Guitar talk

I'm a fricken show off when it comes to playing guitar. I've been sweeping for about a year, and it's the funnest technique you can learn. I barely tap anymore because I like to sweep pick better than tapping arpeggios. Good times.

Speaking of good times, I've got my internet connection back and now I'm a happy camper. Except for the fact that I can't install AIM for some reason.

RCA

I've been practicing sweeping for about a year now, and I can do clean 4-string sweeps efficiently. I just need to practice them with different arpeggios.

A Metalcore guitarist, eh?

Not really. I guess it could be considered that. Stuff like Lamb of God, Unearth. Those two bands are the main influences for the music that I write for my band.

Sweep picking ain't too hard once you get the general idea. Once you figure out how to do it, angels descend from heaven and shower you in god light.

I do a lot of 3 string arps, but I'm proficient at 5 string arpeggios, too. Been doing a lot of diminished and minor 7th arpeggios as well.

EDIT: Slayer solos are the musical equivalent of barfs.

Not at all. I love Slayer solos, but Im not too fond on barf. Just because you dont like them doesnt make them barf.

I never do strings of sweeps, probably because my picking style makes it impossible. I tend to do quick ones. One of my favorite licks is this:

E-----------14h15p14---14---------------------------------------------------
B--------15-----------15---15------------------------------------------------
G-----16----------------------14s12h14p12s11h12h14p12p11--------------
D--14------------------------------------------------------------12---14~~~
A--------------------------------------------------------------------14--------
E-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Random stuff like that. Never Yngwie-style.

EDIT: Everybody post their most burning licks! :p R+M's Betcha Can't Play This.

I can't do sweeps at all. I don't understand how you can move that fast, or maybe I'm dragging my pick too fast.

Shred Danson
07-27-2005, 09:15 PM
Yeah, I tend to do sweeps more along the lines of

e-19p15----------15-20p17------------17---------------------------
B-------17----17-----------18-----18-------------------------------
G----------16------------------17----------------------------------
D-------------------------------------------------------------------
A------------------------------------------------------------------
E-------------------------------------------------------------------

But I'm also inspired by the way Alexi Laiho plays arpeggios.

e------------------12h17p12--------------------------------
B---------------13----------13--------------------------------
G-----------14----------------14-15-14-12-----------------------
D--------14--------------------------------15-14-12-----12-------
A-12h15----------------------------------------------15------------
E-------------------------------------------------------------------

I can sweep downwards, but I suck at coming back up, and I can't do anything more than a four string sweep really.

Shredding would be fun and all, but I just suck to much at self discipline to get to that point. It is hard to keep a routine of practicing and such and studying theory and such things, I always get bored of it. :\

Besides, over technical skill I would rather have good song writing ability by far.

RCA

I focus more on riff-writing than I do lead guitar skill, but I'm going to start building my chops more.

I agree with Bobo, songwriting is definitely what comes first.

I've started recording my own music. The first track I layed down didn't require any techinicality, and I was happy. So I don't think I need it that much, but then again I may need it for my band.

I have always been too lazy to play my bass so I am unfortunately terrible at it. I have been picking up my act over the last couple of weeks though and have started practising on a daily basis. I still can't quite get into theory and I find it really boring. I have discovered lately that I much prefer writing my own songs to learning a song by someone else. I have all capabilities to record but my sound card is buggered. So in analysis, I am a lousy bassist :):upset:

I have travelled back from ye olde shops of thy village and it was a perilous quest. I rode thee white horse to the enchanted land of co-op but whilst there I was forced by an evil warlock to give him all thy gold for thee 9v battery for my zoom pedal. After this defeat I realised that thy step brother's birthday approaches so galloped to the local alcohol shop and got him some of ye olde southern comfort. Ye plague was spreading fast through thy village so I gained pace and headed to ye olde card shop. Whilst at thy olde card shop I encountered a funny card with a penguin in the middle of Antartica falling over a banana skin (it is much funnier that it sounds). Allas I galloped home and into thy sunset, safe in the knowledge that I have accomplished everything I plan to do today.

Firecrackercheese (sorry i can't remember what your new name is, yes i'm retarded) - I have a Jordan Rudess album 4NYC, it is ok. 'My Thoughts' is an amazing song. Then there are some good songs. Then some not so good songs. And then one awful song called lamb chops where he mimicks nursery rhymes. But yeah, i think he wrote the stuff very quickly after 9/11 and he played the concert where the audio was obtained to make money for the firefighters of NYC.

I don't know if i have given the album a chance really, i found it a little boring with no songs to really catch my attention. Though rudess's talent does shine on this album, his control of the piano is amazing, it just shows me how good i could be if I could get motivated

I want linkage or something. 'Cause I've played for a while, I'm not that great, I was gonna take grade 8 but then i had issues with my teacher and couldn't really get motivated again. I'm just astonished at rudess' control with flow and dynamics. His stuff with DT doesn't show his talents at all imo.

Hmm petrucci plays about 21 notes per second in under the glass moon, that is insane. I doubt the jazz teacher matches him, why would he be a Jazz teacher if he could play like petrucci?

No Petrucci can play jazz because he knows theory. Jazz is more complicated in chord changes and voiceing than anything. The jazz teacher is also a session musician for studios all over the city. He's also been on world jazz tours tons of times. He can play anything and shred like none other just sitting there, and he's fat as hell too. Also it's not just any jazz teacher because I go to an arts school with tons of very talented musicians. He's also VERY respected in the Milwaukee jazz scene.

The reason he isn't doing bigger things is because he's past those years since he's getting old.

Jazz players can and will own John. And many other players are extremely better then Petrucci, he has just been blown out of proportion.

Also John went to Berklee to study Jazz mind you.

And speed wise, Rudess is nothing special as most people think he is so fast and such, but knowledge wise, that is another story.

Dream Theater is just an overrated band blown out of proportion. Yes, they do have technical skill, but they are not the best as alot of idiots make them out to be.

I didn't actually plan anything while I was there, everything that happened just happened, which is how I wanted it to be.

I stayed with one of my mom's sisters and her family (husband and four kids; one of them is 25 and has moved out, the other three are a son who is 21 and two daughters who are 20 and 17)

One thing that bugs me is how my youngest cousin's (the 17 year old) boyfriend treats her, but I dunno I guess I'm overreacting.

I went to the Yankees game today and it was awesome. We sat right behind the Twins bullpen, and when JC Romero was warming up I started yelling "JC you f*ucking suck"", then I get yelled at by the security guards and I had to stop.

Then when we were walking to Penn Station we passed Madison Square Garden. This guy came up to us and was like "hey, are you guys Knicks fans?". And I was like "Yeah I love the Knicks!"(even though I hate them and love the Cavs". Then he was like "you want to be on TV" and I said yeah.

So he interviewed me and my brother about the Larry Brown hiring and it was on tv on MSG at 9, but I didnt get on. My brother did though. Still a fun day today.

HA! Just got back from Gigantour. It was only the main stage bands: Nevermore, Fear Factory, then Megadeth.

Nevermore was great. They only played 5 songs, none of which I know, but I am now a fan from what I've heard. Fear Factory, was actually pretty lame. I only like Slave Labor and they didn't even play that song. But the singer tried getting the crowd into the music shouting, "Hey, hey, hey, hey" and probably only 20 people shouted back and after the song he gave us a speech about how we should be getting into the music and how the people shouting are the true fans. Screw them, in the middle of their set, me and my friend went behind the stage with our passes and got all the Megadeth members autographs and shook hands with them. It was great since Mustaine is one of my idols.

Dream Theater just killed, they played Pull Me Under, Lies, Panic Attack, and Fatal Tradgedy, they played more but those are the only ones I can remember, by the time they started playing the stadium was now almost filled, and everyone was getting into it. It was awesome.

Megadeth came out, opened with Blackmale the Universe. They played only 3 songs I couldn't recognize. Other songs were Hangar 18, Symphony of Destruction, Sweating Bullets, Skin of my Teeth, Tornado of Souls, Peace Sells...but Who's buying, Kick the Chair and Holy Wars...The Punishment Due. There was some pyrotechnics and it was just an awesome show. I think I have whiplash my neck is so sore.

Naw.

They have and always will be lame.

Bands like Strapping Young Lad and Mnemic are doing music that Fear Factory can only fathom of creating in their sleep.

They are serioulsy one of the worst metal bands in my book, so god damn boring, especially live. I almost fell asleep during their set when I saw them with Cob and LoG. Their music and their vocalist lacks any feeling, I could not even mosh to the stuff, yet I see all these other people freak out and go crazy because FF is on, especially my fanboy friend.

/doesn't get that band.

So some good news for you lads, first of all i finally transferred a lot of important mp3s to my computer, i.e. this hasnt been used in 11 months since ive been in germany and now it has a lot of music that has been released in that time, so if you guys want to downlaod anything from me from soulseek, can do. I know some of you wanted certain things, Stoic wanted !T.O.O.H.!, and for some reason im thinking Ollie wanted something, but not totally sure on that one. So you can get it from me on Soulseek: NJMetalMeister, or you can leave me a request somewhere and Ill just make a zip and YSI as my upspeed here no longer blows goats!

With that in mind, and the triumphant return of Metal Archives, expect a new thread from me probably later today.

Also i need some opinions, as I cant decide which computer case to buy. I have narrowed it down to two:

I remember when I was about 13 or 14, it was late at night, my buddies and I were hangin' out, and all of a sudden, somebody shouted "DUDE! Let's TP (my ex girlfriend)'s house!" and everybody was like "OH HELL YES!", everybody including me, because, well to be honest she was quite the bitch. But anyway, we got like five 12-roll packs and headed on out to her house. We completely covered the house and trees and cars in TP, but one of my friends thought it'd be a great idea to turn on the hose and spray a bunch of toilet paper onto the windows, because it would be stuck in the morning, but apparently, the family was still up because they just got home an hour earlier from an Angels game, because right when he started to do that, the ex's dad opens the door, says in a deep angry voice "HEY", and we're all like, "EVERY MAN FOR HIMSELF!"...good times, great memories.

Rebel Without a Crew is turning out ot be one of the best purchases I've made in a while. Very inspiring.

Whilst thinking of movies, I've had to revise my plan. The editing software I want is PC exclusive, so there goes the PowerBook idea. However, a little research into the matter showed that Gateway notebooks are less expensive and every bit as reliable. So now I'm saving up for a Gateway notebook, Adobe Premiere Pro editing suite, and a set of headphones.

BIG headphones?

Adobe kicks epic ***...nice choice.

My dad got it from one of his friends who works in the circus...in turn, he bought it in Mexico for 10 bucks. That's how we got Microsoft Office as well. :p

How is it "weird"?
Because your cousin is actually your half-brother, which totally confuses me.
