I'm not a politician I can't judge the Prime Minister of my country and how he runs it. Because I'm not an Author, I can't judge a book that I've read. I'm sure you get my point.

its actually the record companies choice to make a greatest hits cd......and jsut for an example, afi got screwed over for it cause their record company made a GH cd for them and they werent planning to do that untill they were done with music.

i also think ppl should liten up, bands like blink 182 arent going to care what u say about their skill.......they've already made it to the big time so they dont have to worry about that ****, plus i imagine if tom was one of those guys who felt the need to rip a huge *** solo in every song, then they wouldnt be anywere near as popular as they are now.

but i do agree every1 is entitled to their own opinion, if u wanna say tom sucks at guitar then so be it there is nothing any1 can do about it but think about how much of an a-hole people are. OH, and one more think some of u guys should check the online vids blink 182 has on their sites..........it shows how amazing travis is i mean this guy has much style its unbeliveable! thats what alot of ppl dont realize, he takes so many diff aspects of the drums and uses so many of them but its hard to tell with guitar and bass over it

its not that hard to understand, but i mean being a drummer who can play by ear who has been studying drums for a long time and i have tons of drummer friends who have been playing longer than me who give me pointers...i think its safe to say that travis doesnt SUCK, but he's not quite as amazing as everyone seems to think he is...

lets put it this way: every blink song (including the ones with scott on drums) and boxcar racer song, and DEFINATELY every transplants song, and every aquabats song with travis on drums...i could figure them out the first few times i listened to them
now listen to josh freese with the vandals...he's a MUCH better drummer...he's just as fast as travis barker, does session work with many different people (basically anywhere between A Perfect Circle to Sting)
and Glenn Porter and Derek Grant with Alkaline Trio, or Mike Felumlee with Smoking Popes and Alkaline Trio...all three of those drummers have at least one song with alkaline trio that i have been working on for months/over a year...theyre all reallllllllly quick and smooth and have amazing beats and fills

and mark kind of sucks at bass as far as i know...im anxious to hear him with plus 44 to see if he'll bust out some crazy bass lines unexpected of him rather than just root notes

tom, i cant say he's good or bad i dont know anything about guitar...i like how his stuff sounds personally, but my brother could play every blink song ever recorded when he still played...so apparently he thought it was easy

dancetomdance182
12-21-2005, 09:19 PM
I can't really judge mark because I've never played with him or seen him solo..etc. But I do know that root notes did fit blink. Tom played basically the melody and Mark had the bass. He could have done a better job such as ading fills.

Mark could have made Blink's music just a little bit more interesting by occasionally adding a fill or something. Root notes fit in well, but other pop-punk bassists use fills and frankly it gives the music a little more dimension.

Honestly, marks playing fits blinks style. I mean he practically was the bassist and rythym guitarist in one when they played live. He has to play quick as. No one can really add interesteing fills when you play that quick. And on another hand, i saw mark playing bass in this video when he was sitting on a couch, and he was slapping and popping and stuff. He also has eally good technique for a punk bassist.:thumb:

Dude ranch has some cool bass lines, not neccesarily hard bass lines but cool ones, e.g Boring, Josie, Emo, Apple Shampoo, Degenerate etc.

And some other cool ones:

Marlbaro Man

I wasn't saying you couldn't discuss it, I was just saying that people's comments like "Mark sucks at bass" were getting kind of old. Until yesterday or the day before, I hadn't been here in like 2 weeks at least and I still saw a comment like that every page or so.

Ps. Your #2 is wrong, the vast majority of people here are musicians and therefore have at least jammed with other people. I know tons of people here who are in bands, and some of them have actually been quite successful.
I was referring more to a working band that makes their own music, plays shows regularly and/or say has some kind of record deal. I'm pretty sure those numbers are a bit smaller than everyone who has hit a few bass notes or whatever while their buddies were playing.

And as for them not caring. Yes they do, of course they do, they wouldn't have released a Greatest Hits album like they did if they didn't want to make some more money out of it. And if they want to make money, they must care what people think. Plus Tom and all his boasting about how good AAA will be. I'm sure he must care.
No, they don't care. They want you to listen, but they don't care if you think they suck or don't deserve to be where they're at. That's what I was getting at, and Mark has said so before.

Just because people aren't a professional at something doesn't mean you can't judge them. I didn't say they didn't deserve it. They do. If they can make music that appeals to the masses like they have then all the power to them. I'm saying that you can't not care. ...No it wasn't. I'm not trying to start an argument here, but I'm going to try and explain this one more time. They care about success and having fans and all of that, but they do not care about the opinions of people who don't listen to and/or don't like them for whatever reason. It's kind of uncomforatable listening to a song with sexual innuendos around them, but they actually like the same kind of music I do, so they probably feel exactly the same way.

A few pages ago there was talk about swearing in Blink songs an TMTATS and I have a few stories about that. When I got that cd I was always afraid of my mom finding it but she never did but my friend's mom did and made him delete all the Blink songs off of his ipod. Then this other kid in my class was singing family reunion in class and he was singing the words really loud and the teacher heard him and made him stay after class. He got out of it by pretending to cry and saying he was sorry a whole bunch of times. But now my mom knows that I have Blink songs that aren't edited on my ipod but she doesn't care because she knows that if she makes me delete them on my ipod I will just get them from my friends again.

my parents wouldnt make me delete them cause im from australia where sex and swearing can be shown on tv and they dont try and shade it from kids as much as they do in america....even though they show war and other disgusting more emotionally scaring and social un acceptable things on the news at 5 oclock..

It's pretty stupid really. I was never really shaded from it but I turned out fine. Maybe a few more ****s, ****s and bite mes though..

Half an hour until the countdown finishes for me.
I'm guessing it's either another song, various clips of many songs, or lots of information about the album.
Or possibly a video of some sort, featuring studio footage and many clips of songs and stuff.

Either way, I cannot wait until midnight.

I don't really think they'd just put a countdown up randomly.
I really want to hear more of their stuff, No It Isn't, although not amazing, is really fun to listen to, because it is new stuff involving Mark.
Same with AVA, I will love it, just because it's Tom.

I don't think it's possible for me to dislike either of these bands, because I always used to be obsessed with Blink, and Mark and Tom were some of my first idols. Even if I rarely listen to them anymore, I will always love them.
