Man, those are some seriously nice albums...how much did you get them for? I got the Blackalicious album courtesy of Zappa raving about it, and it's amazing. One of my favourite hip-hop albums out there, and the fact that DJ Shadow's involved just makes it even cooler.
Victorialand, Fear of a Black Planet and 36 Chambers were £4.99 each. Blazing Arrow was a bit more expensive (£8.99), but it was actually the first I picked up (more or less without hesitation, sadly enough), because of Zappa's love for it.
How is DJ Shadow involved with Blazing Arrow? I'm aware of a whole bunch of guest/involved artists, but not him.

I finally got around to listening to some Alter Bridge. Good stuff, but I have one minor complaint.
Specifically, I think Mark Tremonti got a little over-zealous. He's got a new band (kind of), he's got much more creative control, he's now more involved in the songwriting process. That's all great and everything, but some of his guitar solos needlessly turned to shred and turned masturbatory until he slowed down again.
I think in the thrill of getting to open up his talent and skill, he lost perspective a little.

I was watching them play some live songs in Japan. They played Needled 24/7, Silent Night Bodom Night, Lil Bloodred Riding Hood, and Hatecrew Deathroll. It was a pretty good performance, but the crowd was kind of boring.

It means that in my mind you don't love someone without hating them a little bit too. Like perfect love isn't what you see in movies where everything matches perfectly and nothing ever goes wrong. Real love has little veins of hate mixed in and sometimes people who love each other do malicious things to each other, but it's real love if that happens and doesn't deter it.
Basically perfection is based on imperfection existing.

Not exactly, though it's a high probability. I just think you can't know for certain without passing that sort of "test" if you will. It's possible you might never hurt one another and still be in love, you just wouldn't be able to know for sure I don't think. I think in most cases though it will happen at one point or another, and it will strengthen your bond or break it, in which case it was never real love anyways.

On a more serious note about deportation and such- Does it piss anyone else off when the immigration agency goes on a Wal Mart raid looking for illegal immigrants instead of going to a trailer park and deporting the aliens that are sitting on their asses doing nothing rather than the ones that are actaully making a living for themselves? I've come to notice that too. The ironic part is that the original Americans are generally the worst. I'm not trying to hate on Native's or anything, but from what I've expirienced, they just like to sit on their reservation land and smoke peyote all day. I know I'm generalizing a bit, but this is just what I've come to notice. Then you have white people that think they are entitled to everything.
One of my 'immigrant' friends who really stands out in my eyes is a girl who graduated this past year. She is going to Stanford next year on a full ride scholarship. One of my 'immigrant' friends who really stands out in my eyes is a girl who graduated this past year. She is going to Stanford next year on a full ride scholarship. She is so freaking smart, yet she also had a hand in about 1 out of every 2 school clubs. She also played tennis, which is a full-time after school commitment. She was one of the most dedicated people I've known. Granted, she didn't have much of a social life or a tennis game, but she was still an extremely nice person, and a perfect example of what you're talkign about Vince. I'll miss her a lot when she's at Standford..
My dad immigrated here when he was six, supported his divorced mom and his five siblings (being the oldest), and attended college and became a rocket scientist. I'm slightly biased heh :)

If you live in the south...
Otherwise hooray for AA!
Yeah, but before I moved back here, it was tough being a white guy. I lived in Southern California like 100 miles from the border. Lots of Mexicans. I'm not saying anything bad about them because a lot of my friends were Mexican-American, and they were cool people. Don't matter what the upbringing is to me, as long as they're cool to me, I'm cool to them, and that's how it usually is with people in general with me, anyway... I almost thought I was Mexican for a while . I've been used to being (often) the only white guy in my classes. When I got back here, I was like "Oh, hey, look at all the white people, let's meddle and talk about how much that one minority takes all our jobs and such". Stereotypes suck and own at the same time.
Wow.
Sup guys. I was wondering if you guys could give this song a listen: it's a newly recorded version of my song "Empty" renamed to "A Silent Sky" and with the "real" programmable drums, synth, and bass on Garageband rather than stupid MIDI. Unfortunately, in the mixdown to iTunes it sounds like some mids were lost. So, I would appreciate criticism not only on the song composition wise, but also in terms of levels and mix. Are they all right or way off?
Please listen! :)

Oh yeah, we talked about that huh Ray. I can actaully think of an immigration story involving Chicago. Has anyone ever read Black Boy by Richrard Wright? It's kind of an autobiography about this black boy(go figure) who was born down south and was subject to oodles of prejudice, but he eventually made it to Chicago in his late teens and ended up living a succsesful life. I reccomend it to anyone looking for a sad story, though. As far as required literature for my past english class, it was top notch.

Dude, you never cease to amaze. I wish I could play guitar like that. The whole song had a rather quixotic atmosphere to it. The synth layers really helped to create the proper ambience, and the guitar tone was great.
The song had a distinctive power metal flavor to it, and I really liked sharp-edged riffs in particular. Well-done.
While I'm thinking of it, have you gotten a chance to read "Pickman's Model" yet?

Really? Because that's how theory clicked with me. I'd learn a scale, or a rule about how to make a chord from a scale, or a way to do something, and it would lead me to explore. "What does this note sound like over this note?" "What does this chord become when superimposed on this unrelated bass note?"
Theory to me isn't rules, it's opportunities for neat-sounding things in my compositions. The second chord in my calm verse is a perfect example. I knew that the Em-C change was good and dark, but then I though about Em9 and what a fantastic chord that was. Then I was like, what if I played that chord except with a C note? And I got that awesome Cmaj9#11 thing in the verse. I think looking at every rule like an exporation thing is the only way I've managed to stay in touch with my composing brain as opposed to my soloing brain growing like a tumor.

The Guitar Grimoire series of books is the answer to all your theory woes. As for practical application, guitar magazines that tend to focus on soloing and musically complex compositions (I'm thinking of UK's Guitar Techniques here) can help you figure out what the situations are.

The Guitar Grimoire series of books is the answer to all your theory woes. As for practical application, guitar magazines that tend to focus on soloing and musically complex compositions (I'm thinking of UK's Guitar Techniques here) can help you figure out what the situations are.
I'll stick those on my Amazon.com wishlist. Magazines aren't really practical now because in order to buy them or subscribe to them, I would regularly have to spend money.
Speaking of which I was wishing I had a camera for your little contest, Steerpike. I was playing Gary Moore's "The Loner," and for the big extended solo at the end the wah was on, my eyes were shut tight, and my mouth was wide open and pointing towards the ceiling. Leah would have had a fit I think.
Surely you can find someone with equipment. I mean, you live in New York state, right? You can't swing a dead cat there without hitting someone who can get you video equipment.
Personally, I'm beginning to think my own entry will just be a vocal number provided I get the equipment in time. My guitar playing is just... ugh... so bad. I actually have a nice little theatrical thing going when I sing Astronomy by Blue Oyster Cult or The Price You Pay by Savatage.

No, no, I'm only there when I'm at school. When I'm home it's in North Canton, Connecticut. :p
