ZING
I knew a time would come when I could post this.
Things that Bill Gates would change if he was from Alabama:
1. They would be called "Winders95, WindersNT, and Winders 3.1".
2. Instead of the hour glass wait icon, you'd get an empty beer bottle.
3. Occasionally you'd open a winder that was covered with a hefty bag and duct tape.
4. Dialog boxes that give you the choice of "Yes, No, or Cancel" would now read "Ahh-right, Naw, or Git".
5. Instead of the "Ta-da" sound when opening Winders, you would now hear the "Dueling Banjos".
6. The "Recycle Bin" in Winders95 would now be called "Out-House".
7. When you open the sound player, you would hear a digitized drunk yelling "Freebird".
8. Powerpoint would now be known as "Parpawnt".
9. Microsoft's programming tolls would be "Vishul Basic" and "Vishul C++".
10. The Winders95 logo would be the Confederate Flag.
11. Instead of the title "VP", Microsoft big shots will be called "Cuz".
12. Hardware could be repaired using parts from an old Trans Am or a Chevy truck.
13. Four words: Daisy Duke Screen Saver.
14. "Well, next thing ya know ol' Bill's a billionaire......"
15. Flight Simulator game would be replaced by Tractor Pull Simulator.
16. Microsoft's CEO: Bubba Gates.

My dad got it from one of his friends who works in the circus...in turn, he bought it in Mexico for 10 bucks. That's how we got Microsoft Office as well. :p
Yes, big headphones. I need to drown out everything around me in order to edit sound.

When I saw the Blue Man Group in New York they asked if anyone had any requests, and someone said Freebird. They actually played like 10 seconds of it...
Hehe. I was jamming with my band in my friend's garage and his mom came out and told us to play freebird.
Hehe, at a Battle of the Bands comp at my University, I heard (out of 10 bands) no less than 4 different versions of Freebird and 3 different versions of Enter Sandman. :p

I remember when I was about 13 or 14, it was late at night, my buddies and I were hangin' out, and all of a sudden, somebody shouted "DUDE! Let's TP (my ex girlfriend)'s house!" and everybody was like "OH HELL YES!", everybody including me, because, well to be honest she was quite the bitch. But anyway, we got like five 12-roll packs and headed on out to her house. We completely covered the house and trees and cars in TP, but one of my friends thought it'd be a great idea to turn on the hose and spray a bunch of toilet paper onto the windows, because it would be stuck in the morning, but apparently, the family was still up because they just got home an hour earlier from an Angels game, because right when he started to do that, the ex's dad opens the door, says in a deep angry voice "HEY", and we're all like, "EVERY MAN FOR HIMSELF!"...good times, great memories.

I've had some fairly weird experiences with TPing. But mainly on the side of giving, not recieving.
What movies did you see DM?

Okay, as I guess most of you guys will be aware, some bands were a little contentious when it comes to 'modern rock'. Here are the ones that accumulated enough votes to get in, but that still might be hotspots. Can I please get some opinions on whether they should be allowed in or not?
Korn
Rammstein
Green Day
Kyuss
System Of A Down

I'm going to Tucson, Arizona to visit my girlfriend in four days. :so excited:
Unfortunately, she's gonna wake me up at 5:30 AM to go to her dumb work-out club on at least one of the days I'm there. :-/
System of a Down should certainly be included. The others I'm concerned about: especially with Green Day, Tool and to a lesser extent Korn I'm concerned about fanboys ruining the poll.
I have no real opinion on Rammstein or Kyuss.

I say no to all, to be honest. I can foresee fanboyism with Tool (and weren't they part of the metal competition, anyway?), and the others aren't really as modern rock as what I think your competition is looking for. Kyuss and Green Day are "maybes" (I lean towards Kyuss moreso than Green Day), but certainly not SOAD, Rammstein, Korn, or Tool.

Yeah, I got my other band (the thrash one) on the list for the local band compilation, so yeah, it'll be soon.
Good news, though, my other bandmates are embracing old Children of Bodom and want to adopt more of a style like that instead of It Dies Today, so I'm happy...

Hey, Cain, as long as I'm thinking of it, I turn to you for some advice.
I'm trying to find some (comparitively) easy Satch songs, but am turning up nill so far.
I could also use some songs that would be good for practicing tapping. I'm so dominantly left-handed that it's giving me a lot of problems. The main reason I ask you is because you're the least likely to suggest something like Metallica, since you know my tastes better than that.
Yea, plus that show is 55 bucks.
I hear that Zakk really tears it up live, and this is at a small club.
My recommendation would easily be for the Black Label show. You're likely to have a drunken headbanging time there, and Zakk is undeniably a top-notch player.
EDIT: Steerpike: Well, Satriani really isn't much of a tapper, to be perfectly honest. He taps about the same amount as he alternate picks, which is just about never these days. The only tapping lick he pulls is really the one where he taps a trill with the side of his pick, holding the edge perpendicular to the fretboard. His legato style is one where his left hand carries all the notes around Holdsworth style, like a "ball of mercury," is how he describes it. It's also my primary soloing influence: slippery slides, position changes, and exclusively hammering on and pulling off are all Satch trademarks.
The first Satch song I learned was "Up in the Sky," off Crystal Planet, because that was based around a killer riff: the solo isn't much to freak out over. After that...I'm not really sure. To be honest, every Satch legato lick became easy after I learned the crazy descending run in "Rubina," because he pretty much reuses that same style of position shifting and playing whenever he embarks on a legato run. "Always with Me, Always with You" has a pathetically easy tapping thing in it, and "Raspberry Jam Delta V" has a REVERSED tapping lick, in which the right hand frets the B note on the G string (fourth fret) and Satch uses his left hand to hammer-tap notes higher up on the G and B strings with the B notes acting as pedal tones. Nice and show-offy.
But Satch is really not a good tapper. A far more virtuosic tapper is Steve Vai, but a ton of his runs are ridiculously convoluted and hard to keep track of. What I tend to do is tap along the scale while I'm doing an average legato thing on the left, so it's like some "super legato" thing. And to be honest, the best example I could give you for this type of thing is probably Reb Beach of the band Winger, or perhaps some Andy Timmons.
That mean yes or no?
It means no, unlettered one!
Iai:
Korn: Nu-METAL
Rammstein: Industrial METAL
Green Day-just no
Kyuss-actually haven't heard them
System Of A Down-again I think they're metal, though they are awesome
Tool-yes

Tool are hard to place. If this was best Modern band in the A&I forum, I'd say, yeah go for it. But the fact is, they aren't completely rock or metal. It's hard. Maybe a yes, though, if they weren't in the metal bands poll.

EDIT: The reason this question is hard for me to answer is because I've been tapping almost since I started playing, because I don't play with a pick and tapping was the easiest really fast, show-offy thing that I could do. It sounds lame, but I learned about tapping and got my primary chops by learning Van Halen songs like Eruption and Ice Cream Man.
I should really check out some Satriani.
I just tend to get bored with that type of music easily.

Well, that helps a little. Guess the best exercise would be to just tap scales until my right-hand digits stop locking up.
I get so tired of having to explain over and over again when people tell me how easy tapping is what it means to be as dominantly left-handed as I am. As soon as I finish explaining, they fall completely silent, leaving me to wonder just what they're thinking.

To give you a rough idea of what it's like, picture trying to play your guitar when the third and fourth fingers of your fretting hand cannot move independently. That would be me playing left-hand guitar.
Furthermore, the muscles in your non-dominant hand are so underdeveloped, that the joints keep locking and slipping because the muscles and tendons aren't strong enough to create the proper manual dexterity. I can't properly form a fist with my right hand without uncomfortably stretching the tendons in my knuckles.
Does that help give you an idea of what I have to deal with? My picking is almost entirely based on my wrist, and strumming on my elbow because my hand is so woefully under-developed and never seems to get better despite the exercises I put it through.
I got negged for double posting.
Tender never negged me for that, he just banned me the one time.
He's repped me twice so far: that's how I've gotten the bulk of my rep. None of the other mods (except for Aes820) have seen fit to do so yet. Probably because I don't report anybody or hang out in Site forum, or venture far beyond R+M and Politics.
EDIT: Steerpike: that's rough. The only thing I can suggest is more practicing. :)

I forgot about Midnight. That song is killer: I played it at a campus show with my friends and people were pretty impressed.
I mentioned AWMAWY. Satch Boogie has a neat tapping thing too, true enough. But you have to admit, Satch doesn't do it with anywhere near the proficiency and level of someone like Vai.
"Circles" has a ton of tapping in the solo, too. And it's a fairly catchy tune, although the transition from the rock part to the clean part is kinda iffy.

Midnight is pretty easy to play, it looks like a daunting task when you look at it, but in all reality it is fairly easy when you dive into it.
Ya, tapping may not be his thing, but he isn't bad at it. People like Micheal Romeo make him look like childs play when it comes to tapping though heh.
Anyway you look at it though, Satch is awesome.

Of course.
They are a wall of symphonic extreme black metal noise that competes with Emperor in that aspect. Symphonic wall of noise bands are awesome at being intense, which is great when you are in the mood for it.
Good band, to bad I only have one album.

My picking is almost entirely based on my wrist, and strumming on my elbow because my hand is so woefully under-developed and never seems to get better despite the exercises I put it through.
hmm.
I'm left-handed, and play a lefty guitar.
Generally I find that my fingers induvidually are more co-ordinated on my right, but as a whole the left-hand is more co-ordinated.
Of course.

Yeah, I know. Satch restrains himself to a degree, as you and I have both argued in many a shred-bashing thread.
And I agree, Satch is indeed awesome.
EDIT: Midnight is a great example of Jeff Beck's self-proclaimed favorite guitar playing style: "I like stuff that sounds really hard but is actually really easy." And in Midnight you have an added bonus of it looking hard, too.

I'm just in one of those moods. I just had to reset my computer again because it was acting up, which means my modem is hokey again, which means no uploads for tomorrow's spotlight until about Monday.
I've come to really hate Dell. It's gotten to the point where asking this computer to perform the simplest of tasks (such as "go back one page in browser") causes it to lock up. It's like the technological equivalent of a man who's never eaten a vegetable in his life trying to take a dump.

Ever thought about getting a teacher to help you out?
In time you will get better, just a teacher could help you reach the point faster. And don't think about messing up because when playing the guitar, that is exactly what you will do if you keep thinking that way.
Also about your comp, do a full reformat on it, it should clear up all those stupid little problems like that.
Wormed vocals : Yes they are quite bad, but they are kinda high in the mix and it kinda drowns out the good insturmentals in the background.

I've taken a few minutes to calm down. Sorry about my attitude tonight. As I said, I've been wrestling with this computer all night and it's putting me in a bad mood.
Next time I go off on one of these little emo rants, I think it would be better if no one paid any attention to me until I start talking and acting rationally again. Once I get pissed, it's a complete Jeckyll and Hyde. I'm starting to feel like an asshole for all the pointless melancholy bitching I've done lately. If anything, it's just counterproductive.
So, again, sorry for my surliness and pessimism. I just need to shut my trap and learn some tact in the future.

Korn - I would let them in, but some people may claim that they are metal
Rammstein - meh, a little too metal in my eyes
Green Day - no
Kyuss - Stoner rock = modern rock
System Of A Down - See Korn
Tool - I say let them in since they werent in the metal polls

There is no way that Tool and System of a Down shouldnt be aloud. Before I listened to them I thought they were metal from what I had heard, but now I realize that they arent metal at all.
Rammstein is Metal, Green Day no because they arent really Rock at all and Kyuss I have never heard. No to KoRn they are metal.

That song is so freaky. Ever since I saw Deliverance I have been freaked out by that song.
Naw.
They have and always will be lame.
Bands like Strapping Young Lad and Mnemic are doing music that Fear Factory can only fathom of creating in their sleep.
They are serioulsy one of the worst metal bands in my book, so god damn boring, especially live. I almost fell asleep during their set when I saw them with Cob and LoG. Their music and their vocalist lacks any feeling, I could not even mosh to the stuff, yet I see all these other people freak out and go crazy because FF is on, especially my fanboy friend.

Cheer up Alex! I understand how you feel. I've been constantly experiencing computer problems since I first bought this evil machine and they're just driving me crazy to the point of feeling totally down :(.
As for the guitar matter, my experience has been totally disappointing. I started with so many dreams and excitement only to find out a bit later that practice and actual progress require commitment and patience I didnt have. However, this Monday I'm starting practicing again and try to take it as seriously as possible. It's a torture to be such a huge fan of technical/progressive music and not to able to produce such sounds and emotions myself :upset:
Cheers for the help guys.
I've very recently implemented a strict 3-hour daily practise regime for my guitar playing. I've yet to see if it'll have any dramatic effect, but at least it feels like I'm doing something.

what do you exactly do when practicing?
Arucard
07-30-2005, 08:01 AM
Well, when i practice i practice all the basic stuff (hammer ons, pulls, trills and mutes) with a metronome for say, 15 minutes at a time, then i go and play songs such as Avenged Sevenfold : Reminissions and DragonForce : Valley Of The ****ed. I do that about twice a day.
But most of my time is spent writing, on average i will be writing and perfecting lyrics and songs for an hour or so a day, and then i have to practice drums as well.

That was Godzilla vs. Destroyer, made in 1995, in which Big G's nuclear heart or whatever inside him began to melt down. At the end of the movie, Godzilla melts down and is destroyed once and for all...in a totally badass scene.
But then they use the old "the radioactive energy brought Godzilla Jr. back to life!" gimmick, so there's still a Godzilla.

Nothing so dramatic. But I ended up choking when I accidentally snorted some chlorine water up my nose. God, did that suck.

About 10 years ago, my family was having one of our monthly movie nights. My parents were trying to play host to about 10 people in a small one-story house, so you can imagine it wasn't easy for them. I was in charge of watching my baby sister.
But then I had to go to the bathroom. She took that opportunity to escape from her room. I didn't know she left. An hour later, she turned up in the front yard carrying political signs and lawn ornaments from across the neighborhood under her arm.
And about 5 years before that... I can't believe I'm gonna tell you people this...
My family was eating out at Olga's restaurant in D.C. I went to the bathroom. For an hour. The men's room there was a single room that locked. So I tied up the bathroom for an hour. And I was singing. Loud enough for people about 20 feet from the door to hear.
The icing on the cake was the guy waiting at the door for 20 minutes before storming off in frustration for another restaurant's bathroom (this was at a mall). 30 seconds later, I come out all smiles and my parents are trying very hard to sink beneath everyone's notice.

It was supposed to be a belt that infused you with energy and made you super-strong.
My then-pre-adolescent father decided that electricity would be best for powering something up. Clever little scamp, wasn't he?
EDIT: All the adults I met liked me because I would walk around singing Tom Petty and Eagles songs, because that's what my dad would always have me listen to in the car on trips.
Most adults I met were spooked by me because they'd be having a decent conversation, look down, and realize it was with a three-year-old.
I went nearly two years without saying anything. I would just point and say, "Eh." That was how I communicated. Then, overnight I started speaking in complete sentences. I was perfectionist even back then.
EDIT to RCA: Well, would you look at that. Talking about my childhood and come up all 6's. I have to wonder if this is a coincidence or prelude to something more sinister.
Nice postcount there, 'Pike.

Cain, I managed to get mp3s and guitar tabs of the Satch songs you recommended. I did say comparitively easy, so I can't really complain.
But it did have me laughing and crying at the same time. There's no way in hell my right hand will be able to move that fast in the foreseeable future. Even my left hand is going to have a hard time with some of this. And the harmonics on the opening riff to Up In the Sky are completely out of the question. I can barely extract a pinch harmonic out of my D-string second fret.
(Sigh) This certainly does help with perspective, though. It makes me very glad I'm not trying to make a career off of music, because I would starve to death before the end of the year. :p

As am I. Dream Theater really ain't doing much for me anymore. I'm starting to think that their songwriting skills are indeed slipping by the wayside, because they've staked their reputation on fabulous technique and they are trapped between focusing more on one or the either, since they need both to be DT but they also need to enhance the songwriting to stay interesting.

Isn't Poly the school that didn't lose a single football game between 1992 and 2004 or something crazy like that? I don't think it is, but the name rings a bell.

So I have decided I am not going to go on the internet for a entire week so it isn't so high priorety in my life .Therefore I won't go on my computer as much and find more productive things to do with my life :).

Cool. I wouldn't mind directing/creating/producing/whatever music videos. I think I would make a pretty good director but I have no idea how to prove it.
You'd be surprised how simple it can be, really. All you need is a mini-DV camera, and a decnet computer and video editor.
I have this really cool idea for a music video for Sweet Miracle by Rush. In one particular scene when Geddy sings,"Swept beneath the surface," I want an overhead shot of myself walking through the gardens in front of the library at night and overlaying it with a rushing water effect shadow effect. As the verse goes on to "Lost without a trace/No hope at all, no hope at all," have the scene dissolve into the night sky.

It might be a different Poly, I'm talking about Long Beach Poly, but I doubt it, Los Al beat them last time we played I think. I'm not too good with sports.

I'm not sure if Long Beach Poly did, but they have one of the best athletic programs in California, hell, in the country. They're sponsored by Oakley.

I thought Poly beat Los Al at that game at Angel Stadium, I think it was for the state championship or regional championship.

It was De La Salle, I just looked it up. I was thinking Long Beach Poly because that was the team that came close to beating De La Salle a few times.

Oh yeah, they did.
It was regional I believe.
I went to that game too....

It had to have been regional. I read somewhere that California doesn't have a state high school football championship game.
