Oh btw Cain, my cover of 'Blinded By Fear' may just give you a run for your money :P

Mine has all real instruments, i've done the drums all ready.

Sweet. :) I plan on listening once all the entries are in and finalized. Until then I scoff at any and all competition. :p

I'm betting it's good though. I do not have multi-talented instrumental skills, just a good ear. On the plus side, the drums I'm working with now sound much more real than SHIDI MIDI.

MetalFan: No, you're all confused. Washington is the state, Seattle is the city. And Washington is the shorthand for Washington DC. Everybody refers to the state with "state" added as a qualifier, as in: "I'm from Washington state."

Washington is a state on the west coast.

Can somebody give me a definition of power metal?

Bazarov

I got it. You know, I usually see it as plain Washington and not Washington DC and I was told that there is another city named Washington in Seattle

No man, Seattle is a city in the state Washington.

So there's a state called Washington on the West coast of America. Then on the East coast there's an area of ceded land called Washington DC.

One of the most gloriously pretentious, bombastic, retro, and overall least threatening of all modern "extreme" metal genres. Characteristics include a powerful vocalist with operatic tones and vibrato, very fast and extremely melodic guitars, choirs and orchestra backing them up, with fantasy themes often inspired by Tolkein and/or Broadway (Nightwish, for instance). A theatrical form of modern metal.

sounds interesting, cant wait to hear it. Same with Blinded by Fear (all instruments by 88 fingers of Joe), Transylvanian Hunger (br3ad man will make it symphonic) and A fine day to die (magicaltroll seems excited), technical anato song name of which I dont remember by 12ounces. The amon amarth cover is the best so far.

Fair's fair.

Anyway, the working title for this one is The Green Keeper. The plot line revolves around a modern-day wizard who is charged as the The Green Keeper of a local park, meaning he is supposed to the secret guardian and caretaker. What makes that particular park so special is the fact that a particularly strong leyline passes through it.

The conflict comes in that a group of developers and contractors want to build commercial property over a part of the park which the leyline passes directly through. Construction over the leyline won't damage it, but since magic is shaped by belief, the heavy traffic of humanity through the area could result in magical repercussions that could take a turn for the worst.

The reason I bring this particular story up is because I wanted a folk-y Celtic sort of soundtrack for it. Who better to ask than you, Lucas?

Sounds like a lot of fun. :) And it's a cool blend of the modern with the magical, which is something I've always liked to see explored better. I bet you're a big fan of "The Storyteller" by Jim Henson, right? Your penchant for whimsy and fable seems to indicate to me that you'd be the kind of person that would like that show.

Here are my story ideas, one that I am currently writing, and another which has a ton of potential but I have no idea how to organize it.

The first is an Alistair MacClean-style World War II caper. In AM novels, Allied commandos would always dress as Nazis and blow up big guns behind the lines or some such. They were always a lot of fun. In this story, I'm combining as many threads as possible from real history, to tell a fictional story about how the two people in charge of the U.S. atomic bomb project are captured by the Nazis in late 1944. The story begins with the British/Norwegian sabotage of the Norsk Hydro factory, responsible for constructing the heavy water the Germans were using to try and build an atomic weapon. A principal German, an SS/SD policeman named Keppler, is introduced here. His failure to protect the factory results in an unexpected promotion from Walter Schellenberg, the man in charge of the RSHA, the SS bodyguard for Hitler and the body in charge of the Gestapo. He wants to investigate the scientists and Keppler's superior, General Fischer, because he says he suspects disloyalty. But the real reason is because Schellenberg, an ambitious man, wants to control the bomb project himself.

Meanwhile, in Mexico, a police officer is murdered in a cafe. This occurs just after he has visited a Nazi spy in the jail where he is being kept, caught smuggling American money across the border. The Mexican secret policeman investigating the crime suspects the two are interrelated. Who were the funds for? He travels to Argentina on the lookout for the German spy ring responsible for the police officer's death, but what he doesn't realize is that the spy in question has already moved across the border to the United States, on a mission from the spy ring in Argentina, which itself comes from the SS in Norway. The message, hidden in the advertisements of a Mexican-edition German paper is: "Water supplies good. The delay of work merely causes delayed gratification. Find prize-winners for the upcoming race: make sure they know how to hit the same place twice." His mission is to obtain the whereabouts of the German and Danish refugee scientists (Nobel Prize winners all, champions of physics) that escaped the Gestapo, most notably Niels Bohr. The Germans want to know why they are in America.

Gradually, the intricacies of the various plottings take shape. The reason this story is so rich is because I get to explore so many covert facets of the war. The FBI picks up transmissions from the German spy who is searching for scientists and tries to track him down. The Abwehr, German military intelligence, tries to figure out what the SS are up to: they inexplicably purchase Navy ships and send commandos to Mexico. The anti-Nazi head of the Abwehr, Canaris, knows his days are numbered and wants to score one final coup against the SS, but he doesn't have enough information. Finally, the Germans succeed in catching Oppenheimer and Groves on a boat journey from Florida to Washington, and capturing them. What the United States is then forced to do is mount a covert operation to retrieve them--WITHOUT letting any of their Allies know. The bomb project is still a secret, and the U.S. is terrified of a loss of atomic monopoly and the reaction of their allies, especially Russia, to their project. A further concern is the known Communist sympathies of Oppenheimer in particular--what should happen if they are transported to Austria and the Russians capture them when they arrive? I'm able to explore modern-day political issues for America.

On the character level, I get to have a lot of fun with characters discussing the ethics of using the bomb and the soldiers who get sent on the caper to Peenemunde (the rocket plant where Werner von Braun built the V-2) to retrieve the scientists before the Nazis glean all the secrets from them. It's going to be a sprawling, fun tale.

The other idea is essentially a much more eerie story, in which an American patrol gets lost in the gloomy, terrifyingly eeire Ardennes forest, stumbles across a German encampment and make battle, in which all but one American is killed. That American is wounded and taken prisoner by the only remaining German: a 16-year-old SS conscript that's scared to death of both his side and the Allies, who has nothing but Nazi dogma to rely on, and who doesn't speak a word of English. The story revolves around the time they spend together alone in the cabin, with the less experienced German holding the gun on the American, and how their communication barrier slowly begins to break down and the humanity in the both of them is revealed once again. I plan to have all the German's dialogue in German so it's enigmatic for English readers, just as it is for the main character. I just don't know how to begin and end it, or what they do with one another. :-/

Actually, I've never seen The Storyteller.

Anyway, the first story sounds like a nostalgic caper that harkens to the days when pulp fiction began to give way to the Atomic Age.

The second sounds like a very artistic piece, and one that would have to be handled with a very light touch. I can understand how you'd be uncertain how to execute the beginning and ending.

If you ever get to writing the manuscripts, I'd love to see either one.

I have an idea for a movie, which would only be cool if it was done with the proper images/shooting/pictures. It's about a young man (probably in high school), who gradually goes insane because of his seemingly boring and pointless life that is filled with nothing but repetition, etc. The thing is that in response to this, his brain begins to take over his life, and he begins to hallucinate and things start to transform and change (normal objects start melting away, for example). His brain completely destorys other things, like people surrounding him. Throughout the movie there are symbols that continuelly become more abstract (for example, a clock at the beginning is normal-looking, where as at the end it towers over his bed and looks completely evil and horrifying). Eventually his mind destroys everything and consumes his life entirely.

It definitely has some plot holes, and trust me the images I have for it are a lot cooler than it sounds. I have a lot of ideas that I can't really type out, like the sounds and overall feeling I have for the scenes and the whole complete theme of isolation and insanity (yes I became aware of the similarities to Dark Side and The Wall after thinking of the concept).

I like to keep my projects on the downlow, mainly because they suck, but here goes.

The 2nd Book: The man character is a 36 year old man named Kenny Plath, whose wife was killed by a drunk driver. He lives with his fourteen year old daughter, Jessica. He works at a futuristic tehnology monopoly named Globeman Co. The company's pride and joy is a mysterious young man named Napoleon, who is the only person at the company capable of building high-quality robots. Another man applies for the company, who somehow knows how to do everything Napoleon could do but for lower pay. Napoleon is layed off in favor of this new worker. Kenny and an attractive 44 year old woman named Joyce soon find that murders have been taking place at Globeman. A friend of Napoleon's eventually confesses that Napoleon created a machine to seek revenge on the employers of the company, then the friend plummets to his death out a window. Several employees sucesfully attempt to bring the robot down. Possible sex scene between Kenny and JOyce.

Intriguing ideas guys.

A couple others I had bouncing around my head:

Wolfheart: Suffice to say that it's a movie about werewolves. I haven't hammered out the plot yet.

Genetech: Based on a game setting from Wizards of the Coast, this story takes place in the near future. Genetic engineering has progressed by leaps and bounds in the shadows, but it all come to the forefront when several of the "experiments" escaped. Human/animal hybrids known as Moreaus, created and trained for military and para-military operations. A handful decided they wanted something more and escaped. The pockets of renegade Moreaus now run the gamut from refugees to ecoterrorists. The story focuses particularly on a group of freedom fighter Moreaus: Felix, Moony, Archimedes, Lee, Onyx, and Oberon.

The Concrete Knights: (working title only) Similar to The Green Keeper in the dichotomy between magic and the modern world, the story revolves around a group of humans capable of seeing the presence of magic and monsters in our world, a phenomenon that most people's minds trick them into ignoring. These modern-day knights keep the peace between humans and magic, and often have to bash heads with the creatures of the night.

I would definitely read/watch that, good luck with it.

Not even that any terriost cell that does something the news will report Terriosim with a LINK to Al-Quaeda. When it could have been some terriost cell which has nothing to do with Al. Its a better story for the news through if they can some how claim that Al is linked.

I just don't know how to begin and end it, or what they do with one another. :-/

Cain I don't know where this conversation happened but I read this quote and you have a great idea for a movie mate. Good luck with, just don't be tainted with the americanized view of WWII. I have a few ideas through that might work better.

Have the young american soldier keep the wounded GERMAN prisoner hostage. That way the audience who immenditely sees the German as the enemy will see this poor boys life turned to shi t in war. The american holding him hostage will see like I said before because the GERMAN are seen as bad the american will see that he is just like him. Its hard to explain but it would be more meaning full with the German hostage. Think about.

Don't nesscarly do the Ardeden forest. Be more creative think of a different instead of the old Band of Brother/Saving private ryan spots and a different world war II spot.

I just realise something cool, I know your american and all but the best would be a russian in Stalingrad. In an abadoned area of the city in winter. Even scarier. The reason I think of a russian is because the Russians had so much hate for the Germans and vice versa that way the chacters and their relations would be even deeper when they see past their countries propganda and romours etc.

Possible ending: Something happens and a abttle ensures the person who is keeping the hostage side wins and in the confusion he kills his hostage. But it haunts and Scars him for his entrie life. Eg BAttle happen in confusion Russian kills his German hostage but Compeletly shatters him and he can never forget.

BUT HEY ITS YOUR MOVIE just my two cents.

Yeah, but could you expect him to just ignore it? He'll be back there by tonight, most likely, having done his thing in and around London. My main point was that I wouldn't worry about any kind of further attack up in Scotland; the security around the G8 summit would be understandably incredibly high, and now ever moreso with these explosions. Even if they (whoever "they" is) had wanted to try something at the summit, they would have tried it before their initial attacks, wouldn't they? Otherwise all they've done is increase everybody's watchfulness around a target they wanted to hit, which is just a bit stupid.

However there are many other targets which, now that I think about it, would be ridiculously easy to hit.

Not poor, just could have been better
If they wanted to do more damage then they could have easily, I think.
The fact that they didn't shows restraint on their behalf. Possibly.

I don't think it was even bad planning, though. In a nutshell - they want(ed) to disrupt the transport systems in London, not kill people. Think about it; sneaking enough explosives onto a train to wreck a carriage can't be much less difficult than sneaking on enough explosives to just obliterate the train and kill the vast majority of those aboard.

Also, the attack on the bus was rather strange, hitting all the main underground stations, then a bus???

That could just be a bomb malfunctioning as it was taken to it's actual target, as (I think) happened with the last exploding bus we had.

I don't think they'll try and hit the G8 summit. That would just be foolish.
However there are many other targets which, now that I think about it, would be ridiculously easy to hit.

Yeah. My old German teacher (one of them) used to talk with us about how easy it would be to carry out an effective terrorist attack.

I more or less just turned atheist without a reason. At first I was more so Agnostic, but the pope dying was a bag shove, and everyime I hear presidents and such talking about religion and government should be tied together, or everytime I hear someone talk about Jesus, that makes me hate religion a little more. I'm not full-fledged Atheist, I was Catholic for like ten years prior to this, so of course there are still some Christian ideas ingrained, but I don't feel at all guilty saying **** God or **** the Bible.

Sup. So I've made 2 movies so far and watched many many others. Just saw Dead Man with Johnny Depp.. Holy crap it is amazing. Lots of avant-garde films (especially Brakhage who either really annoys me or I love). Basically, it's a good time. I don't get to use editing software until next wek though so everything's been in camera. I got to act in a make-out scene too which was fun. I've got class from 9-12 then 1-5 and lecture most nights from 8-10 but lecture is usually watching films. I'm really busy and need to go to class in a few minutes.

That was all mostly for Steerpike's benefit as I doubt most of you understand the Brakhage comment and that was the on;y one anyone else should care about.

My roommate listens to metal as does my floor counselor and next door neighbor. Sweet. They're mostly into metalcore but they like death metal too which is cool and I talk underground rap with some kid on the first floor. Remind me to check out more Immortal Technique. Alright, that's all for now. Go vote Sean Malone. Bye.

Blair's spoken a few times, he flew back from the G8 summit to give press conferences and get more information from his staff, the G8 is suspended at the moment. i'm too sure about attitudes yet, i live 350 or so miles from london. i'm just glad my uncle doesn't work there anymore. mostly people seem to be shocked that it's happened, the government / security services have been kind of expecting an attack ever since 9/11, but it was still really unexpected. 37 confirmed dead so far, over 700 injured.

The emergency services were well prepared and aquitted themselves fantastically I think, what struck me as odd was the minimal fatalities on the bus, only two deaths, one supposedly the suicide bomber (if it was0 himself, the doctors were luckily on the scene instantly due to the blast happening right outside the medical council headquaters. I was also very impressed by Blair's second statement and the speech made by Ken livingstone- very moving I thought.

Man today was one of the worst days ever my throat is so messed up I was terrified over my unle in england and I got a load of hassle of my boss and some customers and I thought I was gonna get stabbed an hour before by a guy I use to know.

I just saw War of the Worlds.

My hands are shaking and I have a nervous tension in my stomach. My sinuses are still hot with backed-up tears of induced panic. I am exhibiting the symptoms of minor shell-shock. Not in any form of recent history has a movie affected me this way. Every Holocaust movie repulses me but doesn't invoke the kind of disbelief at the action on the screen as this one did. This movie rivals 28 Days Later in portraying mankind without its assurance of survival, and thus behaving at its worst. The first hour of it was one of the most harrowing experiences I have ever had watching a movie, and I came close to becoming totally, physically upset at at least five points. The scene where the mob attacks their car is unbelievably distressing. I couldn't believe the brutality of what was going on.

What the **** is Roger Ebert thinking giving this only two and a half stars?

I'll catch it on DVD. I'm not exactly a fan of Tom Cruise. Never was. And frankly, I'm still being petty and irritable about the fact that War of the World shoved Howl's Moving Castle out of theaters after only two weeks of screening.

Breasts are my favorite thing on the planet. If I had DDs I'd sit in my room and play with them ALL DAY.

/late to the superficial quality discussion

Cain? It's not just CGI fest is it?

No, no, no. No WAY. Spielberg uses the fuzzing techniques used on Saving Private Ryan so that the film isn't glossy at all. It looks unbelievably real and frightening.

And to clarify: I loved it. It's probably the best movie about a hostile alien invasion since the original War of the Worlds. But it wasn't much fun to watch because of how distressing it is. I will still probably see it again, however.

Alex, don't be silly. Tom Cruise is a prick but he does a great job in this movie. It is NOT a movie to wait for DVD. It needs to be understood and processed in the very loud, amplified movie theater environment. Your enjoyment will only be less if you watch this on TV.

EDIT: A disclaimer though. Anyone that would find a hysterical little girl (as in screaming fits and crying fits) amusing rather than upsetting in the context of complete destruction of her home and the people around her would not appreciate this movie's effects the way I have.

The old War of the Worlds is incredible but this is totally different. Independence Day ripped most of the original conventions of the WOTW as much as possible, so this one reminded me of a crossbreed between Alien, 28 Days Later, and the original Dawn of the Dead.

Cain

Explain this a little more please.

Alien had the total and utter terror of being exposed to a dangerous alien presence with no warning, no hope of defense, and quick, sudden death. It was a very dark film about Alien hostility that derived more fear from how the humans reacted to it rather than the Alien itself. 28 Days Later was a human nature study of what mankind would be like after a post-apolcalypse. In addition, it showed a fantastic portrayal of ordinarilly populated zones being totally abandoned with all the evidence of mass hysteria and destruction lying on the ground with the paper, the ash, and the ominous dead bodies. The original Dawn of the Dead showed a similar post-apocalyptic atmosphere with true terror, and combined this with fantastic human leads, whom we care about and who do not succumb to the hysteria around them. There are also marauders and surviving humans who react to mankind's plight with the most banal behavior. And it does another great job of showing locations with the evidence of mass hysteria all around.

In essence, this is the best portrayal of mankind's panicked-mob mentality one could hope to show, in addition to a great portrayal of the end of the world scenario. It's very upsetting and very eerie, as Tom Cruise and his family travel the countryside, with alien forces everywhere they go and panicked civilians running away to no place. And like the zombie movies, there is never an explanation for the alien presence, never any information on how to defeat them--nobody knows anything except that they're dying and that they don't want to, and will do anything to stop themselves from dying.

Just because he's a prick in person doesn't make him a bad actor. One could argue that Russel Crowe is the biggest ******* ever, but does that make his movies bad? No.

Scientology is indeed ridiculous, but the quality of his performance in this movie and many others cannot be questioned.
