My god. I have created a monster. I think if I had restricted my vanity, I could have saved the forum a lot of personalised threads...

I'm not sure whether it is a good or bad thing, though...

---------------------------------------------------

So! Guess who worked 11.5 hours yesterday? Yep, moi. For a whopping A$200, I went to the Great Barrier Reef, snorkelled, made friends with this awesome couple from Yorkshire, became the idol of this little boy called Harry from Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, taught Yumi and Shun basic Aussie phrases (No worries, etc), and even saw a whale and a pod of dolphins up close. Plus, I won a free beer, thanks to my fanboyism of Pink Floyd.

So, Caroline and John are from North Yorkshire, and area about 20 or so. Great people. Friendlier than the English bastards on MX, no doubt. :p I started talking to them when Yumi (one of my students) was scuba diving. We played Top Trumps with Harry, a 5 year old extrovert from Newcastle. It was brilliant.

The reason I won the beer is that one of the crew members of the ship we took to the reef played guitar and sang in addition to securing the boat. He was really talented, which suprised me. Anyways, he said, "time for some trivia. Whoever can tell me who wrote this song, not recorded, but wrote, gets a free drink". And then he played the opening chords of Another Brick In The Wall (Part 2). Someone shouted out Pink Floyd, but he shook his head and said "Who wrote it?". Meanwhile, I stood up and started shouting Roger Waters. But I was lost in a sea of "David Gilmour!". Finally I started waving my arms and shouting "Roger Waters!" And I won.

---------------------------------------------------

Well, my mother finally returned from Europe. I picked her up from the airport at 4am. Fun! She had a great time, and took over 300 pictures. I also scored in the gift compartment. I got:

Designer clothes from Paris and Venice.
Two albums from the Virgin Superstore in London (Blue Oyster Cult - Super Hits, and Rolling Stones - Tattoo You)
An official Renault F1 shirt from the showroom on the Champes De Elyse (sp?)
An official Ferrari Racing T-shirt from the original factory in Rome.
A Paris University sweatshirt.
And! A new hunting knife from a castle in Germany. Mum tried to get something related to Hellmuth, but was told she was in the wrong part of Germany. So she got me this dagger instead. I'll upload a pic soon.

And that is my updated life.

3. Plexi has been missing from the internet for over a month now. Plexi was in large amounts of trouble before he went missing. He could either be dead or in prison right now.

Another amusing thing about the trip. The reef safety advisor who briefed us was a Kiwi. She was fairly pretty, but the most amusing thing was her accent caused some laughs as she said the phrase: "Only six can be on the back deck at any time". Basically, if you don't know Kiwi accents, they stuff up the vowels, so i = e, a = ie, e = i. So, what I heard her as saying was: Only sex can be on the big dick at any time." :p

Yeah i'm very satisfied with my decision. I would much rather pay for NFL Sunday Ticket or the college hoops package anyways since I'm more involved with those sports. (although since I live in North Carolina, I'm sure all of the UNC games will be televised anyways.)

Yes, that means they are a game ahead of the Yanks now. I may not get it this year though. My expectations for the Tennessee Titans are sub-par. I'm not sure it's worth buying it if they have another season like they did last year.

Schilling is pitching incredibly poorly this year, from what I can tell.

I'm not going to tee off on him or anything, because he basically sacrificed his career to win the World Series last year.

Saying the Titans will be "sub-par" is generous, frankly. They're going to have a top 5 pick in the Draft next year.

He had three starts after coming off the DL, sucked in all three, went on the DL again, came back as the closer, and has struggled, to say the least.

He's being used as the closer now, and from what I've seen on Baseball Tonight, that's not working out so good. I think he only pitched 3-4 games before the injury that moved him to bullpen but I could be wrong.

Another amusing thing about the trip; The reef safety advisor who briefed us was a Kiwi. She was fairly pretty, but the most amusing thing was her accent caused some laughs as she said the phrase: "Only six can be on the back deck at any time". Basically, if you don't know Kiwi accents, they stuff up the vowels, so i = e, a = ie, e = i. So, what I heard her as saying was: Only sex can be on the big dick at any time."

We pronounce stuff how they're meant to be pronounced, not like you bloody Aussies. You all have a habbit of saying your vowels 2 octaves higher than they're meant to be, and in a very nasal-y acccent. I thought it was quite a good idea, YSI, because there are about a million YSI threads about the place, and it's a good way to exchange music, really getting bands heard, i wouldn't mind, as long as they bought stuff afterwards, i mean, if you're getting heard it's all good right. But yeah, there are so many laws these days, everything seems to have something illegal in it one way or other.

How many people are actually gonna buy the music? I don't have the money, if i download an album, sometimes i'll only listen to it once or twice. England is also ridiculous for buying music at CD stores, HMV sell most CD's for like £15. I know downloading is wrong, and i would rather be able to buy albums for £5, but i really have no alternative.

Yeah, what Med's saying, i would much prefer having a cd of a band i like than having a few scattered mp3s of them. It's something you can hold you know, and say you own. And some of the artworks are brilliant and you would love to own a copy of it.

With the postcount thing, i think it's alright, and should be kept, people do put a lot on store for it, but sometimes it's just a laugh, but it is something you can look at and if you have contributed a lot, you can have a figure there to prove it, but it's like the join date, it's a name or number, and it's just a figure, only there to keep records....

meh, it just seems to be that people put too much store by it anyway. I mean, I have no idea who some people are around here due to name changes but if they're posting decently I couldn't really care less either. Doesn't really matter I guess. And I think CDs won't die for the forseeable future, not least because not everyone can easily download music, but there's no doubt that digitial music will keep on growing in popularity, as the record labels have finally realised. I prefer owning a CD personally.

What the hell, I live in Maryland!

Well, no one called me Antihero around the forums after Jelle started calling me "Little Jom" (to distinguish me and DBJ, who is "Big Jim," heh), so then the "Little" moniker was dropped, since I'm not all that "little." After that point, everyone just started calling me "Jom," so I figured that hopefully DBJ would give me a namechange in his thread in Site, and he thankfully obliged, so that's how that went about.

I can pick fast like Slayer style alternate picking the E string palm muted, but I cant solo fast. I have no desire to really learn how to either. Soloing isnt as fun as playing real songs.

I'm pretty fast at rythm, but when I sometimes, when I try to solo I loose count and then I'm just all off, which I guess is why I really stick to rythm. I wouldn't worry (if you are) being able to solo as fast as Kerry King or Hanneman, though Slayer is one of my favorite bands, most of their solos are just random chromatics.

Cain

Legato reigns supreme with my soloing style. Since I improvise everything I rarely get caught up in stupid picking phrasing and other things that kill melodic spirit. I'm pretty fast: I can play pretty much any Satriani song (except for the bridge riff of Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing, and Bells of Lal Part II) and a little Vai. But my right hand is not very accurate. I can do quick gallops by circle picking (using the thumb and index muscles to alternate pick, rather than wrist or arm), but I can't do fast picked lines or tremolo lines to save my life. My rhythm skills are pretty cool, but I'm afraid that if I learn the quick picking stuff I'll kill my legato soloing.

EDIT: Slayer solos are the musical equivalent of barfs.

I improvise everything as well, and I've become quite good at it. I don't like to write solos, but the advantage is it's not slopy at all, while I make mistakes when I improvise.

Well, I have theory internalized to the point where I always know where I'm going and what I'm doing, so I rarely mess up in the way. I tend to think of music graphically while I play as well: I'm proud to say that I've made excellent progress in learning to not play positionally. I rarely ever use a box pattern except when I bust out a "lick." But when I'm improvising, I'll include a lot of bending, sliding, position shifting and weird intervals to take me along. It's become rather second-nature.

But that's when I'm jamming. When I have one four-bar solo in a non-guitar-oriented song, I tend to compose one by trial and error: improvising a few solos and eventually settling on one that I will always play for that particular song.

My soloing style is marked by repetition, mainly.

I'll play a bar, alter it. Then I'll play another bar and alter it, then combine the two.

My style ATM is mainly lick-based.

I haven't delved deep enough into theory to know about all the stuff you talk about, Lucas. I've got a basic knowledge of key/time signatures, time changes, and dynamics, but nothing too in-depth.

I rarely ever use a box pattern except when I bust out a "lick."
I somewhat use box patterns. I call what I use "extended boxes", because I've taken the box patterns, figured out how they work, and figured out how to play the same pattern around the neck. I find it helped me out a lot, added a lot more variety to my leads, and just made them all around more interesting.

My style ATM is mainly lick-based.

I need to learn more thoery as well. I'm pretty much at the same level as you, and I could be a lot better if I knew more.

See, time changes and key signatures only really become relevant with learning how to read standard notation. The practical theory, such as scales, chords, scale-chord relationships etc...these are the most important skills to have to be a proficient soloist and composer. You don't need the stuff that gets discussed in a basic theory book that is not oriented towards the average tab-whoring guitarist. The Guitar Grimoire is the perfect book for that kind of study. It's helped immensely with my understanding of that practical theory. I have only recently begun to understand key signatures and time signatures with my study of standard notation, but you don't need any of that to be a good soloist or a proficient songwriter. It's practical if you play an instrument that requires sight-reading: basically, every other kind of instrument besides the fretted ones.

Haha. Music talk in a musician forum. What a hoot!

Seriously though, since I am very poor at all my chosen instruments (guitar, sax, piano, vocals), I'll just post pictures of my new hunting knife.

You use that for hunting?! It looks like it'd be better suited for ancient Celtic sacrificial ceremonies.

EDIT: fix'd
