I really don't care what Tom Cruise does or says to other people about "scientology". I think he makes at least decent movies that are entertaining. You can enjoy the art form without enjoying their personality.

Scientology's a religion. John Travolta's a scientologist, isn't he?
Anyway, I like Tom Cruise just fine. Right before WotW came out, when he was cruising (pun!) the light night talk circuit, he was all right, and actually seemed like a down-to-earth personable guy. Then I saw bits of his interviews with Matt Lauer and started thinking he's kind of an a-hole, but just before 10:30 at night. He's cool the rest of the time.

Woah, this is what urbandictionary says.. but because it's urbandictionary I'm not sure about all the truth:
A cult founded by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard. There core beliefs are as follows:
This area of the galaxy was once ruled by an alien warlord named Xenu. 65 million years ago his empire was overpopulated horribly, so to combat the overpopulation he had trillions of citizens called in for psychiatric evalutations and tax audits, where they were given paralytic drugs, loaded onto space planes, and flown to Planet Teegeeack. Once on this planet, their bodies were stacked in huge piles around volcanoes, while atom bombs were dropped into these volcanos, instantly killing trillions of galactic citizens.
To keep these people from reincarnating in the rest of the galaxy, Xenu set up a special trap. Powerful force-fields kept their souls (called "Thetans" in Scientology jargon) from escaping, and these thetans were then shown special holographic movies about the various lies they are supposed to believe, with characters like Jesus, Mohammed and Buddha. Over time, these thetans began to believe Xenu's lies about false gods, and began to reincarnate on Teegeeack (but the thetans called this world "Earth"). When intelligent life appeared on Teegeeack, thousands or millions of "Thetans" cling to every native soul (er, "thetan") and fill it's head with nonsensical thoughs and irrational beliefs.
The key idea of Scientology is to avoid tax officials and psychiatrists at all costs, while paying the church a large amount of money for special "counseling" (called "auditing" in their jargon) to help you reach a special enlightened state called "Clear" where you telepathically communicate with these "thetans" clinging to you and force them out of your body, and rid yourself of evil Xenu's influence.
(By the way, most Scientologists don't know this, like the Mystery Cults of the Greco-Roman world, Scientology doles it's doctrine out in tiny doses to it's new recruits, and tells the public next to nothing about what it believes. You don't hear that whole story until you reach a special rank in their group called "OT3" for "Operating Thetan 3". Their doctrine holds that if this got out, the Thetans in people would revolt at hearing the truth and people would get sick and die possibly just by hearing this story, which of course leads people who aren't Scientologists who hear this story to tell it to others and watch them not die or get ill from it.)

I know how to separate the person from the art. I like a couple of Jim Carrey's movies, even though he's a douchebag in real life. I like Last Action Hero, even though Schwarzenegger is a misogynist.
But I never really liked Cruise to begin with. Now I hear him spouting off on Scientology, denouncing anyone who disagrees with him, and just want him to shut his noise tube and make a decent movie.

You know, I recall reading about how in the mid-twentieth century, the cult of choice for celebrities was LeVey's Church of Satan. Whatever happened to that?

I've got class from 9-12 then 1-5 and lecture most nights from 8-10 but lecture is usually watching films. I'm really busy and need to go to class in a few minutes.
That was all mostly for Steerpike's benefit as I doubt most of you understand the Brakhage comment and that was the on;y one anyone else should care about.

Well, that's my max tolerance, size-wise. But bigger is generally better, especially if they don't sag, which is their wont if the girl is skinny rather than on the plump side.
I've been attracted to girls because of their boobs since third grade. No joke. They were totally mysterious and I had to figure out what they looked like. And even when I did I couldn't get enough of 'em.

Ramsey rather famously requested that his postcount be reset, as a statement about how much he cares about postcount. Actually, Meyer's movies are mostly entertaining not just because of the nudity, but because of the self-awareness of how trashy they are.
Russ himself admitted that he made crappy movies. But what made the difference was he made no illusions and let the movie be entertaining in its poor taste and campiness. That became an inspiration for John Waters.

(In case you missed my first post)
The other idea is essentially a much more eerie story, in which an American patrol gets lost in the gloomy, terrifyingly eeire Ardennes forest, stumbles across a German encampment and make battle, in which all but one American is killed. That American is wounded and taken prisoner by the only remaining German: a 16-year-old SS conscript that's scared to death of both his side and the Allies, who has nothing but Nazi dogma to rely on, and who doesn't speak a word of English. The story revolves around the time they spend together alone in the cabin, with the less experienced German holding the gun on the American, and how their communication barrier slowly begins to break down and the humanity in the both of them is revealed once again. I plan to have all the German's dialogue in German so it's enigmatic for English readers, just as it is for the main character. I just don't know how to begin and end it, or what they do with one another. :-/
Cain I don't know where this conversation happened but I read this quote and you have a great idea for a movie mate. Good luck with, just don't be tainted with the americanized view of WWII. I have a few ideas through that might work better.
Have the young american soldier keep the wounded GERMAN prisoner hostage. That way the audience who immenditely sees the German as the enemy will see this poor boys life turned to shi t in war. The american holding him hostage will see like I said before because the GERMAN are seen as bad the american will see that he is just like him. Its hard to explain but it would be more meaning full with the German hostage. Think about.
Don't nesscarly do the Ardeden forest. Be more creative think of a different instead of the old Band of Brother/Saving private ryan spots and a different world war II spot.
I just realise something cool, I know your american and all but the best would be a russian in Stalingrad. In an abadoned area of the city in winter. Even scarier. The reason I think of a russian is because the Russians had so much hate for the Germans and vice versa that way the chacters and their relations would be even deeper when they see past their countries propganda and romours etc.
Possible ending: Something happens and a abttle ensures the person who is keeping the hostage side wins and in the confusion he kills his hostage. But it haunts and Scars him for his entrie life. Eg BAttle happen in confusion Russian kills his German hostage but Compeletly shatters him and he can never forget.
BUT HEY ITS YOUR MOVIE just my two cents.

It's weird. I look at all the ideas you guys want to write about for books and movies, then look at mine, and I suddenly feel like I just walked into a beatnik poetry slam wearing khakis and a white Spongebob T-shirt.
Of course, it doesn't help that my relatives are kind of snobbish. You should have heard the conversation I had with my grandfather trying to convince him that Stare Into the Abyss was not going to be a trashy slasher flick.
Hahaha...yeah, seeing a hot chick you know naked is actually hotter than seeing a hot stranger naked.
It is, but I still feel incredibly embarrassed if I ever catch someone like that...
In other news: Read my story (http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showpost.php?p=8575704&postcount=19847)
I'd do Russian, except they were rabid in their hatred for the Germans. No Russian soldier fighting in Stalingrad would a.) be alone long enough to get to know a prisoner, b.) Be convinced of an SS soldier's humanity after a talk. The atrocity level on the Eastern Front was tremendous, and the Russians responded in kind and indiscriminately as punishment. There were decent Germans, but the Russians were so outraged at the conduct of the Einsatzgruppen that they weren't inclined to treat any prisoner with respect. In fact, they would have shot them when they surrendered, most likely.
The Ardennes Forest could be slightly cliche (it was the site for another eerie WWII tale, called "A Midnight Clear" the most depressing Christmas movie ever made), but I picked it because it was a "halfway house" for both Americans and Germans before the Germans invaded through there in Dec '44. They tended to leave each other alone. The setting is thus calm, but a suspenseful calm, perfect for the foreboding, wintery mood of my story.
In addition, I think the dynamic of a scared German holding the gun on a seasoned but wounded American has more dramatic potential, especially with the German ordering the American around and then the American doesn't know what he's saying, and has to infer both purpose and cause for his captor's behavior from body language and tone of voice, making an already tense situation that much more tense.
The key would be to not be heavy-handed with any portion of it. I have a tendency to have really obvious symbolism and canned "dramatic" occurences that are really cliché, so the story would be difficult to write.

They're just not on your wavelength. I suffer from a tendency in my teachers to reject historical fiction because drama gets stuffed up with too much history, so I'm not getting any help. The problem is that I can't find many people to take me seriously. D&D and Star Trek have been so extensively parodied and cliched that it's getting harder and harder to find someone who appreciates Robert Jordan or Orson Scott Card.
Again, I write things with a dark fantasy, but almost everyone I talk to keeps saying "That's not my thing." I feel like I was born several decades, or even several centuries too late. All anyone I ever turn to for criticism anymore wants to hear is pretentious, artistic drama that (if you cna understand it) emotionally rapes you.
You know your story sucks when the two main writers of the thread don't even care to acknowledge it. :(

I liked all your ideas a lot. 50% of my book collection is fantasy novels. Eddings, Fiest, Tolkien, Jordan, McCaffrey, Keaneally, Salvatore, James, etc.
You know your story sucks when the two main writers of the thread don't even care to acknowledge it. :(
I love you, but I actually haven't read it. Something about driving?
:( :( :( I'm sorry.
Steerpike: In that case, it would be best to attempt to combine the two. Paying homage to the masters of the genre is great, and wanting to write like them is natural, but in order for something to "become" people's thing is that you have to make appropriate concessions so that a majority fanbase will find familiarity along with the new. It's fickle and many people go too overboard in the name of sales, so this water needs to be treaded lightly, sure enough. But one of the primary criticisms I'm getting is that my love for historical conflict gets in the way of the basics of character development. I don't see how it could be relevent to know what my war-torn soldier's parents' names are, because my sweet tooth for historical accuracy and meticulously historical detail is overshadowing the human component of my story. Rather than thinking you were born too late, it's probably better to understand what is inaccessible about your work to the majority of people and work to combine the two to stay true to both your artistic motivation and the reader's expectation. It's finnicky and if rock n' roll teaches us anything, it's very difficult to not err too far on the side of accessibility. But it's something the stubborn artist needs to learn how to do if he/she doesn't want to starve.
You know your story sucks when the two main writers of the thread don't even care to acknowledge it. :(

MetalHead: I have acquired a fondness for the appearence of Angelic and Demonic sigils since doing a project on Dante's Inferno for a college course. I like the orderly way they look and I find the mythology surrounding them fascinating, especially with regard to demons. My avatar is the sigil of the demon Astaroth, one of the top Generals of Lucifer's legions of souls. He is a demon who believes he was relegated by God to his position in Hell unfairly, and he is in command and knowledge of all things to do with the liberal arts, which in my case is rather fitting. :) Sigils are originally emblems of rank within heaven, and they serve the same purpose in Hell, where the demons retained their sigils from the days when they were once angels. I speculate that it is an ever-present reminder of when the demons tasted perfection as angels and it causes them pain to look at and burns their skin like a brand. In magikal and Satanic rituals, the sigil is used to conjure the demon in order to fulfill a certain task for the person doing the conjuring: since demons supposedly retain knowledge of all the creative things they were endowed with as angels, it is in this way that they can be useful to people seeking their aid.
The coolest thing about demons is that nearly all come from other mythologies of deities, and were relegated to Hell as a way for the church to explain the presence of pagan religions in historical societies like Greece and Rome. All of Egypt's gods (Horus, Ra), Greece's Gods (Aphrodite, who I suspect became Lilith although I'm not sure, and others) Norse Gods and Demons (the Giants) and especially Sumerian and Ammonite (pre-Judaism Semetic Gods) gods are all now demons in Hell, described as "fallen angels" who sided with Lucifer in the war in Heaven.
EDIT: Astoroth's sigil is one of the few I've seen that actually look like the Sigil of Baphomet, Bartender's avatar. The Baphomet is not Lucifer's actual sigil but for some reason it is most commonly associated with alternative magic and Satanism in much the same way the six-pointed Star of David is also associated with Solomon.

The Baphomet was actually a holy symbol associated with the Knights Templar. When the corrupt King Philip the III (I think) conspired with the iniquitine Pope Clement something (again I think), they spread the rumour it was a foul symbol, to further discredit the order...
The symbol's association with the Peacock Angel is the work of stupid goth emo fags.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
From my friend's textbook
Baphomet:The Pentagram Connection
As we examined on another page, it was the nineteenth century Occultist, Eliphas Lévi who is falsely credited for first differentiated between the good and evil aspects of the five-pointed star or pentagram. Lévi envisioned two points down, as being magical in a good way, while one point down was indicative of the opposite magical reaction. Whether inverted or straight up, today's society views and perhaps wrongly so the pentagram as a symbol of evil. Let's look at some of the history of the pentagram to understand where along the way it changed from an inherently good thing to a perception of wrong.
The Pentagram: Origins And Historical Usage
The pentagram at left is the traditional pentagram with the five points of the star, one up two down enclosed inside a circle. This style of pentagram has existed for countless thousands of years, first dating back to around 3500 BC where it was used in Ancient Mesopotamia, at least latterly, by rulers as a symbol indicating that their power breadth the four corners of the known world.
The early Greeks called the pentagram the Pentalpha. Pent for the number five and Alpha being the first letter of the Greek alphabet. The Pythagoreans considered its geometric qualities to be symbolic, both mathematically and metaphysically, of absolute perfection.
To the Hebrews the five points of the pentagram were tied to the Pentateuch which is the first five books of the bible and represented as a whole the concept of truth. Although occasionally referred to as the Seal of Solomon, it is important to note that this is incorrect and that the Star of David or double triangle is the true Seal of Solomon.
The Pentagram As A Christian Symbol
Perhaps most curious is the pentagram as it relates to early Christianity. Up until medieval times, the five points of the pentagram represented the five wounds of Christ on the Cross. During these times the pentagram, so criticized by modern Fundamentalist Christians, carried no evil implications at all and in fact, in a lesser way than the cross, was symbolic of the Savior.
Constantine the Roman Emperor who converted to Christianity, and whose mother Helena discovered the religious relic known as the True Cross, chose to use the pentagram on his seal and amulet. In the ensuing church that grew from Constantine's takeover of the Roman Empire, the cross became the chosen symbol of Christianity rather than the pentagram. Perhaps ironic, that by a mere choice of iconography, the pentagram could have been hanging around the necks of millions of Christians worldwide.
The Pentagram As A Symbol Of Evil
Beginning with the destruction of the Knights Templar by the combined treachery of King Philip IV and Pope Clement V, the inquisition of the church moved into full swing starting with the Templars, who fell partly under accusations of worshipping an idol called Baphomet. It is highly unlikely that the Baphomet of the Templars, if it existed at all, resembled anything like Lévi's Baphomet, which we examined on another page.
Still the order was squashed by torture, death and Papal dissolution by 1314. Like the torture of the Albigensian Cathari, and the aforementioned Templar order, the church began to destroy all that opposed the rule of the Holy See. Alleged heretics, Pagans witches all met with the same fate of conversion or death.
It was at this time that the horned gods still worshipped by the peasants and folk peoples of Europe, such as Pan became the accepted imagery for the Devil by the Christian Church. Therefore in the eyes of the church if the peasants worshipped false, evil gods, then the Pentagram symbol, used by those people as a symbol of security, must therefore be evil as well.
The Nineteenth Century And The Birth Of The Baphomet Sigil
Eliphas Lévi, was the first to adapt the inverted pentagram shown right as symbolic of evil. In the Middle Ages the upright pentagram represented summer, while the inverted or points down pentagram was a representation of winter. It is rumored that Lévi formed two illustrations of the pentagram. The first, his good orientation, featured the five points of a man within the points of the Pentagram. This is called the microcosmic man and represents the four elements, earth, wind, fire and water represented as the man's limbs with his head representing the spirit.
Next to the Microcosmic Man, he is alleged to have drawn the inverted pentagram as the goat's head or Baphomet. In so doing, he formed for the first time, a differentiation between good and evil symbolized by the pentagram.
The Baphomet sigil or simply Baphomet has become the official symbol of The Church Of Satan, which was started by Anton Szandor La Vey [La Vey was a dumbarse - Ed.] in 1966. Satanists and pseudo-Satanists have used this sigil all over the world. The illustration below shows the two sketches attributed to Lévi. While this illustration has been connected to Lévi, our research shows the earliest use of this image was in "A Pictorial History of Magic and the Supernatural" by Maurice Bessy originally published in French in 1961 and making its first English translation in 1964, many years after the death of Lévi.
Conclusions And Observations
Napoleon Bonaparte once said, "What is history, but a fable agreed upon?" As I've shown the Pentagram has devolved from a one-time symbol of faith and knowledge to today being representative of all that is evil. We have also seen how the artwork of one man, Eliphas Lévi became associated with the evil aspect of the pentagram and an accepted image of the Christian Devil through his androgynous illustration of the Baphomet.
It is highly unlikely that the Templar Knights worshipped a demonic entity in the image of the goat, but due to the chain of events shown in these pages, it has come to be an accepted belief or to quote Napoleon, "a fable agreed upon" by many Fundamentalist Christians.

In 8th grade I attempted to read Dante's Inferno, but I couldn't really understand what I was reading, I only read maybe the first 20 pages something about a lion or something blocking this dude's pathway over a hill. I think I'm going to try and read it again soon. I haven't read in a while.
Rather like the pagan gods I mentioned being relegated to mere demons in Hell as a way to explain away the existance of those religions, and thus the idea that pagan religions are synonymous with Satanism, even though there's no relation.
Very interesting Jason, and I love the Napolean quote especially. He balances wisdom with humor and insolence.
"Give me enough medals and I'll win you any war."

Well, if you have ever read some of Eddings fantasy novels, he has a rather clever way of dealing with multiple religions. Basically, all the gods exist, and are aware of each other, and it is mankind's perversions that give rise to the need to have only one kind of God.
I mean, some people are really stupid. Christians and Muslims worship the same God, for crying out loud.

Farewell
Sorry for interrupting any conversation that's going on, but I want to fake-gloat about baseball.
Two-for-two with an RBI, only one of the game. Final score: 1-0.
It was a real barnburner, or whatever the catchphrase is. Heh.
I've been really trying to focus on taking the ball opposite way. First at bat, single to right-center. Third at bat, double to right center to score the runner.
I should probably clarify that I bat right-handed, heh.
And I caught the whole game. Pitcher threw a two-hitter, and rarely shook me off. It was great.
And it doesn't seem like much, but I needed a game like this, so hopefully the season will finish alright.
/end fake-arrogant gloating

Which is exactly what he does in every debate. How the hell does he become a mod? He did more of those retarded "I ban if you post" threads than any other mod on the site. He did it OVER and over again, because of his glee for doing so. He's totally immature and he's one of the most stubborn arguers in the Politics forum. There's no doubt he's a hardcore Christian; he lives in a fantasy world where he thinks a bunch of good ideas in paper actually apply to the real world.
I haven't been banned yet, but given Non Sequitur's nature, I wouldn't be surprised if I was banned for one of my posts in his thread (which are relatively tame, but this is Non Sequitur we're talking about). Bah.

Those pictures have been around forever, its just total coincidence really. People who want to find conspiracy theories in things will find them if they just look hard enough, does not mean there is any truth behind it.
I mean yes you can fold a 20 dollar bill to look like that, but as i said, its pure hocus pocus conspiracy theory.
i mean the Osama thing is a perfect example of that, yes if you take what has been on the back of the 20 dollar bill for quite a bit longer than osama has even been alive, you can get the letters 0 S A M A because it does say 20 The United States of America, and those are all very common letters.

For those who know how dollars looks like, please tell me whether this is true: http://spiroskagadis.com/oaggelostoutromou.html
(in the second dollar column, in the second picture it's supposed to say "Osama")
Yeas it's true but like X12ouncesofhateX said it is pure coincidence.

yeesh, watching a trilogy in a row is never a good idea, even when you love the movies. We did a marathon of the 2 extended editions of the first 2 lord of the rings the night return of the king came out in theaters, and by the time it came to see ROTK i was almost completely uninterested. It just wears you out, and usually isnt worth the effort.

You're saying everything I want to say, but I'm getting too worked up to actually say it. It really pisses me off how he doesn't realize that mainstream rap influences suburban white kids more than inner-city black kids.

He's backed into his reflexive spouting of the same arguments over and over again. When he starts doing that, it's a sign that we've mostly beaten him.
EDIT: He just suggested that we go into every inner-city housing project and arrest everyone with a nice car, because they're "certainly guilty of welfare fraud, theft, and a number of other things."
Mankind has reached a new low.

words cannot express how much I hate the white stripes, she can't even play the straight 4-4 time that the songs are supposed to be!
about two have a slight vriation from the first beat you are tought in drum lessons! and even that just throws in an extra bass drum note...

He's a borderline racist.
Not Klansman racist, just looking-out-for-the-white-people lazy-selfish-American racist.
Actually his stance is perfectly indicative of his Christian (likely Catholic) background. "If **** happens, you deserve it." He's not so much a racist as a horribly overmoralized Christian, who has not moved past the stage where he doesn't understand why people can't have everything he has.
"Well, if they don't have what I have they must have done something to deserve it."

He's been a mod for as long as I've been a member. I think him, Kithkin, and Ikikdababy are the only ones left from the day I joined.
So to answer your question, I don't know. We didn't used to have a politics forum though, so maybe nobody knew what he thought. Or maybe Jeremy is also a Christian conservative so he likes the cut of zerokewl's jib.
