View Full Version : Official Blink 182 Thread

the average record would have about between 8-14 songs.... i dunno if your in a band but to wright practice and perfect 16 songs takes a long time
Are you kidding me? John Frusciante recorded 6 albums within a single year, and each song was recorded in hi-fi. Guess how long it took him to arrange and record each album? 4, 3, or even 2 days.
Trust me, that's blink 182's problem-- there's zero spontaneity with their work and total overproduction. It's just very processed, forced, not... free or spontaneous or innovative at any point in time.
Sure, they can write songs that some people enjoy, they can "mature" musically (which doesn't mean a whole lot, I'm not sure why that word is emphasized so often), but they can not innovate. Come out with something interesting, innovative, etc.
But dude, if you consider the amount of songs a factor on an album, or the length of the songs, or whatever, then your concept/attitude regarding music is distorted.
-------------------
But anyways, I've just read the first few pages of this thread (and, granted, it's from 5 months ago), but it's so weird how their fans have the need to overdramatize everything. Or make such pre-conceived, naive assumptions, as far as why they broke up or who they are as people and whatever. Here's what I think: Each fan has a preconceived idea/assumption of what type of people blink are, how they respond to eachother, what their personal lives are like, etc.
But let me tell you this, that a magazine/internet article or 20 second interview clip is NOT an insight on their lives.
But also, quit overdramatizing this. If you cared about music, you'd realize how much there is to be heard and what a small deterrance this is to music as a whole.
So... do I dislike the band? No, I dont listen to them, but I dont dislike them. But their fans just take everything at face value and are so one-dimensional with their take on music, I dont know.

I agree with alot of stuff you said there, but you say you don't listen to blink? Then how can you say there's no spontaneity and that they can't innovate?
Listen to them before you judge and make comments like that

im saying to wright 16 songs practice them and perfect them and record it takes long time usually ..... whoever this john guy congrats to him... but pluss 44 has been around like 6 months about and yer i think it woulda been tuff with atticus fsas going on to have time to do all this .....

You don't have to listen to a band to discuss them.
Blink breaking up, and these new projects is something to talk about even if you don't listen to them.

That exact thing "Tom's sister" posted is the exact thing that I got in an e-mail from Geffen not even 3 days ago. Anyone could find a picture of the Delonge family and could be from California. For all I know it could be an old man trying to get with all the blink fan boys.
I have a question for you. Are you illiterate?

In saying that I don't "listen to blink," it means that I wouldnt go and put them in my cd player or on my pc or in a car to listen to.
I dont think that anyone survived 1999 without hearing All the Small Things at least a dozen times... plus I received another album as a gift a while back. And I was also a fan at one point in time.

my mate up in sydney just goes dude look what i found....
ino she could be a fake easily but i think its true for these reasons
1. she only has 94 friends a fake usually gives there myspace out and try to get more
2. i clicked on her friends comments they were all from southern cali asking her questions about what she was doin tonight and so on....
3. at no place does it display her last name we only new it was her because in her pictures section theres a but which says "extended family" and theres a pic of her whole family and theres tom in it... i searched google and couldnt find this picture...
4. her name is keri obviously we no tom sisters name is keri....
5. she has a pic of her on the taking back sunday tour which blink toured with

I'm pretty pumped for the Angels and Airwaves album. Expecting big things. I'm ex[ecting a very different sound from the Tom I'm used to though. It's described as "rock-n-roll revolution" so it's got to be awesome to be hyped up that much. Excited :D

Tom clearly wants to progress musically, but keep his child-like ego intact. I think that's just his way of saying it will be awesome, and he obviously meant for people not to take if literally.
Plus 44 will be better than AAA I think, because of how their sound has been described. Still, I'm curious to hear both before I judge completely
10571z
09-22-2005, 08:30 AM
i actually think ava will be better.... just because i far enjoy male singing voices.. better than a females.. but yeh its gunna be awsome
It depends how the girl's voice sounds. Straylight Run, Cruiserweight, The FIght (To an extent), The Donnas, they all have good female singers. I think it will be more interesting because we won't know what to expect from her voice, nor the music. AAA, I can almost already imagine the sound, considering 3 members are from Blink, Alkaline Trio and The Offspring

Well Tom always used to be my fave member, he is what made me play guitar, and I always thought he was the funniest member.
But recently I have started to like Mark a lot more, I think he is the funniest member and he seems a better person than Tom sll round. I can imagine Tom starting a fight with someone, but Mark is too kind.
I have never really liked Travis, he is a great drummer, but not such a great person. He is the opposite of Mark and Tom. He never jokes, and recently he has been acting as if he does not want Blink to reform and he tries to act all gangster.

travis barker is a stupid *******. in some ways ur write about mark but i can relate to a hell of a lot of boxcar racer. the way tom and mark got rid of scott was out of order so i dont think tom is perfect but i do have a lot of respect for him
I really don't have a favourite. I like both Tom and Mark equally. I like both of their voices and they are great at writing lyrics. I'm excited for AVA and Plus 44 because it's the closest I'm going to get of Blink ever again.
As fo Travis, I can't really stand him. I find all he's about is being really rich. He's an alright drummer, not the best, but alright. He seems way to quiet, how he has a reality tv show, beats me. We have enough reality tv shows and we really don't need one on Travis, quiet life.
But, if I had to choose between Mark, Tom and Scott, it would be the hardest, I don't know Scott that much, but I think he was an alright guy, he was just an alcoholic. I think if Scott was in the band, Blink might still be together. I could be wrong, but their biggest mistake was choosing Travis without looking at others.
Sorry, I kinda went off the whole "Favourite Band member is" topic, anyways care on.

Mostly Because I'm not a fan of Tom's actual singing. I listen to Blink for Mark's Songs on Vocals.
I do however think AVA will be better than Plus 44, just because I'm not a big fan of female singers, and I think Atom Willard is an amazing drummer.
I have a feeling Plus 44 will suck. Hopefully not though. Sucky bands are no fun.

My favourite is Tom. I saw them live and Mark was a bit of a dick to his bass tech. I think Travis is a good bloke. You watch the Urethra Chronicals DVD's and he says some funny stuff, he's just generally quieter than the others. I think he's a better drummer than Scott, but that's not to say Scott isn't good. Tom's my favourite all round. I love his guitaring, I know it's nothing flash but I love it anyway. Songs like Carousel are fantastic. Even as a person, from what I've seen, I just prefer him to Mark.

Either awesome or crap. They will either contrast just enough or too much, with Mark's deep voice and a woman's higher voice. I don't see what drums have to do with vocals but sure..

Plaidbassbilly (I hate calling people by their usernames, but I don't know your name so I apologize) I know what you mean. AAA has been so hyped but Plus 44 hasn't had much talk at all. Which is really saying something because they've been in the open much longer than AAA.

Haha, I know. Five bands is a little insane. So far his bands have been good for the most part. In my opinion:
blink-182 = 4 / 5
Box Car Racer = 3.5 / 5
Transplants = 3 / 5
/2,500 :smash:

Anyways. I'm out for the night. Later Brian.

Which side project would this be?
Plaidbassbilly (I hate calling people by their usernames, but I don't know your name so I apologize) I know what you mean. AAA has been so hyped but Plus 44 hasn't had much talk at all. Which is really saying something because they've been in the open much longer than AAA.
It's Bianca
I got an email from Kerrang magazine (the British one I think), and it had a little article on Tom in it, here's a link:
http://www.kerrang.com/nav?page=kerrang.news.detail&fixture_news=3265899
It's pretty much the same as the other AAA statements except he says that "we will find out very soon" why Blink went on hiatus. Sorry if this has been posted already but I don't remember reading it.

More info about the album:
- A single and video will be released before the album (Not sure which though)
- There will be a limited edition collectors edition in a box which comes with a DVD full of the band's videos (And probably a few extras I'd think)

Honestly I don't think this was Blink's idea, I suppose this is just one of those prices you have to pay if you are a big band on a major label

Oh cool, yeah I dont think teh Blink guys have had much to do with the Greatest Hits album at all.
For me it would be
Blink- 10/10
Box Car Racer- 8/10
Transplants- 2/10
To be honest I think The Transplants is bull****, and to make it worse, Travis seems to put them as a bigger priority than Blink at the moment and for the rest of his life. The way he talks, 'Blink is over' 'I want to do something fresh and new' it seems as if he is tired of Blink and their music.

He probably is tired of them. He's done 3 albums and a live album. He probably thinks that's enough. Especially when he has like 3 other side projects.
You can't really blame him though. I mean, this is a man who is one of the best pop-punk drummers of our generation, and he;s stuck playing the same songs. Transplants aren't as bad as people make out, it's just they are more experimented than Blink.
Also, Travis has been involved in Transplants for a long time, even before the first album. He and Tim used to go to his basement a lot and just make beats and songs I think. My history on Blink is a little brushed up at the moment

Boring is the ONLY Blink song that I dont really like.

I actually perfer Take Off Your Pants and Jacket over all their albums. Then I think Enema comes in a close second. It would be hard rate the others, but those are my two favourites.

I keep going on and off about listening to Box car. Sometimes i can't be arsed to listen, but other times it's amazing to listen to. It's quite like that with s/t too.
From BCR by far, for me the best song is 'There is'. I heard it a while before i realised BCR had formed and thought it was Blink for a while... It kinda said a lot to me when i first heard it, that's why it's my favourite i guess. All of their songs are amazing and listenable to. I fell in love with the album quite soon after a few listens.

Yeah, I like that one, plus Watch The World, and The End With You.

there is = great
i feel so = INCREDIBLY AMAZING
Watch The World is my favourite. There Is was the first I had heard and probably one of the better tracks, even if the lyrics are a little cheesy.
Edit: Better?

Emo is stuff like Hot Cross.

Hence the quotations. I know what emo is. I listen to it.

found this on a essay site
“Blink182 is not a sellout” Despite popular opinion, the band Blink182 is not a sellout. Many fans of punk rock condemn the band for it’s success and radio play. If making it big is selling out, then, who would not sell out? An individual on a message board posted, “ I agree that blink182 is horrible, but I am sick of hearing kids refer to bands as sellouts. Who gives a f___? I will listen to any band as long as it sounds good to me“ ( pop ). The fact is, the term sellout is applied too freely and is a hyperbole. A true sellout is something blink182 is not. Selling out is changing dramatically and going against ones fans for worldly pleasures such as money and fame.

That essay is stupid and wrong.
Btw to keep on topic, I've been playing some Blink182 on guitar today. It had been a long long time since last time (excuse the redundance). I love the "solo" to Carousel.

Blink have never changed there music style there newer album is a bit more mature and experimental and they didnt know if people would like it, so thats not selling out, only if they new people would buy it then maybe.

Dude Ranch ---> Enema Of The State.
Selling Out.
It's not a bad thing, it just happens, get over it.
The definition that person gives of a sell-out is a little sketchy... I wouldn't really say Blink sold out. They just matured, besides, they were really popular before they changed their sound.

When you listen to Dude Ranch, then Enema of the State, you can easily tell it's the same band. Same sound, same style, just a little more polish on the latter. That's not selling out.

No, I just think his definition of a sell-out at the end isn't accurate.

It is to change their sound to get more pop friendly.
When you listen to Americana, then CO1 you can easily tell it's the same band. Same sound, same style. A little more poppy on the latter. To change it that way is selling out. And to not sell more albums that way is being even laughable, and I LOVE The Offspring.

They were already pretty big beforehand.

Change "selling out" to a "personal career decision", then I agree with you. Even musicians have to eat, and would like to strive to be on top of their industry.

I said it's not a bad thing. But changing your thoughts, your actions and your music just to fit what the public likes is what both bands did. If that's not selling out please god come here and tell us what is it.

Unless I'm misunderstanding you, you think the Offspring sold out, and I'd have to disagree. Either way, This is the blink thread, so i won't argue in here. I do love you for loving the offspring though, they're my favorite band.
And now we have Offspring + Blink + Distillers + Box Car Racer. It's almost like an all star team.

I personally can't wait for Angels and Airwaves. Tom's talked it up quite a bit but I think he has reason too. Thinking of these songs: I feel so, there is (pretty much the entire boxcar racer album actually), Time to break up, what went wrong (such a great song), and alot of the ones on self-titled, especially always which is my favourite song of all time and shows Tom's true song writing ability (if he did write it that is). I don't know if Tom wrote these songs, but it seems like his style so I think he wrote the majority of those songs.
I think Blink's music has only gotten better over the years aswell, so I think Angels and Airwaves will be huge, at least to blink fans. This is just my personal opinion, so don't go mocking me if you think i'm completely wrong.

I'm arguing that they didn't really change anything as far as style goes, which they didn't. Therefore, they didn't sell out.
Anyways, I hope AAA doesn't turn out to be a disappointment.

I always get that and Letters To God mixed up, because in Letters To God he goes "and i, i won't lie..." in the chorus.
Anyway, I think the best song is The End With You or Sorrow.

I'm sorry to inform you The Offspring are playing just for the money. How could you explain their ****ty greatest hits album, the fact that they totally forgot their 2 first albums, because "people won't like them, they're not enough poppy" in words of noodles, or the news about a marketing study they did about the names in albums and songs to make them increase the sales posted in their official site?
The same with Blink 182 although I can't provide you information about that since I don't like them that much.
I'm arguing that they didn't really change anything as far as style goes, which they didn't. Therefore, they didn't sell out.
And I've said with this 3 times they changed their sound to a more poppy side just to fit what the public wants and get more money therefore they sold out. Of course the style is the same, it has still punk influences but you can't deny they've gone poppier.

Well obviously they've gotten poppier cos pop means popular. But if you are meaning the modern definition of pop, then I still dont think so. Yes they changed a little bit, and so does every band on every album, you cant play the exact same over and over through the whole of your career. One of the main reasons people say they sold out on Enema is because of the 'Cleaner production' of the major labels. If they recorded Enema with the same production as dude ranch, I doubt the same amount of people would be saying they sold out.

This is exactly what I am trying to say. If blink had started as say an indie band and then went pop-punk for the fame, then yeah, that would be selling out. They didn't do that though, they were a pop-punk band from the beginning.

Man I think you guys just don't get it. I don't say they sold out because they changed their sound. Thiusands of bands change their sound and a lot of these bands also do it to a poppy side. The point is not a change of sound but a change of sound in order to. Blink 182 didn't change their sound because they felt like evolving musically, they did it because they wanted to be popular. Why if not did they all of a sudden avoid any kind of complication in their music, why did they wan to be on MTV, why did Mark and Tom let Travis convince them to be poppier? I already said this isn't a bad thing but it has a name: selling out. Letting your ideals slip in order to make mone. I'd probably do the same but don't try to make like if they didn't just because you are a fanboy.

I have to admit, they made their songs less complicated and more poppier. But you are absolutely correct, they were always a pop-punk band.

What ideals did they espouse exactly? As others have said, they were already popular before EOTS and lets not forget that for the next two or three years, they tried attracting as much attention to punk in general as possible.
I believe that selling out exists, and there are perfect examples of it *cough* Anti-Flag *cough*. I don't think blink and some other bands really qualify because like I said earlier, they were always a pop-punk band. Yes, they were punk musically and toured with some serious punk-bands, but they have always fallen on the pop-side which appeals to a wider audience.
I'm not defending them just because I like them, I'm just tired of hearing the term "sell-out" thrown around everytime a band gets even remotely popular. It's gotten to the point where I have a friend or two who have stopped listening to bands they loved because and I quote, "Too many people like them now" or "They got too popular".
